Overview

A legume that flowers above ground and ripens its pods below it: plant in warm sandy soil, let it peg down, and dig a protein-rich crop that fixes its own nitrogen.

The peanut is one of the garden's true botanical marvels — a legume (not a nut) that flowers above ground, then drives its fertilized flower stalks down into the soil, where the pods form and ripen underground. That underground habit gives it its other names, groundnut and goober, and makes harvest a treasure-dig. Like its bean and pea cousins, it fixes its own nitrogen, so it feeds itself and improves the soil for the next crop.

Peanuts need a long, warm season (roughly 120-150 frost-free days) and loose, sandy soil the pegs can penetrate, which is why they're a Southern staple. Squirrels, chipmunks, voles and mice are the wildlife that competes with you most directly for a crop. They take ripening nuts, seed and fruit off the plant, usually before you judge it ready, and cache what they do not eat. They also dig up freshly planted bulbs and sown seed, and voles tunnel in to gnaw bulbs and roots underground through winter. They climb anything, they know exactly when a crop is ripe, and a determined pair can clear a small tree or a new planting in a few days.

Watch for: Chewed husks, shells or hulls scattered under the plant, fruit and nuts vanishing as they ripen, and gnawed or half-eaten windfalls. On new plantings: freshly dug holes and scattered soil, bulbs missing or gnawed, dug-up seed rows, vole runways under the mulch, and gaps in spring where you know you planted.

Prevent: For a crop on the plant, timely and frequent harvest is the real defense - gather daily through the ripening window rather than leaving anything to hang, and pick slightly early to finish indoors where the crop allows it. Net or bag what you can reach. For bulbs and sown seed, lay wire mesh or hardware cloth over the planting, plant deeper, use buried wire baskets, and clear away the papery tunics and debris that advertise a fresh planting. Trunk baffles slow climbers on isolated trees, clearing jumping routes from nearby trees and roofs helps, and removing brush cover reduces the rodents sheltering nearby.

Treat: There is no rescue for what has already been eaten, so this is a prevention problem. Re-cover disturbed plantings with mesh promptly, replant losses inside cages, and trap or exclude persistent diggers where that is legal locally. On a large tree, accept that you will share the crop and concentrate on gathering promptly.

The buried, protein-rich pods are a magnet for foragers, especially as the plants dry down and signal ripeness. Harvesting on time rather than leaving pods in the ground is the most practical defense.

Microscopic soil roundworms (Meloidogyne species) that invade roots and force them to swell into beady galls. A galled root cannot take up water and nutrients properly, so the plant stunts, yellows, wilts in heat despite watering, and yields poorly, and root and tuber crops come up forked, knobbly, hairy or cracked instead of clean. They are worst in warm, sandy soils and build up steadily wherever a susceptible crop is grown in the same ground year after year. The wounds they leave also open the way for fusarium wilt and rots.

Watch for: Stunted, yellowing, unthrifty plants that wilt in the heat even though the soil is moist, and poor yields for no obvious reason. Confirm by digging: beady swellings strung along the roots and side rootlets, and root crops that are forked, branched, cracked or knotted rather than clean.

Prevent: Rotate to non-hosts, and grow resistant varieties where they exist for your crop. A French marigold cover crop grown thickly the season before and turned in genuinely lowers populations. Build organic matter and mulch heavily, which feeds the soil life that suppresses them. Plant only clean stock, never move soil from an infested bed around the garden, and solarize badly infested ground through the hottest part of summer.

Treat: There is no in-season cure. Pull and destroy affected plants rather than composting them, and bring that ground back over several seasons with rotation, resistant varieties and marigold cover crops. Where a crop can be grown in a container of fresh mix, that sidesteps the problem entirely.

Galls form on peanut roots and on the pegs and pods themselves, so pod fill suffers as well as top growth. The same warm sandy soils that suit peanut favor these nematodes, which makes rotation doubly important.

Thrips Medium PestMay, Jun, Jul

Tiny slender sap-sucking insects that rasp at leaves, buds and petals and drink what runs out, leaving silvery-white streaking and fine flecking, brown scorched patches, and new growth that comes out twisted or fails to open. They breed fast in hot, dry weather, shelter deep in leaf sheaths, folds and unopened buds where sprays struggle to reach, and several species also transmit plant viruses - which is often more damaging than the feeding itself.

Watch for: Silvery-white streaks and fine speckling on leaves and petals, brown discolored patches, distorted buds and blooms that fail to open properly, and tiny sliver-like insects that drop out when you shake foliage or a flower over a sheet of white paper. Worst in hot, dry spells and on drought-stressed plants.

Prevent: Scout early, before the damage reaches the part of the plant you care about. Start with clean planting stock, keep plants well watered since drought-stressed plants suffer worst, avoid heavy nitrogen, clear weedy hosts nearby, and hang blue or yellow sticky traps to catch the first arrivals. Reflective mulch deters them, and predatory mites, lacewings and minute pirate bugs do real work outdoors.

Treat: A strong water spray dislodges light infestations, and on a plant that can take it a hard shear and clean regrowth clears them outright. For heavier pressure use insecticidal soap, neem or spinosad, aimed down into the leaf sheaths and buds where thrips actually shelter, and repeat at intervals since eggs and pupae escape a single spray. Spinosad is a registered insecticide: use only a product labeled for the crop you are treating, follow the label exactly, and observe its pre-harvest interval.

The feeding damage is usually minor, but thrips vector tomato spotted wilt virus in peanut, which can be serious - watch for them on young plants, where early control actually matters.

Grow

Direct sow raw peanuts in their skins into warm, loose, sandy soil after frost; inoculate in new ground and skip nitrogen.

Peanuts are direct-sown — they don't transplant well — using raw, unroasted seed still in the papery red skin (shelled or in-shell). Wait until the soil is warm (65°F, usually 1-3 weeks after last frost), then plant 1-2 inches deep and 6-12 inches apart depending on type (bunch types closer, spreading runners wider), in full sun. Loose, sandy, well-drained soil is important: the pegs need to push into it later, and heavy clay makes both pegging and harvest hard.

Because peanut is a legume, don't feed it nitrogen — it fixes its own from the air. In ground that hasn't grown peanuts before, coat the seed with a peanut/cowpea rhizobia inoculant so it can. A little phosphorus and potassium, and calcium (gypsum) for good kernel fill, is all the feeding it wants. Then keep the soil loose and weed-free, especially as flowering approaches.

Peanut care revolves around one unusual event: pegging. After the small yellow flowers self-pollinate low on the plant, each fertilized stalk elongates downward and pushes into the soil to form a pod underground. Your job is to make that easy — keep the top few inches of soil loose, friable, and evenly moist so the pegs can enter, and gently hill loose soil around the plant base. Once flowering starts, stop deep hoeing and weeding near the plants, which would snap the descending pegs.

Otherwise peanuts are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, but yield much better with steady moisture through flowering and pod fill. Skip nitrogen fertilizer entirely (it grows tops at the pods' expense), water consistently, and ease off in the final couple of weeks so the plants dry down for harvest. Watch for leaf spot in humid weather, since heavy defoliation weakens the pegs and can cost you pods.

Harvest

Dig the whole plant when leaves yellow and pods are filled, then cure it like garlic - dry on the plant, then dry the pods.

Because the crop is invisible underground, judging harvest takes a test dig: peanuts are ready when the foliage yellows (around 120-150 days) and lifted pods show plump kernels with well-colored skins and a darkened, veined inner shell. Harvest before a hard frost, which damages the pods. On a dry day, fork under the plant to loosen the soil, then pull the entire plant — pods and all — and shake off the dirt. Sift the loosened soil for any pods that detached.

Then cure, essentially the same way you'd cure garlic. First, hang or rack the whole plants (pods still attached) in a warm, dry, airy, shaded place for one to two weeks to dry down. Then strip the pods off and cure them another week or two until the shells are papery and the kernels rattle inside. Thorough drying isn't just for storage — it prevents the Aspergillus mold that produces toxic aflatoxin, so don't rush it or store damp peanuts.

Storage

Fully dried, peanuts keep for months in the shell in a cool dry place, or far longer refrigerated or frozen; dampness means mold.

Once properly cured and fully dry, peanuts store well. Keep them in the shell in a breathable container somewhere cool and dry, where they hold for a few months; shelled kernels go rancid faster because of their oil, so shell only what you'll use soon. For longer storage, the fridge (about 6 months) or freezer (a year or more) keeps the oils from turning — peanuts freeze excellently, shelled or not.

The one serious rule is moisture: damp or poorly dried peanuts can grow Aspergillus mold, which produces aflatoxin, a genuine toxin. Discard any peanuts that smell rancid or musty, look moldy, or feel soft. Growing across climates

A long-warm-season Southern crop: hot zones grow any type; cool-summer gardens must force short-season Spanish and Valencia types.

Zones 3-4: honestly, no — peanut wants 120+ warm days and soil that holds 65°F, and a zone 3-4 garden has only about 105-120 frost-free days, so even a 90-day Valencia runs out of season once you subtract the wait for warm ground. There is no planting window here for that reason; a movable container in the warmest spot you have is the only realistic experiment. Zone 5: marginal but possible — use the fastest Spanish or Valencia types (90-110 days), warm the soil with black plastic, sow only once the ground is truly warm, and expect a modest novelty crop. Zones 6-7: workable with early and mid types; a warm summer will finish them. Zones 8-9: peanut country — the long, hot season easily ripens big Virginia and Runner types, and the sandy soils of the Southeast are ideal for pegging. Zones 10-13: excellent given loose soil; the heat is no obstacle and you can plant across a wide window. Everywhere, the two non-negotiables are heat and loose, sandy soil for the pegs to enter.

Troubleshooting

No pods but healthy tops means pegs couldn't enter the soil (or too much nitrogen); yellow leaves may mean missing inoculant.

Lush plants but few or no pods: pegs couldn't penetrate hard, dry, or crusted soil — keep the ground loose and moist during pegging; or too much nitrogen grew tops at the pods' expense. Yellow, weak plants in new ground: no nitrogen-fixing rhizobia present — inoculate the seed next time (or side-dress lightly this once). Peanuts are among the most nutrient- and energy-dense foods you can grow: about a quarter protein by weight, with plenty of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, plus standout amounts of niacin, folate, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. They even contain resveratrol, the antioxidant famous from red wine. As a legume, peanut protein complements grains, which is the nutritional logic behind pairings like peanuts and rice across many cuisines.

Two honest notes. First, the allergy: peanut is one of the most significant food allergens, and reactions can be severe — a real consideration for anyone growing, handling, or sharing them. Second, the calories: peanuts are dense (roughly 160 calories per ounce), so they're satisfying and sustaining but easy to overeat. For the vast majority, though, they're an excellent, affordable, storable source of plant protein and good fats — and few crops give more nutrition per square foot.

Set aside a portion of your best, fully mature, well-cured pods from your healthiest plants, keep them raw and unshelled in a cool, dry place over winter, and shell them just before planting next spring, sowing the kernels in their papery red skins. Choose plump, well-filled pods for the strongest seed. Peanut seed stays viable only 1-2 years, so save fresh each season.

Two keys to success: never use roasted or salted peanuts (heat kills the germ), and in ground that hasn't grown peanuts, treat the seed with a legume inoculant (peanut/cowpea group rhizobia) so the plants can fix nitrogen. The honest cautions are the flip side of that density: the peanut allergy is serious and, for some, life-threatening, and improperly stored peanuts can harbor aflatoxin. The peanut was domesticated in South America — the lowlands of Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil — thousands of years ago, and ancient Andean cultures prized it enough to bury peanuts with their dead and depict them in pottery. Spanish and Portuguese traders carried it across the globe after 1500, and it took especially deep root in West Africa and Asia. It returned to North America largely through the transatlantic slave trade, and the names 'goober' and 'pindar' come from the Kikongo and Kimbundu languages of Central Africa.

For a long time peanuts were considered poor people's food and livestock feed in the United States. That changed with George Washington Carver, who in the early 1900s championed peanuts as a nitrogen-fixing rotation crop to restore Southern soils exhausted by cotton, and developed hundreds of uses to build demand. His work helped make the peanut a major American crop — a story of a humble legume that quietly rebuilds soil and feeds people, from ancient Peru to the modern PB&J.
