Introduced - native to temperate Europe, western Asia and North Africa; carried to North America in the early 1800s as a medicinal and flavoring herb and now naturalized across much of the northern US and Canada.
Plant with care. Two real problems, not lore: absinthin from its leaves and roots suppresses nearby plants, so keep it out of vegetable beds, and it self-seeds hard. It is a state-listed noxious weed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado and Washington - do not plant it there. Check your state first.

Thujone is the load-bearing fact: a neurotoxin, convulsant at high doses. Wormwood is fine as a flavoring and as a brief, weak, supervised bitter - never a daily tea, never for weeks on end, and never the essential oil internally. Avoid entirely in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and with epilepsy or any seizure disorder. Handling raises a rash in people sensitive to the daisy family, and the wind-blown pollen is a late-summer allergen.

Overview

Silver filigree foliage, tough as old boots, and the bitterest thing in the garden - the herb behind absinthe and vermouth, and an ancient worm remedy. Grow it deliberately: it leaches absinthin that genuinely suppresses its neighbours, it self-seeds hard, and it is a listed noxious weed in several states.

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is one of the great bitter herbs — a hardy perennial with finely cut, silvery-grey, softly felted foliage that holds its color all season and asks for almost nothing. It grows into a loose, woody-based mound 2 to 4 feet tall on poor dry ground in full sun, shrugs off drought, is ignored by deer, and looks superb against dark green or deep purple planting. It is also the source of two famous drinks: absinthe, and vermouth, whose name is simply the German Wermut — wormwood.

Two things separate it from an ordinary silver-leaved perennial, and both are reasons to plant it deliberately rather than casually. The first is allelopathy: absinthin washes off the leaves in rain and leaches from the roots, and it measurably suppresses germination and growth in plants around it. This is documented research, not garden lore — volatile emissions from wormwood have stopped wheat germinating and stunted fennel in trials. Site it away from your vegetable beds. The second is that it self-seeds prolifically and has escaped across the northern US, where it is a state-listed noxious weed in North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado and Washington, with further county listings in Montana. Cutting the flower sprays off before they ripen is not tidying; it is the job.

Do not confuse it with its relatives. Mugwort (A. vulgaris) is a taller rhizome-spreading weed with leaves that are green above and white beneath. Sweet wormwood (A. annua) is a green feathery annual and the source of the antimalarial artemisinin — a different plant with different chemistry. Wormwood itself is silver-grey and softly hairy on both leaf surfaces, and unmistakably bitter on the tongue.

    • Site it away from the vegetable beds before you plant it
      This is the decision you cannot take back cheaply. Absinthin washes off the leaves in rain and leaches from the roots, and it genuinely suppresses germination and growth nearby. Give it a dry corner, a gravel bed, a path edge, or a large pot - at least 3-4 feet of clear ground from anything you intend to eat, and further from a seedbed.

    • Cut the whole plant back hard as growth resumes
      In early spring cut back to 6-8 inches, into the low woody framework but leaving visible buds. This is the single job that keeps wormwood dense, silver and upright instead of a bare-legged sprawl. Skip it two years running and the plant splits open in the middle.

      For a real quantity of dried herb, shear the plant by about half as it comes into bud rather than picking sprigs. It regrows, and shearing at this point also removes most of the flower buds, which is the easiest way to stop it seeding.

      The flowers are tiny nodding yellow buttons in loose sprays and nobody grows this plant for them. A single mature plant can shed tens of thousands of seeds that stay viable for three to four years, so cutting the sprays off while they are still yellow is the whole containment strategy. Bin them; do not compost.

      Once bloom is done, cut back by about a third to a half. It tidies the plant, forces a flush of fresh silver growth for autumn, and removes any seed heads you missed.
    • Watch for the pollen if you have hay fever
      Wormwood is wind-pollinated and its pollen is a genuine late-summer allergen, related to the mugwort pollen that European allergists test for. Cut it before it blooms if anyone in the household reacts, and wear a mask if you are clearing it in flower.

    • Leave the top growth standing until spring
      Do not cut wormwood to the ground in autumn. The old stems shelter the crown and keep the woody base from sitting in wet, and the hard cutback belongs to early spring when you can see which buds are alive.

      Cold does not kill wormwood; wet does. Make sure winter runoff, a downspout, or a heavy mulch is not holding water against the base. A gritty mulch is fine, a wet leafy one is not.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

Wet kills wormwood far more often than cold does. Winter waterlogging on heavy ground and humid wet summers in the Southeast are the two danger windows. Plant raised and gritty, never amend the soil for it, keep leafy mulch off the crown, and leave the top growth standing over winter rather than cutting to the ground in autumn. If a plant fails, replant somewhere sharper-drained rather than in the same spot.

Aggressive Self-Seeding & Spread High DisorderAug, Sep, Oct

Not a pest but a management issue. This plant sets and sheds seed prolifically, so anything left to ripen builds a persistent seed bank in the soil and returns as a heavy flush of volunteers the following season. Much of that seed stays viable for years, which is why one season of letting it go can take several seasons to undo.

Watch for: Ripe seed heads or stalks shedding onto the ground, and a flush of volunteer seedlings coming up well beyond where the parent plant stood - most obvious in the first weeks of the plant's growing season.

Prevent: Cut, deadhead or harvest the seed heads before they ripen and shatter, which is far easier than dealing with what they drop. Where the plant is grown deliberately, keep it in defined rows or a contained bed so that volunteers are obvious, and site it only where naturalizing is welcome.

Treat: Hoe or hand-pull volunteers while they are small and before they set seed - the existing seed bank will keep germinating for several seasons either way, so this is an ongoing job rather than a single fix. Where the volunteers are themselves edible, harvesting them is the easiest control, but only ever eat or grow on a seedling you can positively identify.

This is how wormwood became a listed noxious weed across the northern Plains: a single mature plant can shed tens of thousands of seeds, and they stay viable in the soil for three to four years. Cut the yellow flower sprays off before they brown, bin them rather than composting, and hoe out the ring of volunteers each spring at an inch tall. One missed season costs you two or three of follow-up. Check your state and county weed lists before planting.

Absinthin Suppresses Neighbouring Plants High DisorderApr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct

Wormwood chemically suppresses the plants around it, and unlike most companion-planting claims this one is documented. Absinthin and related compounds leach from the roots into the surrounding soil and wash off the felted leaves in rain - researchers have recovered absinthin from raindrops running off the foliage - while volatile emissions from the aerial parts add a second route. Published trials record inhibited wheat germination and stunted fennel growth from wormwood volatiles alone. Germinating seed and young seedlings are by far the most sensitive stage; established woody plants tolerate it much better. The effect is strongest within a few feet of the plant, builds where a plant has stood for years, and fades over a season or two once the plant is removed.

Watch for: Direct-sown rows that germinate patchily or not at all at the end nearest the wormwood. Seedlings that emerge and then simply stall while identical seedlings elsewhere in the bed grow away. Established perennials thinning out on the side of a border the wormwood reached. A ring of bare or sparse ground under and immediately around a mature plant, where even weeds are thin.

Prevent: Site the plant deliberately and permanently: a dry corner, a gravel bed, a path edge, or a large container, at least 3 to 4 feet clear of any vegetable bed and further from a seedbed. Keep it out of raised beds shared with crops entirely. Do not let rain run off the plant onto ground you intend to sow, and do not site it uphill of a seedbed. Group it with other established drought-tolerant woody plants rather than with annuals and seedlings.

Treat: There is no spray or amendment for this; it is a spacing problem. Move the wormwood, or move what you are trying to grow. If the plant has been in place for years, dig it out completely, water the ground well over a season to leach residues, add compost, and sow a test row of a fast crop such as radish before committing the bed. Compost the removed foliage separately or bin it, since the residues carry over in undecomposed leaf litter.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Cluster on the soft silver shoot tips after the spring cutback, then vanish once growth hardens. A jet of water or simply pinching out the worst tips is enough, and the hard spring pruning removes most overwintering sites. Never spray a plant you intend to harvest for bitters.

Powdery Mildew Low DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Turns up in humid summers on crowded plants and wherever sprinklers wet the felted foliage, which holds water badly. Space at a full 2 feet, water at the base only, and take the plant back at the spring cutback - on something this tough it is cosmetic rather than damaging.

Spider Mites Low PestJun, Jul, Aug

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

Mostly a problem on container-grown or wall-sheltered plants in a hot dry spell, where the fine felted leaves make the stippling hard to spot until webbing appears. Hose the foliage down in the evening if you see it; an in-ground plant in open air rarely needs anything.

Rust Low DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

A minor fungal leaf disease that raises orange to rusty-brown pustules on the foliage in humid, crowded, poorly ventilated conditions. On a tough, well-sited plant it is cosmetic - it marks the leaves late in the season and the plant grows straight through it - and it is rarely worth treating.

Watch for: Orange to rusty-brown flecks, spots or streaks on the leaves, often raised and powdery on the undersides, worst in muggy weather and on crowded, shaded or poorly ventilated plants.

Prevent: Space plants for airflow, grow them in full sun, and avoid overhead watering. Remove the old foliage at the annual cut-back, since spores carry over on last year's leaves.

Treat: Remove affected foliage and improve airflow. This is almost always cosmetic and outgrown, so fungicide is rarely warranted.

Included here because it is the artemisia most gardeners are actually sold, and it is not this species: 'Powis Castle' is a hybrid usually attributed to A. absinthium crossed with A. arborescens. It matters practically. It is showier, more finely cut and more reliably mound-forming, it rarely flowers and sets essentially no seed - so it will not self-sow the way true wormwood does - and it is less cold-hardy, roughly zone 6 to 9. If you want silver foliage without the seeding problem, this is the better plant. If you want wormwood for bitters or medicine, it is the wrong one.

'Silver Ghost'

Taller, upright silver plant that stays cleanly foliar well into late summer before its flowers appear.

Because the silver foliage is not interrupted by flowering, it holds its clean silver look far longer through the season. Harder to find in North America than the Lambrook pair, but worth seeking out for a foliage planting.

Grow

Full sun, poor gritty soil, sharp drainage, and a site well clear of anything you eat. Space plants about 2 feet apart; start from cuttings or transplants rather than the fussy light-dependent seed.

Choose the site first, because it matters more than anything you do afterwards. Wormwood wants full sun and poor, lean, sharply drained soil — a gravel bed, a dry bank, the hot strip by a path, a big terracotta pot. It performs badly in shade and in rich ground, where the stems grow soft and flop by midsummer, and it dies outright in soil that stays wet in winter. Do not amend the bed for it, and do not feed it. Then place it 3 to 4 feet clear of any vegetable bed or seedbed, and further if you can, because of the allelopathy described in the Overview.

Space plants about 2 feet apart (18 to 36 inches depending on how open you want the planting) and allow for a mound roughly as wide as it is tall. From seed, sow indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost: the seed is dust-fine and needs light to germinate, so scatter it on the surface, press it in, do not cover it, and keep it cool — around 60–70°F — and just moist. Expect 10 to 30 days, unevenly. Honestly, most gardeners are better served by a bought plant or a cutting from a friend; one plant is usually more wormwood than a household needs, and seed-raised plants vary in how silver they turn out.

Set plants out from a couple of weeks before the last frost through late spring. Water them in and keep them going for the first month while they root, then leave them alone. They are drought-tolerant from the first summer and fully hardy in the ground from zone 4 through zone 8.

Care

One hard cutback in early spring, one shear after flowering, no food, no extra water, and the seed heads removed before they ripen. Renew the plant from cuttings every three or four years as it goes woody.

The care calendar has three appointments. Early spring: cut the whole plant back hard, to 6 to 8 inches, into the low woody framework but leaving visible buds. This is the job that keeps wormwood dense, silver and upright rather than a bare-legged sprawl with a hole in the middle; miss it two years running and you will be looking at a replacement. Late June to August: cut for harvest as the flower buds swell, which is also when the leaves are most bitter and most aromatic. After flowering: shear back by a third to a half and, critically, get the seed heads off before they ripen.

Between those, do very little. No fertilizer — rich soil makes soft, floppy, less bitter growth. No routine watering once established; an unwatered wormwood is a better wormwood. No overhead sprinkling, which flattens the felted leaves and encourages mildew and rust in humid weather. It is genuinely deer-resistant and rabbits leave it alone too.

Two ongoing tasks. Weed out the volunteers in a ring around the parent each spring while they are an inch tall — this takes minutes if you do it and an afternoon if you don't. And plan to renew the plant every three or four years: wormwood gets woody, sparse and open with age even with disciplined pruning, so take cuttings from a good plant in early summer and replace the old one rather than nursing it. In winter, leave the top growth standing to shelter the crown, and make sure nothing is holding water against the base.

Harvest

Cut leafy stems on a dry morning in the days just before the flowers open, when oil and bitterness peak - no more than a third of the plant at once, or shear it by half for a drying crop. Wear gloves.

Timing is simple and it matters: cut just before the flowers open, when the buds have swollen but are still tight, usually somewhere between late June and early August depending on your season. That is when essential oil content and bitterness are highest. Once the plant has bloomed the leaves grey off and the flavor drops away, so a harvest taken in September is a poor shadow of one taken in July.

Work on a dry morning after the dew has burned off and cut whole leafy stems with shears rather than stripping leaves off in the field — the stems make the herb far easier to hang and dry. Take no more than a third of an established plant at a time and it will push out fresh growth; if you want a real quantity of dried herb, shear the whole plant by about half as it comes into bud, which harvests and deflowers it in one pass. A single mature plant gives more dried wormwood in one cut than most households will use in a year.

Wear gloves and long sleeves. Daisy-family foliage causes contact dermatitis in some people and wormwood is a common culprit; wash your hands afterwards and keep them away from your eyes while you work. Do not harvest in the first year — take a few sprigs if you must, but let the plant build its base.

Storage

Hang small bundles upside down somewhere dark, dry and airy, then strip the leaves into airtight jars away from light. Dried wormwood keeps its bitterness for about a year; it also stores well as a tincture or a moth sachet.

Bundle the cut stems loosely — a handful per bundle, no more, or the middle goes musty — and hang them upside down in a dark, dry, airy place out of the sun. An attic, a shed rafter, or an airing cupboard all work. They are ready when the leaves crumble at a touch, usually one to two weeks. Strip the leaves and buds off the stems and pack them into airtight jars, stored in the dark, and label them clearly: dried wormwood looks a lot like several other grey herbs and tastes like nothing else on earth.

Dried leaf keeps its bitterness well for about a year, fading gently after that rather than spoiling. A dehydrator on its lowest setting works if your climate is humid, but keep it under about 100°F, since real heat drives off the aromatic oils. For longer keeping, wormwood stores very well as an alcohol tincture or a steeped bitters base — the bitter principles extract readily into spirit and keep for years in a dark bottle. And the classic non-culinary storage is a moth sachet: dried leaves in muslin among woollens, a use so old it is written into the plant's folk names.

Propagation & seed saving

Cuttings in early summer and division in spring are quick and give you the parent plant's silver; seed is slow, light-dependent and variable. The realistic problem is not propagating wormwood but stopping it - deadhead every year.

Cuttings are the best route and the reason you will never need to buy this plant twice. Take 4-inch semi-ripe tip cuttings in early summer, strip the lower leaves, push them into gritty free-draining mix, keep them shaded and barely moist, and expect roots in three to four weeks. Division works too: in spring, lift a clump and pull or cut the outer, younger growth away from the woody centre, discarding the old middle. Both methods clone the parent, which matters if you have a particularly silver plant or a named cultivar like 'Lambrook Silver'.

Seed is straightforward in principle and fiddly in practice. It is dust-fine and needs light, so it must be surface-sown and pressed in, never covered, and kept cool and just moist; germination runs 10 to 30 days and is uneven. Seed-raised plants vary in how silver and how compact they turn out. Collect your own seed by letting one flower spray dry on the plant — but understand what you are doing, because that is the same act as letting it seed itself.

Which is the real point of this section. Wormwood's propagation problem is the opposite of most herbs': a mature plant can shed tens of thousands of seeds, viable in the soil for three to four years, and this is exactly how it became a noxious weed across the northern Plains. Cut the flower sprays off while they are still yellow, bin them rather than composting them, and hoe out the ring of volunteers every spring. If you want more plants, take a cutting; do not let it seed to get them.

Nutrition

Not a food in any meaningful sense. Wormwood is used in pinches and drops for its bitterness, and its dietary role is as a bitter that stimulates saliva, stomach acid and bile before a meal - not as a source of nutrients.

There is no nutritional case for wormwood and it would be dishonest to construct one. It is used in pinches and drops, it is far too bitter to eat in quantity, and eating it in quantity would be a bad idea for reasons covered under Medicine. Nutrient tables per 100 grams are meaningless here, because nobody consumes 100 grams of wormwood.

What it actually contributes is bitterness, and bitterness is a real physiological signal rather than just a flavor. Absinthin, wormwood's defining sesquiterpene lactone, is bitter at extraordinary dilution — detectable at concentrations measured in parts per tens of thousands — and bitter compounds on the tongue trigger saliva, gastric secretion and bile release. That is the entire traditional logic of the aperitif and the digestive bitter, and it is why wormwood ended up in vermouth and in bitters bottles rather than in the salad bowl. Treat it as a seasoning of the palate, not as food.

In the kitchen

The bitter in vermouth (Wermut) and the defining herb of absinthe, plus homemade bitters and aperitifs. Always tiny amounts, always extracted into alcohol or infused briefly - never cooked with like a leafy herb.

Wormwood's culinary life is almost entirely in drinks. Vermouth takes its name directly from it: German Wermut became French vermouth, and while modern recipes are elaborate botanical blends, wormwood is the herb the whole category is named after. Absinthe is built on it — 'grande wormwood' with green anise and fennel — and it turns up in amari, aperitif wines, homemade bitters, and the old English 'purl', ale bittered with wormwood before hops took over. In Central and Eastern Europe a wormwood sprig in a jar of spirit is still a household digestive.

The technique is always the same: extract, briefly, into alcohol, and use a fraction of what you think. A single 2-inch sprig or a scant teaspoon of dried leaf will comfortably bitter a bottle of wine or spirit in a day or two of steeping; leave it a week and the result is undrinkable. Taste as you go and pull the herb out the moment it is bitter enough — over-extraction cannot be undone. Wormwood is not a cooking herb: it does not go in stuffings, rubs or salads the way sage or savory do, and a handful in a dish is simply inedible. Historically a few leaves were laid over roasting goose or fatty meat and removed before serving, which is about the limit of its kitchen use.

One regulatory note worth knowing if you make things to share: in the US, finished foods and beverages made with Artemisia absinthium must be thujone-free as the FDA defines it (under 10 parts per million), which is why commercial absinthe is legal again but a homemade high-extraction wormwood liqueur is a different proposition. Keep home infusions light, brief and small.

Traditional & historical uses

The English name records the oldest use: wormwood was the classic European vermifuge, given to expel intestinal worms, and it appears in that role from the Ebers papyrus through Dioscorides and Culpeper into nineteenth-century household medicine. Its other great traditional use is as a bitter tonic — a small, weak, pre-meal dose to stimulate appetite, saliva, stomach acid and bile in people with sluggish digestion, poor appetite or convalescent weakness. It was also used traditionally for fevers, for menstrual complaints, and as an insect and moth repellent, which was never a medical claim at all.

What modern evidence actually shows. The most interesting work is in Crohn's disease: two small controlled German trials (one of 40 patients on a herbal blend containing wormwood, one of 20 on dried wormwood powder) reported reduced steroid requirement, falling TNF-alpha levels and symptom improvement against a control. That is a real and unusual signal for a traditional bitter. It is also about sixty patients in total, from a single research group, unreplicated at scale, and it has produced no approved treatment anywhere. Small preliminary trials of topical wormwood ointment for knee osteoarthritis exist and are similarly thin. Laboratory work shows antiparasitic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, but lab activity is not a human treatment, and self-treating a suspected parasite infection with a garden herb instead of getting diagnosed is a genuinely bad idea. A frequent confusion is worth clearing up: the antimalarial drug artemisinin comes from sweet wormwood, Artemisia annua — a different species. This plant is not an antimalarial.

Thujone, honestly. Wormwood contains thujone, a neurotoxin that antagonises GABA-A receptors and is a convulsant at high doses. The nineteenth-century mythology of 'absinthism' — hallucinations, madness, Van Gogh's ear — has been substantially dismantled: modern analysis of pre-ban and current absinthe finds thujone at only a few milligrams per liter, far below any level that could cause those effects, and the damage was overwhelmingly the alcohol, at 60–70% ABV, plus adulterants. But the compound itself is not harmless, and the honest position is that the dose is unknowable at home: thujone content swings enormously between chemotypes, and wormwood essential oil has been measured anywhere from almost none to well over half thujone, with genuinely thujone-free strains at one end. The concentrated oil is where the documented harm sits — the best-known case is a man who drank about 10 mL of steam-distilled wormwood oil and suffered seizures and acute kidney failure. Reported poisonings are rare and involve the oil, not tea or vermouth; the distinctions that matter are oil versus dilute infusion, and dose versus duration.

Practical cautions. Traditional use is weak, brief and supervised: a small dose, taken for days or a couple of weeks, not months, and not habitually. Never take the essential oil internally. Do not use wormwood medicinally in pregnancy — it has a long traditional use as an emmenagogue and abortifacient — or while breastfeeding. Avoid it entirely with epilepsy or any seizure disorder, and it may reduce the effect of anticonvulsant medication. Avoid with kidney disease, with stomach or intestinal ulcers, and if you are allergic to the daisy family (ragweed, chamomile, marigolds), where cross-reaction is common. Handling the fresh plant causes contact dermatitis in some people. History

Named for expelling worms, sacred to Artemis, a proverb for bitterness in the Bible, the bitter in ale before hops, the herb that named vermouth, and the scapegoat of the absinthe bans of 1905-1915 - lifted in the US only in 2007.

Wormwood is one of the oldest recorded medicinal plants in the Western world. It appears in the Ebers papyrus around 1550 BC, in Dioscorides and Pliny, and throughout medieval herbals. The genus honours Artemis, and the English name is Old English wermod, which passed into German as Wermut and from there into French as vermouth — so the bottle in your drinks cabinet is named after this plant. Its bitterness became proverbial: 'wormwood' stands for bitterness itself in the Bible, and Revelation names a star Wormwood that turns the waters bitter.

Practically, it was everywhere in the pre-modern household. It was strewn on floors and packed among clothes against fleas and moths, it bittered ale before hops became standard, and it was the standard remedy for intestinal worms — the name is the job description. It reached North America with early settlers in the early 1800s, planted as a medicinal and flavoring herb, and escaped: it is now naturalized across the northern states and prairie provinces and is a state-listed noxious weed in North Dakota (listed in 1971, and since found in every county), South Dakota (added statewide in 2021), Colorado (List B) and Washington (Class C), with county listings in Montana on top of that. It invades pasture, reduces forage and taints the milk of cows that graze it.

Its most famous chapter is the shortest. Absinthe, distilled with grande wormwood, anise and fennel, went from a Swiss tonic to the drink of nineteenth-century Paris and then to a moral panic. Blamed for madness, crime and Van Gogh's ear, and vigorously attacked by a French wine industry ruined by phylloxera, it was banned in Switzerland in 1910, the US in 1912 and France in 1915. Modern chemistry has largely exonerated the herb: the thujone levels involved were far too low to explain 'absinthism', which looks in retrospect like ordinary alcoholism at 70% ABV. The bans were lifted in Switzerland in 2005, the US in 2007, and France in 2011, and wormwood is once again grown legally for the drink that made it notorious.

Troubleshooting

Flopping stems mean soil too rich or too shady; a dead plant after winter usually drowned rather than froze; a bare woody middle means missed spring cutbacks; and if nothing grows near it, that is the allelopathy working as designed.

Stems flop open in midsummer and the middle is bare. Two causes, often together: soil that is too rich or too well fed, and not enough sun. Wormwood is built for hard, lean, baked ground. Stop feeding it, stop watering it, move it into full sun if you can, and cut it back hard next spring to 6 to 8 inches. On a plant that has been neglected for years the cutback may not be enough — take cuttings and start again.

It died over winter. Almost always wet, not cold. Wormwood is hardy well below zero but rots in ground that stays saturated in winter, and heavy leafy mulch piled against the crown does the same job. Replant on a raised, gritty, sharply drained spot, keep mulch off the base, and leave the top growth standing over winter rather than cutting to the ground in autumn.

Nothing will grow within a few feet of it. That is the plant working as designed. Absinthin leaches from the roots and washes off the leaves in rain, suppressing germination and growth nearby — documented against wheat and fennel among others. The fix is spatial: move the wormwood, or move what you are trying to grow, and allow generous clearance from beds and seedbeds. Effects fade over a season or two once the plant is gone.

Seedlings everywhere. You let it flower and ripen. Cut the yellow sprays off before the seed browns, bin them rather than composting, and hoe the ring of volunteers each spring while they are an inch tall. Seed stays viable in the soil for three to four years, so expect a couple of seasons of follow-up after one missed year.

Grey-white powder or orange pustules on the leaves. Powdery mildew and rust show up on crowded plants in humid weather, particularly where sprinklers wet the foliage. Space plants properly, water at the base, cut out the worst growth, and take the whole plant back at the spring cutback — on a plant this tough it is cosmetic.

A rash after cutting it. Daisy-family contact dermatitis, common enough. Gloves and long sleeves, wash afterwards, and see a clinician if it is severe or spreading.

Is this wormwood or mugwort? Turn a leaf over. Wormwood is silver-grey and softly hairy on both surfaces and grows as a woody-based mound; mugwort is dark green above and bright white beneath and comes up as a crowd of tall canes from running rhizomes. If you have cows or goats, note that wormwood browsed in pasture taints milk with its bitterness.

Growing across climates

Comfortably hardy zones 4-8 anywhere with sharp drainage; marginal in zone 3 and only worth trying in dry-summer western zone 9. Humid summers cause foliage decline, and in the northern Plains it is a weed you should not be planting at all.

Zones 4-8: the reliable range, and wormwood is genuinely tough within it — hardy to around −30°F in the ground, drought-tolerant, and content on poor soil. The limiting factor across this whole band is not winter cold but winter wet: a plant on heavy ground that stays saturated will die at zone 6 while an identical plant on gravel sails through zone 4. Drainage is the whole story.

Zone 3: marginal but attempted. Give it a sheltered, sharply drained, snow-covered site and expect losses in an open winter; many northern gardeners simply take cuttings each autumn as insurance.

Warm and humid regions: this is where wormwood struggles, and the reason is summer, not winter. In climates with high summer rainfall and humidity — the Southeast, the Gulf, and the lower Midwest in a wet year — the foliage declines, the stems lodge and sprawl, and root rot takes plants out. Zone 9 is only worth trying in the dry-summer West, inland California and the Southwest, planted in autumn so it roots in the cool season. In the humid Southeast, grow it in a gritty pot you can keep dry and shelter from summer downpours, or choose a different silver plant.

Northern Plains and Intermountain West: a special case, and a warning rather than a growing tip. This is where escaped wormwood has become a genuine agricultural weed — invading pasture and rangeland, reducing forage, tainting dairy milk — and where it is a state-listed noxious weed in North Dakota and South Dakota, listed in Colorado (List B) and Washington (Class C), and declared in several Montana counties. In those states planting it is not a judgement call, it is prohibited. If you garden there, check your state and county weed list before planting anything in this genus, and if it is listed, don't. Everywhere else, the containment rule is the same wherever you are: cut the flower sprays before they ripen, every single year.
