Meadowsweet
Contains salicylates, the aspirin family. Avoid it if you are sensitive to aspirin or salicylates, and do not give it to feverish children or teenagers, by analogy with the Reye syndrome risk from aspirin. Use caution alongside anticoagulants such as warfarin, and avoid in salicylate-sensitive asthma, where it can trigger bronchospasm. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The flowers are food-safe as a flavoring in the small amounts used in cordials and desserts.
Overview
A tall Rosaceae perennial for ground that stays damp - rain gardens, pond edges, ditches, wet meadows. Frothy cream plumes smell strongly of almond and honey, it was the great medieval strewing herb, and its salicylates gave aspirin its name. Moisture is the one rule that decides everything: it will not tolerate dry soil.
Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is the plant for the wet spot nothing else likes. It is a hardy rose-family perennial, 3-6 feet tall, that throws up stiff reddish stems clothed in dark, elm-like leaves and tops them in midsummer with broad, frothy cream plumes that smell powerfully of almond and honey. In its native Europe it lines ditches, riverbanks and damp meadows by the mile, and in a garden it belongs in exactly those conditions: a rain garden, a pond edge, a downspout outfall, or heavy clay in a low spot.
That is the whole siting rule, and it is not negotiable. Meadowsweet has no drought tolerance whatsoever, and a plant in ordinary well-drained border soil will brown at the leaf margins by July every year. Given wet feet it is close to indestructible: fully hardy to zone 3, untroubled by pests, ignored by deer and rabbits, and long-lived.
It has more history than almost any herb in the garden. It was the favorite strewing herb of medieval halls, flavored the mead that gave it the old name meadwort, and, back when botanists filed it under Spiraea ulmaria, gave up the salicylic acid that Bayer later acetylated and named aspirin - the a for acetyl, the spir for Spiraea.

Leaf Scorch (sun & drought) High
Leaf scorch is not a disease and there is nothing to spray for it. It is what happens when a leaf loses water faster than the roots can replace it: the tissue farthest from the veins - the margins and the tips - dries out first and turns brown and papery, and the browning works inward while the rest of the leaf stays green. Hot sun, dry soil, drying wind, heat reflected off paving or a wall, a small or damaged root system, and a plant sited somewhere sunnier or drier than it wants are the usual causes, singly or together. It also happens in winter on evergreens, when bright sun and wind pull water out of the leaves while the ground is frozen and the roots cannot resupply. Shade and woodland plants, shallow-rooted plants, and anything recently planted scorch most easily.
Watch for: Browning that starts at the leaf edges and tips and spreads inward, with a fairly sharp line between the crisp brown tissue and the green that is still healthy. Leaves and fronds going dry, papery, and crisp rather than soft, yellow, or spotted - that is what separates this from a fungal problem. Damage worst on the side of the plant facing the sun or the prevailing wind and on the most exposed upper leaves, while the shaded interior stays fine. Symptoms appearing sharply after a heat wave, a dry spell, or a bright windy week in winter. Whole leaves or fronds shed early as the plant cuts its losses.
Prevent: Site the plant where it actually wants to be. This is a placement problem far more often than a watering problem, and a shade plant in hot afternoon sun will scorch every summer however much you water it. Give shade and woodland plants part-to-full shade and shelter from hot afternoon sun and drying wind. Keep the root zone consistently moist and mulch it well with leaf litter or another organic mulch, which holds water and keeps the roots cool - the single most useful routine step. Water deeply and thoroughly during dry spells rather than little and often, so moisture reaches the whole root zone. Pay particular attention through the first year after planting, when the root system is small and cannot keep up with the leaves. On evergreens in cold regions, make sure the plant goes into winter well watered, and keep it out of bright, windy, exposed positions.
Treat: Water deeply, mulch, and improve the shade - that is the whole treatment, because there is nothing here to kill. Leaves that are already scorched will not recover, so trim off badly browned foliage or fronds for appearance if you want to; the crown and roots are usually unharmed and push out fresh growth once conditions improve. On a plant that scorches badly every year the answer is to move it rather than to keep watering harder, because the siting is what is wrong. Some plants respond well to being cut back hard, which brings a clean flush of new foliage. And on plants that naturally die back or brown off late in the season, scorching at the end of a dry summer is normal and needs nothing at all.
By a wide margin meadowsweet's most common problem, and the reason most plantings disappoint. It is a wetland species with no drought reserve, so the leaf margins go brown, crisp and curled within days of the soil drying, and a plant in ordinary border soil scorches nearly every summer. Deep watering and thick mulch help, but the real answer is siting: a rain garden, ditch, pond edge or low wet spot, plus afternoon shade in zones 7 and warmer. Scorched leaves never recover; the crown does.
Japanese Beetles Medium
Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.
Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.
Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.
Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.
Meadowsweet is in the rose family and gets its share of Japanese beetle attention where the beetle is established, skeletonizing leaves and chewing into open flower plumes at exactly the moment you want to harvest them. Hand-pick into soapy water in the early morning, and do not hang pheromone traps anywhere near the planting - they pull in more beetles than they catch.
Powdery Mildew Medium
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
The one disease meadowsweet reliably gets, usually late and usually on a crowded, shaded or congested clump in a spell of warm days and humid nights. Dividing every three or four years and giving the clump air is more effective than any spray. Ironically a plant that is drought-stressed at the roots mildews worse, so keeping it wet helps twice over.
Aggressive Self-Seeding & Spread Medium
Not a pest but a management issue. This plant sets and sheds seed prolifically, so anything left to ripen builds a persistent seed bank in the soil and returns as a heavy flush of volunteers the following season. Much of that seed stays viable for years, which is why one season of letting it go can take several seasons to undo.
Watch for: Ripe seed heads or stalks shedding onto the ground, and a flush of volunteer seedlings coming up well beyond where the parent plant stood - most obvious in the first weeks of the plant's growing season.
Prevent: Cut, deadhead or harvest the seed heads before they ripen and shatter, which is far easier than dealing with what they drop. Where the plant is grown deliberately, keep it in defined rows or a contained bed so that volunteers are obvious, and site it only where naturalizing is welcome.
Treat: Hoe or hand-pull volunteers while they are small and before they set seed - the existing seed bank will keep germinating for several seasons either way, so this is an ongoing job rather than a single fix. Where the volunteers are themselves edible, harvesting them is the easiest control, but only ever eat or grow on a seedling you can positively identify.
Meadowsweet seeds freely wherever the ground stays damp, which is why it has naturalized across the Northeast and eastern Canada and why some Midwestern states call it a noxious weed and restrict planting it. In a garden it is manageable: shear the flowering layer off as the plumes brown, well before seed ripens, and pull volunteers while small. Near a natural wetland or waterway, do not rely on that - grow the sterile double 'Flore Pleno', which sets no seed, or choose a different plant.
Aphids Low
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
Colonies gather on the soft shoot tips during the fast spring surge, and occasionally in the developing flower heads. A hard jet of water knocks them off and a plant this vigorous grows straight past them. Ease off nitrogen if it happens every year - lush soft growth in rich wet soil is what they breed on.
Slugs & Snails Low
Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.
Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.
Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.
Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.
Largely a problem on young plants and on the soft new shoots each spring, since the permanently damp mulched ground meadowsweet needs is ideal slug habitat. An established clump is too big and too tough to care. Pull mulch back an inch or two from the crown and hand-pick after dark for the few weeks the shoots are tender.
Rust Low
A minor fungal leaf disease that raises orange to rusty-brown pustules on the foliage in humid, crowded, poorly ventilated conditions. On a tough, well-sited plant it is cosmetic - it marks the leaves late in the season and the plant grows straight through it - and it is rarely worth treating.
Watch for: Orange to rusty-brown flecks, spots or streaks on the leaves, often raised and powdery on the undersides, worst in muggy weather and on crowded, shaded or poorly ventilated plants.
Prevent: Space plants for airflow, grow them in full sun, and avoid overhead watering. Remove the old foliage at the annual cut-back, since spores carry over on last year's leaves.
Treat: Remove affected foliage and improve airflow. This is almost always cosmetic and outgrown, so fungicide is rarely warranted.
Meadowsweet has its own specific rust that raises orange-brown pustules and small swellings on leaves, stalks and sometimes flower stems. It is disfiguring rather than dangerous and the clump grows through it. Pick off affected leaves, thin for airflow, and clear the dead stems away in autumn instead of composting them.

Grown entirely for its foliage, which emerges bright butter-yellow in spring and fades to lime-green by midsummer. It is a genuinely striking plant in a shaded damp corner, and it comes with two conditions: it needs shade, because golden foliage scorches even faster than the species does, and many growers cut the flower stems out to keep fresh gold leaves coming. Smaller and slower than the species, usually 18-30 inches. Treat it as an ornamental rather than an herb crop.
Denser, fluffier, longer-lasting cream plumes of fully double florets on a slightly more compact plant, typically 3-4 feet.
An old double-flowered form, also sold as 'Plena', whose fully double florets make a denser, longer-lasting, creamier plume. The practical point is that it is effectively sterile and sets no seed, which makes it the sensible choice anywhere you want meadowsweet's looks and scent without the volunteers - a small garden, a shared bed, or anywhere near a natural wetland. Somewhat shorter and slower-spreading than the species. Still perfectly usable for cordials.
Stiff reddish stems to 5-6 feet carrying dark green pinnate leaves with sharply toothed elm-like leaflets, white and downy underneath, topped by frothy irregular plumes of tiny creamy-white flowers 4-6 inches across.
The straight species, and the one to grow if you want the herb rather than the ornament - it is what herbal and culinary use means when it says meadowsweet, and the only form widely sold as seed. Vigorous to 5-6 feet in wet ground, with the strongest almond-honey scent of the group. It also self-seeds the most freely, so deadhead it. Filipendula ulmaria has surprisingly few cultivars for such an old garden plant, and the handful that exist are foliage or flower-form selections rather than improved herbs.

A variegated form with leaves irregularly splashed and blotched in yellow over green, brightest in spring and settling down as the season goes on. Like 'Aurea' it wants part shade and constant moisture, and it burns in hot sun. Shoots that revert to plain green are more vigorous and should be cut out at the base as soon as you see them, or they take the plant over within a couple of seasons.
Grow
Give it permanently moist to wet soil in sun or part shade and almost nothing else matters. Start from divisions for a plant this year, or from cold-stratified seed sown on the surface for a patch in two.
Choose the site first, because everything else follows from it. Meadowsweet wants soil that stays moist to genuinely wet and it will not accept dry ground - a rain garden, the margin of a pond or ditch, a boggy corner, or heavy clay that holds water are all ideal. It grows happily in full sun where the soil is reliably wet, and prefers part shade anywhere the soil might dry or the summers run hot; in the South, afternoon shade is close to mandatory. Any texture from sand to heavy clay suits it as long as it holds water, and it takes neutral to alkaline soil comfortably.
From divisions or potted plants is the quick route: plant in spring or autumn, crown level with the surface, 18-24 inches apart, water in hard and mulch. One plant fills that space in two seasons and flowers in its first or second summer.
From seed takes patience. The seed needs a cold-moist chill - 4-6 weeks in damp sand in the fridge, or simply sow outdoors in autumn and let winter do it. It also needs light to germinate, so press it onto the surface of a moisture-retentive mix and do not cover it. Germinate cool, around 50-60°F, over two to six weeks. First-year seedlings are unimpressively small; they are building roots, and the plant explodes in size in its second year.
Care
Water, water, and deadhead. Keep the soil wet, mulch deeply, cut the browning plumes before they seed, support a floppy clump in rich ground, and divide every three or four years.
Sited right, meadowsweet asks for very little. Sited wrong, no amount of care rescues it. The single ongoing job is moisture: water deeply whenever the top inch dries, mulch 2-3 inches deep to halve that work, and understand that leaves scorched by a dry spell are damaged permanently - they brown at the margins and stay that way until the plant is cut down. A spring top-dressing of compost is all the feeding it wants; heavy nitrogen only produces soft stems that lean and mildew.
Two other habits matter. Deadhead as the plumes brown - shear the whole flowering layer off at once when the display is over. This is your only real control on self-seeding, and the plant looks far better for it, since the spent heads go an unattractive rusty brown. And support a clump in rich ground: 4-6 foot stems in fertile wet soil can splay after heavy rain, so slip a grow-through ring over the crown at about 18 inches tall, long before it is needed.
Beyond that, cut the stems down after frost blackens them, and lift and divide every three or four years when the clump develops a dead woody center. It needs no winter protection anywhere in its range, and it is one of the few perennials you never have to worry about drainage for.
Harvest
Cut whole flowering tops at full bloom on a dry morning, when the almond scent and salicylate content peak; take leaves for tea before flowering, and leave two thirds of any clump standing.
The crop is the flowering top: the plume plus 6-12 inches of leafy stem. Cut it when the plumes are open and creamy, before any tips have started to brown. Go out in late morning on a warm dry day, once the dew has burned off, so the tops reach the drying screen dry. Timing within the season matters more than timing within the day: a study of meadowsweet inflorescences found early-blooming heads carried roughly 1.2-2 times the volatile oil of late-blooming ones, with salicylates making up most of that oil, so cut from early to full bloom and do not wait.
Leaves are gathered in late spring and early summer while soft. They are a different thing from the flowers: where the plumes smell of almond and honey, the crushed leaves smell of wintergreen and antiseptic, and they are considerably more astringent. Most people making meadowsweet tea use the flowering tops. The root is lifted in autumn for traditional preparations and for a black dye, and is the most tannic part of the plant.
Harvest sustainably. Take no more than a third of a clump in a season, and nothing at all from a first-year plant. An established clump gives you far more than a household will use - a few plumes flavor a gallon of cordial - so there is rarely any reason to cut hard.
Storage
Dry the tops fast in shade and jar them airtight in the dark; dried flowers hold their almond aroma about a year. Cordial, syrup and vinegar keep the fresh scent far better than drying does.
Meadowsweet's aroma is volatile, so speed and shade are everything when drying. Spread the tops in a single loose layer on screens, or hang small bunches, somewhere warm, airy and dark - never in sun, which bleaches the color and flattens the scent, and never packed thickly, which molds them. They are done when the stems snap. Strip the flowers off the stems at that point and store them in an airtight jar in a dark cupboard, where they hold a usable almond aroma for around a year before fading.
Honestly, though, drying loses much of what makes the plant worth growing. The fresh flowers are extraordinary and the dried ones merely pleasant, so the better storage methods capture them wet: a cordial or syrup made by steeping fresh plumes in sugar syrup with lemon and bottled or frozen in portions, a flower vinegar, a tincture for medicinal use, or simply plumes frozen whole in bags for later infusing. Any of these carries the almond-honey character through the winter in a way a jar of dried flowers does not.
Propagation & seed saving
Division is the reliable route and gives you plants in a season; seed works but needs a cold chill, light, and patience through a slow first year. It also self-sows enthusiastically, which is a supply and a problem at once.
Division is how most gardeners multiply meadowsweet and it is close to foolproof. In autumn or very early spring, lift a clump with a fork, split it into fist-sized pieces each carrying roots and a visible growing point, throw away the woody center, and replant into damp ground at 18-24 inches. The divisions barely notice. Doing this every three or four years keeps the parent flowering well, so propagation and maintenance are the same job.
Seed is slower but free and gives you a lot at once. The seed is dormant and needs a cold-moist chill of 4-6 weeks (some growers give it up to three months on stored seed) before it will move. The simplest method is to skip the fridge entirely and sow outdoors in autumn, letting winter chill it naturally so it germinates in spring. Whichever route you take, the seed needs light: surface-sow onto a moisture-retentive mix and never cover it, and never let it dry, since free-draining seed compost is the usual cause of failure. Expect germination over 2-6 weeks at cool temperatures. Seedlings are slow and small through year one and then take off in year two.
You will also get volunteers, freely, wherever the ground stays damp - which is genuinely useful if you want more plants, and the main reason to deadhead if you do not. Transplant volunteers while they are small; older plants move less willingly.
Nutrition
Not a food. It is used as a flavoring and an infusion in small amounts, so it contributes nothing nutritionally; the compounds that matter are salicylates, tannins, mucilage and flavonoids, and the tannins are a reason not to drink it constantly.
Meadowsweet is an aromatic and a medicine rather than anything you eat for nourishment. A few plumes flavor a gallon of cordial, and a cup of tea uses a pinch of dried flowers, so its nutritional contribution is effectively nil. Treat any nutrient table that lists it per 100 grams as an arithmetic exercise.
What the plant actually carries is a distinctive and rather elegant combination: salicylates (salicin, salicylaldehyde, methyl salicylate and the glycosides spiraein, gaultherin and monotropitin), hydrolysable tannins, mucilage, and flavonoids including spiraeoside, rutin and hyperoside, plus vitamin C. Salicylates make up a very large share of the flower's volatile oil, which is why the plant smells of wintergreen when bruised. One practical consequence of the tannin content: meadowsweet is astringent, and long-term daily use of tannin-rich herbs is generally discouraged, since heavy tannin intake can reduce the absorption of iron and other minerals.
In the kitchen
The flowers taste of almond, honey and vanilla and are one of the great wild flavorings - meads, wines, cordials, jams, sorbets and infused cream. Infuse gently and never boil hard, which drives the aroma straight off.
Meadowsweet flowers are among the best flavorings any temperate garden produces. The scent is almond, honey and vanilla with a hint of wintergreen behind it, and it transfers beautifully into liquids. The oldest use is in drink: it flavored mead for so long that the plant's old English name is meadwort, and it went into country wines, ales and small beers across northern Europe. Today the standard home preparation is a cordial - fresh plumes steeped in sugar syrup with lemon - which is exceptional in sparkling water, over ice cream, or in a gin cocktail.
Beyond drinks, infuse the flowers into cream or milk for panna cotta, custard, ice cream and sorbet; steep them into jams and jellies, where they pair especially well with strawberry, gooseberry and rhubarb; make a flower vinegar; or drop a plume into a bottle of vodka or a jar of honey. The one technique to know is gentle infusion: warm, never boiling, and covered. A hard boil drives the aroma out of the pan and leaves you with tannin and bitterness.
The leaves are a different and more medicinal flavor - wintergreen and astringent rather than sweet - and are best used sparingly or not at all in food. Almost everything worth making comes from the flowers.

Meadowsweet is one of the most historically important medicinal plants in Europe, and it is genuinely interesting because of a paradox. It is the plant that gave up the salicylic acid behind aspirin - and yet where aspirin is famous for irritating the stomach lining, meadowsweet's traditional use is for the stomach.
Traditional uses. Herbalists have used it for two broad things. First, and most characteristically, as a digestive remedy for complaints of hyperacidity: gastritis, heartburn and reflux, acid dyspepsia, gastric ulceration, and traditionally for childhood diarrhoea. Second, as aspirin's ancestor would suggest, for aches, rheumatic and joint pain, and feverish colds. The usual preparation is an infusion of the dried flowering tops, or a tincture.
Why herbalists treat it differently from an aspirin tablet. This is the part worth understanding. An aspirin tablet is one isolated, acetylated molecule. The whole herb delivers its salicylates as slower-acting glycosides, and delivers them alongside hydrolysable tannins and mucilage. The traditional reading is that the tannins and mucilage protect and tone the gastric mucosa while the salicylates damp inflammation, which is why the same chemistry that makes aspirin hard on the stomach is used here to soothe it. That is a coherent and widely taught rationale, and animal work has shown meadowsweet extract protecting against aspirin-induced gastric lesions - though the results were not consistent under strongly acidic conditions.
What the evidence does and does not show. Be clear-eyed here. The European Medicines Agency lists meadowsweet as a traditional herbal medicinal product - a registration based on long-standing use rather than on trial data - for the relief of minor joint pain and as an adjuvant in colds. There are no clinical trials establishing an antacid or anti-ulcer effect in people, which is precisely the use it is most famous for. Laboratory and animal studies report anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity, and the constituent chemistry is well characterised. So: a long, coherent tradition and supportive preclinical work, but not demonstrated clinical efficacy.
Cautions, and they are real. Because meadowsweet contains salicylates, the aspirin cautions largely carry over. Avoid it entirely if you have an aspirin or salicylate sensitivity, or a sulfite sensitivity. Do not give it to children or teenagers with a fever - salicylates are linked to Reye syndrome, and herbal practice avoids salicylate herbs in feverish children by analogy. Avoid it in salicylate-sensitive asthma, where bronchospasm has been documented. Use caution alongside anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs such as warfarin and aspirin itself: meadowsweet carries both salicylate and heparin-like compounds, and while reported interactions remain theoretical rather than documented, monitoring is the sensible course. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding - uterine activity has been shown in vitro. And because of the tannin load, it is not an herb for continuous long-term use. History
The favorite strewing herb of medieval halls, a sacred herb of the Druids, the flavoring that named mead - and the plant that gave aspirin its name, back when botanists called it Spiraea ulmaria: the a from acetyl, the spir from Spiraea.
Few garden plants have a longer or better-documented cultural life. Meadowsweet was the great strewing herb of medieval and Tudor Europe, scattered across floors and hall rushes because its scent grows stronger when trodden on rather than weaker; it is repeatedly named as a favorite of Elizabeth I for exactly that reason. It went into churches and bridal paths, which is where the old name bridewort comes from. It was, with vervain and water-mint, listed among the sacred herbs of the Druids, and traces of it have been found in Bronze Age burials.
Its other old name, meadwort, records what it was used for: flavoring mead, and later ales, wines and small beers throughout northern Europe. The modern name is a happy accident of language - 'meadowsweet' looks like a reference to the meadows it grows in, but it descends from the fifteenth-century meadsweet, the mead-sweetener, rather than from the meadow at all.
Then comes the chemistry. When nineteenth-century chemists went hunting for the active principle behind willow bark, meadowsweet turned out to be an even richer source, and salicylic acid was obtained from its flower buds by Raffaele Piria in 1838 - at a time when the plant was classified as Spiraea ulmaria, so the acid was named Spirsaure, spiraeic acid, after the genus. When Bayer acetylated salicylic acid at the end of the century and needed a trade name for the result, they built it from that history: a for acetyl, spir for Spiraea, plus a conventional drug ending. Botanists have since moved the plant into Filipendula, so the genus that named the world's most famous drug no longer contains the plant it was named for.
Troubleshooting
Brown crisped leaf margins mean the soil dried out and are the near-universal complaint; flopping means rich soil or shade; no flowers means too dry, too shady or an old congested clump; seedlings everywhere mean you did not deadhead.
Leaf margins brown, crisp and curled by midsummer: the classic and almost only real meadowsweet problem. It is leaf scorch from the soil drying, not a disease. Scorched leaves never recover, though the crown does. Water deeply and mulch as a stopgap, but the actual fix is the site - move the plant to a rain garden, ditch, pond edge or low wet spot, or give it afternoon shade in a hot climate.
Stems leaning or splayed open after rain: too much richness, too much shade, or simply a big clump in a wet year. Ring or stake it early next season, cut back on feeding, and give it more sun if the soil is reliably wet.
Few or no flowers: most often a plant that is too dry or too deeply shaded, or a clump that has been in place five or six years and has gone congested with a dead center. Divide it in autumn and replant the vigorous outer pieces.
White powdery coating on the leaves: powdery mildew, worst on crowded, still, shaded clumps and in a dry-air spell. Thin or divide for airflow, water at the base, and cut affected stems out. It is usually late-season and cosmetic.
Orange-brown pustules on the leaves: rust, which meadowsweet gets a specific one of. Remove affected leaves, improve airflow, and clear the debris in autumn. Rarely worth spraying.
Seedlings coming up everywhere: you left the plumes on past ripening. Shear the flowering layer off as it browns next year, or grow the sterile double 'Flore Pleno', which sets no seed at all.
Young leaves shredded overnight: slugs, which love the damp ground this plant needs. Pull mulch back from the crown and hand-pick after dark for the few weeks the shoots are soft.
Growing across climates
Happiest in zones 3-7, where a cool damp climate suits it exactly. Zones 8-9 are marginal and demand shade plus permanent moisture. Everywhere, summer heat and dry soil are the limits, not winter cold.
Meadowsweet is a plant of cool, wet northern Europe, and its comfort zone in North America mirrors that. Winter cold is not the constraint - it is fully hardy to around zone 3 and needs no protection anywhere. Heat and dryness are what limit it.
Zones 3-5: excellent, and about as close to its native climate as North America offers. Full sun is fine here provided the ground stays damp, and the plant reaches its full 5-6 feet. Cold wet winters are exactly what it wants.
Zones 6-7: still very good. Full sun works at a genuinely wet site; anywhere else, give it afternoon shade and be serious about mulch and irrigation through July and August.
Zones 8-9: marginal, and honest about it. Hot humid summers push the plant hard: expect a shorter plant, earlier and briefer bloom, more mildew, and scorch in any dry spell. Grow it only in part to full afternoon shade, only where the soil never dries - a pond margin, a bog garden, a shaded rain garden - and consider a container standing in a saucer of water. Zone 9 is the edge; in the hot humid Southeast, many gardeners do better with the North American native Filipendula rubra (queen of the prairie), which handles heat rather better.
Dry-summer western climates deserve a warning of their own: even in a cool zone, a Mediterranean summer with no rain from June to September means constant irrigation, and meadowsweet in an unirrigated western garden simply fails. Match it to the water, not to the zone number.
