Sphagnum is not toxic, but wear gloves. Live moss and bagged sphagnum can both carry the fungus Sporothrix, which enters through a scratch and causes sporotrichosis - a slow chain of skin nodules spreading up the arm that needs prescription antifungal treatment, not a bandage. Handle it in gloves, dampen a dry bale before you tear it open so you are not breathing the dust, and see a doctor about any sore that will not heal after working with moss. Nothing here is edible.

Overview

The moss that builds bogs: no roots, no flowers, and cells that hold twenty times its own weight in water while acidifying everything around it. Live sphagnum is the growing medium for carnivorous plants and orchids - and it is not the same thing as the bagged peat moss stripped from bogs that took millennia to form.

Sphagnum is a true moss — no roots, no flowers, no seeds — and it is one of the most consequential plants on earth. A sphagnum carpet is built from shoots that grow at the top and die at the bottom, rising a fraction of an inch a year over its own compacting remains. Do that for five thousand years and you have a peat bog.

Two tricks make it extraordinary. First, most of a sphagnum leaf is made of large empty dead cells that act as sponges: living moss holds something like sixteen to twenty-five times its own dry weight in water, which is why a handful squeezed in your fist runs like a wrung-out cloth. Second, it acidifies its own surroundings, pulling mineral nutrients out of the water and releasing acid in exchange. Between them, those two habits let sphagnum flood the ground, strip it of nutrients and sour it — conditions almost nothing else tolerates. That is how a bog stays a bog, and it is why carnivorous plants evolved to eat insects instead of feeding from the soil.

For a gardener, that same behaviour makes live sphagnum the ideal medium and living mulch for a bog planter, for orchids, for air layering and for lining baskets. Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews and bladderworts all name it as their growing surface, and it doubles as a water-quality gauge: sphagnum dies in tap water, so moss that is going grey and slimy is telling you the water is wrong before the carnivores show it.

One distinction runs through this whole entry. Live sphagnum is the growing plant, and you can grow, crop and share it indefinitely. Peat moss is the dead, partly decomposed sphagnum mined out of bogs that took thousands of years to accumulate, and it is not a renewable product on any human timescale. They come from the same plant and they are not the same thing. And whichever you handle, wear gloves: sphagnum can carry the fungus behind sporotrichosis.

      There is no planting and no soil. Fill a tray, bog planter or lined pot with pure peat, or a peat and washed sand mix, and saturate it. Tear a handful of live sphagnum into loose fragments, spread them thinly over the surface, and press them into contact - each fragment grows into a new shoot, so a thin scattering knits into a carpet faster than a thick clump does. Never add potting soil, compost or fertilizer.

Watch out for

Mineral Burn (Bad Water & Fertilizer) High Disorderyear-round

As with all carnivores, hard, alkaline, or mineral-rich water - and any fertilizer - harms bladderwort, whose delicate stems and traps need soft, acidic, nutrient-poor water; mineral and nutrient loading dissolves the plant and feeds smothering algae.

Watch for: Traps and leaves blackening and dying back for no obvious reason, stunted weak growth, and a white mineral crust forming on the soil surface, especially in plants watered from the tap.

Prevent: Use ONLY distilled, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water, always; pot only in pure peat and washed sand/perlite; never fertilize or use potting soil, compost, or garden soil.

Treat: Dilute or fully replace with fresh pure water and move the plant to a clean, soft-water container; badly affected plants may not recover, so prevent it by keeping the water lean.

Sphagnum is the most sensitive thing in the bog and therefore the best gauge: it greys, goes slimy and dies in mineral-bearing water well before the carnivorous plants growing in it show damage, so moss failing in a healthy-looking planter is a warning to check the water. Softened water is the fastest killer of all. Flush containers through with pure water in hot weather, since evaporation concentrates whatever minerals are present.

The real threat to this plant is not in anyone's garden. Sphagnum peatlands accumulate at roughly a millimetre a year, so a metre of peat represents about a thousand years of growth, and both harvesting the moss and mining the peat beneath it remove far more than regrows. Drained and cut bogs lose the water table that keeps them alive, stop accumulating carbon and begin releasing it, and take decades to centuries to recover even with active restoration. Peatlands cover roughly three percent of the world's land and hold about a third of all soil carbon, so this is a climate question as well as a habitat one, and it takes the carnivorous plants, orchids and bog specialists down with it.

Watch for: Bagged peat and wild-gathered long-fibered sphagnum with no indication of source. Local bogs being drained, ditched or cut. Wild moss offered cheaply, which almost always means it was stripped rather than farmed. Whole mats lifted from a patch rather than the top growth cropped, which sets the colony back years.

Prevent: Grow your own live moss and crop it from the top - a single tray becomes a permanent supply and a shared handful starts another. Never collect from a wild bog: many are protected, collecting on public land or another's property needs permission and is frequently prohibited, and recovery is measured in decades. Buy farmed or nursery-propagated live moss where you can, and substitute coir, composted bark or wood fibre for peat in general potting, keeping peat for the bog and carnivorous mixes where nothing else works.

Treat: Nothing a gardener does repairs a cut bog; the work is restoration by conservation bodies, reflooding drained ground and reintroducing living sphagnum. What a gardener controls is demand: reduce peat use, propagate and share live moss instead of buying wild-gathered stock, and support local bog and pocosin conservation.

Sporotrichosis from Handling Moss Medium Disorderyear-round

A hazard to the gardener rather than the plant, and the reason gloves belong with sphagnum. The soil fungus Sporothrix lives on sphagnum, on rose thorns and on other plant debris, and it can enter through a scratch, splinter or thorn prick while handling live moss or dried bagged sphagnum. The result is sporotrichosis, sometimes called rose gardener's disease: a small firm nodule appears at the wound days to weeks later, then further nodules follow in a chain up the limb along the lymphatic vessels, often with little pain and no fever. It is uncommon, it is not contagious between people, and it is treatable - but it needs prescription antifungal medication for weeks to months and it will not resolve under a bandage.

Watch for: A small painless firm bump at the site of a scratch or thorn prick days or weeks after handling moss, which may ulcer. A line of similar nodules appearing up the forearm from it. Any sore linked to plant work that simply will not heal. People with weakened immune systems can develop more serious lung or joint infection, particularly after breathing dust from dry moss.

Prevent: Wear gloves for all handling of live moss, dried sphagnum and bagged peat, and long sleeves when working with rose canes and other thorny material in the same session. Dampen a dry bale before tearing it open so you are not breathing the dust, and work outdoors or in ventilated space. Cover existing cuts and scratches before you start, and wash your hands and forearms afterwards.

Treat: See a doctor rather than treating it at home - it needs prescription antifungal medication, typically for several weeks to months, and antibiotics will not touch it. Tell the doctor you have been handling sphagnum moss or peat, because that history is what makes an unusual skin infection immediately recognisable. Nothing here is medical advice.

Sphagnum has no roots and no way to fetch water, so it lives entirely on what is held in and beneath the carpet. A container that runs dry, or a carpet in strong sun and hot dry air, bleaches from green to straw and then to white and crisp. Moss survives short dry spells and revives when rewetted, but repeated drying kills the growing heads and lets the carpet break up. Dry indoor air, an outdoor tray in a heatwave, a reservoir forgotten during winter freezing, and simple sun scorch in a low-humidity climate are all versions of the same failure.

Watch for: Colour draining from green to pale straw, then to white. Growing heads shrivelling and the carpet feeling springy and dry rather than sodden. A reservoir that has run empty, often unnoticed in a heatwave or during winter. Bleaching on the sunny side of a tray while the shaded side stays green.

Prevent: Keep the container standing in an inch or two of pure water at all times, and check it daily in hot weather. In hot, bright, dry climates give afternoon shade, use a deeper reservoir, and consider a partial cover to hold humidity. Indoors, a covered tray keeps the air around the moss damp. Do not forget the reservoir over winter, when a freeze can empty a tray without you noticing.

Treat: Rewet thoroughly with pure water and be patient - the green heads that survive will start growing again within weeks, and a partly bleached carpet often recovers completely. Where the heads are dead the moss will not regreen, so pick out the white crisp material and reseed those patches with fresh fragments from a living part of the same tray.

In the wild sphagnum defends itself by making the ground too acidic and too nutrient-poor for competitors. In a tray that defence is easily broken. Once nutrients or minerals get in - fertiliser runoff, a fed plant sharing the container, compost or soil splash, bird droppings, a mat of decaying tree leaves, or hard water - green algae film, liverworts, grasses and tree seedlings move in and shade the moss out. The invaders are a symptom rather than the disease: their arrival is usually the first visible sign that the water or the nutrient balance has gone wrong.

Watch for: A slick green algae film spreading over the wet surface. Flat liverwort thalli, grass blades or tree seedlings appearing in the carpet. Sphagnum thinning and paling underneath the invaders. Fallen leaves matted on the surface, which both smother and feed.

Prevent: Water only with rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water, and never fertilize, directly or indirectly. Keep the container away from runoff, from fertilised beds and from soil splash, and do not share a tray with anything that gets fed. Sweep fallen leaves off in autumn before they mat down. Flush containers through with pure water in hot weather so evaporation does not concentrate minerals.

Treat: Pick the invaders out by hand as they appear, taking grass and tree seedlings out by the root, and then find and fix the source of the nutrients rather than just weeding repeatedly. Flush the container thoroughly with pure water. Where algae has taken a section completely, clear it, flush, and reseed the gap with fragments from a clean part of the carpet.

The growing plant, and the only form that regrows. Dozens of species occur in the US and they are genuinely difficult to tell apart without a microscope, so live moss is almost always sold and shared simply as sphagnum. Practically it makes little difference: all of them hold vast amounts of water, acidify their surroundings and strip nutrients from the water. Green, gold and bronze forms are the usual garden moss, growing in dense hummocks or loose wet carpets. Cropped from the top and left to regrow, a single tray is a permanent supply.

The bagged, dried whole moss sold for orchids, air layering and basket liners, mostly harvested in New Zealand and Chile. It is real sphagnum, dried rather than decomposed, and it rehydrates into an excellent long-lasting medium - but it is dead and will not grow, however wet you keep it. Some of it is now cropped from farmed beds on a genuinely renewable cycle and some is wild-gathered; the label rarely tells you which. The bagged brown peat in every potting mix, and the source of endless confusion. Sphagnum peat is dead, partly decomposed sphagnum mined from bogs where it accumulated at roughly a millimetre a year over thousands of years - so while it is made of this plant, it is not a renewable product on any human timescale, and extraction releases carbon from one of the world's largest soil stores. It is still the standard base for carnivorous plant and bog mixes because nothing else matches its acidity and structure; coir, composted bark and wood fibre substitute well for general potting. Use it deliberately and sparingly, and grow live moss on top of it.

Grow

Scatter live fragments over saturated peat in a tray or bog planter, keep the surface permanently wet with rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water only, give it bright light with shade from baking sun, and never fertilize. Tap water and any nutrient will kill it.

Growing sphagnum is less gardening than running a small bog, and it comes down to three rules: keep it wet, keep it pure, and keep it lean.

The container. A plastic tray, a lined pot with no drainage hole, a mixing tub or a purpose-built bog planter all work. Fill it with pure peat, or peat mixed with washed silica sand or perlite, and saturate it thoroughly before you start — dry peat repels water and takes a day to wet through. No potting soil, no compost, no bark, no fertilizer, and nothing that has had fertilizer in it.

Starting it. Tear a handful of live moss into loose fragments and spread them thinly over the wet surface, pressing them into contact. Every fragment can grow into a new shoot, so a thin scattering knits into a full carpet faster than a thick pad does. Stand the container in a tray holding an inch or two of water so the peat wicks up continuously. A clear cover or dome while it establishes keeps humidity high, though it must come off if things get hot.

The water is the whole thing. Use rainwater, distilled water or reverse osmosis water only. Tap, well, spring, softened and most bottled water carry dissolved minerals that build up in the peat and kill sphagnum — softened water is the worst of the lot. Never let the surface dry out; sphagnum survives drying, but a carpet that repeatedly crisps will not thrive.

Light. Bright light gives dense, compact growth and brings out the reds and golds in the coloured species; deep shade gives thin, straggly, pale moss. In cool humid climates it takes full sun. In hot, bright, dry climates give it afternoon shade, because sun plus heat bleaches a carpet to straw very quickly even when it is standing in water.

Indoors, the same rules apply on a smaller scale: a covered tray on a bright windowsill or under a modest grow light, watered with pure water, will keep live sphagnum going year-round as a source of moss for orchids and air layers.

Care

Keep the reservoir topped up with pure water, never fertilize, pick out algae, liverworts and seedlings before they shade the moss, sweep fallen leaves off in autumn, and let it freeze in winter. Almost every problem is either the wrong water or nutrients getting in.

An established sphagnum carpet is close to maintenance-free, and almost everything that goes wrong traces back to one of two causes: the wrong water, or nutrients getting in.

Water. Top up the tray or reservoir with rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water so the surface never dries. In hot weather, evaporation concentrates whatever minerals are present, so it is worth flushing the container occasionally — pouring pure water through until it runs out — to wash accumulated salts down and away.

Never feed it. Sphagnum lives on rainfall and dust and absorbs nutrients so efficiently that fertilizer is lethal rather than helpful. That includes indirect feeding: runoff from a fertilised bed, a fertilised plant sharing the tray, compost splash, bird droppings, and a thick mat of decaying leaves all deliver nutrients the moss is not built to handle.

Weed it. In the wild, sphagnum wins by making the ground uninhabitable; in a tray it can simply be overgrown. Pick out algae films, liverworts, grass and tree seedlings as they appear. Their arrival is diagnostic — a sudden crop of green algae usually means nutrients or minerals have got into the water.

Autumn and winter. Sweep fallen leaves off the carpet before they mat down. Outdoors, sphagnum is arctic-hardy and needs no protection: a bog planter that freezes solid comes through fine. The winter mistake is letting a container dry out while you have stopped thinking about watering, and the other is salted runoff, which is as fatal as tap water.

And wear gloves, every time. Sphagnum can carry Sporothrix, the fungus behind sporotrichosis, which enters through a scratch and is a genuine, if uncommon, medical nuisance rather than a garden one.

Harvest

Crop live moss the way a bog does: take the green top inch or two with scissors or gloved fingers and leave the lower living stems, and the mat closes over and regrows in a season. Never lift the whole carpet - that is exactly what wild harvesting does wrong.

A healthy carpet can be cropped indefinitely if you take it from the top.

The method. With gloves on, gather the green top growth and cut or pinch off the top one to two inches, leaving the lower living stems and the peat below them undisturbed. The remaining shoots branch and close the gap, and a cropped patch is usually indistinguishable again within a season. What you must not do is lift or roll the whole mat: that takes the living plants and the accumulated peat together and sets the patch back years, which is precisely the damage that commercial wild harvesting inflicts on bogs.

Use it fresh where you can. Live moss is at its best for lining hanging baskets and wire planters, top-dressing orchids, packing around an air layer on a shrub or a rubber plant, starting fine seed, and as a living mulch over a bog planter, where it keeps the surface acidic and wet and shows you at a glance whether your water is clean.

To store it, spread it thinly somewhere airy and out of direct sun until it is dry and springy, then keep it in a paper sack or an open box rather than sealed plastic, which sours it. Dried sphagnum rehydrates and works perfectly well as a medium, but it is no longer alive and will not regrow.

One thing not to do: do not gather moss from a wild bog. Bogs regenerate over decades to centuries, many are protected, and collecting from public land or someone else's property needs permission and is often prohibited outright. A shared handful from another grower is genuinely all you need to start a supply that then lasts forever.

The easiest propagation in the catalog: tear a handful into fragments, scatter them thinly on wet peat, and every piece grows into a new shoot. It also makes spores, fired from little dark capsules, but fragmentation is the whole practical method.

Sphagnum propagates by falling apart, and that is the entire practical method. Tear a handful of live moss into loose fragments — individual shoots, or even pieces of shoot — scatter them thinly across saturated peat, and press them into contact. Each fragment regenerates a new growing head. A single small handful, spread thinly rather than piled up, will cover a tray within a season or two, and that tray then supplies every basket, orchid pot and air layer you will ever want.

It also reproduces sexually, and it does so with a genuinely startling piece of engineering. In summer, small dark spherical capsules rise on short stalks above the carpet, dry out, build up internal air pressure, and then fire their spores explosively — fast enough to punch the spore cloud up out of the still air near the ground and into the wind. That is how sphagnum colonises a new seep or a wet ditch a mile away. For a grower it is a curiosity rather than a technique; spores are slow and fiddly, and fragments are instant.

Because it multiplies this readily, sphagnum is the classic pass-along plant among bog and orchid growers. Take a handful from a friend's tray, or buy live moss from a nursery that propagates its own, and you never need to buy it — or take it from a wild bog — again.

Nutrition

Not a food. Its significance is ecological: peatlands cover about three percent of the world's land and hold roughly a third of all soil carbon, and sphagnum is the plant that builds them - acidifying, waterlogging and preserving everything it grows over.

Nothing here is eaten, and sphagnum has no nutritional role for people at all. Its importance is ecological, and it is out of proportion to the size of the plant.

It is a global carbon store. Peatlands cover something like three percent of the world's land surface and hold roughly a third of all soil carbon — more than the world's forests. That carbon is there because sphagnum makes decomposition nearly impossible: the waterlogged, acidic, oxygen-poor, nutrient-stripped conditions it creates stop the bacteria and fungi that would normally break dead plants down. Drain or dig a peatland and that stored carbon starts oxidising into the atmosphere, which is why peat extraction and bog drainage matter far beyond the bog itself. It is also why bogs preserve things: pollen records, timbers, and the famous bog bodies.

It engineers its own habitat. By holding water high above the water table and exchanging mineral nutrients for acid, sphagnum creates the conditions that define an entire community — cranberry, bog rosemary, leatherleaf, orchids, and the carnivorous plants that had to evolve insect-eating precisely because sphagnum had stripped the nutrients out of the ground beneath them.

And it has one genuine practical property worth knowing: sphagnum is naturally absorbent, acidic and mildly antiseptic, which is why it was used as a wound dressing on an industrial scale during the First World War, and long before that as diapering, bedding and wound packing across the northern world. That history is under History; the point here is that the same chemistry that stores carbon is what made the moss useful in the first place.

History

Used for wound dressings, diapers and bedding across the northern world for millennia, gathered by the million for field dressings in the First World War, then mined at industrial scale for fuel and for the peat in every bag of potting mix - which is what the peat-free movement is now trying to undo.

Sphagnum's usefulness was obvious long before anyone knew why it worked. Across the boreal world — among Indigenous peoples of North America, in Scandinavia, in Ireland and Scotland — it was used as wound packing, diapering, menstrual padding, bedding, insulation and lamp wick. It absorbs enormous quantities of fluid, it is acidic enough to discourage bacteria, and it is free wherever it grows.

That knowledge was industrialised in the First World War. With cotton in desperately short supply, Britain, Ireland, Canada and the United States organised civilian volunteers to gather, clean and sew sphagnum into field dressings by the million every month. They outperformed cotton wool: more absorbent, cooler, and slower to sour. It is the most concentrated practical use this plant has ever had, and it is still the reason sphagnum turns up in first-aid folklore.

The other industrial history is peat. Cut and dried, peat has been domestic fuel in Ireland, Scotland and northern Europe for centuries and was later burned in power stations; milled and bagged, it became the standard base of potting composts and soil conditioners worldwide through the twentieth century. Both uses mine a deposit that accumulates at roughly a millimetre a year, in bogs that are among the richest and most threatened habitats in the temperate world.

Which brings the story to now. The peat-free movement — well advanced in the UK and Europe, gathering pace in North America — has pushed growers toward coir, composted bark, wood fibre and green-waste composts, while restoration projects reflood drained bogs and reintroduce living sphagnum to start the process again. Some commercial live sphagnum is now farmed on a genuinely renewable cycle in New Zealand and Chile, cropped from the top and left to regrow. Growing your own live moss in a tray is a very small version of the same idea.

Troubleshooting

Grey, slimy or dying moss is almost always tap water; pale crisp moss is drying or scorching; algae and liverworts mean nutrients got in. Peat moss in a bag is not the same thing as live sphagnum, do not collect from a wild bog, and see a doctor about a sore that will not heal after handling moss.

“It went grey, slimy and died.” Almost always the water. Tap, well, spring, softened and most bottled water carry dissolved minerals that accumulate in the peat and kill sphagnum — softened water fastest of all. Switch to rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water, flush the container through, and start again with fresh fragments. A white crust on the surface confirms it.

“It has gone pale, straw-coloured and crisp.” It dried out, or it is being scorched. Sphagnum must stay permanently wet; keep the reservoir topped up. If it is wet and still bleaching, it is getting too much sun for your heat — move it into afternoon shade.

“Algae and liverworts are taking over.” Nutrients or minerals have got into the system: fertiliser runoff, a fed plant sharing the tray, compost splash, decaying leaves or hard water. Pick the invaders out, find the source, flush with pure water, and stop whatever was feeding it.

“Is the peat moss in the bag the same plant?” Same plant, entirely different product. Bagged sphagnum peat is dead, partly decomposed moss mined from bogs that took millennia to build; bagged long-fibered sphagnum is dried whole moss, also harvested. Neither will grow. Only living moss regrows, which is why a home tray is worth keeping.

“Can I collect some from a bog near me?” Don't. Bogs recover over decades or centuries, many are protected, and collecting on public land or someone else's property needs permission and is frequently prohibited. Get a handful from another grower or a nursery that propagates its own.

“It grows so slowly.” That is the plant. An inch or two of height a year is normal, and a carpet fills in over seasons. Thin, straggly growth usually means too little light; dense compact heads mean you have it right.

“I have a sore on my hand that will not heal.” Take it seriously. Sporotrichosis starts as a small nodule at a scratch and then makes a slow chain of lumps travelling up the arm; it needs prescription antifungal treatment. Tell the doctor you have been handling sphagnum, because that detail is what makes the diagnosis obvious. Gloves prevent essentially all of it.

Growing across climates

A cool, wet, acid-ground plant, hardy from the Arctic down: superb outdoors across the North, the Great Lakes, New England, the Appalachians and the Pacific Northwest, workable in the humid Southeast with shade, and a covered indoor tray in hot dry regions.

Sphagnum is limited by water and heat rather than by cold. It is arctic-hardy — a frozen carpet is normal — and what it cannot cope with is drying out and baking.

Boreal North, Great Lakes, New England and the northern Rockies (zones 3-5): home ground, and where the great peatlands are. Outdoor bog planters need almost nothing but rainwater and freezing is a non-issue.

Pacific Northwest and coastal Northern California: close to ideal. Cool, humid, reliably wet air grows superb dense moss in full sun.

Appalachians and the Northeast (zones 5-7): excellent in mountain and shaded sites; the natural range of many native species, and easy outdoors with pure water.

Southeast coastal plain (zones 8-9): native here too, in the pocosins and wet savannas alongside pitcher plants and sundews, but summer heat means afternoon shade and a deeper water reservoir. Evaporation concentrates minerals fast in this heat, so flush containers more often.

Interior West and Southwest: the hard case. Low humidity and intense sun bleach and desiccate sphagnum even standing in water, and rainwater is scarce enough that most growers work from stored rain or reverse osmosis. Here it is a shaded, covered tray or an indoor project rather than a garden feature.

Indoors anywhere: a covered tray on a bright windowsill, watered with pure water, is a reliable year-round source of live moss regardless of the climate outside.
