Leaves and flowers are edible in moderation, cooked or dried: many white clover populations are cyanogenic - crushed raw leaves release traces of cyanide - so never eat raw clover in quantity. Red clover blossoms are one of the richest plant sources of isoflavones (plant estrogens), so skip the tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a hormone-sensitive condition, take blood thinners, or have surgery coming up. Livestock on lush clover can bloat. Never gather clover from sprayed lawns.

Overview

The garden's quiet workhorse: a nitrogen-fixing legume grown not to harvest but to feed the soil, smother weeds, and carpet the ground - while its flowers feed the bees.

Clover is the rare plant you grow for what it does, not what you pick. As a legume, it partners with soil bacteria to pull nitrogen out of the air and bank it in the ground — free fertilizer for whatever you plant next. Sown as a cover crop, green manure, living mulch, or lawn substitute, it smothers weeds, holds soil against erosion, and turns a fallow bed into a self-improving one. Its flowers are among the best nectar sources going, buzzing with honeybees and bumblebees all season.

Two species do most of the work. White clover (Trifolium repens) is the low, spreading, perennial one — the living-mulch and clover-lawn standard. Red clover (T. pratense) is taller and shorter-lived, the classic forage and green-manure crop that fixes the most nitrogen. Both are edible in moderation, and both are the point of a healthier garden, not a harvest.

Watch out for

Root-Knot Nematodes Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug, Sep

Microscopic soil roundworms (Meloidogyne species) that invade roots and force them to swell into beady galls. A galled root cannot take up water and nutrients properly, so the plant stunts, yellows, wilts in heat despite watering, and yields poorly, and root and tuber crops come up forked, knobbly, hairy or cracked instead of clean. They are worst in warm, sandy soils and build up steadily wherever a susceptible crop is grown in the same ground year after year. The wounds they leave also open the way for fusarium wilt and rots.

Watch for: Stunted, yellowing, unthrifty plants that wilt in the heat even though the soil is moist, and poor yields for no obvious reason. Confirm by digging: beady swellings strung along the roots and side rootlets, and root crops that are forked, branched, cracked or knotted rather than clean.

Prevent: Rotate to non-hosts, and grow resistant varieties where they exist for your crop. A French marigold cover crop grown thickly the season before and turned in genuinely lowers populations. Build organic matter and mulch heavily, which feeds the soil life that suppresses them. Plant only clean stock, never move soil from an infested bed around the garden, and solarize badly infested ground through the hottest part of summer.

Treat: There is no in-season cure. Pull and destroy affected plants rather than composting them, and bring that ground back over several seasons with rotation, resistant varieties and marigold cover crops. Where a crop can be grown in a container of fresh mix, that sidesteps the problem entirely.

Some clovers host root-knot nematodes, so a clover cover crop chosen without checking can build populations up for the crop that follows. Match the clover species to the site's nematode history, and use a genuinely suppressive cover on badly infested ground instead.

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Clover aphid and pea aphid are the usual species on clover. On a cover crop they are rarely worth acting on - the clover's own flowers draw in the predators that keep them down, and mowing resets a bad patch.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Mostly cosmetic on a cover crop and rarely worth acting on: mow or turn the stand in and the soil benefit is unaffected. The one thing to avoid is oversowing into an airless mat.

Grow

Broadcast the tiny seed on firm, moist soil, barely cover it, and use inoculated seed so the nitrogen-fixing works.

Clover is sown, not planted: broadcast the fine seed evenly over firm, raked soil and either press it in or rake it under no more than 1/4 inch — it's too small to bury deep. Keep the surface moist until it germinates in a week or two. Cool, moist conditions suit it best, so spring and fall are the prime sowing windows.

The one step people skip is inoculation. Nitrogen fixing only happens if the right Rhizobium bacteria are in the soil to form root nodules. Buy pre-inoculated seed, or dust the seed with a clover/legume inoculant, especially on ground that hasn't grown clover before. Young clover is slow and weak, so keep weeds down until it knits into a dense mat — after that it defends itself.

Care

Almost none: mow high to keep it lush, don't fertilize (it makes its own nitrogen), and mow before seed if you want it tidy.

Clover is close to no-maintenance, which is half its appeal. Never fertilize it with nitrogen — it makes its own, and extra nitrogen actually shuts the fixation down. Water while establishing; after that it tolerates drought, though it stays greenest with some moisture. As a clover lawn or living mulch, mow high (3+ inches) now and then to keep it leafy and encourage spreading; as a green manure, just let it grow.

The main decisions are about spread and bloom. Mow as it flowers to keep a stand tidy and stop it seeding everywhere; leave some flower heads if you want it to reseed and persist, or to feed the bees. Be mindful mowing clover in bloom — it's full of pollinators, so cut in the evening or leave flowering patches.

Harvest

The real 'harvest' is soil nitrogen: turn clover in at early bloom for the biggest boost to the next crop.

Clover's yield is invisible — it's the nitrogen and organic matter left in the soil. To collect it, terminate the stand at early flowering, when nitrogen content peaks: mow it down and dig or till the green tops and roots into the soil, or cut it and leave it as a mulch. Wait two to three weeks for it to break down before planting into the bed, and the following crop feeds on the released nitrogen. A strong red-clover stand can leave 70-150 pounds of nitrogen per acre behind.

You can also lightly harvest the plant itself: pick fresh flower heads to dry for tea, or gather tender young leaves to cook. But treat these as bonuses — the crop is the improved soil, not the salad.

Storage

Dry the flowers for tea; store seed cool and dry - the living crop stays in the ground.

There's little to store from a cover crop. Flower heads dry well for herbal tea — harvest fresh, dry on a screen out of sun until crisp, and keep airtight; dried red-clover blossoms are a traditional tea — a pleasant one, though not for anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, on blood thinners, or managing a hormone-sensitive condition. Clover seed, kept cool and dry, stays viable for two to three years, useful if you save it or buy in bulk for successive sowings. The soil-improving 'product' isn't stored at all — it's banked directly in the ground where the clover grew.

Propagation & seed saving

Clover barely needs help propagating. White clover spreads on its own by creeping stolons that root as they run, quietly enlarging a patch; both species self-seed if allowed to flower and mature. To save seed deliberately, leave flower heads until they turn brown and dry, then rub them apart and winnow out the tiny hard seeds — store cool and dry.

For most gardeners the easier move is simply to let a stand reseed itself: leave some flower heads each year and the clover renews and thickens on its own. Because it's a perennial (white) or self-perpetuating short-lived perennial (red), a clover planting tends to persist and fill in without replanting, which is exactly what you want from a living mulch.

Nutrition

A modest edible: leaves and flowers offer some protein and minerals, but clover is soil food first and people food a distant second.

Clover has been humanity's soil partner for centuries. Long before anyone understood nitrogen, European farmers knew that working clover into a field made the next crop grow better, and clover became the cornerstone of the classic crop rotations that fed pre-industrial Europe — the discovery of legume nitrogen fixation later explained why. The name traces to the Old English clāfre.

Culturally, clover is woven into folklore: the rare four-leaf clover as a luck charm, and the three-leaf shamrock as a symbol of Ireland, said to have been used by St. Patrick to illustrate the Trinity. Today, as gardeners rediscover clover lawns and cover cropping, the plant is coming full circle — valued again for the same soil-building and pollinator-feeding work it's quietly done all along.

Growing across climates

A cool-season legume: cold zones grow it spring-through-fall as cover and lawn; warm zones grow it in the cool season only.

Zones 3-6: clover thrives — sow spring or late summer as a cover crop, living mulch, or clover lawn; white clover overwinters as a perennial and wakes early to fix nitrogen for spring. Zones 7-8: excellent in the cool seasons; fall-sown clover overwinters well and green-manures beautifully, while summer heat slows it.
