Boneset
Not a food. Every part contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids - cumulative liver toxins, as in comfrey - and tinctures and hot infusions concentrate them; the consensus is not to ingest unsaturated-PA plants. Large doses cause vomiting and act as a laxative. Avoid entirely in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with liver disease, or on liver-stressing medication. Being Aster-family it can trigger reactions in those allergic to ragweed, chamomile and daisies, and the hairy foliage irritates some skin.
Overview
The native you can identify at a glance: the stem appears to run straight through a single fused leaf. A 4-foot wet-meadow perennial crowned with flat white flower heads that feed late-summer pollinators, and the great colonial fever herb - named for break-bone fever, not for knitting bones.
Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) has the most unmistakable leaf in the eastern meadow. Each opposite pair is fused at the base into one long, tapering, wrinkled leaf, so the hairy stem appears to have been pushed straight through the middle of it — which is exactly what perfoliatum means, and why the plant's other old name is thoroughwort. Once you have seen it you can never mistake the plant again, and that certainty matters more here than for almost any other herb in this catalog.
Above those pierced leaves the plant carries flat-topped clusters of tiny white florets from midsummer into fall, on stems reaching four to five feet. Because the florets are shallow and open, they feed an unusually wide crowd — small native bees, wasps, hoverflies, beetles, skippers and butterflies — at the exact point in the season when nectar runs thin, and several tiger moths raise their caterpillars on the leaves. It is a wetland plant of ditches, marsh edges and floodplains, and it wants wet or reliably moist ground and full sun to part shade. Give it a soggy corner where nothing else thrives and it will run itself.
Do not confuse it with its neighbours. Blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum, sometimes sold as 'blue boneset') is knee-high with fuzzy blue flowers and stalked triangular leaves. Joe-Pye weed is taller still with domed mauve-pink heads and leaves in whorls of three to five. White snakeroot has white heads at the same season but stalked, heart-shaped, sharply toothed leaves — and it is the plant behind historic milk sickness. Only boneset has the pierced leaf.
And the name is a persistent misunderstanding: boneset was never used to set fractures. It is named for 'break-bone fever' — the deep bone-aching fevers of dengue and influenza it was given for.

Leaf Scorch (sun & drought) High
Leaf scorch is not a disease and there is nothing to spray for it. It is what happens when a leaf loses water faster than the roots can replace it: the tissue farthest from the veins - the margins and the tips - dries out first and turns brown and papery, and the browning works inward while the rest of the leaf stays green. Hot sun, dry soil, drying wind, heat reflected off paving or a wall, a small or damaged root system, and a plant sited somewhere sunnier or drier than it wants are the usual causes, singly or together. It also happens in winter on evergreens, when bright sun and wind pull water out of the leaves while the ground is frozen and the roots cannot resupply. Shade and woodland plants, shallow-rooted plants, and anything recently planted scorch most easily.
Watch for: Browning that starts at the leaf edges and tips and spreads inward, with a fairly sharp line between the crisp brown tissue and the green that is still healthy. Leaves and fronds going dry, papery, and crisp rather than soft, yellow, or spotted - that is what separates this from a fungal problem. Damage worst on the side of the plant facing the sun or the prevailing wind and on the most exposed upper leaves, while the shaded interior stays fine. Symptoms appearing sharply after a heat wave, a dry spell, or a bright windy week in winter. Whole leaves or fronds shed early as the plant cuts its losses.
Prevent: Site the plant where it actually wants to be. This is a placement problem far more often than a watering problem, and a shade plant in hot afternoon sun will scorch every summer however much you water it. Give shade and woodland plants part-to-full shade and shelter from hot afternoon sun and drying wind. Keep the root zone consistently moist and mulch it well with leaf litter or another organic mulch, which holds water and keeps the roots cool - the single most useful routine step. Water deeply and thoroughly during dry spells rather than little and often, so moisture reaches the whole root zone. Pay particular attention through the first year after planting, when the root system is small and cannot keep up with the leaves. On evergreens in cold regions, make sure the plant goes into winter well watered, and keep it out of bright, windy, exposed positions.
Treat: Water deeply, mulch, and improve the shade - that is the whole treatment, because there is nothing here to kill. Leaves that are already scorched will not recover, so trim off badly browned foliage or fronds for appearance if you want to; the crown and roots are usually unharmed and push out fresh growth once conditions improve. On a plant that scorches badly every year the answer is to move it rather than to keep watering harder, because the siting is what is wrong. Some plants respond well to being cut back hard, which brings a clean flush of new foliage. And on plants that naturally die back or brown off late in the season, scorching at the end of a dry summer is normal and needs nothing at all.
By far boneset's most common problem and the one that ruins a planting. It is a wetland species with no drought reserve, so leaf margins go brown and crisp within days of the soil drying, and a plant in ordinary garden soil scorches most summers. Water deeply through dry spells and mulch, but the real fix is siting: a rain garden, ditch or low wet spot, or afternoon shade in the hot South. Scorched leaves never recover, though the crown does.
Aphids Medium
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
Boneset regularly carries dense colonies on stem tips and developing flower buds, more heavily than most natives. It looks alarming and almost always resolves itself: ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies and parasitic wasps find the plant within a week or two, and boneset is often the spot where they set up shop for the whole garden. Hose colonies off rather than spraying, and never spray a plant you intend to harvest herb from.
Slugs & Snails Medium
Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.
Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.
Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.
Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.
The wet ground boneset needs is exactly what slugs want, so young spring shoots and first-year plugs take the worst of it. An established clump outgrows the damage easily; a new plug can be eaten to nothing overnight. Protect the first season, keep mulch pulled back from the crown, and check under it after rain.
Japanese Beetles Low
Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.
Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.
Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.
Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.
Boneset is not a preferred host and usually gets only incidental skeletonizing on upper leaves where beetles are already thick on roses, grapes or linden nearby. Hand-pick into soapy water in the early morning. Do not hang a pheromone trap near the planting - it draws far more beetles than it catches.
Deer (browse resistance) Low
Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.
Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.
Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.
Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.
One of the genuinely deer- and rabbit-resistant natives: bitter, bristly and reliably passed over, which is a real advantage in a wet meadow where deer pressure is heavy. Expect occasional exploratory browsing on new spring shoots in a hard year, but no fencing is normally needed.
Aster Yellows Low
An incurable disease caused by a phytoplasma (a bacteria-like organism) spread by aster leafhoppers. It deforms flowers into stunted, greenish, leafy tufts and causes witches'-broom growth. It has a huge host range beyond asters - many flowers and vegetables are susceptible.
Watch for: Flowers turning green and deformed, tufted leafy growth from the cone, upright bushy witches'-broom shoots, yellowed stunted plants.
Prevent: Control leafhoppers and remove nearby weedy hosts; keep plants vigorous; there are no resistant fixes, so vigilance and prompt removal are key.
Treat: None - it cannot be cured. Pull and destroy infected plants immediately (do not compost) to keep leafhoppers from spreading it to healthy asters and other crops.
Uncommon but unmistakable on an Aster-family plant: flower heads come up green, leafy and deformed instead of opening white, and the stems yellow and stunt. There is no cure and the leafhoppers that spread it move on, so dig the affected plant out and bin it rather than composting it, and never propagate from one.
Powdery Mildew Low
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
Shows up late on the lower leaves of a crowded clump in still air, and is mostly cosmetic on a plant that is finishing its season anyway. Divide crowded clumps and thin stems for airflow rather than spraying. Do not cut herb for drying off mildewed foliage.

There are no named cultivars of boneset. Unlike its relative Joe-Pye weed, which has been selected into compact and dark-stemmed forms, E. perfoliatum has never been through garden breeding - it is sold simply as the straight species, as seed, plugs or potted plants, and what you buy is the wild plant. That is not a gap in this list; it is the honest state of the trade.
2-3 feet, bushy and fine-textured, with very narrow whorled leaves and small flat clusters of white florets in late summer.
The dry-ground cousin, sold by native nurseries across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. Narrow needle-like leaves in whorls give it a fine, almost feathery texture, and it wants sandy, sharply drained soil - the opposite of common boneset's requirement. An excellent late-season pollinator plant for a hot dry bank, but again a different species with no medicinal tradition behind it.
4-6 feet, branching, with clearly stalked toothed lance-shaped leaves and loose flat clusters of dull white florets in early to mid fall.
A separate species often sold or labelled as 'boneset,' and the one most likely to arrive by mistake. Its leaves are stalked and lance-shaped rather than fused around the stem, it branches near the top, it blooms a few weeks later, it tolerates far drier ground, and it self-sows aggressively enough to be a nuisance. Fine as a late pollinator plant; not the medicinal boneset, and not a substitute for it.
Indistinguishable from the species in the pot; regional populations vary somewhat in height, hairiness and bloom timing.
The one choice that genuinely matters when buying boneset. Native-plant nurseries usually state where their seed was collected, and stock grown from a population near you is adapted to your day length, frost dates and rainfall pattern, so it establishes faster and blooms on your local schedule. For a rain garden or meadow planting, ask for the nearest provenance available rather than the cheapest seed.
4-6 feet, downy and upright, with opposite stalked lance-shaped leaves marked by three prominent veins and flat-topped clusters of creamy white florets.
A midwestern prairie species of dry to medium soil, taller and coarser, with stalked three-veined leaves and off-white flower clusters in early fall. Sometimes offered as 'boneset' in prairie seed mixes. Useful for a dry meadow where common boneset would fail outright, but the two are not interchangeable and only E. perfoliatum has the pierced leaf.
Grow
Full sun to part shade and wet-to-moist ground - a rain garden, ditch, or pond edge. Plant plugs or divisions after frost at 18-24 inches, water hard the first year, and expect full 4-foot height in year two.
Site it wet. Boneset grows naturally in marshes, ditches, damp prairies and floodplain openings, tolerates temporary flooding and heavy clay, and its one real requirement is soil that does not dry out. A rain garden, a pond margin, a low spot that puddles after rain, a downspout outfall — all ideal. It will grow in ordinary garden soil, but then you are on the hook for watering it through every dry spell. It takes full sun to part shade; more sun means sturdier stems and heavier bloom, more shade means a looser, floppier plant.
The simplest start is plugs, potted plants or spring divisions, set out after last frost at 18-24 inches apart (a mature clump fills three feet). From seed, the plant needs 30-60 days of cold, moist stratification and light to germinate: the easiest route is to press the dust-fine seed onto bare damp soil in late fall and let winter do the work. Indoors, refrigerate the seed damp for a month or two first, then surface-sow and water from below — germination is slow and uneven, sometimes taking two to three months. Either way, a first-year plant stays modest and may not flower; the four-to-five-foot plant with the big white heads is the year-two plant.
Plant it deliberately. Established clumps creep outward on rhizomes and boneset self-sows freely into moist bare ground, which is a virtue in a meadow and a nuisance in a small border. Deadhead before the fluff flies if you want to keep it where you put it.
Care
Water is the entire job - keep the ground wet to moist and boneset is nearly carefree. Optionally cut back by a third in early June for a shorter plant, leave the stems up all winter, and divide every three or four years.
In the right wet spot boneset asks for almost nothing. Water is the whole of its care: keep the soil wet to moist and it stays lush; let it dry and the leaf margins go brown and crisp within days. Do not fertilize — rich ground gives you tall, soft, flopping stems. It is deer and rabbit resistant (bitter and bristly), and NC Extension records no serious insect or disease problems on it.
Two optional jobs. If the four-to-five-foot height is too much, or the clump leans in a rich or shaded spot, cut the stems back by about a third in late May or early June for a shorter, bushier plant that blooms a week or two later — the same trick gardeners use on Joe-Pye weed. And leave the dead stalks standing through winter: they hold seed for finches and sparrows, give structure, and shelter overwintering insects in their hollow stems. Cut them to a few inches in late winter as new growth appears.
Every three or four years, divide the clump in early spring — dig it, split it into fist-sized pieces with roots and shoots, and replant. It renews a clump that has gone hollow in the middle, keeps the spread in check, and is the fastest way to make more plants.
Harvest
Cut the top third of the leafy stems on a dry morning just as the first white florets open, leave most of the bloom for pollinators, and hang the bundles to dry - boneset is always used dried, never fresh.
The herb is the leaf and flowering top, cut on a dry morning after the dew lifts, just as the flower heads begin to open. That is when the plant is at its most aromatic and bitter; once the heads start fluffing into seed the peak has passed. Take the top third of the stems with clean shears and no more — a mature clump gives you plenty and the rest of the bloom is doing serious work for pollinators through the leanest weeks of their year. Wear gloves: the bristly foliage irritates some skin.
Dry it promptly and completely. Bundle small, loose handfuls and hang them in a dark, warm, airy place, or strip the leaves and flower heads onto screens. The herb is always used dried — the fresh plant is considerably more likely to cause nausea and vomiting. It is ready when the leaves crumble between your fingers and the stems snap rather than bend, usually one to two weeks. Fresh stems lose about four-fifths of their weight.
Before you cut anything, confirm the pierced leaf. White snakeroot, late boneset and blue mistflower grow in the same wet ground, flower white or blue at the same season, and none of them is this plant. And harvest with the safety picture in mind: boneset is not food, and the dried herb is for occasional short-course traditional use, not a daily tea — see the Medicine section.
Storage
Store the thoroughly dried herb whole in airtight jars away from light and heat, and use it within a year; the seed keeps a couple of years cool and dry, or sow it fresh in fall.
Once the leaves crumble and the stems snap, strip the herb off the stalks and pack it into airtight glass jars, kept somewhere dark, cool and dry. Leave it as whole as you can and crush it only when you use it — the aromatics go first once the leaf is broken up. Check the jars after a week: if the herb feels leathery or the glass fogs, it went in short of dry, so spread it out and finish it before it molds. Label it clearly, including the fact that it is a medicinal herb and not a kitchen one, so nobody mistakes the jar for a cooking herb.
Dried boneset holds its color and bitterness for about a year, fading gently after that. For seed, collect the fluffy heads once they ripen in fall, rub them out over a bowl, and store the chaffy seed cool and dry in a paper envelope — it stays viable a couple of years but germinates best fresh-sown in fall, where winter supplies the cold, moist period it needs. And as a hardy perennial the plant stores itself: the clump overwinters in the ground and comes back bigger every spring.
Propagation & seed saving
Division in early spring is the fast, certain route; seed needs 30-60 days cold and moist plus light, and is easiest fall-sown outdoors. It also self-sows, so a planting expands on its own.
Division is the reliable way. In early spring as the shoots break, lift the clump with a fork, pull or cut it into fist-sized pieces each carrying roots and a few buds, and replant them straight into damp ground at 18-24 inches. Every division takes; you get several full-sized plants in one season rather than waiting two years from seed; and doing it every three or four years keeps the parent clump vigorous instead of hollow.
Seed is cheap and abundant — there are roughly 160,000 seeds in an ounce — but it has two requirements. It needs 30-60 days of cold, moist stratification, and it needs light, so it must sit on the surface rather than under soil. The easy version is to scatter it onto bare damp ground in late fall and press it in; winter handles the chilling and spring brings the seedlings. Indoors, mix the seed with damp sand in a bag in the refrigerator for a month or two, then surface-sow onto moist mix, water from below only, and wait — germination is slow and patchy and can take two to three months. Sow far more than you think you need.
You will also get volunteers for free. Boneset self-sows readily into moist open soil, and seedlings transplant well while small. Between division, seed and volunteers, one plant is all you ever need to buy.
Nutrition
Not a food and not a source of nutrition - boneset contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids and should never be eaten. Its real value is ecological: a heavy late-season nectar plant and a host for several native moths.
There is no nutritional case to make for boneset, because you should not eat it. Every part carries pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and the plant is bitter enough that nobody would want to anyway. It is not a salad green, not a pot herb, and not a substitute for anything in the kitchen. Its only ingestive use is the traditional medicinal one described in the Medicine section, and that use comes with real cautions — read them there rather than treating this plant as something you consume.
What it feeds is the garden. Boneset's flat, shallow, open florets are accessible to insects with short mouthparts that cannot reach into deeper flowers, so the heads carry small native bees, solitary wasps, hoverflies, soldier beetles, skippers and butterflies in numbers, and they do it from midsummer into fall when nectar is scarcest. Several tiger moths, including the Clymene and lined ruby tiger moths, raise their caterpillars on the leaves, and finches and sparrows take the seed in winter. Sited in a wet corner, boneset does more for the food web than most things you could plant there.
In the kitchen
Boneset has no culinary use at all. It is intensely bitter and contains liver-toxic alkaloids - it does not belong in food, and the only reason to include this section is to say so plainly.
Boneset is not a culinary herb, and this section exists to close the door rather than open it. Despite growing beside plants like anise hyssop and lemon balm that go straight into the teapot, and despite one of its old names being 'Indian sage,' boneset has no place in cooking: it is intensely, mouth-puckeringly bitter, and it carries pyrrolizidine alkaloids that make regular ingestion a genuinely bad idea. Do not put it in a herbal tea blend for pleasure, do not infuse it in vinegar or oil for the table, and do not store it in the spice cupboard where it can be reached for by mistake.
The one traditional preparation is medicinal, not culinary — a bitter infusion of the dried herb, taken deliberately and briefly during an acute illness, and covered honestly in the Medicine section below. If you want a wet-loving native for the kitchen, grow mint, lemon balm, watercress or anise hyssop instead and let boneset do its job in the rain garden.

Boneset is one of the most historically important medicinal plants in North America, and the first thing to get right is the name: it has nothing to do with knitting broken bones. It is named for 'break-bone fever' — the dengue-like illness whose signature is a deep, wrenching ache in the bones and muscles — and by extension for the same bone-deep ache that comes with influenza. Indigenous peoples across the East used it as a fever remedy and taught its use to colonists; it became a fixture of the colonial and frontier household, was listed in the US Pharmacopoeia for most of the nineteenth century, and was among the Eclectic physicians' most-prescribed herbs.
How it is traditionally used. Western herbalists still regard boneset as a leading cold-and-flu herb, and in tradition the preparation decides the effect. A hot infusion of the dried flowering top is used as a diaphoretic, taken to promote sweating through a feverish, chilled, aching flu. The same herb steeped cold is fiercely bitter and used instead as a digestive bitter tonic. It is always used dried; the fresh plant is markedly more likely to cause nausea and vomiting.
What the evidence does and does not show. Honestly, very little. Laboratory work has identified sesquiterpene lactones (euperfolin, euperfolitin, eufoliatin), flavonoids, and polysaccharides that stimulate immune-cell activity in test tubes, and in vitro studies report some interference with influenza virus attaching to host cells. That is bench evidence. There is no good human trial showing that boneset shortens, eases, or prevents a cold or flu, it is not an approved treatment anywhere, and its standing rests on two and a half centuries of traditional use — a real thing, but not the same as proof.
The cautions are real and specific. Boneset contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, the class of cumulative liver toxins that makes comfrey unsafe to swallow. The 2018 analysis that put numbers on it found them in all 49 boneset samples tested (roughly 0.0002-0.07% by weight, mostly lycopsamine and intermedine and their N-oxides) and — the part that matters for how the herb is actually taken — found high concentrations in alcoholic tinctures and in hot water infusions and decoctions. No case of liver injury has been pinned on boneset specifically, but those authors did not land on a dosage limit: their conclusion was that any plant containing unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloids should not be ingested, and that this caution should hold until the toxicity and carcinogenicity of boneset's alkaloid content are better defined. Traditional practice is a short course during an acute illness, never a daily tea — but understand that tradition and the analytical view are genuinely in conflict here. Large doses cause vomiting and act as a laxative — sometimes sought deliberately in older practice, but not a harmless side effect. Avoid it entirely in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with any liver disease, and alongside medication that stresses the liver. As an Aster-family plant it can provoke reactions in people allergic to ragweed, chamomile and daisies, and the bristly foliage causes contact dermatitis in some. History
Indigenous fever medicine adopted wholesale by colonists, hung in bunches from the rafters of frontier households, listed in the US Pharmacopoeia through the 1800s, and reached for during the 1918 influenza pandemic.
Boneset's history is a straight line from Indigenous practice into the colonial and frontier household. Native peoples across the eastern woodlands used it against fevers, chills and aches, and colonists adopted it so completely that by the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries a bundle of dried boneset hanging in the attic or over the hearth was a standard feature of American farmhouses — the household answer to what people then called ague, breakbone fever, and the grippe. It picked up a shelf of names along the way: thoroughwort for the pierced leaf, feverwort and agueweed and sweating plant for its use, and Indian sage for where it came from.
It was formal medicine as well as folk medicine. Boneset was official in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1900 and again in the National Formulary from 1926 to 1950, was one of the most-prescribed herbs of the Eclectic physicians, saw heavy use in Civil War hospitals, and was widely reached for during the 1918 influenza pandemic. It faded from mainstream practice as aspirin and modern antipyretics arrived, and later as the pyrrolizidine-alkaloid question came into focus, but it never left Western herbalism, where it remains a well-regarded acute cold-and-flu herb. In the garden it has had a second life entirely: named North Carolina's Wildflower of the Year in 2003, it is now planted less as medicine than as one of the best late-season pollinator plants for a wet spot.
Troubleshooting
Nearly every problem is dryness - brown crisp leaf edges mean water. Flopping comes from rich or shady ground, mildew from a still crowded spot, and the plant you are unsure about is probably one of three lookalikes.
Brown, crisp, scorched leaf edges: the number one boneset complaint, and it is always dryness. This is a wetland plant. Water deeply, mulch, and if it happens every year move it somewhere genuinely damp instead of watering harder. Stems flopping or leaning: too rich, too shaded, or simply too tall — stop fertilizing, give it more sun, or cut the stems back by a third in late May or early June for a shorter, sturdier plant. White powdery film on the lower leaves: powdery mildew in a still, crowded, late-summer spot; thin or divide the clump for airflow. It is cosmetic on a plant that is finishing anyway, but do not harvest herb off mildewed foliage.
Dense colonies of aphids on the stem tips: common on boneset and usually self-correcting — ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies and parasitic wasps arrive within a week or two. Hose them off rather than spraying, because spraying kills the help. Green, leafy, distorted flower heads that never open properly: aster yellows, a leafhopper-spread phytoplasma with no cure. Dig out and bin the affected plant. No flowers the first year: normal — a plug or division puts its first season into roots. Seedlings everywhere: also normal. Deadhead before the fluff flies, or move the volunteers.
'Is this actually boneset?': the stem must appear to run straight through a single fused leaf. If the leaves have stalks and are heart-shaped and toothed, you have white snakeroot (historically the cause of milk sickness). If the leaves are stalked and lance-shaped and the plant branches near the top, it is late boneset (E. serotinum). If the flowers are blue and fuzzy on a knee-high plant, it is blue mistflower. If the heads are mauve-pink domes on a six-foot plant with whorled leaves, it is Joe-Pye weed. Only E. perfoliatum has the pierced leaf.
Growing across climates
Hardy right across the eastern and central US from zone 3 to zone 9 - cold is no obstacle at all. The limit is moisture, not temperature, so in the hot South and anywhere dry it needs a genuinely wet site.
Boneset's native range runs from Nova Scotia and Manitoba to Florida and Texas, which tells you most of what you need: it is fully hardy to zone 3 and untroubled by southern heat, and its real limit is water rather than temperature. Zones 3-5: completely at home, dying to the ground each winter and coming back reliably; northern wet meadows are its heartland. Zones 6-8: the easiest range, blooming from midsummer into fall wherever the ground stays wet; the only chore is watering through a summer dry spell if the site is not naturally damp.
Zone 9 and the hot humid South: genuinely grown here — it is native to Florida, Louisiana and Texas — but only in real wetland conditions. Ditches, pond edges, and low ground that stays saturated all work; an ordinary sunny bed in a Gulf summer will scorch it badly. Give it afternoon shade and permanent moisture and it is fine. The arid West and Southwest: outside its range and a poor fit — it can be grown in a constantly irrigated bog garden or a container standing in a saucer of water, but the plant is simply asking for more water than that climate wants to give. Everywhere, the rule is the same: match the moisture, and the zone takes care of itself.
