Muskmelon — the netted, orange-fleshed melon most Americans call cantaloupe — is the reward crop for gardeners with heat and patience. It's a sprawling warm-season vine that needs 75 to 100 warm days and steady sun to build the sugars that make a homegrown melon taste like a different fruit from the store. Where summers are long and hot, it's easy; where they're short, it's a satisfying challenge won with warmed soil and early starts.

Uncommon on melons - the borer strongly prefers Cucurbita (squash, pumpkin) over Cucumis (melon, cucumber).

Reassuringly, melons do not cross with cucumbers, squash, or watermelon, and any crossing shows up only in next year's seedlings, never in the fruit you eat this season. History
