The heat-hungriest vine in the family, trading a long, hot season and a lot of room for the taste of summer itself.
Watermelon is the crop that most rewards a long, hot summer. A sprawling warm-season vine from Africa, it needs 70 to 100 warm days, full sun, and real room — a single plant can run 8 to 12 feet — to build fruit that store shelves rarely match. Unlike its cousins it is not from the genus Cucumis; it's Citrullus, which is why, handily, it shrugs off the bacterial wilt that kills cucumbers and melons.
Size and season length drive every choice. Icebox types (Sugar Baby, New Hampshire Midget) ripen a 6-10 pound melon in 70-80 days and suit small gardens and short seasons; full-size heirlooms (Crimson Sweet, Charleston Gray, Jubilee) want 85-100 days and space for 20-40 pound fruit. And because watermelon won't ripen a bit further once cut, reading its ripeness signs is the real skill of growing it.

A soil-borne fungus (Fusarium oxysporum) that infects roots and plugs the water vessels, yellowing and wilting vines from the base up, often one runner at a time. Host-specific strains attack watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber separately, and the fungus persists in soil for many years.
Watch for: Older leaves and one whole runner yellowing and wilting while the rest looks healthy, stunting, and a reddish-brown streak in the water-conducting tissue when you slice a wilted stem lengthwise.
Prevent: Resistant varieties and grafted rootstock are the main defense; rotate cucurbits out of infected beds for 5+ years; plant in warm, well-drained soil; raise soil pH toward neutral where wilt is chronic.
Treat: None once a plant is infected - remove it and rely on resistant varieties and long rotations. The fungus builds up in soil, so where it appears switch that bed to resistant lines or other crop families.

Treat: Hand-pick in the cool early morning when beetles are sluggish; kaolin clay deters feeding; spot-treat heavy pressure at flowering with an evening insecticide application to spare bees. Controlling beetles is really about preventing the wilt they spread.
Watermelon is essentially immune to the bacterial wilt these beetles carry, so the damage here is direct feeding, rind scarring, and mosaic-virus spread rather than wilt.

Flat, gray-brown shield-shaped bugs that pierce leaves and stems to suck sap, injecting a toxin that wilts and browns foliage. Adults and gray nymphs cluster at the plant base and can overwhelm young plants; they are hardest to kill once mature.

Prevent: Scrape egg masses off leaves into soapy water; clear old vines and mulch that shelter overwintering adults; lay a board at dusk and destroy the bugs that gather beneath it by morning; row covers until bloom.
Treat: Hand-pick adults and crush egg clusters daily - this alone controls small plantings. Target young nymphs with insecticidal soap or neem; mature adults shrug off most sprays, so timing on the nymph stage is everything.
Watermelon is a secondary host; squash bugs damage young vines but prefer squash and pumpkin.
Squash Vine Borer Pest LowJun, Jul
The larva of a clearwing moth that looks like a wasp. The moth lays eggs at the base of stems in early summer; the grub tunnels inside and hollows the vine, cutting off water so the plant wilts and collapses seemingly overnight. Squash and pumpkins are the favored hosts.
Watch for: Sudden wilting of a whole vine in midsummer, a small hole near the stem base oozing wet, sawdust-like frass, and orange-and-black moths flying by day.
Prevent: Cover young plants with row fabric until flowering (remove for pollination); wrap or mound soil over the lower stem to block egg-laying; plant a second sowing in early July after the moth's main flight; grow resistant Cucurbita moschata types where borers are severe.
Treat: At the first frass, slit the stem lengthwise, dig out and destroy the grub, then bury that stem section in moist soil to re-root. Bury vine nodes along the row so the plant survives even if the crown is lost. Destroy spent vines in fall.
Rarely a watermelon problem - the borer strongly prefers Cucurbita (squash, pumpkin) over Citrullus.

In shorter seasons, start seed indoors two to three weeks early in peat or paper pots you can plant whole (the roots don't transplant well) and lay black plastic to bank soil heat; in the coldest melon zones that plastic is close to mandatory.
Give each plant serious room: hills 3-4 feet apart in rows 6-8 feet apart, or a couple of plants per generously spaced hill. Full sun and rich, well-drained soil are essential. Trellising isn't practical for most watermelons — the fruit is simply too heavy — so plan for ground-running vines and mulch beneath to keep fruit clean and warm.

Because a watermelon will not sweeten one bit off the vine, err toward waiting until the signs line up, then cut the stem with a knife (don't twist) and leave a couple inches attached. If you tracked pollination dates, most types ripen 30-45 days after the female flower opens, a useful cross-check on the visual cues.
Storage
Whole melons keep a week or two cool; refrigerate once cut, and pickle the rind or freeze cubes for the surplus.
An uncut watermelon keeps a week or two at cool room temperature and up to two to three weeks refrigerated — slightly warm storage (55-60°F) actually preserves flavor and the red lycopene better than deep cold. Propagation & seed saving
Seed is ready with the ripe fruit; isolate open-pollinated types, skip hybrids, and note that seedless melons can't self-perpetuate.
Saving watermelon seed is easy because the seed is mature exactly when the fruit is ripe to eat. Scoop seeds from a ripe open-pollinated (non-hybrid) melon, rinse away the pulp — no fermentation needed — and dry them thoroughly on a plate for a week or two. Stored cool and dry, watermelon seed stays viable 4-6 years or more.
Two things to know. First, watermelon varieties cross with each other (though not with cucumbers, muskmelons, or squash), so isolate by a few hundred feet or hand-pollinate for pure seed; crossing only affects next year's plants, never this year's fruit. Second, seedless (triploid) watermelons are a genetic dead end — they set little or no viable seed and even need a separate seeded variety planted alongside as a pollen source, so you buy that seed fresh each year rather than saving it.
