Motherwort
A bitter medicinal herb, not a food. It is a uterine stimulant and must not be used in pregnancy. Seek advice first if you take cardiac glycosides (digoxin), sedatives, or blood thinners, or have a bleeding or thyroid condition; it can also skew thyroid tests. Large doses cause diarrhea, stomach upset, drowsiness and uterine bleeding. Handling can cause a rash, and photosensitivity is reported. The dried calyxes are sharply prickly - wear gloves to harvest.
Overview
A tough, bitter, unkillable medicinal perennial of the mint family whose name records both its traditional uses - 'mother' for menstrual and postpartum complaints, 'cardiaca' for an anxious, racing heart. Easy to the point of weediness, so deadhead it.
Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is one of the old European apothecary herbs, and its name tells you everything it was grown for. 'Mother' is for its long use in childbirth, postpartum recovery, and menstrual complaints; cardiaca is Latin for 'of the heart', and points at palpitations, a racing pulse, and the tight anxious feeling in the chest that goes with them. Very few plants carry their entire medicinal history in their name this plainly.
In the ground it is a coarse, upright, three-to-four-foot member of the mint family with one genuinely beautiful feature: the lower leaves are deeply palmate, cut into three to five pointed lobes like a small dark maple leaf, and they narrow as they climb the square stem until the top ones are little three-fingered blades. From midsummer the pale pink flowers sit in tight whorls in every leaf axil up the stem, and bumblebees work them for weeks.
Two things to know before you plant it. It self-seeds ferociously and has naturalized across most of North America, to the point that conservation groups in the upper Midwest list it among the plants invading woodlands and natural areas - so deadhead it, or grow it in a pot. And the little calyxes that hold the flowers are tipped with stiff spines that dry into rows of small burrs, so you harvest this plant in gloves and long sleeves. Both facts are easy to manage and neither is in most seed-packet descriptions.

Root Rot Medium
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.
The one thing that actually kills motherwort. It is hardy to around -40F but rots at the crown in ground that holds winter water, so a clump that fails to reappear in spring drowned rather than froze. Grow it high, lean and sharply drained, and never irrigate an established plant.
Powdery Mildew Medium
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
Predictable on the lower, oldest leaves of a crowded clump in late summer, and worse in humid zone 8-9 gardens. It matters little because the harvest comes at bloom, before the worst of it - cut the plant back hard after flowering and it regrows clean. Space clumps 18-24 inches and thin congested stems rather than reaching for a spray.
Aphids Low
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
Colonies gather on the soft spring shoot tips before the stems toughen up, and are usually gone by the time the plant flowers. A hard jet of water is all this ever needs on a plant this vigorous - do not spray a herb you intend to steep.
Slugs & Snails Low
Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.
Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.
Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.
Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.
Only a problem on first-year seedlings and fresh divisions in a wet spring; once the stems go stiff and bitter the plant is left entirely alone. Ironically the damage falls hardest on exactly the seedlings you were planning to weed out anyway.
Deer (browse resistance) Low
Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.
Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.
Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.
Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.
Listed as a non-problem, because it is genuinely useful to know: motherwort is bitter, hairy and prickly in the calyx, and deer and rabbits reliably leave it alone. It is one of the better choices for an unfenced medicinal bed in heavy-browse country, and browsing pressure on neighbouring plants is one more reason it outcompetes them.
Spider Mites Low
Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.
Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.
Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.
Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.
Occasional on plants baking against a hot wall in a dry summer, and on anything grown in a container that is allowed to dry out. Rare in the open ground, where motherwort's drought tolerance keeps it unstressed. Hose the foliage down, or shear the plant back and let it regrow clean.
Four-Lined Plant Bug Low
A fast-moving bright greenish-yellow bug about a quarter inch long, marked with four black stripes down its back, that feeds for a few weeks in late spring on the new growth of a very wide range of shrubs and herbaceous plants. It injects a toxin as it feeds, so each puncture leaves a small dark sunken spot that looks far more like a leaf-spot disease than insect damage - which is why it is so often misdiagnosed and sprayed with fungicide. There is a single generation a year: the adults are gone by midsummer, the eggs overwinter in slits cut into last year's stems, and the growth that follows the feeding is clean.
Watch for: Small round dark spots, roughly an eighth of an inch across, appearing in loose rows or patches on the newest leaves in late spring. Spots that later dry, turn pale, and drop out, leaving small holes - so the damage keeps changing appearance and looks like several different problems in succession. Bright yellow-green striped bugs, and their smaller bright red wingless nymphs, on the leaf undersides, dropping or running to the far side of the stem the instant you approach. Damage confined to the newest growth and stopping abruptly by midsummer.
Prevent: Very little is warranted, because the damage is cosmetic on established plants and the insect is present for only a few weeks. Cutting back and removing old stems in fall or early spring destroys the overwintering eggs, which are laid in slits in the previous season's wood, and that is the most useful single step. Keep plants growing vigorously so new leaves quickly outgrow the marked ones, and leave the beneficial insects alone.
Treat: On a shrub, do nothing - the bugs leave by midsummer and the following flush is clean. On a herb or perennial where the marked leaves are the point, insecticidal soap or a labelled pyrethrin reaches the nymphs if applied early and directly to the undersides, but the adults are so quick that sprays usually miss them, and the timing window is short. Pinching off the worst-marked leaves tidies things faster than spraying does. Do not treat this with a fungicide - it is not a disease, however much the spotting looks like one.
A classic mint-family pest that leaves neat round sunken dark spots on the upper leaves in early summer, often mistaken for a leaf-spot disease. It is cosmetic on a plant this coarse, the damage stops well before the bloom-time harvest, and no treatment is warranted.

There are effectively no named cultivars of motherwort. It has never been through ornamental or commercial breeding the way its mint-family cousins have, so seed and plants are sold simply as motherwort, common motherwort, or by the botanical name, and any variation you see between sources comes from growing conditions rather than genetics. What matters when buying is that the label says Leonurus cardiaca and not one of the other Leonurus species sold under the same English name.
More finely cut, deeply dissected leaves and showier pink-to-magenta flower whorls than European motherwort, on an annual or biennial plant.
A different species, not a variety of this plant, and the source of most of the confusion around motherwort. Yi mu cao is the traditional Chinese herb, an annual or biennial with brighter pink-purple flowers, used chiefly for gynaecological and obstetric complaints rather than for the heart. It contains leonurine, an alkaloid that has generally not been detected in Leonurus cardiaca at all, so research and dosing guidance for one does not transfer to the other. Grow it as a warm-season annual if you want it; nothing on this page about hardiness, dormancy or division applies.

Listed here only so you do not buy it by mistake. Lion's ear is a South African shrub in a different genus entirely, sold under names - lion's tail, lion's ear - that motherwort also carries, and it looks nothing like it once grown: a tender 4-6 ft plant with striking whorls of bright orange tubular flowers that hummingbirds love. It is a fine ornamental in zones 9-11, but it is not motherwort, has a different traditional use, and none of this page applies to it.

Another distinct species occasionally sold as motherwort, grown as a tender annual or biennial for its showier rose-pink flower whorls and finely divided foliage. It is naturalized and weedy in parts of the warm South and is treated as a garden thug in some places. Pretty and easy, but it is not the European medicinal herb and should not be substituted for it.
Grow
Chill the seed 2-4 weeks before sowing (or sow outdoors in autumn), then give it sun to part shade and poor, well-drained ground - rich soil makes a floppy plant that seeds even harder.
Almost every motherwort failure happens at the seed stage, and the fix is simple: the seed wants a cold, moist chill of 2-4 weeks before it will germinate properly. Mix it into barely damp sand in a sealed bag, refrigerate it for two to four weeks, then sow barely covered and keep it moist at around 65-70°F; sprouts follow in 10-14 days. The lazier and better route is to sow outdoors in autumn and let winter do the work - that is how the plant sows itself, and it works reliably. Untreated seed sown into a warm spring tray is the reason most packets disappoint.
After that it is about as demanding as a dandelion. It takes full sun through to part shade, tolerates dry, stony, compacted, poor ground, and shrugs off cold to around -40°F. The one soil rule is counterintuitive: do not improve the bed. Rich, manured, well-watered ground gives you a soft five-foot plant that flops over its neighbours and sets a colossal amount of seed, while lean ground gives a sturdy, self-supporting, more strongly aromatic herb. Space plants 18-24 inches apart, water through the first season to build the crown, and then leave them alone.
Because of the seeding habit, a large container is a genuinely good home for motherwort - it keeps the roots and the volunteers where you can see them, and the plant does not resent the restriction. If you are planting in the ground and live anywhere near woodland or a natural area, site it well away from the boundary.
Care
Essentially no care at all except one non-negotiable job: cut the flowers off before they set seed. Then shear the plant back after bloom and divide the clump every three or four years.
An established motherwort needs no water, no feeding, no staking in lean soil, and no winter protection. It dies to the ground after hard frost and returns from the crown every spring for years. The only real task is deadheading, and it matters more here than on almost any other herb: one plant makes thousands of viable seeds, they persist in the soil, and the species is invasive enough in the upper Midwest that letting it loose is a problem for the neighbourhood rather than just for you. Cut the spent whorls off as soon as the flowers brown.
The tidiest way to do that is a hard shear after the main bloom - take the whole plant back by a third to a half, which removes every seed head at once, refreshes the foliage, and often brings a second, smaller flush of flowers. Every three or four years, lift and divide the clump in late autumn or early spring: it rejuvenates a tired centre and gives you free plants. Clear the dead stems in winter, and if the plant seeded at all, bin them rather than composting them, because a compost heap makes an excellent motherwort nursery.
Expect volunteers regardless, and pull them small. First-year seedlings have distinctive maple-like palmate leaves and come out of moist spring soil with a tug; a summer plant has a taproot and an opinion.
Harvest
Cut the flowering tops - leaves, stems and flowers together - as the plant comes into full bloom, late June through August. Wear gloves: the calyxes are spined and dry into burrs.
The herb is the aerial parts at flowering: leaves, upper stems and flowers cut together, taken just as the plant comes into full bloom. That is typically late June through August depending on your zone, and timing matters more than technique - the constituents peak with the flowers and fall off once the plant turns to seed. Cut the top third of each stem, above a leaf pair, on a dry morning once the dew has lifted. A second, smaller flush usually follows six to eight weeks later.
Before you start: put gloves and long sleeves on. Every flower sits in a calyx tipped with five stiff spines, and as they dry on the stem they become rows of small hard burrs that will scratch bare forearms raw. Some people also get a rash from handling the fresh plant. This is a five-minute preparation that turns the harvest from unpleasant into easy, and it is the practical fact nobody tells you.
Be patient in the first year. A seed-grown plant usually spends year one building a crown and may not flower at all; harvest lightly in year two, and take a full cut from year three, when a mature clump gives more herb than a household will use. Leave the lower, oldest leaves - by bloom time they are often yellowing or mildewed and add nothing.
Storage
Hang the cut tops to dry, then strip the leaves and flowers off the prickly stems and store airtight in the dark for about a year; a fresh-plant tincture is the other standard preparation.
Motherwort dries easily. Bundle the cut stems loosely and hang them upside down somewhere warm, dark and airy, or spread them on screens; they are done in one to two weeks, when the leaves crumble and the stems snap. Then strip the dried leaves and flowers off the stems - it is far easier once dry than fresh, though the spined calyxes are still prickly, so keep the gloves on - and discard the woody stem cores. Store the crumbled herb airtight and out of the light, where it keeps its bitterness and its color for about a year.
The other standard preparation is a fresh-plant tincture, and it is the one most herbalists prefer for this herb: pack a jar with the chopped fresh flowering tops, cover with high-proof spirit, steep for a few weeks in the dark, and strain. It captures the resinous and volatile fractions that drying loses, and it keeps for years. Motherwort is very bitter either way - the dried tea is astringent and hard going, which is why the tincture, taken in drops, is the more usual route. Whatever you make, label the jar with the plant name and the date, and read the safety notes before you use it.
Propagation & seed saving
The easiest plant in the garden to propagate and the hardest to stop: it self-sows in thousands. Save a pinch of seed, divide the clump every few years, and spend the rest of your effort limiting it.
You will never buy motherwort twice. Left to itself it self-sows in enormous quantity - a mature plant produces thousands of small dark nutlets, four to each spent flower, and they persist in the soil and germinate over several seasons. If you want seed deliberately, let a couple of stems go over, cut them into a paper bag once the calyxes are brown and brittle, and rub the nutlets out with gloved hands. Store them cool and dry; they need a cold moist period before they will germinate, which is why an autumn sowing outdoors works so much better than a spring one indoors.
Division is the other route and the better one for a garden: lift the clump in late autumn or early spring, cut it into pieces that each carry roots and a growth bud, and replant at 18-24 inches. Softwood cuttings taken from non-flowering shoots in early summer also root, though nobody really needs them given how freely the plant seeds.
The honest framing for this section is inverted from most herbs: propagation is not the problem, containment is. Deadhead before seed set, pull volunteers while they are small, keep the plant away from woodland edges and natural areas, and bin any seed-bearing material rather than composting it. Treat spare plants as gifts to people who understand what they are taking on.
Nutrition
Not a food in any sense - it is far too bitter to eat and used only in tea and tincture amounts. Its chemistry is genuinely interesting: iridoids, the betaine stachydrine, bitter diterpenes, flavonoids and phenolics.
Motherwort has no nutritional role. It is intensely, mouth-puckeringly bitter, it is used in tea and tincture amounts rather than eaten, and nobody has ever consumed enough for calories, vitamins or minerals to be worth mentioning. Its interest is entirely chemical.
The aerial parts carry a well-characterised mix: iridoid glycosides such as leonuride and ajugol, the pyrrolidine betaine stachydrine (often used as the marker compound for the herb), bitter labdane diterpenes including leocardin, flavonoids such as rutin, hyperoside and quercetin glycosides, phenolic acids, tannins and a little volatile oil. One point worth knowing, because it is widely muddled: leonurine, the alkaloid most often cited in motherwort research, is a constituent of the Asian species Leonurus japonicus and has generally not been detected in L. cardiaca at all. That single fact explains a lot of the confusion in the popular literature about what this plant does.
In the kitchen
Honestly, it isn't a culinary herb - it is far too bitter for the kitchen and has no cooking tradition. Its only real edible history is as a bittering herb in old ales, and as a bitter tea usually blended with something kinder.
There is no polite way to put this: motherwort tastes terrible. It is harshly bitter with a rough astringent finish, and unlike its mint-family cousins - basil, oregano, thyme, savory - it has essentially no culinary tradition anywhere. Nobody cooks with it, and you should not try to season anything with it.
Its one genuine food-adjacent history is in brewing. Before hops took over European beer, brewers used all sorts of bitter herbs to balance malt and help preserve the drink, and motherwort appears in that company in old herbals and in the folk record of Ukrainian and Russian ales. A few modern craft brewers have revived it as a gruit bittering herb. Beyond that, the plant's only real use in a cup is as a medicinal tea, and even herbalists usually blend it with lemon balm, mint or honey to make it drinkable, or skip the tea entirely in favour of a tincture taken in drops. If you want a mint-family herb for the kitchen, grow one of the others; grow motherwort for the apothecary shelf and the bumblebees.

Few plants wear their medicinal history so openly. 'Motherwort' records centuries of use in childbirth, in postpartum recovery, and for painful, delayed or irregular periods, while cardiaca - 'of the heart' - records its other tradition entirely: palpitations, a racing or fluttering pulse, and the anxious tightness in the chest that goes with them. European herbals from Dioscorides onward describe it as a calming heart herb, and its folk reputation was specifically for the place where anxiety and heartbeat meet. It has also long been used for the palpitations and restlessness of menopause and of an overactive thyroid.
What the modern evidence actually shows. The chemistry is real and well described - iridoids, stachydrine, bitter diterpenes, flavonoids - and laboratory and animal work reports mild sedative, blood-pressure-lowering and antiarrhythmic activity, along with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. But the human evidence is weak. What clinical work exists is mostly small, old, methodologically poor, and drawn from Russian and Chinese sources that have never been replicated to modern standards. Worse, a great deal of the 'motherwort' trial literature - including work on postpartum bleeding - is actually on Leonurus japonicus, Chinese motherwort (yi mu cao), a different species with a different constituent profile whose results do not transfer to this plant. The European Medicines Agency lists L. cardiaca herb as a traditional-use herbal medicine for nervous cardiac complaints, a category that rests explicitly on long-standing use rather than on proof of efficacy. The honest summary: a plausible mild calming herb with a long tradition and no good clinical proof.
The cautions are real and specific. Motherwort is a uterine stimulant and emmenagogue: do not use it in pregnancy. (Some traditions use it at term or in labour under professional supervision - that is a clinician's decision, not a garden one.) It may add to the effect of cardiac medications, including digoxin and other cardiac glycosides, and to sedatives and CNS depressants; it has possible antiplatelet activity, so take care with anticoagulants or a bleeding disorder; and it can interfere with thyroid function tests, so stop it before one. Reported adverse effects include diarrhea, stomach irritation, drowsiness, uterine bleeding, contact rash from handling, and photosensitivity - increased sun sensitivity of the skin. European guidance keeps the daily dose of powdered herb under about 3 grams - diarrhea, stomach irritation and uterine bleeding are reported at and above that amount - and limits unsupervised use to about four weeks. Not for children. And most importantly: palpitations, arrhythmia and heavy bleeding are things to have investigated by a doctor, not to self-treat with a garden herb. History
A central Asian plant that became a European apothecary staple, carried to North America by colonists as a garden medicinal and escaped everywhere - and the Western half of a naming muddle with the quite different Chinese motherwort.
Motherwort came out of central Asia and southeastern Europe and moved west through the classical and medieval medical tradition until it was a fixture of every physic garden. The genus name Leonurus means 'lion's tail', for the shaggy flowering stem; cardiaca is 'of the heart'. Greek and Roman writers describe it for anxiety and heart trouble, medieval and early-modern herbals repeat and expand the tradition, and the English name records the other half of its work - Nicholas Culpeper in 1653 recommended it plainly for driving melancholy from the heart, and the plant became a standard remedy of women's household medicine.
Colonists carried it to North America as a deliberate garden medicinal, and, being what it is, it escaped. It is now naturalized across southern Canada and everywhere east of the Rockies, in old yards, hedgerows, floodplains and waste ground, and its continued sale as a herb has helped it spread further - which is exactly why upper-Midwest conservation groups now list it among the plants invading natural areas, even though no state regulates it. Finding it growing wild near an old farmstead is often a sign of a long-vanished herb garden.
One lasting confusion is worth knowing. The Chinese motherwort of traditional medicine, yi mu cao, is Leonurus japonicus - a related but distinct annual or biennial species with a different chemistry, used mainly for gynaecological and obstetric complaints rather than for the heart. The two share a common name in English and are constantly conflated in popular writing and in supplement labelling, but they are not interchangeable plants.
Troubleshooting
No germination means the seed never got its cold chill; flopping stems mean the soil is too rich; a carpet of seedlings means you missed the deadheading; and a scratched forearm means you harvested without gloves.
Seed barely germinated: almost always the missing cold treatment. Motherwort needs 2-4 weeks of moist cold before it will sprout properly. Chill it in damp sand in the fridge, or sow outdoors in autumn and let winter handle it.
Tall, soft stems flopping over: the soil is too rich or too wet, or the plant is in too much shade. This is a herb that performs better in poor ground - stop feeding and watering it, and move it somewhere sunnier and leaner. Shearing after bloom also helps.
Seedlings everywhere the following spring: the flowers set seed. Hoe or pull the volunteers while they are tiny - the small maple-like palmate leaves are easy to recognise - and next year cut the spent flower whorls off as soon as they brown, or shear the whole plant back after bloom.
Scratched, itchy forearms after harvesting: the spined calyxes, and sometimes a contact rash from the fresh plant. Gloves and long sleeves, every time.

Growing across climates
Comfortably hardy from zone 3 to zone 8 and easy everywhere in between; marginal and short-lived in zone 9, unsuitable warmer. Winter wet kills it far sooner than winter cold, and its vigour is highest exactly where it is invasive.
Motherwort is a cold-climate plant that is limited by heat and wet, not by frost. Zones 3-4: fully hardy to around -40°F, dies cleanly to the ground and returns from the crown each spring with no protection at all. Zones 5-7: the sweet spot, and also where you must be most careful - this is the band where it grows most vigorously, seeds most heavily, and where the upper Midwest and Great Lakes states have seen it move into woodlands and natural areas. Deadhead without fail, and keep it away from a wild boundary.
Zone 8: still easy, with a longer season and a short dormancy; give it afternoon shade in the hotter, more humid parts and expect powdery mildew on the lower leaves by late summer, which matters little since the harvest comes at bloom. Zone 9: marginal. Plants tend to be short-lived and often behave as biennials, humid summers bring mildew and crown rot, and the winter chill that improves both seed germination and spring vigour is unreliable. Grow it in part shade on sharply drained ground and expect to replace it. Zone 10 and warmer: not worth attempting in the ground.
Everywhere, the constants are the same: it does not care about cold, poor soil, drought, or neglect, but it will rot in a low spot that holds winter water, and it will take over a bed anywhere it is happy. Site it high, dry and lean, and cut the flowers off.
