Pomelo
Pomelo carries the same drug interaction as grapefruit - it is grapefruit's parent, and its furanocoumarins block CYP3A4, which can raise blood levels of statins, some blood-pressure and heart drugs, and immunosuppressants such as tacrolimus and cyclosporine. Case reports name pomelo specifically. If a medicine you take carries a grapefruit warning, treat pomelo the same way and ask your pharmacist. Peel oils are phototoxic on skin - rinse hands after peeling.
Overview
The largest citrus in the world and grapefruit's parent - a big, handsome tree bearing 2-to-4-pound fruit you peel twice to reach firm, sweet, low-acid segments. Milder and far less bitter than grapefruit. It also carries the same CYP3A4 drug interaction, and it is the one people actually eat by the segment.
The pomelo is the giant of the citrus family and one of its three ancestral species - nearly every other citrus in this catalog, the grapefruit and the sweet orange included, carries pomelo in its parentage. The fruit is enormous, often two to four pounds and sometimes far more, with the thickest rind and the thickest spongy white pith of any citrus. You do not slice a pomelo; you peel it twice, first away the heavy rind and pith, then the tough membrane off each segment, to reach what you actually eat: firm, plump, separate juice vesicles that hold their shape instead of bursting. That texture is the whole point. A pomelo does not run down your wrist. It comes apart into crisp, sweet, gently tart beads that behave more like a fruit salad ingredient than like a dripping orange.
Anyone who knows only grapefruit is usually surprised by how mild a good pomelo is - lower in acid, much less bitter, sweet rather than sharp. It is a big evergreen tree with the biggest leaves and biggest flowers in citrus, downy young shoots, and a long, slow ripening of six to nine months. It grows happily in the humid subtropics as well as the dry ones, so unlike a grapefruit it does not need desert heat to be worth eating. Grow it in the ground in zones 9b to 11 and give it real room. One thing must be said plainly up front: the pomelo carries the same drug interaction as grapefruit - it is, after all, grapefruit's parent - and of the two catalog citrus that do, this is the one people eat as fresh fruit. Watch out for
Citrus Greening (Huanglongbing / HLB) High
The most serious citrus disease in the world, and effectively a death sentence for an infected tree. A bacterial infection (Candidatus Liberibacter) spread by the Asian citrus psyllid blocks the tree's vascular system, causing blotchy mottled leaves, yellow-shoot dieback, and small, misshapen, lopsided fruit that stays green at the stem end and tastes bitter. Every commercial citrus type is susceptible, there is NO cure, and it has collapsed much of Florida's citrus industry. It is the reason citrus plants and fruit are under quarantine restriction across much of the southern United States.
Watch for: Asymmetric, blotchy yellow mottling on the leaves - the pattern does not match from one side of the midrib to the other, which is what distinguishes it from a nutrient deficiency - along with yellow-shoot dieback, small lopsided fruit that stays green at the stem end, bitter off-flavored juice, and the tiny Asian citrus psyllid feeding on new flushes.
Prevent: Buy only certified disease-free trees from a reputable source, and never move citrus plants, cuttings or fruit out of a quarantine area - that is how it travels between regions. Control the Asian citrus psyllid on new flushes, and remove infected trees promptly to protect the ones nearby. No resistant common variety exists yet.
Treat: There is no cure. An infected tree declines and dies and should be removed to stop the spread rather than nursed along. Management is entirely exclusion: clean stock, psyllid control, and destroying infected trees. Report a suspected case to your state agriculture department or extension office, which is how local quarantine programs track and contain it.
Pomelo is susceptible like every other citrus, and because it takes six to nine months to ripen a crop, an infected tree wastes most of a year before the fruit tells you. Watch the leaves and shoots, not the fruit, and buy clean certified stock.
Citrus Canker High
A highly contagious bacterial disease (Xanthomonas citri) that causes raised, corky, tan-to-brown lesions surrounded by yellow halos on leaves, stems, and fruit, leading to premature leaf and fruit drop, twig dieback, and blemished fruit; it spreads fast in warm, wet, windy weather. Grapefruit is among the MOST canker-susceptible citrus.
Watch for: Raised, corky, brown lesions with a distinctive yellow halo (and sometimes a water-soaked margin) on both sides of leaves, on stems, and on fruit; premature leaf and fruit drop.
Prevent: Buy certified disease-free trees; don't move plants or fruit out of quarantine areas. Avoid overhead watering and don't work the tree when wet (the bacteria spread in water films). Windbreaks reduce wind-driven spread; leaf-miner control helps, since its wounds admit the bacteria. Choose less-susceptible varieties where available.
Treat: No cure for infected tissue; copper sprays protect new growth in high-pressure areas. Remove and destroy infected leaves and prunings, and sanitize tools. In quarantine regions, follow official removal/management rules.
Pomelo is among the more canker-susceptible citrus, alongside grapefruit, and its big dense low canopy holds moisture - so airflow pruning and never working the tree wet matter more here than on an open-habit citrus.
Scale & Sooty Mold Medium
Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.
Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.
Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.
Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.
A pomelo's dense, low, shaded inner canopy is ideal scale habitat, and it is the part of the tree you never look at. Opening the canopy for airflow and light is the most useful prevention on this species.
Citrus Leaf Miner Medium
A tiny moth whose larvae mine winding, silvery serpentine tunnels just under the surface of new citrus leaves, curling, twisting and distorting them. It attacks only the tender new-growth flushes, never mature leaves or fruit, so on an established tree it is essentially cosmetic - but it can stunt a young tree, and the wounds it leaves in the leaf provide entry points for citrus canker bacteria, which is its real significance.
Watch for: Silvery, squiggling serpentine trails inside new leaves, and curled, twisted, distorted new growth on the flushes. Mature leaves and fruit are untouched.
Prevent: Established trees tolerate it, so the aim is to give it less to work with: avoid over-fertilizing, which pushes out the excess soft flushes it feeds on, and stop feeding by late summer so there is no tender autumn flush to mine. Encourage the parasitic wasps that control it, and protect young trees and new grafts, whose growth actually matters.
Treat: Largely cosmetic on an established tree - prune off heavily mined flushes if you want to, and otherwise leave it alone rather than spraying for appearance. Horticultural oil applied to new flushes deters egg-laying. Systemic controls are used mainly on young trees or where canker pressure is high.
Pomelo's very large leaves show the mines dramatically, which makes the damage look worse than it is. It matters mainly because pomelo is canker-susceptible and the miner's wounds let canker in.
Aphids Low
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
On citrus this is a spring and fall flush problem - aphids ride the tender new growth and distort it, and some species transmit citrus viruses. The honeydew and sooty mold are usually more noticeable than the aphids themselves.
Spider Mites Low
Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.
Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.
Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.
Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.
Mainly a problem on drought-stressed trees in dry inland heat, and on the rare container pomelo wintered indoors. A well-watered outdoor tree in humid climates seldom suffers.

Grow
Plant a grafted pomelo in full sun and free-draining soil, in the ground in zones 9b-11, and give it far more space than other citrus. Most types fruit alone. Feed it well, water it steadily, thin a heavy set, and prop the limbs - the fruit is genuinely heavy.
Buy a healthy grafted pomelo from a reputable, disease-free nursery: grafted trees bear in three or four years rather than the six to ten a seedling takes, and the rootstock does the work of resisting root disease and suiting your soil. Choose by flesh colour and use. Chandler is the standard American pink pomelo and the easiest to find - sweet, juicy, reliable. Reinking is its white-fleshed sibling. Hirado Buntan is the pick where winters are marginal, being the most cold-tolerant of the common types. Tahitian is a low-acid, faintly lime-scented curiosity, and the Thai types such as Kao Panne are the sweet, dry-fleshed pomelos of Southeast Asian markets.
Give it full sun, free-draining soil, and above all space. This is the largest citrus you can plant - twenty to forty feet high and nearly as wide, with a dense low-branching habit - so site it as you would a shade tree, not as you would a lemon by the back door. Feed generously, water evenly but never soggy, prune lightly for access and airflow, thin and support the heavy crop, and scout new flushes for leaf miner, scale, aphids, canker, and the greening psyllid. The distinctive care job is managing the weight of the fruit.
Pomelo care is ordinary citrus care scaled up. Feed through the warm season with a micronutrient citrus fertilizer - a tree carrying a hundred pounds of fruit is genuinely hungry, and hunger shows first as leaf yellowing (overall pale means nitrogen; yellow between green veins means iron or manganese). Water deeply and evenly when the top inch or two dries, keeping drainage sharp; root rot from wet feet kills more home citrus than everything else combined, and erratic watering during sizing splits the big fruit. Prune lightly: remove dead, crossing and inward wood, take out suckers below the graft, and open the low dense canopy enough that you can walk in and reach the crop - a pomelo branches low and thickly, and an unmanaged one becomes a wall.
The care job that belongs to this species is weight. Thin clusters on young trees, prop or tie heavy limbs before the fruit sizes up, and do not let a four-pound fruit hang from a pencil-thick outer twig. Otherwise, scout the tender new-growth flushes for the usual citrus pests: citrus leaf miner (silvery leaf trails), aphids, scale insects and mealybugs with the sooty mold their honeydew grows, and spider mites in dry air. In affected regions watch for citrus canker (corky lesions ringed with yellow halos, spread by wind-driven rain) and the far graver citrus greening, spread by the Asian citrus psyllid and incurable - which is why clean certified stock and psyllid control matter so much on any citrus you plant.
Harvest
Cut the fruit off with clippers in fall or winter when the skin turns from deep green to pale yellow-green and the fruit is heavy for its size. Then let it rest a week or two before opening - not to sweeten it, which is impossible, but to make it peel and eat better.
Pomelos ripen through fall into winter after six to nine months on the tree - one of the slowest ripenings in citrus. Ready fruit has turned from deep green to a pale greenish-yellow or yellow (some varieties stay noticeably green-tinged even when ripe), feels heavy for its size, gives very slightly to a firm press, and smells fragrant when you scratch the stem end. Do not try to twist a pomelo off. It is far too heavy and you will tear the branch; use clippers, cut the stem short, and support the fruit with your other hand as it comes free.
Then comes the one piece of pomelo lore worth knowing: most growers let the picked fruit rest a week or two at room temperature before opening it. Be clear about why, because it is easy to get wrong. Citrus is non-climacteric, meaning it does not ripen after picking and a pomelo will not gain any sugar off the tree. What the rest does is let the thick rind give up a little moisture and the sharpness settle, so the fruit peels away far more easily and tastes rounder. If a pomelo you have just cut seems harsh or hard to peel, that is usually the answer rather than a sign you picked too early. Left on the tree far too long, on the other hand, the segments go dry and cottony, so take the crop across the fall-and-winter window. A mature tree bears heavily - a few dozen to well over a hundred enormous fruit - so plan to give plenty away.
Storage
The best-keeping citrus there is. That thick rind protects the fruit for weeks at room temperature and a month or more refrigerated, and it actually improves for the first week or two. Segments freeze poorly; candied pith and marmalade are the preserving routes.
The pomelo's thick rind and thicker pith are effectively a built-in shipping crate, and they make it the longest-keeping common citrus. Whole pomelos hold two to four weeks at cool room temperature and often a month or more in the refrigerator without deteriorating, and the first week or two of that actually improves them. In Asia they are shipped and stacked without refrigeration for exactly this reason, and it is why a pomelo is a practical fruit to give away by the armload - the recipient does not have to deal with it that day.
Once opened, peeled segments keep three or four days refrigerated in a closed container and no longer. Freezing whole segments is disappointing: the firm separate vesicles that make a pomelo worth eating collapse into mush on thawing, so freeze the juice instead if you must. The two real preserving routes both use the parts you would otherwise throw away. Candied pomelo pith is a genuine Asian confection - the thick white layer is cut into batons, blanched through several changes of water to pull out the bitterness, then simmered in syrup and dried. And the rind makes an excellent, gently bitter marmalade, alone or blended with a sharper citrus. Between four weeks of natural keeping and a use for the pith, very little of a pomelo harvest needs to be wasted.
In the kitchen
Eaten fresh by the segment, dipped in salt and chili, or tossed into Southeast Asian salads where the firm vesicles hold their shape. Milder and sweeter than grapefruit, so it needs no sugar. The thick pith candies; the rind makes marmalade; the whole fruit is a festival gift across Asia.
A pomelo is prepared by hand, not with a knife and a spoon. Score the rind in quarters, pull it and the thick pith away, break the fruit into segments, then strip the membrane off each segment and let the firm juice vesicles fall out in clumps. That last step is the one first-timers skip and then wonder why the fruit tasted tough - the membrane is chewy and where most of the bitterness lives. What is left is sweet, mild, low in acid, and crisp enough to hold its shape, which is the pomelo's real culinary gift.
Eaten plain it needs nothing, unlike a grapefruit; across Southeast Asia it is also dipped in a mix of salt, sugar and chili, or in a Thai prik gluea style dip, which is a revelation if you have only eaten it unadorned. Because the vesicles stay separate, pomelo is a salad fruit in a way no other citrus is: Thai yam som-o tosses it with shrimp or chicken, toasted coconut, fried shallots, peanuts, lime and fish sauce, and Vietnamese goi buoi does something similar - the fruit stays crunchy through the dressing. It also goes into fresh spring rolls, sits well with avocado, shellfish, fennel, mint and chili, and juices into a mild, non-bitter drink. The thick pith candies into a chewy confection, the rind becomes marmalade, and in China and Vietnam the whole fruit is a gift and an offering at the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year, where the hollowed rind traditionally becomes a hat for the children. When serving it to guests, though, remember the medication caution in the Medicine section - a pomelo is not a safe substitute for someone who has been told to avoid grapefruit.
Growing across climates
In-ground in zones 9b-11, and more adaptable than grapefruit: it fruits well in the humid subtropics as well as dry heat, and tolerates salt and heavy soil better than most citrus. Frost-tender below about 26-28°F. Containers are possible but this is a very large tree.
Zones 10-11: pomelo country, and the range where it performs best - a large, dense, evergreen tree cropping reliably. Its climate advantage over grapefruit is worth spelling out: grapefruit demands long accumulated heat to sweeten and sulks in mild or humid conditions, whereas pomelo evolved in the humid tropics of Southeast Asia and crops well in humid Florida and the Gulf Coast as readily as in dry California and Arizona. If your summers are warm but not blazing, a pomelo is a far better bet than a grapefruit. It also tolerates saline soil and coastal conditions better than most citrus, which makes it useful in places other citrus struggle.
Zone 9b: the cold edge in the ground. Pomelo is frost-tender, damaged below roughly 26-28°F, so plant it in the warmest, most sheltered microclimate you have and be ready to protect young trees. Zone 9a: a gamble - choose Hirado Buntan, the most cold-tolerant common variety, put it against a south wall, and accept that a hard winter may cut it back. Zone 8 and colder - containers, with a caveat: a pomelo will live in a large pot and can be wintered in a bright cool room or greenhouse, but be honest about the mismatch. This is a naturally huge tree with huge fruit, so a container plant on a dwarfing rootstock will stay a handsome foliage plant that fruits sparsely, if at all. If you want a container citrus that actually crops in a cold climate, a kumquat, a Meyer lemon, or a calamansi is a better tool for the job; grow a pomelo in a pot because you want the plant, not because you want the fruit.
Troubleshooting
Tough, bitter eating almost always means the segment membranes were left on. Dry cottony flesh means the fruit hung too long. Yellow leaves mean wet roots or hunger, split fruit means erratic water, and blotchy leaves with lopsided fruit signal citrus greening.
The flesh was tough, chewy and bitter: almost certainly the segment membranes were left on. A pomelo has to be peeled twice - rind and pith first, then the skin off every individual segment. This is the single most common pomelo disappointment and it is a preparation problem, not a growing one. The flesh was dry and cottony: the fruit hung too long on the tree, or was stored far too long after picking. Silvery squiggly trails in new leaves: citrus leaf miner, cosmetic on an established tree. Sticky black leaves and bumps on stems: scale and mealybugs with their sooty mold - treat with horticultural oil. Raised, corky, tan lesions with yellow halos on leaves, stems, and fruit: citrus canker - remove infected material, do not work the tree wet, and follow local quarantine rules. Blotchy asymmetric leaf mottling, twig dieback, and small lopsided bitter fruit: the signs of citrus greening - incurable; report it and do not move the tree.
Nutrition
An excellent source of vitamin C with potassium, fiber and citrus flavonoids, and lower in acid than grapefruit so it is gentler on sensitive stomachs. Pink types add carotenoids. The compounds that make it interesting are also the ones behind the drug interaction.
Pomelo is a nutrient-dense fruit for very few calories. A serving supplies a large share of a day's vitamin C - the flesh is comparable to other citrus and the fruit is so large that a normal portion delivers plenty - along with potassium, useful fiber, and the citrus flavonoids (naringin and its relatives) that give the pith and membrane their bitterness. The pink and red-fleshed types add carotenoids, including lycopene, in the same way pink grapefruit does. Because pomelo is lower in acid than grapefruit or orange, it is often easier on people who find other citrus harsh on the stomach or the teeth, and it needs no added sugar to be palatable, which quietly makes it a better everyday fruit than a sugared half grapefruit.
There is the same honest twist here as with grapefruit: the flavonoids and furanocoumarins that make pomelo biologically interesting are precisely the compounds behind its drug interaction. So the nutrition is real and worth having - for people not taking an affected medication. As always the whole fruit beats the juice, since the fiber comes with it and the sugar is not concentrated. Propagation & seed saving
Buy grafted. Pomelo seedlings are slow, thorny, and - unlike orange or grapefruit - genuinely variable, because pomelo is one of the few citrus that does NOT reliably produce clonal nucellar seed. A seed-grown pomelo is a lottery, not a copy.
Named pomelos are propagated by grafting onto a rootstock, which resists root rot, suits your soil, and brings the tree into bearing in three or four years instead of six to ten. Buy certified, disease-free stock; it is also how you avoid moving citrus greening and canker around.
There is one propagation fact that genuinely separates pomelo from its relatives. Oranges, grapefruit, mandarins and kumquats mostly produce nucellar seed - clones of the mother tree - which is why a seed-grown orange usually comes true. Pomelo is largely monoembryonic: its seeds are sexual, not clonal, so a pomelo seedling is a genuine cross and can be anything at all. It is precisely this quality that made pomelo the parent of so much of the citrus world, grapefruit included, and it is why raising one from a supermarket seed is a lottery rather than a copy. It is still a fun project - the seeds sprout readily and make handsome, big-leaved plants - but expect a slow, thorny, unpredictable tree that may take the better part of a decade to fruit and may not fruit well when it does. To clone a tree you like, bud or graft it onto seedling rootstock in the traditional citrus way. For a reliable crop, buy a named grafted variety.

The pomelo's important medical fact is a warning, not a benefit, and it is one people routinely miss because the label on their prescription says grapefruit. Pomelo contains the same furanocoumarins as grapefruit and inhibits the intestinal enzyme CYP3A4 the same way, so affected oral medicines are not broken down as intended and their levels in the blood can rise sharply. This is not an inference from family resemblance: grapefruit is a pomelo-and-sweet-orange hybrid that inherited the trait from this parent, and pomelo has been documented doing it in its own right. The most serious reports involve transplant immunosuppressants - pomelo raising tacrolimus and cyclosporine to toxic levels - and there is a published case of rhabdomyolysis, serious muscle breakdown, in a patient who combined pomelo with a statin. The rest of the affected list is the familiar grapefruit one: certain statins, some calcium-channel blockers and heart-rhythm drugs, some anti-anxiety and psychiatric medicines, and others.
Two practical points. First, the effect can last a day or more, so taking the pill a few hours away from the fruit does not reliably avoid it. Second, and this is the part that matters most: of the two citrus in this catalog that genuinely carry the interaction, the Seville orange is the one you meet as marmalade and marinade, while the pomelo is the one you meet as fresh fruit, by the segment, often several segments at a time. A pomelo is exactly the kind of thing a well-meaning person offers to someone who has been told to give up grapefruit, on the reasonable-sounding grounds that it is milder and not bitter. It is not a safe substitute. If a medicine you take carries a grapefruit warning, treat pomelo identically and ask your pharmacist - and if you are growing a tree and sharing the crop, it is worth mentioning to whoever you hand the fruit to.
Beyond that, pomelo has the ordinary, gentle folk-medicine history of citrus - peel infusions for digestion, leaves in bathing traditions across Southeast Asia - and no proven curative power. It is nourishing fruit, not medicine.
History
One of the three ancestral citrus species, cultivated in Southeast Asia and southern China for millennia and central to Mid-Autumn and Lunar New Year customs. Carried to Barbados in the 17th century as the shaddock, where a chance cross with the sweet orange produced the grapefruit.
The pomelo is not a hybrid of anything - it is one of the small handful of true ancestral citrus species, alongside the mandarin and the citron, from which nearly the whole modern citrus family was assembled. Sweet oranges, sour oranges, grapefruit, lemons and most of the rest carry pomelo somewhere in their parentage. It has been cultivated in Southeast Asia and southern China for thousands of years, where it remains a fruit of real cultural weight: pomelos are eaten and given at the Mid-Autumn Festival and at Lunar New Year as symbols of abundance and family togetherness, the hollowed rind is worn as a hat by children, and the leaves are used in ritual bathing and cleansing customs across the region.
Its journey west gave it its other name and a famous descendant. In the 17th century an English East India Company sea captain - remembered as Captain Shaddock - is said to have carried pomelo seed from Southeast Asia to Barbados, and the fruit was called the shaddock in the Caribbean and the American South for centuries afterwards. There, growing beside the sweet orange that Spanish colonists had brought, it crossed with it by chance, and the seedling that resulted was the grapefruit - a fruit that did not exist anywhere on earth before that meeting. So the pomelo is both the oldest citrus story in this catalog and the direct cause of one of its newest. Today it is a major crop across China, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia and a growing one in California and Florida, and it is increasingly easy to find in American supermarkets and Asian groceries in winter.
