Kiwi
The fuzzy brown skin is edible but is usually peeled, or the flesh is scooped out with a spoon. Kiwi is a recognised food allergen and can cause severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, especially in young children; it also cross-reacts with latex, banana and avocado (latex-fruit syndrome) and with birch pollen. Mouth tingling can be an early sign - anyone with a reaction beyond mild tingling, or any latex allergy, should avoid kiwi and seek medical advice.
Overview
The brown fuzzy supermarket kiwi, grown at home: a hugely vigorous, decades-living vine for zones 7-9 that needs a strong trellis, hard annual pruning, patience - and both a male and a female plant, because only females fruit and only with a male nearby.
Fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) is the familiar brown, fuzzy, egg-sized fruit of the supermarket, and it is a spectacular backyard vine for gardeners with room, warmth, and patience: a fast, powerful, decades-living plant that drapes a pergola or trellis and, once mature, buries you in vitamin-C-rich fruit that stores for months. It is a warm-climate crop — it needs the long, mild season of zones 7 to 9 to ripen its big fruit, and its dormant wood is damaged around 10°F. If you garden colder than that, the plant you want is its cold-hardy cousin, hardy kiwi, which has its own entry.
Three facts define this vine. It is enormously vigorous — many feet of new cane a year, on wood that gets heavy — so it demands a genuinely strong trellis or pergola built before planting. It is slow to fruit, typically three to five years to first bear. And most importantly it is dioecious: male and female flowers are on separate plants, only the females fruit, and only if a compatible male blooms nearby to pollinate them. One male serves up to about eight females, and it must be a fuzzy male — a hardy-kiwi male will not do the job. Get the trellis, the pollination pair, and the patience right, and a kiwi vine is a long-term showpiece crop.

Phytophthora Root & Crown Rot High
A soil-borne water mold (Phytophthora species) that rots feeder roots and, on many plants, the crown at the soil line whenever the ground stays saturated. Rotted roots cannot take up water, so the plant looks drought-stressed even in wet soil: the canopy thins, leaves go small and pale, growth stalls, and dieback works in from the tips over months or years. It is the commonest cause of death in plants that want moisture but cannot tolerate standing water, and it travels in surface water and on tools, boots and moved soil.
Watch for: Wilting, yellowing and stunting that does not improve with watering, a thinning canopy of small pale leaves, and dieback from the shoot tips. Dig and the feeder roots are dark, soft or brittle rather than white and firm, and on many plants the tissue at the base of the stem is discolored under the bark. Worst in low spots, and wherever a downspout, driveway or compacted path drains into the bed.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Plant on a mound, berm or raised bed in heavy soil, and never in a hollow that holds winter water. Redirect roof and hard-surface runoff away from the planting, water deeply but infrequently so the surface dries between waterings, do not pile mulch against stems, and do not overwater in cold weather when the plant is using little. Use resistant rootstocks or tolerant varieties where they exist for the crop, and never move soil from an infected area.
Treat: Very hard to reverse once established. Improve the drainage immediately, cut watering back, and mulch with coarse material rather than fine, which stays sodden. Remove severely affected plants and correct the site before replanting - and do not put another susceptible plant back into the same wet spot. Phosphonate (phosphite) treatments can suppress it in a valuable specimen, but drainage and siting do far more.
Kiwis are thirsty but wholly intolerant of waterlogging, so soggy ground is their main disease vulnerability. Plant on a raised mound or berm and give the vine moist BUT well-drained conditions - drainage here is the entire defense.
Deer (browse resistance) Medium
Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.
Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.
Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.
Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.
Deer can seriously set back or even kill establishing vines by repeatedly stripping the new shoots. A tall trellis that lifts most of the growth out of reach solves it as the vine matures; the vulnerable stage is the first couple of years.
Scale & Sooty Mold Medium
Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.
Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.
Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.
Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.
One of the more common kiwi pests, encrusting the canes and trunk. The annual hard pruning removes most buildup and a dormant oil in winter smothers what is left; rarely devastating on a healthy vine.
Spider Mites Low
Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.
Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.
Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.
Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.
They build up on kiwi's large leaves in hot, dry, dusty conditions and stress the vine, but rarely threaten it. Restoring vine vigor and moisture usually resolves it.

It bears no fruit; its job is to bloom alongside your females, and one male serves up to eight of them. Tomuri's later bloom is the closer match for Hayward specifically, so where you have the choice, pair Tomuri with Hayward - but a Chico male beside a female beats a female on her own by an infinite margin.

Female; late-ripening; not cold-hardy.

Still a female needing a fuzzy male pollinizer and a fairly long, mild season, and still worth wrapping the trunk of at the cold edge - but the most sensible pick for the cool end of fuzzy-kiwi country.

The headline rule for kiwi is pollination: you must plant both a male and a female, blooming together, because the vine is dioecious and only females fruit — a female alone flowers and sets nothing, and a lone male never fruits at all. One male pollinates up to about eight females, and it has to be the right species: a hardy-kiwi male cannot pollinate a fuzzy female, and golden kiwi (A. chinensis) blooms earlier and needs a chinensis male of its own. The classic home pairing is the female Hayward with the male Tomuri, whose late bloom overlaps hers. Decide all of this before you buy a single vine.
Next, build a strong trellis or pergola at planting — a mature kiwi is a heavy, vigorous monster that will destroy anything flimsy — and give the vine full sun, deep well-drained soil, and generous water (it is thirsty but hates soggy roots). Choose a site with good cold-air drainage, because kiwi leafs out early and its new growth is frost-tender; a late spring frost is a common cause of a lost season, and along with winter cold on the trunk it is what limits fuzzy kiwi to milder zones.
Match the plant to your climate honestly. Fuzzy kiwi wants zones 7 to 9: enough winter chill to break bud evenly, a long enough season to ripen a big fruit, and winters that stay above roughly 10°F. Colder than zone 7, grow hardy kiwi instead — it is a different species with its own entry, hardy to about -25°F, and it will crop where this one will not. Then be patient: you are planting for a first crop in three to five years and decades of fruit after that.

At the cold edge of its range, wrap the trunk each winter: dormant fuzzy kiwi wood is damaged around 10°F, and a vine can rebuild from a live trunk but not from a dead one. Keep a compatible male in good health and bloom, and welcome bees — hand-pollinate in cool, bee-poor weather if set is weak.
The good news: kiwi has few serious pests or diseases — mainly scale insects on the canes, phytophthora root and crown rot in wet soil, spider mites in hot dry spells, and browsing by deer (and cats, oddly drawn to some Actinidia like catnip). Given a strong structure and disciplined pruning, growing kiwi is far more about management than about spraying.
Harvest
Picked firm but mature in fall - seeds jet black, before a hard frost - and then ripened off the vine over days to weeks. It will not sweeten while it hangs, so waiting on the vine gains you nothing and risks the crop.
Fuzzy kiwi is harvested the way the commercial crop is, and the rule surprises people: you pick it hard. The fruit is taken firm but mature in fall — when the seeds inside a test fruit have turned jet black and the sugars have risen — and crucially before a hard frost, because it will not fully ripen on the vine and a hard freeze ruins it. There is no softening to wait for and no colour change to read; cutting one open is the only reliable test. A light frost after leaf drop does no harm, but once the seeds are black there is nothing to gain by leaving the crop hanging for birds, wind and weather.
The fruit then ripens off the vine over days to a few weeks at room temperature, faster next to an apple or banana, which give off ripening ethylene. It is ready to eat when it yields to gentle pressure in the palm, like a ripe pear. This off-vine behaviour is a genuine feature rather than an inconvenience: firm mature fruit stores for months in the fridge and is ripened a few at a time as you want them, so a single October picking becomes fresh fruit into late winter.
Practicalities: the whole crop comes off in one or two passes, so line up boxes and fridge space first. Lift and twist each fruit so it parts at the stem, and handle it gently — a punctured or bruised kiwi will not store, so sort those out and eat them first. A mature vine can carry a very heavy crop, 50 pounds and up, so plan for the flood before you are standing under it.
Storage
A champion keeper. Picked firm and mature, kiwi holds one to several months refrigerated and ripens on demand at room temperature - the fruit that keeps a home orchard in fresh eating deep into winter.
Fuzzy kiwi is one of the best-keeping vine fruits there is, and the whole trick is picking it hard. Firm mature fruit holds for one to several months in the refrigerator — longest at just above freezing and in high humidity, so a crisper drawer or a loosely closed bag is right — and you simply bring a few out to soften at room temperature whenever you want to eat them. Sort the crop first: sound, unpunctured fruit stores, and anything bruised, split or with a torn stem end rots and should be eaten straight away.
The one thing to manage is ethylene. Kiwi is very sensitive to it, so store the firm fruit away from apples, pears and bananas or the whole box will soften at once. Then use the same gas deliberately when you want fruit: shut a handful in a paper bag with an apple or banana and it will be ready in a few days rather than a couple of weeks. That is what turns a single autumn harvest into a supply you meter out over the winter.
For the surplus, kiwi freezes well sliced or pureed, and makes good juice, dried slices and leather, jam, and sauce, where its high acidity holds colour and flavour. Two notes for cooks, both from the enzyme actinidin: fresh kiwi will not set in gelatin unless it is briefly cooked first, and it tenderizes meat, which is useful on purpose and a nuisance by accident.
Growing across climates
A warm-climate vine: zones 7-9, needing a long mild season, a real winter chill, and winters that stay above roughly 10F. Late spring frost on early growth and winter cold on the trunk are the two limits. Colder than zone 7, grow hardy kiwi instead.
Zones 8-9 (the core range): fuzzy kiwi's happiest ground — the warm Southeast, the mild West Coast, California, and the Pacific Northwest valleys. The season is long enough to mature a big fruit, winters are mild enough for the trunk, and chill is usually sufficient. Zone 7: workable with care. Dormant wood is damaged around 10°F, so choose a frost-sheltered site with good cold-air drainage, wrap the trunk every winter, and expect to be picking late in October. Zone 6b: the cold limit, and a genuine gamble — only the hardier selections such as Saanichton 12, against a warm wall, with the trunk wrapped, and even then winter injury and seasons that run out before the fruit matures are both likely. Zone 10 and the low desert: the other end of the problem, where insufficient winter chill gives straggling, uneven bud break and light crops, and where summer heat scorches the big leaves.
Two limits do most of the damage. The first is late spring frost. Kiwi leafs out early and its tender new shoots are killed by a spring freeze, which is often the real reason a vine that looks hardy enough on paper still fails to crop. Site it on a slope or a rise for cold-air drainage rather than in a hollow, use a warm wall in marginal areas, and be ready to cover early growth. The second is winter cold on the trunk: a hard freeze can kill the stem outright even where the roots survive, which is why trunk wrapping is standard practice at the cold edge, and why a mid-winter thaw followed by a sharp freeze does more harm than a steadily cold winter.
If your winters go below about 10°F, this is the wrong kiwi. Hardy kiwi (Actinidia arguta, and the hardier A. kolomikta) is a different species with its own entry: dormant wood good to roughly -25°F, a much shorter season, and grape-sized smooth fruit eaten whole. It crops reliably in zones 4 to 8, where this vine cannot.
Troubleshooting
No fruit is almost always a pollination problem - no male, a wrong-species male, or bloom times that miss each other - or simply youth. After that: frost-killed spring growth, winter cold on the trunk, and undersized trellises.
Vine grows beautifully but never fruits: the classic kiwi failure, and usually a pollination problem. You may have planted only females (no male to pollinate them), only a male (males never fruit), a male of the wrong species — a hardy-kiwi male cannot pollinate a fuzzy female, and a fuzzy male cannot pollinate an early-blooming golden chinensis female — or a male and female whose bloom times simply do not overlap. Walk out during bloom and confirm a compatible male is open on the same days as your females. The other innocent cause is youth: three to five years to begin bearing is normal, not a fault. Spring growth blackens and dies back: late-frost damage to the frost-tender new shoots — site for cold-air drainage and protect early growth; this is the top reason marginal-zone vines do not crop. Whole vine dead to the ground after winter, or bark split at the base: winter cold on the trunk, which is damaged around 10°F — wrap it every winter at the cold edge, and if the roots survive, retrain a new trunk from the strongest shoot. Trellis sagging or breaking: the vine outgrew an undersized structure — build heavy from the start. Poor fruit set despite a male: too few bees in cool bloom weather — hand-pollinate. Vine collapses, roots dark and rotted: phytophthora root and crown rot in wet soil — improve drainage; kiwi needs moist but well-drained ground. Bumpy crusts on canes: scale insects — prune out and use a dormant oil. Leaves finely stippled and bronzed in a hot dry spell: spider mites — hose the undersides and keep the vine watered. Vines chewed, rubbed or dug: deer, or cats drawn to Actinidia like catnip — protect young vines. Fruit never sweetens on the vine: normal and expected — pick it firm once the seeds are black and ripen it indoors.
Nutrition
An exceptional vitamin C source - one kiwi supplies most of a day's need - plus vitamin K, potassium, folate, fibre, and the enzyme actinidin. Also a recognised allergen, so any reaction beyond mild tingling is worth taking seriously.
Kiwi is a nutritional heavyweight, led by vitamin C: a single fruit supplies most or all of an adult's daily requirement, which makes kiwi one of the best fruit sources of the vitamin, comfortably ahead of an equal weight of orange. It also delivers vitamin K, potassium, folate, vitamin E, and a good amount of fibre, along with antioxidant polyphenols, for very few calories.
A practical note on the skin: most of a kiwi's fibre and a good share of its antioxidants sit in and just under the fuzzy skin, which is edible even though almost nobody eats it. Scrubbing or rubbing the fuzz off and eating the fruit whole, the way you would a peach, is a real if unglamorous nutritional upgrade over peeling it. (The smooth-skinned kiwiberry from the hardy kiwi vine makes that easier still.)
Kiwi contains the enzyme actinidin, which aids protein digestion — kiwi is studied as a gentle digestive aid, thanks to that enzyme and its fibre — but which is also the reason kiwi is a recognised allergen. It can cause severe reactions including anaphylaxis, it is one of the more frequent triggers of severe food-allergic reactions in young children, and it cross-reacts with latex, banana and avocado (latex-fruit syndrome) and with birch pollen. Mouth tingling can be the early sign, and anyone who reacts beyond that, or who has a latex allergy, should avoid kiwi and seek medical advice.
In the kitchen
Eaten fresh above all - peeled and sliced, or simply halved and scooped with a spoon; then pavlova and tarts, fruit salads, smoothies, and salsas. Fresh kiwi will not set in gelatin, and it tenderizes meat.
Kiwi is at its best fresh, and the easiest way to eat one is the laziest: cut it in half across the middle and scoop each half out with a teaspoon. Peeled and sliced into rounds, its bright green flesh with the pale core and the ring of tiny black seeds is a classic on pavlova and fruit tarts, in fruit salads, and on a cheese board. It blends into smoothies and juice, and dries into good chewy slices. Ripeness is everything here — an underripe kiwi is sour and squeaky, and the same fruit two days later is perfumed and sweet, so start a few off in a bag with an apple rather than eating them hard.
Kiwi's tang also works in savoury cooking. It makes a bright salsa for fish, pork or tacos, cuts through rich food in a slaw, and works as a natural meat tenderizer: the actinidin enzyme in a rubbed-on marinade breaks down tough cuts noticeably, which is worth knowing both as a technique and as a warning, since twenty minutes is plenty and an hour turns steak to mush.
Two more cook's notes from that same enzyme. Fresh kiwi will not set in gelatin desserts, because actinidin digests the gelatin — cook the fruit briefly first, or use a gelatin-free set. And it slowly breaks down dairy, so fold fresh kiwi into cream or yogurt dishes close to serving rather than hours ahead. For surplus, kiwi makes good jam, sauce, dried slices and leather, and juice, and freezes well; keep the ripest for eating out of hand and send the rest to the blender.
Propagation & seed saving
Named kiwi varieties - and, crucially, the male or female sex - are propagated by cuttings, grafting and layering, not seed. Seedlings are random-sex gambles that take years to reveal whether they will ever fruit.
Kiwi is propagated vegetatively for a reason that matters more here than for most fruit: because the vine is dioecious, you must know the sex of a plant, and only cloning a known male or female guarantees it. Named varieties are multiplied by softwood or hardwood cuttings (semi-hardwood cuttings under mist in summer root reasonably well) and by grafting scion wood onto seedling rootstock, both of which reproduce the exact variety and its sex. Layering a low, flexible cane also works. This is how you get a matched, compatible male-and-female pair you can rely on. Grafted plants have one extra rule: keep the graft union above the soil and above your winter mulch, or the scion roots and you lose whatever the rootstock was doing for you.
Growing from seed is a poor idea for the home grower, even though the seed scraped from a supermarket kiwi germinates readily and makes a charming houseplant. Kiwi seedlings are a genetic and sexual lottery: roughly half turn out male and never fruit, fruit quality on the females is unpredictable, and worst of all you will not know a seedling's sex until it finally flowers years later — so a decade of trellis space and pruning can go to a plant that was never going to bear. Buy or propagate named, sexed vines instead, keep the right ratio of one male per up to eight females of the same species, and you have a dependable, decades-long planting rather than a long guessing game.

History
Native to China and long known as the 'Chinese gooseberry', taken to New Zealand in 1904 and bred there into the large fuzzy fruit we know - then renamed 'kiwifruit' for export in the 1950s-60s, and the brand stuck worldwide.
The kiwi is a surprisingly recent commercial fruit with a Chinese origin. Actinidia deliciosa grew wild across the Yangtze valley and beyond, where the fuzzy fruit was gathered but barely cultivated, and Westerners long knew it as the Chinese gooseberry. The modern crop began in 1904, when a New Zealand schoolteacher, Isabel Fraser, carried seeds home from a visit to China. New Zealand growers raised them, selected the best, and over the following decades bred the large, well-flavoured fruit we recognise — above all the female cultivar Hayward, released in the 1920s and still the dominant kiwi in world trade a century later.
The famous name change came purely for marketing. Exporting a fruit called a Chinese gooseberry into 1950s America meant both a Cold-War-era problem with the word Chinese and a tariff problem with the word gooseberry, so New Zealand exporters renamed it kiwifruit in the late 1950s and early 1960s, after their national bird. The brand stuck worldwide, and for decades many people assumed the fruit was a New Zealand native. It is not: it is a Chinese vine that a New Zealand industry turned into a global crop, and China is once again the largest producer.
The story kept branching. Gold-fleshed A. chinensis cultivars arrived commercially in the 1990s and are now a major crop in their own right, and the cold-hardy hardy kiwi — A. arguta and A. kolomikta, grown in the West as ornamental vines since the 1870s — has become a backyard fruit for gardens too cold for this one. All of it descends from vines that were, a little over a century ago, simply wild fruit on a Chinese hillside.
