Olive
Raw olives are bitter and inedible until cured - that is oleuropein, not a poison. Home curing is low-acid food preservation with a real botulism risk: finished olives must be acidified and refrigerated, never kept at room temperature, and you should follow a university extension procedure. Olive pollen is also a major airborne allergen, and a few desert-Southwest jurisdictions (Pima County AZ, Clark County NV) restrict selling or planting olive trees - check your local ordinance.
Overview
An ancient, drought-hardy, incredibly long-lived evergreen for Mediterranean climates (zones 8-10) - grown for table olives and oil, or as a silvery ornamental. The catches: raw olives must be cured to be edible, and the tree needs a cool-but-not-freezing winter to fruit.
The olive is one of humanity's oldest and longest-lived trees - individual olives live for centuries, some for over a thousand years, and a tree you plant may outlive several generations of your family. It's a silvery, drought-tough, heat-loving evergreen that thrives on neglect once established, tolerates poor and rocky soil, and doubles as a beautiful ornamental and evergreen screen even where it won't fruit. Where the climate suits it, it gives you two of the great foods of civilization: cured table olives and pressed olive oil.
Two facts govern growing it. First, the climate: olives are a Mediterranean crop - they need long, hot, dry summers to ripen fruit and a cool (but not hard-freezing) winter to set flower buds, which lands them in zones 8-10, with container culture the workaround elsewhere. They're frost-tender (damaged below about 15°F), yet paradoxically require some winter chill to fruit, so both too-cold and too-warm winters are a problem. Second, and this surprises everyone: a raw olive is inedibly bitter - you cannot eat one off the tree. Every table olive must be cured over days to months to leach out the bitter compound oleuropein — brining and water-curing are the home methods, while lye-curing is the fast commercial one and a caustic-chemical procedure, so read the Storage section before attempting it. Understand the climate and the curing, and the olive is a nearly immortal, low-maintenance tree of extraordinary reward.

Olive Fruit Fly High
Bactrocera oleae is the defining pest of olive fruit. The female stings a green or ripening olive and lays a single egg under the skin; the maggot then tunnels through the flesh, opening the fruit to rot and driving up the acidity of any oil pressed from it. It has been established statewide in California since 1998 and is effectively unavoidable there without active management - unmanaged backyard fruit is commonly 100% infested.
Watch for: A small brown or purplish dimple (the egg-laying sting) on otherwise perfect fruit, sometimes with a tiny exit hole later. Damage is nearly invisible from outside, so cut a sample of fruit open through the summer and look for creamy maggots and brown tunnels in the flesh.
Prevent: Hang yellow sticky traps or protein-bait traps from midsummer so you know when flies arrive; apply spinosad protein-bait sprays (GF-120) on the recommended schedule once they do; pick up and destroy every dropped and mummified olive, since sanitation is the single biggest lever on a home tree; harvest promptly instead of leaving fruit hanging; or bag or net a small tree.
Treat: There is no rescue once the maggot is inside - infested olives cannot be salvaged for the table. Strip and destroy the remaining fruit (bag it or bury it deeply; do not compost it) to break the cycle for next year, and start trapping and baiting earlier the following season.
In infested regions unmanaged fruit is usually unusable for table olives, though lightly stung fruit may still press acceptably if it is milled within a day or two, before the damage sours the oil.
Scale & Sooty Mold Medium
Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.
Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.
Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.
Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.
Black scale is one of the classic olive pests, and the honeydew-and-sooty-mold combination is the tell. It is worse on shaded, crowded, unpruned trees, so pruning for airflow and light matters as much as spraying - and control ants, which protect the scale from its predators.
Verticillium Wilt Medium
A soil fungus (Verticillium dahliae and relatives) that enters through the roots and grows upward inside the water-conducting tissue, plugging it from within. The plant is not being eaten or rotted, it is being cut off from its own water supply, which is why the signature symptom is one branch or one side wilting and browning while the rest looks perfectly healthy. Cut into affected wood or stem and the tissue is streaked olive-green, grey or brown. The host range is enormous - maples, redbud, olive, tomato, potato, pepper, eggplant, strawberry and many more - and the fungus survives in soil for years as tough resting structures, so infected ground stays infected. Grasses and conifers do not get it.
Watch for: One branch, one limb or one side of a plant wilting, yellowing and browning in summer while the rest carries on normally - the lopsided pattern is the tell - and leaves that wilt and then hang on rather than dropping cleanly. Cut into affected wood and look for olive-green, grey or brown streaking along the grain; in a cut vegetable stem it shows as a ring of discolored dots. On vegetables, lower leaves yellow in a wedge from the margin inward, and the plant wilts at midday but recovers overnight in the early stages.
Prevent: There is no way to sterilize garden soil of it, so prevention is plant choice and plant vigor. Do not replant a susceptible species where one has already died of it. Grasses, conifers, ginkgo, hawthorn, hornbeam, honeylocust, oak and beech do not get it, and many vegetable varieties carry bred-in resistance - the V in a VFN code on the seed packet. Rotate susceptible vegetables on a long cycle and keep them off ground where the disease has shown. Buy clean stock, avoid wounding roots with spades and machinery, and keep woody plants steadily watered, mulched and only lightly fed, because a vigorous plant walls the fungus off far better than a stressed one.
Treat: There is no cure and nothing to spray. On a tree or shrub the aim is to keep it alive long enough to compartmentalize the fungus, which many plants manage for years: prune out dead and wilting branches well below the discolored wood, sanitize the pruners between cuts, water deeply through dry spells, mulch, and feed lightly rather than pushing it with a heavy feed. On vegetables, pull and bin affected plants rather than composting them, and move that crop to clean ground or to containers of fresh mix. Do not replant the same species where one has died.
Tomato, cotton and other hosts build the fungus up in soil, so an olive planted where they grew is at risk - a key reason to site olives in well-drained ground with no verticillium history. Some cultivars are more tolerant than others, and the one-limb-at-a-time wilt is characteristic here.
Aphids Low
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Birds & Wildlife Low
Birds find ripening fruit and seed before you do. Robins, waxwings, starlings, catbirds, jays, sparrows, finches, blackbirds, and doves all work a garden, and the pressure arrives in a narrow window - the last days before harvest, when sugar rises, color changes, and the crop softens or the grain hardens. A flock can strip a small planting in a day or two, and birds that only peck rather than take whole fruit still leave wounds that rot or draw wasps. Squirrels, chipmunks, and other wildlife usually turn up on the same crop at the same time. This is competition rather than disease: the birds are not harming the plant, and a big tree or a heavy-cropping bush often has enough for everyone - but on a small planting it can be the difference between a harvest and none.
Watch for: Fruit disappearing from the outermost, most exposed parts of the plant first, and from the top of a tree where you cannot reach anyway. Single neat pecks and gouges in ripening fruit, with several fruits sampled rather than one eaten through - the classic sign that it was birds rather than an animal. Heads of grain or seed going visibly lighter and emptier as they ripen, with hulls and chaff scattered underneath. Freshly sown seed vanishing off the surface of a bed before it germinates. Bird traffic in and out of the plant picking up as the crop colors, and birds waiting on nearby wires and branches. Wasps arriving at the pecked and split fruit shortly afterward.
Prevent: Net, and net early. Bird netting draped over a frame or hoops so it stands off the fruit, with the edges closed at ground level, is the only thing that reliably works at harvest scale - and it has to go on before the crop starts to color, because once birds have found the food they are far harder to displace. Keep fruit trees small enough that netting them is actually feasible; that decision gets made years earlier, at planting. Bags of mesh, organza, or paper slipped over individual heads, clusters, or prize fruit protect a small crop without netting the whole plant. Then shorten the exposure: pick promptly and completely rather than leaving ripe fruit hanging as a lure, clear split and dropped fruit that draws birds and wasps alike, and where a crop can finish off the plant, harvest a little early and ripen or dry it under cover. Rake in or cover broadcast seed so it is not lying in plain view.
Treat: There is no treatment once a crop is being taken - only protection and timing, so the answer is to get netting on and to pick what is ready. Reflective tape, flash ribbon, spinners, and decoy predators do work, but only for a few days at a time: birds habituate fast, so move and rotate them and never rely on them as the main defense for a crop you care about. Cut and gather grain or seed heads a little early, at firm dough, and finish drying them under cover instead of leaving them standing for the flocks. Plant a little extra, or a decoy crop the birds prefer, and accept sharing anything that crops heavily. On a wild or foraged patch, fruit going to birds and small mammals is the point of the plant rather than a problem to solve.

Established olive care is genuinely minimal - the tree earned its reputation on neglect. Water regularly for the first year or two to establish roots, then taper off; a mature olive is deeply drought-tolerant, though moderate summer water sizes table olives and steadies cropping. Feed lightly if at all; olives fruit fine on poor soil, and excess nitrogen just pushes leafy suckers. Prune in late winter to open the canopy to light and air - olives fruit on last year's wood at the canopy's edge, so a light annual thinning keeps fruiting wood exposed. Expect and manage alternate bearing (a heavy crop one year, little the next): thinning a heavy set and consistent care evens it out somewhat.
Pest and disease pressure is modest but real. Olive fruit fly is the major fruit pest where it occurs (its maggots ruin table olives and taint oil) - manage with traps, sanitation of dropped fruit, and prompt harvest, plus targeted controls where pressure is high. Scale insects cluster on twigs and drip honeydew that grows sooty mold (horticultural oil and beneficials handle them), and in humid climates the fungal peacock spot (olive leaf spot) and verticillium wilt can appear - airflow, sanitation, and well-drained soil are the defenses. In a dry Mediterranean climate, though, an established olive mostly just grows.
Harvest
Ripeness is a choice: pick green for firm table olives, black-ripe for soft olives and the richest oil. Strip them into nets - and remember every one must be cured before eating; raw olives are inedibly bitter.
With olives, when you harvest is a decision about what you're making, not just about ripeness. Pick them green (full-sized but still hard and unripe) for firm, mild green table olives; let them ripen to purple-black and soften on the tree for black table olives and for the fruitiest, most abundant oil (oil content rises as the fruit darkens). Many growers harvest for oil at the color-turn (green to purple) for a balance of yield and flavor. To harvest, hand-strip or rake the fruit from the branches onto nets spread below the tree - a productive mature tree can drop many pounds.
Then comes the step every first-timer learns the hard way: a fresh olive is inedibly, mouth-puckeringly bitter and cannot be eaten off the tree. The bitterness is the compound oleuropein, and every table olive must be cured to remove it - water-cured (weeks of changed water), brine-cured (weeks to months in salt brine, the traditional method), or lye-cured (fast, days — the commercial method, and a caustic-chemical procedure needing goggles, gloves, non-reactive containers, and rinsing until the olives are fully neutralized; see Storage) - before it becomes the salty, savory olive you know. Olives destined for oil skip curing entirely: they're crushed and pressed, and the bitterness stays in the pomace, not the oil. Plan your harvest color and quantity around whether you're curing table olives or pressing oil.
Storage
Cured olives are a low-acid food. You don't store raw olives - you cure them, and finished olives keep several months to a year only in fresh brine IN THE REFRIGERATOR; they are shelf-stable at room temperature only if the brine is both salted and acidified to pH 4.6 or below. Improperly cured olives have caused botulism. Pressed oil keeps a year or two cool and dark.
For olives, curing IS storage. A fresh olive won't keep raw and isn't edible raw anyway, so the traditional preservation method - brining or salting - is the same process that makes it edible. Brine-cured olives (the classic home method) sit in a salt brine for weeks to months to leach the bitterness and ferment slightly; once cured, they keep for many months in the refrigerator submerged in fresh brine. Lye-curing is much faster, but treat it as an advanced procedure rather than a casual one: food-grade lye (sodium hydroxide) burns skin and blinds on splash, so goggles and gloves are mandatory; use only glass, stainless, or food-grade plastic vessels (never aluminum, galvanized metal, cast iron, or tin, which react with it); always add the lye to the water, never water to lye; and keep the bucket away from children and pets. Check that the lye has penetrated to the pit, then soak the olives through repeated changes of fresh water until they are fully neutralized — incompletely rinsed olives stay caustic and have burned people's mouths and throats. Follow a published extension procedure step by step rather than improvising.
Cured olives are a low-acid food, and this is where home olive curing goes wrong. Salt alone is not a sufficient hurdle, and neither is time. To hold olives outside the refrigerator, the finishing brine needs both a real salt concentration (roughly 5-10%, about 1 lb pickling salt per gallon) and acidification with vinegar or citric acid to bring it to pH 4.6 or below — otherwise they belong in the fridge and should be eaten within weeks, not stored in a cellar. Treat water-cured olives with particular care: water curing gives them neither a salt hurdle nor an acid one, which makes them the closest match to the batches that have actually poisoned people — finish them in an acidified brine and refrigerate them, full stop. Dry-salt-cured olives are a separate case and should not be folded into the acid rule: packed in dry salt, they are preserved by pulling water out of the fruit rather than by pH, so keep them dry and heavily salted, and refrigerate and eat within weeks once you rehydrate them or pack them in oil. Adding garlic, herbs or citrus to a jar adds low-acid material and shortens its safe life further — flavor at serving time instead. Improperly preserved home-cured olives have caused botulism outbreaks; this is a documented hazard, not a theoretical one, and contaminated brine looks, smells and tastes completely normal, so there is no sensory test to fall back on. The other product, olive oil, is its own storage triumph - freshly pressed oil, kept in a cool, dark place in a sealed container away from light and heat, holds its quality for a year or more (extra-virgin oil is best used within a year of pressing for peak flavor). Both products turn a fall harvest into a year-round pantry staple, which is exactly why the olive underpinned Mediterranean civilization: a tree that hands you a food and a fat that both keep for a year is a genuine food-security crop. Just remember the sequence - harvest, then cure or press; you never store the raw fruit.
Growing across climates
Zones 8-10 with hot dry summers and cool mild winters are the sweet spot. Frost-tender below ~15°F but needs winter cool to fruit. Too warm/humid = no fruit; too cold = frost death. North of the range, grow a dwarf in a container.
The olive is the definitive Mediterranean-climate crop, and its climate needs pull in two directions at once. Zones 9-10 (Mediterranean-type climates - much of California, and comparable dry-summer regions): ideal - long, hot, dry summers ripen the fruit and press good oil, and mild winters bring the necessary cool without hard freezes; this is olive heartland. Zone 8 and cold edges: possible with cold-hardier cultivars (Arbequina, Mission, Frantoio, Leccino), planted in a warm, sheltered, south-facing microclimate and protected as young trees - but a freeze below about 15°F damages wood, and much below that can kill even mature trees, so the tree defines the cold edge. The paradox: olives also need a cool winter (roughly 200-400 hours below ~45°F plus a run of cool days) to set flower buds, so in too-warm, frost-free tropical or humid climates (parts of zone 10-11, Florida, the humid tropics) the tree grows lush and green but often won't fruit, and humidity brings leaf and fruit diseases. Colder than zone 8: grow a compact olive in a large container, summer it outdoors in full sun, and overwinter it in a cool, bright, frost-free space (an unheated sunroom or garage) - it stays evergreen and needs a cool rest, not a warm one. Container culture is the honest answer beyond the in-ground range, not a fake cold-zone planting window.
One regional footnote for the dry Southwest: olives are wind-pollinated and shed copious airborne pollen, which matters in allergy-prone households and is why a few desert jurisdictions regulate the tree — Pima County, Arizona (Tucson) has banned the sale and planting of European olive since 1984, and Clark County, Nevada (Las Vegas) since 1991. Only low-pollen fruitless cultivars such as 'Swan Hill' and 'Wilson's Fruitless' are permitted there, and those bear no crop, so check the local ordinance before buying. Olive has also naturalized in parts of southern California and the Central Valley, where Cal-IPC rates it 'Limited' — its lowest impact tier.
Troubleshooting
No fruit despite a healthy tree usually means too-warm winter (no chill), no pollen partner, or too young. Bitter uncured olives are normal - cure them. Maggoty fruit is olive fruit fly. Frost-damaged wood in cold-edge zones is common; olives resprout.

Maggots or soft spots in the fruit found when you cut it open: olive fruit fly - trap, sanitize dropped fruit, and harvest promptly; heavy infestation ruins table olives and taints oil. Sticky honeydew and black sooty mold on twigs: scale insects - horticultural oil and beneficials. Dark spots with yellow halos ('peacock spots') on leaves, with leaf drop: the fungal olive leaf spot, worst in wet/humid conditions - improve airflow and drainage. Blackened, killed twigs after a hard winter: frost damage below ~15°F - prune out dead wood in spring; established trees usually resprout.

Olives and olive oil are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fat (oleic acid) and distinctive polyphenol antioxidants - the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, one of the best-evidenced eating patterns in nutrition science. Cured table olives are also high in sodium.
The olive is a nutritional heavyweight, and unusually, the evidence behind it is strong. Both the fruit and its oil are dominated by monounsaturated fat (chiefly oleic acid), the 'good' fat associated with better cardiovascular health, plus distinctive polyphenol antioxidants - oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal - that have real anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity (oleocanthal, the compound behind good olive oil's peppery throat-catch, has even shown ibuprofen-like anti-inflammatory effects in the lab). Olives and their oil are the fat foundation of the Mediterranean diet, one of the most robustly studied dietary patterns in all of nutrition, repeatedly linked to lower rates of heart disease.
Whole cured olives add fiber, vitamin E, iron, copper, and those polyphenols - genuinely good food. The olive gives the kitchen two irreplaceable ingredients. Cured table olives - once brined, water-, or lye-cured to remove the bitterness - are eaten as snacks and appetizers, chopped into tapenade, baked into breads and focaccia, simmered into Mediterranean and North African stews and tagines, tossed with pasta (puttanesca), and scattered on pizza and salads. Green olives are firmer and sharper; black-ripe olives are softer and mellower; and cultivars carry distinct flavors - buttery Castelvetrano, rich purple Kalamata, small tangy Niçoise. Home-cured olives take flavorings beautifully — garlic, citrus peel, rosemary, fennel, chili — with one condition attached: raw garlic and fresh herbs dropped into a brine make an anaerobic, low-acid jar, so a flavored batch has to be refrigerated and eaten within a few weeks and never held at cellar or room temperature. Flavoring in the serving bowl rather than the storage jar sidesteps the problem entirely.

Freshly pressed oil from your own tree is a revelation compared to supermarket oil. The one rule that governs all of it: you must cure or press first. A raw olive is inedibly bitter - it is not a fruit you eat off the tree like a plum. Plan whether you're making table olives (harvest green or black, then cure) or oil (harvest at the color-turn or black, then press), and the tree feeds you both ways.
Propagation & seed saving
Olives root readily from cuttings - the standard way to clone a cultivar true (no grafting needed) - and old trees are propagated from the woody basal knots called ovuli. Seeds sprout but won't come true and take many years.
Olives are propagated almost entirely from cuttings, not seed, and pleasingly they root without grafting - a semi-hardwood cutting taken in summer (or a hardwood cutting in dormancy), treated with rooting hormone and kept warm and humid, roots to make a new tree that's genetically identical to the parent cultivar. This is how every named olive variety is reproduced, and it means a great local tree can become your tree for free. Because olives grow slowly, cutting-grown trees take a few years to size up and several to fruit, but they carry the exact variety you want.
Traditionally, olives are also propagated from ovuli (or 'uovoli') - the woody, burl-like knots that form at the base of the trunk - which are cut off and rooted, a method that has cloned prized olive trees for millennia. You can grow an olive from a pit (it needs scarifying and patience), but seedlings won't come true to the parent, are a genetic lottery, and take many years to fruit - so seed is for the curious, not for reproducing a cultivar. Given how readily cuttings root, the cutting is the practical route: master it and you never have to buy that olive variety again, and you'll be using the same technique that has propagated olives since antiquity.

History
