Venus Flytrap
Not a food plant and not a human food source - it is grown purely as a living curiosity, and its snap traps are far too small and weak to harm a person or pet. Do NOT trigger the traps for fun or feed them table scraps, meat, or cheese: each trap can only close a few times before it dies, and rich human food rots inside and kills the trap. It is safe around children and pets but should be admired, not poked.

The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is the most famous carnivorous plant in the world, and one of the most misunderstood. Each leaf ends in a hinged, spine-fringed snap trap that closes in a fraction of a second when an insect touches its trigger hairs, then slowly digests the prey. It does this because it grows in nutrient-poor, acidic, waterlogged bog where roots can't get enough nitrogen - so it catches its own from insects. That single fact drives everything about how to grow it.
Remarkably, the wild flytrap is native to just one small region on Earth: the coastal plain within about 75 miles of Wilmington, North Carolina, reaching into a corner of coastal South Carolina. It is heavily poached from the wild - so much so that collecting it is now a felony in North Carolina - which is why every gardener should buy only nursery-propagated plants and never dig one up. Grown right - blazing sun, only rain or distilled water, a lean peat-and-sand mix, and a cool winter dormancy - a flytrap is a long-lived, fascinating living curiosity. Grown wrong - on a warm windowsill, watered from the tap, potted in soil - it dies within a year, which is why they have an undeserved reputation as disposable novelties.

Growing a Venus flytrap well means copying its bog exactly, and it comes down to four rules. Sun: give it as much direct sun as you can - a bare minimum of 4-6 hours, ideally full all-day sun outdoors. Strong light is what turns the trap interiors deep red and keeps the plant compact and vigorous; a shady windowsill produces weak, floppy, all-green plants. Water: keep the medium constantly wet by standing the pot in a tray of distilled, rain, or reverse-osmosis water only. Propagation & seed saving
Multiply flytraps by dividing the clump or separating natural offshoots in early spring, or by leaf pullings; seed works but is slow, taking several years to reach size. Never take plants from the wild.
Healthy flytraps multiply readily, which is exactly why nursery-grown plants are cheap and wild-collecting is inexcusable. The easiest method is division: a vigorous plant produces offshoots (rosettes) around its base, and in early spring, as it comes out of dormancy, you can lift the clump and gently separate these into new plants, each with its own roots. Leaf pullings also work - detach a whole leaf with a bit of the white basal tissue, lay it on damp peat in bright, humid conditions, and small plantlets often form at the base.
Seed is the slow route: hand-pollinate the flowers, sow the fine seed fresh on damp peat in warmth and light, and be patient - seedlings take several years to reach mature size. Because propagation is so straightforward, there is never any reason to remove a plant from the wild - and doing so is both illegal in its home range and a real threat to the species. Buy nursery-propagated stock and divide your own.
Nutrition
Not human food - the 'nutrition' story is the plant's own: it traps and digests insects to get the nitrogen its bog soil can't supply. Fertilizer and rich food are poisons, not feed, to a flytrap.
A Venus flytrap has no role as human food or nutrition - it is toxic to the idea of eating in the sense that it is simply not a crop. What is genuinely fascinating is its own nutrition. Flytraps live in bog so poor in nitrogen and minerals that roots alone can't sustain them, so the plant evolved to catch and digest animals instead.
