The root is the part used and it is sedating: do not combine valerian with alcohol, sleeping pills, or other sedatives, and do not drive after a dose. Stop it two weeks before surgery, and taper after long use. Avoid in pregnancy, breastfeeding, young children, and liver disease - rare liver injury is on record. Overview

A tall, hardy perennial grown for its root, the classic sleep herb of European tradition. Easy in moist rich soil in zones 4-9, but it self-sows hard and is a listed weed in parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest, and the dried root smells memorably like old socks.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a big, hardy, unfussy perennial grown for one thing: its root. Every fall of the second year you dig up a dense, pale, fibrous root mass, dry it, and have a year's supply of the best-known sleep herb in European tradition. Above ground it is handsome in a cottagey way - four to five feet of ferny, deeply divided foliage topped in midsummer by wide domed heads of tiny white-to-pale-pink flowers that smell sweetly of vanilla and are covered in hoverflies.

Two things surprise everyone. The first is the smell: the fresh root is mild and earthy, but as it dries it develops isovaleric acid and comes to smell powerfully of old gym socks. That is normal, not spoilage, and it is why drying happens in the shed and not the kitchen. The second is that cats respond to valerian root much as they do to catnip, rolling on it and digging for it, so a newly planted or freshly disturbed patch can attract determined visitors.

Two name confusions are worth clearing up before you plant. Red valerian (Centranthus ruber, Jupiter's beard) is a different plant altogether - a rosy-red-flowered ornamental with no medicinal use and its own invasive record in California. And corn salad or mache (Valerianella locusta) is a small winter salad green, a relative but not a substitute. If you want the sleep herb, look for Valeriana officinalis on the label.

One further confusion is genuinely dangerous, and it belongs to foraging rather than gardening. Valerian escapes into exactly the damp ditches, streamsides, and wet meadows where water hemlock (Cicuta) grows, both carry frothy white flower heads on tall stems, and hemlock's root - the very part you would be digging - is the most poisonous tissue of the most poisonous plant in North America, lethal in a couple of centimetres. Dig roots from plants you put in the ground yourself. A naturalized stand by the water is not the place to learn this plant.

      Press the flat, papery seed onto moist soil or seed mix and leave it uncovered, or barely dust it over - the seed is light-dependent, and burying it deep is the usual reason a sowing fails. Sow thickly: the seed is short-lived and germination from year-old packets is often poor, so buy fresh seed and use the whole packet.

    • Dig the roots after the foliage yellows
      Wait until the top growth has yellowed and died back in fall of the second year - the plant is pulling its chemistry down into the root, and that is when the crop is best. Loosen a wide circle with a fork and lift the whole crown; the root mass is fibrous and shallow but wider than you expect.
    • Wash outdoors, and expect the smell
      Hose the soil out of the tangled roots outside, on a table, using a jet of water and your fingers. The fresh root smells earthy and mild; it develops its famous old-socks odor as it dries. Split thick sections lengthwise so they dry evenly.
    • Replant the daughter crowns
      Around the old crown you will find several rooted offsets. Break these off and replant them at spacing straight away, and the bed regenerates itself - you never have to buy or sow valerian again.

Watch out for

Slugs & Snails Medium PestApr, May, Jun

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

Chiefly a seedling problem, and a predictable one - the damp, rich, mulched soil valerian wants is ideal slug habitat, and the soft young leaves of a first-year rosette are easily stripped. Established four-foot clumps shrug them off entirely. Concentrate protection on new sowings and freshly set-out transplants in spring, and keep the mulch pulled back from young crowns.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

The main disease limit on the crop. Valerian wants constant moisture but not standing water, and second-year stands in heavy or poorly drained ground lose roots to soil fungi - Montana State's production trials found a Phoma root rot cutting yields badly in year two while first-season roots came out clean. On ground that has rotted a crop, harvest on a one-year cycle instead and plant into a raised, well-structured bed.

Watch for: Numerous small brown-to-tan spots, sometimes with darker margins, spreading on the foliage after wet spells.

Prevent: Space for airflow, water at the base, use disease-free seed, and rotate away from Apiaceae beds.

Treat: Remove and trash affected leaves promptly; improve airflow; copper can protect new growth if pressure is high.

One of several leaf spots recorded on commercial valerian, alongside ramularia and downy mildew, and the one most likely to cost you root size by stripping foliage in a wet summer. Worse in hot humid regions and in second-year stands. Water at the base, space plants for airflow, and clear the fallen foliage in autumn rather than leaving it over the crown.

Valerian root contains actinidine, a compound that triggers the same euphoric response in domestic cats that catnip's nepetalactone does - and it reaches some cats that catnip does not, so a cat indifferent to catnip may still be a menace here. Behavioral studies put the response rate at roughly half of cats. The reaction is to the root rather than the leaves, so trouble comes whenever roots are exposed or disturbed: at planting, after division, around a freshly dug crown, and wherever a rooted offset has been left lying. Cats roll on the spot, dig at the crown, chew and drag away root pieces, and will return to a patch they have found. It is a nuisance rather than a disease, and it matters most in the first season, when a small plant cannot afford to have its roots hauled out of the ground.

Watch for: Soil freshly scratched out around the crown, with the plant lolling sideways or lifted clear of the ground. Fur caught on stems or on the mulch. Root pieces dragged several feet away and left chewed. A newly planted division that has been pulled up overnight and abandoned on the path. Rolling, flattened patches in the mulch beside the plant. Damage that arrives in bursts - nothing for weeks, then a wrecked planting the night after you divide or dig. Established clumps left alone while a new planting a few feet away is destroyed, because the interest is in disturbed roots and their scent.

Prevent: Cover new plantings. A square of wire mesh or hardware cloth pegged flat over the crown, left until the plant has rooted in and filled out, is cheap and is the only thing that reliably works. Firm the soil well after planting or dividing so there is no loose earth to dig, and water it in to settle the scent down. Never leave lifted roots, trimmings, or spare offsets lying on the soil - bag them or bin them straight away, because they are what draws a cat in. Do the dividing and washing somewhere the cat cannot reach, and expect the heaviest pressure in the day or two after any digging. Established clumps generally look after themselves.

Treat: Re-cover and re-firm the planting the moment you find damage, because a cat that has found the roots will come back. A plant pulled up but still holding roots usually recovers if you replant it promptly, firm it in, water it, and cage it; trim off any badly chewed root and cut the top growth back by a third to reduce the load while it re-roots. Root pieces that have been dragged off and gnawed are lost. Scent deterrents work for a while and then stop, so treat them as a supplement to physical cover rather than a substitute for it.

Peculiar to valerian and its relatives, and the single most common reason a new valerian planting simply disappears. Plan for it at planting rather than afterwards: mesh over the crown, soil firmed, and no spare root left lying about after you divide. Rats are drawn to valerian root for the same reason, which is the old basis of the Pied Piper story and of using the root to bait traps.

Aphids Low PestApr, May, Jun

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Colonies build on the soft new stem tips and flower buds during the fast spring flush, then largely vanish once the plant hardens up. Valerian is vigorous enough that this rarely matters, and its own flower heads pull in the hoverflies and parasitic wasps that clear it - so a jet of water is usually the most you need.

Powdery Mildew Low DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Turns up on the lower, shaded foliage of a crowded clump late in the season, and is mostly cosmetic on a plant grown for its root - the leaves are on their way out anyway. Space clumps generously and thin congested stems for airflow rather than spraying a plant you never eat above ground.

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

Only a problem on a valerian that has been allowed to go dry in hot weather, which is a bad idea anyway. Stippled, dull, bronzing foliage in a July drought is the tell. Fix the watering and mulch the root zone and the mites usually resolve themselves; a plant kept properly moist rarely sees them.

Valerian is not a Mediterranean herb and does not want the lean, dry, sharply drained bed those herbs like. It wants fertile, moisture-retentive soil - the sort of ground that suits comfrey or a damp meadow edge - in full sun to part shade. Full sun gives sturdier stems, part shade suits it in hotter regions, and either way it flops without support once it is up at four or five feet. Space plants 12-18 inches in a border, or 30-36 inches if you are growing them purely as a root crop and want the biggest crown you can get.

The seed is the fiddly part. It is flat and papery, it is light-dependent, so surface-sow it and cover it barely if at all, it dries out at the first careless afternoon, and it goes stale fast - fresh seed under a year old makes a night-and-day difference. Two to four weeks of cold, moist stratification in the fridge before sowing tightens the ragged 1-4 week germination window; a fall sowing outdoors achieves the same for nothing. Many gardeners skip all of this and start with a nursery plant or a division from a friend, which is entirely sensible: one plant is enough, since every crown you dig hands you several rooted daughters.

Year one is quiet - a flat rosette of ferny leaves and no flower stalk. That is exactly right. Everything happening that season is underground, so keep the plant watered, weeded, and mulched and let it build the crown you will harvest a year later.

Care

Water, feed, and stake it; then deadhead religiously and cut back rhizome runners once a year, because containment is the real care job on this plant.

The growing side of valerian is easy. Keep it evenly moist, especially through spring growth and the first summer, since drought costs you root size and gives a short floppy plant. Top-dress the crown with compost or a balanced feed as growth restarts in spring, mulch two or three inches over the root zone, and stake it before it flowers - four to five feet of hollow stem in rich soil or part shade will lean into its neighbors after the first storm.

The real care job is containment. Valerian spreads two ways: windborne plumed seed, and rhizomes that push shoots up a foot or two out from the clump. So deadhead as soon as the bloom fades, before the heads go fluffy, and bag those heads rather than composting them. Once a year, in spring, run a spade around the clump and cut off any runners that have wandered. This is not fussiness - the plant is a listed invasive in parts of the Northeast and upper Midwest, banned from planting in Connecticut and a noxious weed in Wisconsin, precisely because gardeners let it seed. In a small garden, growing it in a large container or a sunk bottomless pot makes the whole problem go away.

Harvest

Dig the roots in fall of the second year once the foliage has yellowed, wash them outdoors, split the thick pieces, and dry them warm - around 100 degrees F - away from anywhere you want to be.

The crop is the root and rhizome, and the moment is fall of the second year, after the top growth has yellowed and died back. That timing matters: the plant is drawing its chemistry down into the root, and root quality falls away after the second or third season as the crown turns woody. A spring dig before growth restarts is the acceptable alternative. Loosen a wide circle with a fork - the root mass is shallow but broader than the crown suggests - and lift the whole plant.

Wash outdoors. The roots come up as a dense tangle full of soil, and a jet of water, your fingers, and a table you do not mind ruining is the honest method. Cut away the old woody center, break off the rooted daughter crowns to replant, and split thick sections lengthwise so they dry through instead of souring in the middle. Dry warm and with airflow - a dehydrator or drying room at around 100°F is ideal - until the pieces snap rather than bend.

Now the warning nobody believes until it happens. Fresh valerian root smells earthy and faintly sweet. Drying root smells like old socks - the fresh compounds break down into isovaleric acid, and the odor is penetrating, clinging, and unmistakable. Dry it in a shed, a garage, or a spare room with a window, never in the kitchen or anywhere with soft furnishings, and expect the smell to linger for days. It is completely normal, it is not a sign the roots have spoiled, and it has been the herb's signature for two thousand years.

Storage

Dry the root fully, break it into pieces rather than powdering it, and store airtight in the dark; a well-dried root holds its strength for about a year and starts fading after that.

Dry the pieces until they snap cleanly - anything that still bends holds moisture and will mold, and a moldy jar of valerian is not something you want to open. Store it in airtight glass, in the dark, somewhere cool. Double-bag or double-seal it if the jar lives anywhere near food, because the odor travels.

Keep the root in rough pieces rather than powder. Powdered root has far more surface exposed to air and loses its volatile compounds noticeably faster; grind only what you are about to use. Expect good strength for about a year, fading gradually after that rather than going bad - which suits the crop nicely, since the bed gives you a fresh harvest every fall. If you make a tincture instead, work with the fresh root, which many herbalists prefer, and store the finished tincture in dark glass away from heat.

Propagation & seed saving

Divide the crown every fall when you dig roots - each plant hands you several rooted daughters - and you will never buy valerian again. Seed works but is short-lived, light-dependent, and should be deadheaded away in any case.

Valerian is the easiest imaginable plant to propagate, because the harvest and the propagation are the same job. When you lift a crown in fall, the old woody center is surrounded by several rooted daughter offsets. Break them apart by hand, discard the tired middle, and replant the best of them at spacing. Do this every autumn and the patch renews itself indefinitely from a single original plant - one purchase, then never again. Spring division, just as growth restarts, works equally well.

Seed is the other route, with a caveat. Valerian sets a great deal of viable, wind-carried seed, and you should be cutting those heads off before they ripen, so deliberate seed saving works against the containment this plant needs. If you do want seed, bag a single head as it turns and collect from that, keep it dry and cool, and sow it within the year - viability drops off sharply after twelve months. Remember to surface-sow it, since the seed is light-dependent and will not come up from any depth. And when volunteers appear elsewhere in the garden, as they will, either pot them up or pull them; never leave them to head up somewhere you are not watching.

Nutrition

Valerian is not a food. The root contributes no meaningful nutrition - it is taken in teaspoon doses as a tea or tincture, and its interest is in its aromatic constituents rather than any nutrient content.

There is no nutritional case to make for valerian, and it would be dishonest to invent one. The root is not eaten as a vegetable, the leaves are not a salad green, and the doses involved - a teaspoon of dried root in a cup of tea, or a dropper of tincture - are far too small to contribute calories, vitamins, or minerals in any amount that matters.

What the root does carry is an unusual mix of aromatic chemistry: valerenic acid and its relatives, a complex volatile oil including bornyl acetate, the unstable valepotriates, small amounts of free GABA and its precursors, and the isovaleric acid that develops during drying and produces the smell. These vary enormously between seed lots, growing sites, and harvest years - which is one reason clinical results with valerian have been so inconsistent. Treat it as an herb with interesting chemistry, not as a food.

In the kitchen

Not a culinary plant. The root is drunk as a bedtime tea - earthy, musty, and an acquired taste - and appears in some European bitters and liqueurs; historically it flavored stews and scented linen. The leaves are not eaten.

Valerian has essentially no place in cooking, and it is worth being blunt about that rather than dressing it up. The one everyday preparation is a bedtime tea: about a teaspoon of dried root steeped in a covered cup of just-off-the-boil water for 10-15 minutes. The taste is earthy, woody, and frankly musty, and most people improve it considerably by blending it with chamomile, lemon balm, mint, or licorice root. A cold infusion, left in cool water for several hours, comes out noticeably less harsh. Some prefer a tincture simply to avoid the flavor.

Historically it did wander into the kitchen. Medieval and early-modern European cooks used the root as a spice in stews and broths - it appears in Swedish and English records under the name setwall - and it was tucked into linen chests and clothing to perfume them, a taste that says a good deal about the standards of the era. It still turns up as a background note in a handful of European bitters and herbal liqueurs, and as a flavoring in some tobacco blends. The leaves and stems are not eaten, and the flowers, though sweetly scented in the garden, are for the vase and the hoverflies rather than the plate.

The tradition. Valerian root has been the standard Western herb for sleeplessness, nervousness, and agitation for a very long time. Greek and Roman physicians used it - Dioscorides and Galen both wrote about it under the name phu, an onomatopoeic comment on the smell. It ran through medieval and early-modern European medicine as an all-purpose nerve herb (one of its English names is simply 'all-heal'), was widely dispensed for 'nervous exhaustion' in the nineteenth century, and was given to soldiers and civilians for shell shock and air-raid nerves during both world wars. Today it is among the most-sold herbal supplements in Europe and North America, taken chiefly for insomnia and for mild anxiety and restlessness.

What the evidence actually shows - and does not. Valerian has been studied more than most herbs, and the results are genuinely, frustratingly mixed. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses pooling randomized placebo-controlled trials have reported modest improvements in subjective sleep quality and in the time taken to fall asleep, with a fairly consistent safety picture. But a recent umbrella review pooling that whole literature concluded there was no reliable evidence of efficacy for insomnia, and objective sleep measures - polysomnography, actigraphy - have generally failed to show what people report subjectively. The trials are small, short, and use wildly different preparations; reviewers repeatedly point at variable extract quality as a likely reason the findings will not line up, and note that the whole root and rhizome may behave differently from standardized extracts. The honest summary is that valerian is plausible, popular, and unproven: it may help some people sleep a little better, and the evidence has not settled the question either way.

Cautions that matter. Valerian is generally well tolerated, with headache, dizziness, stomach upset, and next-morning grogginess the common complaints, and a paradoxical stimulating effect in a minority of people. Because it may be sedating, do not combine it with alcohol, benzodiazepines, sleeping medication, or other sedatives, and do not take it before driving or operating machinery. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported, usually in multi-herb products, so avoid it if you have liver disease and stop it if you develop jaundice or unexplained abdominal pain. Its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is unknown, so avoid it, and it is not for young children. Case reports describe withdrawal-like symptoms after stopping long-term high-dose use, so taper rather than stopping abruptly. Because it may deepen and prolong anesthesia, stop valerian at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. Talk to a clinician before using it alongside any medication, and treat persistent insomnia as something to have looked at rather than self-treated. Valerian's written record starts with Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Galen, who prescribed the root for insomnia, headache, and digestive trouble and called it phu - a name generally read as a straightforward reaction to the smell. The Latin valere, 'to be strong' or 'to be well', gives us the modern name and the plant's reputation. Through the medieval period it was one of the great cure-alls of the monastery garden, known in English as all-heal and setwall, used for everything from epilepsy to plague, and grown as much for perfuming linen as for medicine.

It kept working. Nineteenth-century pharmacopoeias listed it for 'nervous exhaustion' and hysteria; during the First and Second World Wars it was given to soldiers with shell shock and to civilians under bombardment as a nerve tonic, and wartime shortages drove real cultivation in England and North America. There is also a nice piece of folklore worth knowing: rats are strongly attracted to valerian root, and the herb has long been used to bait traps - which is the usual explanation offered for the Pied Piper of Hamelin, who in some tellings carried valerian rather than merely a pipe. The same chemistry explains why your cat takes such a violent interest in a freshly dug crown.

Troubleshooting

Seed that never comes up was almost certainly buried, stale, or allowed to dry; no flowers in year one is normal; flopping means rich soil or shade; volunteers everywhere means you deadheaded too late; and the smell is supposed to be like that.

Seed never germinated: the three usual causes are burying it too deep (the seed is light-dependent - surface-sow it, or barely dust it over), letting the surface dry out even once, or using stale seed - viability drops off sharply after a year. Buy fresh, sow on the surface, cover the tray not the seed, and give it up to four weeks. Cold-stratifying two to four weeks first makes emergence far more even.

No flower stalk in the first year: completely normal. Valerian makes a rosette in year one and blooms in year two. Nothing is wrong.

Stems flopping over: too much shade, very rich soil, or simply four to five feet of hollow stem meeting a storm. Stake before flowering, move it into more sun, and stop feeding heavily once the stems are up.

Seedlings coming up all over the garden - and the neighbor's: you deadheaded too late. The seed is plumed and windborne. Cut the heads off as soon as the bloom fades, bag rather than compost them, and pull volunteers while small.

New shoots a foot outside the clump: rhizome spread. Run a spade around the plant each spring and cut the runners off, or grow it in a container or a sunk bottomless pot.

Small, thin, disappointing roots: the plant went dry in its first summer, was crowded, or was dug too early. Water year-one plants generously, space root crops 30-36 inches, and wait for the foliage to yellow in fall of year two.

Roots soft, dark, or hollow when lifted: root rot from waterlogged ground, which is a real problem in second-year commercial stands. Valerian wants moisture, not standing water - improve drainage and consider a one-year harvest cycle on that ground.

The dried root smells appalling: that is valerian. Isovaleric acid develops during drying and it smells like old socks. Dry it away from the house, store it double-sealed, and be reassured that it is a sign of a normal crop rather than a spoiled one.

The patch has been dug up overnight: cats, or occasionally rats. Both are drawn to the root. Lay wire mesh over a new planting until it is established.

Growing across climates

Happiest in cool, moist summers - zones 4-7 are its heartland, zone 8 works with part shade and steady water, and zone 9 is marginal. Cold is not the limit; heat, drought, and its own weediness in cool wet regions are.

Valerian is a plant of cool, damp northern Europe, and its garden behavior follows that exactly. Zones 4-6 are its heartland: fully hardy, vigorous, and completely at home - which is also why it escapes so readily into wet meadows and streamsides across the northern United States and southern Canada, and why Connecticut and Wisconsin list it. If you garden here, the containment routine is not optional. Some sources rate it hardy to zone 3 with reliable snow cover.

Zones 7-8: still straightforward, but give it afternoon shade and steady moisture as summers get hotter. Heat and drought together are what shorten valerian's life; a plant in dry full sun in a zone 8 summer will be small, floppy, and disappointing at digging time. Mulch matters more here than anywhere.

Zone 9 and warmer: genuinely marginal, and honest about it. Valerian tolerates the winters easily but not the summers - it wants a cool season to build root, and in a hot humid summer it sulks, gets leaf spot, and roots poorly. If you want to try it, plant in fall into part shade with reliable moisture, treat it as a one- to two-year crop rather than a permanent clump, and harvest at the end of the second season rather than waiting. The upside of a hot climate is that the invasiveness that troubles the North is not a concern here.

Everywhere, the microclimate rule holds: a damp, part-shaded, rich spot at the back of a border beats the zone map. Valerian will grow in a wet ditch edge that nothing else wants, and it will struggle in a hot dry bed however good the zone looks on paper.
