A nectarine is simply a fuzzless peach - same tree, same culture, same self-fruitful ease - but the smooth skin makes it noticeably more prone to brown rot, peach leaf curl, and insect and bird damage. Grow it like a peach, but stay a step more diligent.

Here's the fact that clears up all confusion: a nectarine is a peach - genetically the same species (Prunus persica), differing by a single recessive gene that makes the skin smooth instead of fuzzy. Peach trees have thrown nectarine sports for centuries, and a peach pit can even grow a nectarine tree (and vice versa). Everything about growing one - self-fruitful bloom (one tree, no partner), fast bearing (year two or three), hard annual pruning, open-vase shape, chill-hour matching, and the whole pest and disease lineup - is identical to peach culture. If you can grow a peach, you can grow a nectarine.

The one meaningful difference is that the smooth skin, which makes nectarines so appealing to eat, also makes them more vulnerable. Without the fuzz that shields a peach, nectarines are noticeably more susceptible to brown rot and peach leaf curl, and more attractive to insects and birds - so the same care regime needs a bit more vigilance, especially the dormant leaf-curl spray and brown-rot sanitation. Grow it exactly like a peach: a dormant grafted tree in full sun and sharply drained soil, a variety whose chill hours match your winter, trained to an open-center vase. One tree crops - nectarines are self-fruitful.

Buy a grafted tree and, above all, buy the right variety for your chill zone - this matters as much for nectarines as for peaches. A high-chill variety in a mild-winter area will barely leaf out; a low-chill variety up north will bloom in a warm spell and lose its flowers to frost. Your local extension office publishes recommended chill-hour ratings; start there. Only one tree is needed - nectarines are self-fruitful.

Judge ripeness exactly as you would a peach: ignore the red blush and look at the ground color (the yellow, orange, or cream background), which goes from green to fully colored as the fruit ripens. Add a strong sweet smell and a gentle 'give' when you press near the stem, and it should lift off with a light twist. A nectarine picked while still firm and green-shouldered will soften on the counter but never develop the sugar and juice of one ripened on the tree.

Storage

Ripe nectarines last only days - refrigerate briefly, then can, freeze, or dry the glut. Never fridge an underripe one; cold makes it mealy. No peeling needed, unlike fuzzy peaches.

Nectarines store just like peaches: firm ones ripen on the counter in a few days, ripe ones hold two to four days in the fridge. Zones 5-6: the northern edge - only semi-hardy and blooming early, so plant cold-hardy, late-blooming varieties (Hardired, Mericrest) on frost-safe high ground and accept the occasional frost-lost crop; nectarines are marginally less hardy than peaches. Zones 6-8: nectarine heartland - the widest choice of medium-chill varieties (Fantasia, Redgold, Sunglo), but humidity makes brown rot and leaf curl the main fight, and the fuzzless skin suffers more than a peach would, so choose the most resistant varieties (Mericrest, Hardired). Zones 9-10 and the mild-winter West: chill hours become the whole story - standard nectarines never accumulate enough cold, so plant true low-chill varieties (Panamint, Arctic Star, Snow Queen, Desert Delight, ~250-500 hours) bred for these winters. Troubleshooting

Puckered red spring leaves are leaf curl (worse on nectarines - a dormant-spray problem). Rotting smooth fruit is brown rot (also worse here). Small hard fruit means you didn't thin. Gumming at the trunk is borer. It's the peach playbook, run tighter.

Nutritionally a peach: low-calorie, hydrating, and a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium - with the antioxidants concentrated in and just under the smooth skin (which you can eat without peeling).

Because a nectarine is a peach, it carries essentially the same nutrition: about 85% water and 60-ish calories, with good vitamin C, vitamin A (as beta-carotene, concentrated in yellow-fleshed types), vitamin E, potassium, and fiber. The antioxidants - including the compounds that color red-blushed skin - sit largely in and just beneath the skin. Named nectarine varieties are propagated by grafting or budding onto rootstock (peach and nectarine share rootstocks), so a specific variety like Fantasia can only be reproduced that way. But nectarines share the peach's forgiving relationship with seed - and with a twist. Because the smooth-skin trait is a single recessive gene, a nectarine pit can grow a peach tree, and a peach pit can throw a nectarine, depending on the genetics; the classic old orchards are full of these surprises. Seed-grown Prunus persica trees are a genetic lottery, but they often make edible fruit and, like peaches, fruit fast - sometimes in three years.

To try it, save a pit from a great local nectarine (or peach), stratify it (moist, in the fridge, for 8-12 weeks of fake winter), then plant it out and see what you get. The honest, practical medicine note is a safety one: the fruit is wholesome and safe, but the kernel inside the pit and the leaves contain cyanogenic compounds - don't eat the kernel (the pseudoscientific 'laetrile' cancer claims attached to stone-fruit kernels are both unproven and genuinely dangerous), and don't brew the leaves. Enjoy the nectarine for what it plainly is: excellent summer food, identical in benefit to a peach with a smoother skin.

The nectarine's history is the peach's history, because it is a peach: the same fruit domesticated in China over 4,000 years ago, woven into Chinese culture as a symbol of immortality, and carried west along the Silk Road to Persia, where the Greeks and Romans met it and gave the species the mistaken name Prunus persica, 'Persian plum.' Smooth-skinned peaches - nectarines - have shown up as natural sports on peach trees for at least two thousand years; Roman and later European writers described fuzzless peaches long before anyone understood the single-gene cause. The name 'nectarine' entered English in the 1600s, from 'nectar,' the sweet drink of the Greek gods, in tribute to the fruit's flavor.

Because nectarines arise so readily from peaches (and vice versa), they've never had a separate agricultural story so much as a parallel one - spreading with peaches through the Mediterranean, to the Americas with Spanish colonists, and into the modern breeding programs (especially in California) that gave us today's large, firm, brightly colored varieties. Plant a nectarine and you're growing the peach's smooth-skinned twin: a fruit that has meant immortality in China, ridden the Silk Road, and been named for the nectar of the gods.
