Watch out for

The most important peanut disease: fungal early and late leaf spot (Cercospora/Cercosporidium) causing small dark spots that spread and defoliate the plant, cutting yield as the weakened plant drops pods.

Watch for: Small circular dark-brown spots (often ringed with a yellow halo) on leaflets, spreading upward, followed by heavy leaf drop.

Prevent: Rotate away from peanuts for 2-3 years, space for airflow, water at the base not overhead, remove crop debris, and grow tolerant varieties.

Treat: Remove badly affected debris; protectant fungicides (chlorothalonil, copper) on a schedule where pressure is high; keep foliage dry.

Defoliation late in the season is the real cost - it weakens the pegs so mature pods drop off in the soil and are lost at harvest.

Prevent: Gather ripe nuts promptly and often to beat them; trunk baffles slow (but rarely stop) climbers on isolated trees; keep the canopy clear of jumping routes from nearby trees and roofs.

Treat: There's no easy fix on a large tree - frequent gathering is the realistic defense, plus accepting that squirrels take a share. Black walnuts' hard shells slow them a little.

The buried, protein-rich pods are a magnet for foragers, especially as the plants dry down and signal ripeness.

The same sandy, warm soils that suit peanut also favor these nematodes, so rotation is doubly important.

Watch for: Silvery streaks and flecks on petals and leaves, distorted or discolored flowers, tiny slivers moving when you blow on a bloom.

Prevent: Keep plants healthy and watered; encourage predatory mites and lacewings; blue sticky traps help monitor.

Treat: Insecticidal soap or spinosad for heavy infestations; often thrips simply arrive with the heat that's ending the season anyway.

The feeding damage is usually minor, but thrips vector tomato spotted wilt virus in peanut, which can be serious - watch them on young plants.

Prevent: Grow resistant varieties, give good airflow and spacing, rotate, and avoid overhead watering; rust arrives on wind late in the season.

Treat: Fungicides used for leaf spot also help rust; remove worst-affected foliage and harvest promptly if defoliation sets in.

Usually shows up late and often travels with leaf spot; together they're the main defoliation threat in humid regions.

A hot-weather soil fungus (Sclerotium rolfsii) that attacks the stem at the soil line, collapsing plants; recognizable by white fan-like fungal growth and tan mustard-seed-sized sclerotia at the base.

Watch for: Sudden wilting of individual plants, white fungal fans on the lower stem and surrounding soil, and tiny round tan-to-brown sclerotia at the base in hot, humid weather.

Prevent: Rotate away from susceptible crops, improve drainage, bury or remove debris, avoid deep mulch piled against stems, and don't crowd plants.

Treat: Remove and destroy affected plants along with the surrounding soil crust; the sclerotia persist, so rotation and sanitation are the long game.

A wide-host-range fungus (it also hits tomatoes, beans, and many vegetables), which is why peanuts shouldn't follow susceptible crops.

Grow

Direct sow raw peanuts in their skins into warm, loose, sandy soil after frost; inoculate in new ground and skip nitrogen.

Peanuts are direct-sown — they don't transplant well — using raw, unroasted seed still in the papery red skin (shelled or in-shell). Wait until the soil is warm (65°F, usually 1-3 weeks after last frost), then plant 1-2 inches deep and 6-12 inches apart depending on type (bunch types closer, spreading runners wider), in full sun. Loose, sandy, well-drained soil is important: the pegs need to push into it later, and heavy clay makes both pegging and harvest hard.

Because peanut is a legume, don't feed it nitrogen — it fixes its own from the air. In ground that hasn't grown peanuts before, coat the seed with a peanut/cowpea rhizobia inoculant so it can. A little phosphorus and potassium, and calcium (gypsum) for good kernel fill, is all the feeding it wants. Then keep the soil loose and weed-free, especially as flowering approaches.

Care

Keep soil loose and moist for pegging, stop disturbing it once flowers appear, and let the plant fix its own nitrogen.

Peanut care revolves around one unusual event: pegging. After the small yellow flowers self-pollinate low on the plant, each fertilized stalk elongates downward and pushes into the soil to form a pod underground. Your job is to make that easy — keep the top few inches of soil loose, friable, and evenly moist so the pegs can enter, and gently hill loose soil around the plant base. Once flowering starts, stop deep hoeing and weeding near the plants, which would snap the descending pegs.

Otherwise peanuts are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant, but yield much better with steady moisture through flowering and pod fill. Skip nitrogen fertilizer entirely (it grows tops at the pods' expense), water consistently, and ease off in the final couple of weeks so the plants dry down for harvest. Watch for leaf spot in humid weather, since heavy defoliation weakens the pegs and can cost you pods.

Harvest

Dig the whole plant when leaves yellow and pods are filled, then cure it like garlic - dry on the plant, then dry the pods.

Because the crop is invisible underground, judging harvest takes a test dig: peanuts are ready when the foliage yellows (around 120-150 days) and lifted pods show plump kernels with well-colored skins and a darkened, veined inner shell. Harvest before a hard frost, which damages the pods. On a dry day, fork under the plant to loosen the soil, then pull the entire plant — pods and all — and shake off the dirt. Sift the loosened soil for any pods that detached.

Then cure, essentially the same way you'd cure garlic. First, hang or rack the whole plants (pods still attached) in a warm, dry, airy, shaded place for one to two weeks to dry down. Then strip the pods off and cure them another week or two until the shells are papery and the kernels rattle inside. Thorough drying isn't just for storage — it prevents the Aspergillus mold that produces toxic aflatoxin, so don't rush it or store damp peanuts.

Storage

Fully dried, peanuts keep for months in the shell in a cool dry place, or far longer refrigerated or frozen; dampness means mold.

Once properly cured and fully dry, peanuts store well. Keep them in the shell in a breathable container somewhere cool and dry, where they hold for a few months; shelled kernels go rancid faster because of their oil, so shell only what you'll use soon. For longer storage, the fridge (about 6 months) or freezer (a year or more) keeps the oils from turning — peanuts freeze excellently, shelled or not.

The one serious rule is moisture: damp or poorly dried peanuts can grow Aspergillus mold, which produces aflatoxin, a genuine toxin. Discard any peanuts that smell rancid or musty, look moldy, or feel soft. Beyond fresh eating, home-grown peanuts roast (dry or in-shell), boil green (freshly dug Valencia types make classic Southern boiled peanuts), press into peanut butter, or render oil — and the plants make good compost and forage.

Growing across climates

A long-warm-season Southern crop: hot zones grow any type; cool-summer gardens must force short-season Spanish and Valencia types.

Zones 3-5: a real stretch — peanut wants 120+ warm days, so pick the fastest Spanish or Valencia types (90-110 days), warm the soil with black plastic, start after the ground is truly warm, and expect a modest novelty crop. Zones 6-7: workable with early and mid types; a warm summer will finish them. Zones 8-9: peanut country — the long, hot season easily ripens big Virginia and Runner types, and the sandy soils of the Southeast are ideal for pegging. Zones 10-13: excellent given loose soil; the heat is no obstacle and you can plant across a wide window. Everywhere, the two non-negotiables are heat and loose, sandy soil for the pegs to enter.

Troubleshooting

No pods but healthy tops means pegs couldn't enter the soil (or too much nitrogen); yellow leaves may mean missing inoculant.

Lush plants but few or no pods: pegs couldn't penetrate hard, dry, or crusted soil — keep the ground loose and moist during pegging; or too much nitrogen grew tops at the pods' expense. Yellow, weak plants in new ground: no nitrogen-fixing rhizobia present — inoculate the seed next time (or side-dress lightly this once). Small dark spots spreading on leaves, heavy leaf drop (leaf spot): the main peanut disease — space for airflow, water at the base, rotate, and remove debris. White fungal mat and sudden wilt at the stem base (southern blight): remove affected plants, improve drainage, rotate away from susceptible crops. Empty or 'pops' (unfilled shells): calcium shortage during pod fill — add gypsum; also poor pollination in extreme heat. Pods rot or mold after harvest: insufficient curing — dry longer and store only bone-dry nuts.

Peanuts are among the most nutrient- and energy-dense foods you can grow: about a quarter protein by weight, with plenty of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, plus standout amounts of niacin, folate, vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. They even contain resveratrol, the antioxidant famous from red wine. As a legume, peanut protein complements grains, which is the nutritional logic behind pairings like peanuts and rice across many cuisines.

Two honest notes. First, the allergy: peanut is one of the most significant food allergens, and reactions can be severe — a real consideration for anyone growing, handling, or sharing them. Second, the calories: peanuts are dense (roughly 160 calories per ounce), so they're satisfying and sustaining but easy to overeat. For the vast majority, though, they're an excellent, affordable, storable source of plant protein and good fats — and few crops give more nutrition per square foot.

Propagation & seed saving

Every peanut is a seed: save your best fully-cured raw kernels in their skins and replant them next spring.

Seed-saving peanuts couldn't be simpler in principle: the peanut is the seed. Set aside a portion of your best, fully mature, well-cured pods from your healthiest plants, keep them raw and unshelled in a cool, dry place over winter, and shell them just before planting next spring, sowing the kernels in their papery red skins. Choose plump, well-filled pods for the strongest seed. Peanut seed stays viable only 1-2 years, so save fresh each season.

Two keys to success: never use roasted or salted peanuts (heat kills the germ), and in ground that hasn't grown peanuts, treat the seed with a legume inoculant (peanut/cowpea group rhizobia) so the plants can fix nitrogen. Because peanuts are self-pollinating, saved seed comes true to type with no isolation needed — one season's crop reliably funds the next, and a handful of pods replants a whole row.

Not an herbal medicine, but a genuinely functional food - and the source of George Washington Carver's agricultural revolution.

Peanuts have little standing as herbal medicine, but they're a meaningful functional food: their protein, healthy fats, niacin, folate, vitamin E, magnesium, and resveratrol make regular moderate peanut eating part of well-studied heart-healthy dietary patterns, and peanut-based therapeutic foods (like the paste RUTF) are a frontline treatment for severe childhood malnutrition worldwide. As a nutrient-dense, shelf-stable, affordable protein, the peanut does real public-health work.

The honest cautions are the flip side of that density: the peanut allergy is serious and, for some, life-threatening, and improperly stored peanuts can harbor aflatoxin. Historically, the peanut's greatest 'medicine' was agricultural — George Washington Carver promoted it across the depleted cotton South precisely because, as a nitrogen-fixing legume, it rebuilt worn-out soils while feeding people. Treat peanuts as excellent, protein-rich food (minding allergies and dryness), not as a remedy.

History

The peanut was domesticated in South America — the lowlands of Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil — thousands of years ago, and ancient Andean cultures prized it enough to bury peanuts with their dead and depict them in pottery.
