Overview

The pomegranate is one of the most forgiving fruits you can grow in a warm climate: a drought-tolerant, heat-loving, remarkably long-lived deciduous shrub (or small tree) that asks little once established and lives for decades - some ancient plants are centuries old. Give a pomegranate the hottest, sunniest, best-drained spot you have - a south-facing wall or a reflected-heat corner is ideal, especially at the cold edge of its range. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including alkaline and even somewhat salty ones, but demands good drainage; it will not thrive in soggy ground. Plant a nursery plant (or a rooted cutting - pomegranates root very easily) in spring after frost in cold-edge zones, or late winter in frost-free ones. The pomegranate is among the very oldest cultivated fruits, domesticated in the region of modern Iran and northern Central Asia at least 5,000 years ago and spread early across the Mediterranean and Middle East. Because it stores and ships so well, it became a fruit of trade, ritual, and symbol far beyond where it grew: it appears in ancient Egyptian tombs, in the Hebrew Bible (the priestly robes were hemmed with pomegranates), in Greek myth (Persephone's pomegranate seeds bind her to the underworld and explain the seasons), and across Islamic, Persian, and Armenian art and cuisine, where it remains a powerful emblem of fertility, abundance, and life - its crown-like calyx even said to have inspired royal crowns.
The name comes from the Latin pomum granatum, 'seeded apple,' and the fruit lent its name to the city of Granada and to the grenade (for its shape and scattering seeds). Spanish missionaries carried pomegranates to the Americas in the 1500s, establishing them in Mexico and California, where the tender high-yield 'Wonderful' cultivar - selected in California in the early 1900s - came to dominate the modern industry. Meanwhile Russian and Central Asian breeders selected the cold-hardy cultivars (Salavatski and kin) that let the ancient fruit push north into colder gardens. Plant a pomegranate and you're growing a fruit sacred to half the ancient world, a symbol of abundance for five millennia, and a plant that may outlive you by decades.
