Not a food plant. Only the dried root is used; berries, leaves and seeds are not edible. Liver injury is documented - usually mild, rarely progressing to liver failure or death - so avoid it with any existing liver disease. Denmark prohibits it in supplements. It raises thyroid hormone levels, so avoid it with thyroid disease or medication, and it is a traditional abortifacient - avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It adds to sedatives, opposes immunosuppressants, and is a nightshade.

Overview

Ayurveda's most famous root, and one of very few herbs with real clinical trials behind it. A nightshade grown as a summer annual almost everywhere in the US: start it indoors, grow it hot, lean and dry, and dig the root in autumn of its first year.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is the best-known herb in Ayurvedic medicine and, in the last fifteen years, one of the most-studied plants in the supplement aisle. The name is Sanskrit for the smell of the horse - partly for the distinctly horsey odor of the fresh root, partly for the strength the herb was supposed to confer. It is a nightshade, a cousin of tomato, pepper and potato, which matters both for crop rotation and for anyone who reacts to that family.

In the garden it is a gray-green bushy plant two to four feet tall, carrying small greenish-yellow bells that become orange-red berries in papery lantern husks - the reason it is also called winter cherry. None of that is the crop. The root is the medicine, and it is dug in autumn of the plant's first year, at 150 to 180 days from sowing. That long, warm requirement is the one thing that shapes how you grow it: in zones 8-11 it is a tender perennial, but almost everyone in the US grows it as an annual, and north of zone 7 that means starting seed indoors.

It is genuinely easy to grow and genuinely easy to ruin. Ashwagandha comes from dry, lean, sun-baked ground, and the two classic failures are too much water and too much soil. Treat it like a Mediterranean herb rather than a vegetable and it will hand you a fat taproot in a single season.

      Barely cover the seed - about an eighth of an inch - and hold the mix at 75-80°F. Below 70°F germination stalls or fails outright, so a heat mat is the difference between a full tray and an empty one. Sprouts appear in 10-21 days.

      Mist or bottom-water to keep the surface just moist until sprouting. A soaked tray rots the seed, and damping-off is the usual cause of a half-empty flat. Start easing off the water as soon as the seedlings are up.

      Ashwagandha is frost-tender and sulks in cold ground. Harden seedlings over a week and plant out only once nights are reliably above 50°F and the soil has reached 60°F. Waiting is cheaper than replacing a checked plant.

      Give each plant 12-24 inches, 18 inches being the practical figure. Crowded plants make leggy tops and thin, forked roots, and tight spacing in humid summers is what brings on leaf spot.

      This is a dryland plant and the classic failure is kindness. Water a new transplant in, then water only when the soil is dry several inches down - roughly every 10-14 days in normal summer weather, less in clay. Constant moisture grows a big leafy bush over a small, rot-prone root.

      Lean, sandy, slightly alkaline ground is what builds a fat taproot and strong withanolide content. Compost-rich beds and any nitrogen feed push top growth at the root's expense. If you must amend, add grit and drainage rather than fertility.

      Small greenish-yellow bells appear in the leaf axils and become orange-red berries wrapped in a papery lantern husk. They are not a crop, but they tell you the plant is mature, and they are where next year's seed comes from. Leave them on.

      Cut watering right back once berries color. A dry finish concentrates the root and makes it far easier to lift clean, where a wet finish leaves you washing mud out of a brittle taproot.

      Pick fully orange-red berries, squash them out into water, rub off the pulp, and dry the flat tan seeds on paper. One plant supplies far more seed than you will ever sow. Keep berries away from children and pets - they are not edible.

  5. Autumn root dig day 165–200 from sowing
    • Dig the whole plant in autumn of the first year
      At 150-180 days from sowing, when the lowest leaves yellow and the berries have colored, lift the entire plant. Loosen a wide circle with a fork 10-12 inches out and lever the taproot up whole rather than pulling on the stem, which snaps the root and leaves the best of it in the ground.
    • Cut the top off an inch above the crown and wash
      Sever the stem an inch or two above the crown, then hose and scrub the soil out of the root. Chop it into pencil-thick pieces while it is still fresh - a dried ashwagandha root is close to unbreakable, and cutting it later is a genuine chore.

      Light frost blackens the foliage without harming the root, but do not leave the dig until the ground is freezing. In short-season gardens dig at the first hard frost warning even if the calendar says the plant has a few days left.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

The single most common way a home ashwagandha crop is lost, and it is almost always self-inflicted. This is a dryland plant: rich soil, heavy clay, mulch piled against the stem, or watering on a schedule will rot the taproot you are growing the plant for. Plant on a raised, gritty, lean bed, water only when the soil has dried several inches down, and taper off entirely in the last weeks before you dig.

Flea Beetles Medium PestApr, May, Jun

Flea beetles are tiny dark beetles - often shiny black or bronze, rarely more than a couple of millimeters long - with enlarged back legs that let them spring away like fleas the moment you lean in. The adults chew countless small round pits and shot-holes through leaves, giving the foliage a peppered, buckshot-riddled look. They overwinter as adults in leaf litter, hedgerows, and crop debris, emerge hungry in spring, and are worst in warm dry spells. The damage is mostly a seedling and transplant problem: a small plant with a few leaves can be checked, stunted, or killed outright, while the same plant shrugs them off once it is large and growing strongly. Different species specialize on different plant families, so the beetles hammering your brassicas are not the ones on your nightshades. Some species also have larvae that feed on roots and tubers underground.

Watch for: Dozens of pinhead-sized round holes peppered across the leaves, thickest on the youngest, most tender growth. Tiny beetles that spring away as you brush the plants or lean in for a closer look - that jump is the identification. Seedlings that go lacy and stop growing, and transplants that sit and sulk instead of taking off. Damage heaviest in warm, dry weather and along the edge of a bed nearest weedy ground or last year's crop debris. On root crops, shallow narrow grooves or channels scarring the skin at harvest, from larvae feeding underground.

Prevent: Floating row cover or fine insect mesh, laid over the bed from the day of sowing or transplanting and sealed at the edges so nothing can walk in underneath, is the single best defense - and on the crops they favor it is close to essential. Leave it on until plants are large and growing strongly, or until flowering on anything that needs pollinating. Push growth: a well-watered, unchecked plant outgrows the damage, so the whole game is getting seedlings through their vulnerable weeks fast. Keep beds weed-free, since related weeds host the beetles alongside your crop, and clear crop debris at the end of the season where the adults overwinter. Rotate away from a bed that grew a related crop last year. Where you can, shift sowing dates - cooler-season and fall plantings often miss the peak of adult feeding entirely.

Treat: Row cover and healthy fast growth carry most crops through, and on an established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing at all. Where a young planting is genuinely being stripped, kaolin clay coats the leaves and deters feeding, and spinosad will knock the beetles back. Spinosad is acutely toxic to bees while the spray is still wet - apply it at dusk when bees are not flying, never onto plants in flower, and follow the product label. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating, and you must observe its pre-harvest interval on a crop you are picking. Yellow sticky traps are useful for telling you when the beetles have arrived. Where the damage falls on the part you eat, harvesting young often beats them outright; where you are growing for a root or a fruit, leaf damage can simply be tolerated. Larvae feeding underground cannot be reached by a foliar spray, so rotation and clean beds are what work against those.

The pest that can actually end a planting, because it strikes at the seedling stage. As a nightshade ashwagandha is a preferred host, and shot holes a mature plant shrugs off will stall or kill a three-inch transplant. Row-cover new transplants for the first two to three weeks, then uncover once plants are eight inches tall and growing away - after that the damage is cosmetic.

Spider Mites Medium PestJul, Aug, Sep

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

Almost built into this crop: mites thrive in the hot, dry, dusty conditions you are deliberately creating. Check leaf undersides from midsummer for fine pale stippling and webbing. A hard jet of water aimed at the undersides every few days knocks them back without changing the dry regime the root needs. Worst on plants against a sunny wall or over pavement.

Root-Knot Nematodes Medium PestJul, Aug, Sep, Oct

Microscopic soil roundworms (Meloidogyne species) that invade roots and force them to swell into beady galls. A galled root cannot take up water and nutrients properly, so the plant stunts, yellows, wilts in heat despite watering, and yields poorly, and root and tuber crops come up forked, knobbly, hairy or cracked instead of clean. They are worst in warm, sandy soils and build up steadily wherever a susceptible crop is grown in the same ground year after year. The wounds they leave also open the way for fusarium wilt and rots.

Watch for: Stunted, yellowing, unthrifty plants that wilt in the heat even though the soil is moist, and poor yields for no obvious reason. Confirm by digging: beady swellings strung along the roots and side rootlets, and root crops that are forked, branched, cracked or knotted rather than clean.

Prevent: Rotate to non-hosts, and grow resistant varieties where they exist for your crop. A French marigold cover crop grown thickly the season before and turned in genuinely lowers populations. Build organic matter and mulch heavily, which feeds the soil life that suppresses them. Plant only clean stock, never move soil from an infested bed around the garden, and solarize badly infested ground through the hottest part of summer.

Treat: There is no in-season cure. Pull and destroy affected plants rather than composting them, and bring that ground back over several seasons with rotation, resistant varieties and marigold cover crops. Where a crop can be grown in a container of fresh mix, that sidesteps the problem entirely.

More costly here than on a leaf crop, because the galled, knotted, forked root IS the harvest. Sandy southern soils are where it bites hardest. Check lifted roots for beaded swellings that will not rub off, and do not replant nightshades in that ground - a dense French marigold cover crop the preceding season is the practical home remedy.

Alternaria Leaf Blight Medium DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Fungal leaf-spotting diseases (Alternaria, Septoria and others) that make angular dark spots on the hairy leaves, especially in wet, humid weather - a very common cosmetic issue on black-eyed Susans.

Watch for: Brown-to-black circular spots with concentric rings and yellow halos, often on outer and older leaves; sunken dark lesions on the head in wet weather.

Prevent: Clean seed, 3+ year rotation, wide spacing for airflow, water at the base not overhead, and clear crop debris; avoid working plants when wet.

Treat: Remove badly affected foliage, keep leaves dry, and apply copper or a biological fungicide early in a wet season. Harvest on time - the roots stay fine even as tops decline.

The main foliar disease of ashwagandha in cultivation, worst in humid late summer and in the Southeast. Dark target-like spots spread up from the lower leaves and can defoliate a plant before the root has finished sizing. Space at a full 18-24 inches for airflow, water at the base rather than overhead, and clear the debris at the end of the season instead of composting it.

Colorado Potato Beetle Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug

The signature potato pest: a rounded yellow-and-black-striped beetle whose humpbacked brick-red larvae can strip a plant's foliage in days, cutting yield hard.

Watch for: Yellow-orange egg clusters on leaf undersides, humpbacked reddish larvae feeding in groups, and skeletonized leaves from the top down.

Prevent: Rotate potatoes far from last year's bed (adults overwinter in soil and walk to the nearest nightshade); use straw mulch and row cover on young plants; interplant beans.

Treat: Hand-pick adults and crush egg masses daily - the single most effective home control; spinosad or Bt (tenebrionis strain) for heavy pressure. They develop resistance fast, so rotate any spray.

A genuine problem where potatoes, tomatoes or eggplant grow nearby, since ashwagandha is the same family and the beetles move straight across. At least one US herb farm has selected its seed stock for tolerance over decades for exactly this reason. Hand-pick the adults, crush the orange egg clusters on leaf undersides, and rotate away from other nightshades.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Mostly on soft new growth in late spring, and rarely serious on a plant grown lean and dry. An ashwagandha covered in aphids has usually been overfed with nitrogen - the same mistake that gives you a large leafy bush and a disappointing root. A hard spray of water is normally the whole treatment.

Whiteflies Low PestJul, Aug, Sep

Tiny white sap-sucking insects that cluster on leaf undersides and lift off in a cloud when the foliage is brushed. They weaken growth, and the honeydew they excrete coats the leaves below in a sticky film that blackens with sooty mold. Some species also transmit plant viruses. They breed fast in warm, still, sheltered air, which is why they are far more trouble under cover and on plants overwintered indoors than on the same plant outside.

Watch for: Clouds of tiny white insects rising when you shake the plant, flat scale-like nymphs stuck to the leaf undersides, a sticky shine on the leaves below them, black sooty mold over that, and yellowing, weakened growth.

Prevent: Inspect the undersides of any new plant before it joins the others, and quarantine anything you are bringing under cover or indoors for winter. Avoid crowding and heavy nitrogen feeding, which produce the soft growth they prefer. Hang yellow sticky traps early to catch the build-up while it is still small, and encourage lacewings, ladybugs and parasitic wasps outdoors.

Treat: Hose off light infestations, then spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil onto the leaf undersides where they actually sit. Sprays do not kill the eggs, so repeat every few days for two or three weeks or the population simply rebuilds. Yellow sticky traps knock back the adults, and outdoors natural enemies usually finish the job.

Common on nightshades in warm regions and on any plant carried under cover, and heavy numbers sap the plant during exactly the months it should be bulking its root. Start seed indoors 6-10 weeks before last frost on a heat mat at 75-80F, then grow it in full sun in lean, sandy, sharply drained soil with very little water. It needs 150-180 days to build a usable root.

Everything starts with the calendar. A usable root takes 150-180 days from sowing, so unless you garden in a long-season zone you must start indoors 6-10 weeks before your last frost. The seed wants warmth: barely cover it and hold the mix at 75-80°F on a heat mat. Below 70°F germination stalls, which is the single most common reason a tray of ashwagandha never comes up. Sprouts appear in 10-21 days. Harden the seedlings off and set them out a week or two after last frost, once nights hold above 50°F and the soil has warmed to 60°F - this plant is frost-tender and a transplant checked by cold soil never really recovers.

Site it in full sun, with at least six hours and preferably more, in lean, sandy, sharply drained, slightly alkaline soil. This is the part gardeners get wrong. Do not enrich the bed with compost, do not feed it, and do not plant it in heavy clay or a low spot. Rich, moist ground gives you a magnificent leafy bush sitting on a thin, forked, rot-prone root, which is exactly the opposite of what you came for. Where the ground is heavy, build a raised, gritty bed or grow in a deep container - a five-gallon pot with a free-draining mix works well.

Space plants 18 inches apart (12-24 inches depending on your season length), and water deeply but rarely, only when the soil is dry several inches down. In most summers that is roughly every ten to fourteen days. Rotate it away from tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplant, since they share both family and diseases.

Care

The whole job is restraint: water only when the soil has dried several inches down, never fertilize, keep mulch off the crown, and let the plant bake in full sun until the berries color in autumn.

Ashwagandha is a low-maintenance crop whose care instructions are mostly things not to do. Do not water on a schedule - check the soil, and irrigate only when it is dry a few inches down, roughly every ten to fourteen days in normal summer weather and less in clay or a wet spell. Do not fertilize. Nitrogen produces top growth at the root's expense, and lean ground is what builds both root mass and the withanolide content the plant is grown for. Do not mulch against the stem; a damp collar is a straight route to crown rot. Bare soil or a thin gravel mulch suits it far better than the usual thick organic layer.

What you should do is hand-weed around the base while the plant is small, keep an eye on flea beetles in the first few weeks after planting out, and then largely leave it alone through July and August, which is when it does most of its growing. No staking, no pinching, no pruning - a bushy multi-stemmed plant is the normal shape and a well-fed lax one is a warning sign, not a success. As the berries color in early autumn, taper the water off completely: a dry finish concentrates the root and makes it far easier to lift clean.

Loosen a wide circle with a garden fork about 10-12 inches out from the stem and lever the taproot up from below; pulling on the stem simply snaps the root and leaves the best part in the ground. Cut the top off an inch or two above the crown, hose and scrub the soil out from between the side roots, and then - this is the step people skip and regret - chop the root into pencil-thick pieces while it is still fresh. Dried ashwagandha root is close to unbreakable, and cutting it afterwards is a job for a hacksaw.

Expect a few ounces of fresh root per plant, drying down to roughly a quarter to a third of that. Home yields vary enormously with soil and season length. If you want a meaningful quantity, grow a row of ten or twelve plants rather than one, and remember to collect a handful of berries for seed before you pull the plants out.

Dry the chopped fresh root low and slow at 95-105F until it snaps, then store the pieces whole in sealed jars in the dark - about a year at full strength as pieces, six months once ground.

Ground powder is convenient but loses potency much faster - six months is a fair working limit - so grind small batches as you need them rather than powdering the whole harvest at once. A coffee grinder kept for herbs handles it; a blender usually will not.

Label the jar with the year. The root darkens with age and looks much the same at twelve months as at three, so the date is the only honest way to know what you have.

Propagation & seed saving

Seed, and one plant makes far more than you will ever need. Squash ripe berries, rub the pulp off the flat tan seeds, dry and store cool - and in zones 9-11 expect volunteers whether you want them or not.

Softwood cuttings will root under humidity, but there is little reason to bother when seed germinates freely. In zones 9-11, dropped berries self-sow readily and you will get volunteers around the old bed; that is convenient if you want a permanent patch and a nuisance if you do not, so deadhead in frost-free gardens where the plant has room to run.

Nutrition

Not a food and not a source of nutrition. The dried root carries withanolides - the compounds behind the herb's activity and its cautions - but there is no dietary role here, and it should not be treated as a vegetable or a daily food ingredient.

Ashwagandha has no nutritional role. It is not a vegetable, and unlike most of the plants in this catalog it is not eaten for calories, fiber, or vitamins. The dried root is taken in grams or fractions of grams, as a preparation rather than a meal, and nutrient tables for it are meaningless in practice.

What the root actually contains are withanolides - a family of steroidal lactones including withaferin A and withanolide A - along with alkaloids and sitoindosides. These are the compounds behind everything interesting about the plant, both the effects being studied and the reasons for caution. Concentration varies a great deal with soil, season and how the root was dried, which is one reason clinical trials use standardized extracts rather than garden root, and one reason home-grown material is not directly comparable to a labelled supplement. Treat it as a potent herb, not as food.

In the kitchen

There is no cuisine here - ashwagandha is a preparation, not an ingredient. The dried root is simmered into a bitter decoction or stirred as powder into warm milk with honey and spice, which is the traditional way of getting past the taste.

Ashwagandha is a medicinal root rather than a culinary one, and honesty demands saying so: it is bitter, earthy and distinctly horsey, and no tradition uses it for flavor. What exists is a set of ways to make it palatable. The classic Ayurvedic preparation is powdered root stirred into warm milk with honey, often with a little cardamom, ginger or ghee - the fat and dairy carry the fat-soluble compounds and blunt the bitterness at the same time. The modern moon milk served as a bedtime drink is a direct descendant of that.

The other traditional route is a decoction: simmer a teaspoon of chopped dried root in a cup of water for fifteen to twenty minutes, strain, and sweeten. Some people simply stir the powder into a smoothie or oatmeal, which works but is not an improvement on the milk. Whichever way you take it, the practical point is that the amounts involved are small and deliberate. This is not an ingredient to cook with freely, and the safety cautions in the Medicine section apply to every one of these preparations.

The headline use, and unusually well-studied for a herb: multiple randomized trials and meta-analyses find reduced stress, anxiety and cortisol, with smaller effects on sleep. Ashwagandha is why this plant is in the catalog. In Ayurveda it is a rasayana - a rejuvenative - used for over two thousand years for weakness, exhaustion, wasting, insomnia, and as a vajikarana or aphrodisiac tonic. It is the standard example of an adaptogen, the modern term for a herb said to help the body cope with stress. Where most such claims evaporate on inspection, this one has attracted a genuine body of clinical research.

What the evidence actually shows. Multiple randomized placebo-controlled trials, and several meta-analyses pooling them, report statistically significant reductions in perceived stress and anxiety scores and in serum cortisol in adults taking standardized root extract, typically around 300-600 mg a day for six to twelve weeks. A separate meta-analysis of sleep trials found a small but real improvement in sleep quality, strongest in people with insomnia, at doses of 600 mg or more and durations over eight weeks. There is lighter, more preliminary work suggesting gains in strength and VO2max in trained subjects, and some clinical guidance now lists the extract as a possible adjunct in generalized anxiety disorder. That is a stronger evidence base than almost any other garden herb can claim.

The honest limits. The trials are small, short, and of variable quality; many are industry-funded, and a large share come from a single country, which raises real questions about publication bias. Cortisol studies rarely control for the hormone's own daily rhythm or for meals. Nothing here has produced an approved treatment anywhere, and none of it makes ashwagandha a substitute for treatment of anxiety, depression, or insomnia. Read it as promising and worth watching, not settled.

The cautions are not theoretical. Documented cases of ashwagandha-associated liver injury - typically cholestatic or mixed, with jaundice and itching, beginning two to twelve weeks after starting it - have been reported from Iceland, the United States, Japan and India. Most are mild to moderate and resolve within one to four months, but acute liver failure, emergency transplant and death have all been described, most often in people who already had cirrhosis or advanced liver disease. Anyone with existing liver disease should avoid it outright, and everyone else should treat jaundice as a stop signal rather than a side effect to push through. Regulators have moved separately: Denmark's food administration prohibits ashwagandha in food supplements - a decision resting on a 2020 national risk assessment of effects on sex hormones and reproduction, metabolism, the immune system and the nervous system rather than on the liver cases - and French and Dutch authorities have warned specific groups against it. Beyond the liver: it raises thyroid hormone levels, so it must be avoided by anyone with thyroid disease or taking thyroid medication; it is a traditional abortifacient and is contraindicated in pregnancy and while breastfeeding; it can add to sedatives and to blood pressure and blood sugar medication; it appears to stimulate immune activity, so it works against immunosuppressant drugs and is a poor idea in autoimmune disease; and being a nightshade, it is worth avoiding if you react to that family. Withdrawal-type effects on stopping have also been described. Stop immediately and see a doctor if you develop jaundice, dark urine, or unexplained abdominal pain.

History

A cornerstone of Ayurveda for well over two thousand years, named in Sanskrit for the smell of a horse and in Latin for sleep. It went global in the 2010s wellness boom and is now under regulatory scrutiny in Europe.

Ashwagandha appears in the classical Ayurvedic compendia - the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita - and has been in continuous medicinal use in India for something over two thousand years, probably longer. Its Sanskrit name joins ashva, horse, to gandha, smell: partly the frank barnyard odor of the fresh root, partly the promise of a horse's strength and vigor. The botanical name is equally pointed. Withania honors the nineteenth-century English paleobotanist Henry Witham, and somnifera means sleep-bringing - a name given long before anyone ran a sleep trial.

The plant grew as a dryland weed and crop across India, the Middle East and Africa, and cultivation concentrated in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where the Nagori type from around Nagaur has been the prized landrace for generations. Indian breeding programs later released improved lines such as Jawahar Asgandh-20 and Poshita.

Its Western career is very recent. Ashwagandha was a specialist herbalist's item until the 2010s, when the adaptogen trend, a run of published trials, and the supplement industry made it one of the fastest-growing botanicals in the world. That success brought scrutiny with it: several European regulators have since restricted or warned against it over hormonal, thyroid and liver concerns, and the debate over its safety margins is very much live. Growing your own puts you back in touch with the plant itself - which, as anyone who has cut a fresh root can confirm, really does smell like a horse.

Troubleshooting

Almost every ashwagandha problem is too much water or too much soil. A big leafy plant with a thin root, a plant wilting in damp ground, or a root that rotted in the bed all trace back to treating a dryland herb like a vegetable.

Big leafy bush, thin stringy root: the classic failure, and it is too much water and too rich a soil. Compost-heavy beds and any nitrogen feed send the plant into top growth. Next season, plant into lean sandy ground, skip the amendments entirely, and water deeply but only every ten to fourteen days.

Wilting even though the soil is damp: that is root rot, not thirst, and watering again will finish the plant. Stop irrigating, and if the bed puddles after rain move the crop to a raised gritty bed or a deep container next year. Overwatering is the number one killer of home ashwagandha.

Seed never germinated: nearly always cold soil. Ashwagandha needs 70°F and prefers 75-80°F; a windowsill in March is not warm enough. Use a heat mat, barely cover the seed, and allow the full three weeks before giving up.

Zone 7: comfortable as an annual. Start indoors 6-8 weeks ahead and you will have a full 150-180 day season with room to spare.

Zones 8-9: the sweet spot. Direct-sow once the soil reaches 70°F, and the plant is a tender perennial that will often survive a mild winter and resprout. Since the root is the crop, most growers still treat it as an annual and dig in autumn - a second-year root gets woody rather than better. In the humid Southeast, drainage matters far more than in the arid West: grow raised and gritty, and expect more leaf spot.

Zones 10-11: a true perennial and a self-sower. Grow it through the cool dry part of the year so the root sizes before the hottest, wettest months, since the limiting factor here is rot rather than frost. Deadhead if you do not want volunteers coming up around the bed.

Everywhere, the microclimate rule beats the zone map: a raised, sandy, sun-baked bed that nothing waters in August is the right home for this plant, whatever the label says.
