Introduced - native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia, and widely naturalized in North America. Many native North American hawthorns fill the same ecological and medicinal role.
Plant with care. A Class C noxious weed in Washington, a Class B noxious weed in Oregon and rated Limited by Cal-IPC. Birds carry the seed far into woodland and pasture, cut stumps resprout, and it hybridizes with native black hawthorn. In the West, plant a native Crataegus instead.

Ripe haws are safe cooked, but the seeds are cyanogenic - cook whole and sieve, never crush, blend or eat the kernels. Thorns reach an inch and are dangerous: wear gloves and eye protection. Hawthorn leaf, flower and berry extracts are a real cardiac herb with real interactions - digoxin, antiarrhythmics, beta-blockers, nitrates and blood-pressure drugs - and are not advised in pregnancy, breastfeeding or children. Heart failure is never self-treated; use only under medical supervision.

Overview

The classic thorny hedging tree - tough enough for any soil, any exposure and almost any abuse. Haws make jelly and a very good ketchup, leaf and flower make tea, and hawthorn extract is one of the better-evidenced cardiovascular herbs, though that use belongs with a doctor rather than a home experiment.

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) is the plant that built the British countryside: the quickthorn of ten thousand miles of field hedge, the May tree whose blossom marks the turn of spring, and one of the toughest small trees in cultivation. It grows on chalk, clay, sand, or builders' rubble, in full sun or half shade, in wind, drought, and salt spray, and it comes back from being cut to the ground. Left alone it makes a gnarled, round-headed tree of 15 to 25 feet that can live for centuries; cut and laid, it makes a stock-proof living fence armed with thorns up to an inch long.

It gives you three harvests. The haws - small deep-red pomes ripening in September - are mealy and dull raw but exceptionally rich in pectin, which makes them a superb jelly fruit and the base of the old hawthorn ketchup. The leaves and flowers, gathered together in May, make the tea and tincture that European herbalism has used for centuries. And that last use is why hawthorn is unusual: alongside a very old folk tradition it has a genuine modern clinical literature as an adjunct in chronic heart failure. That evidence is real, it is modest, and it is not something to act on without a doctor — heart failure is not a condition anyone self-treats. Grow it for the hedge, the wildlife, and the jelly, and treat the medicine chapter with the seriousness it deserves.

    • Water through the first two summers, then stopevery 7 d
      A hawthorn needs a deep soak once a week through its first two dry seasons while the roots go down. After that it is one of the most drought-proof small trees you can plant and wants nothing at all. Watering an established hawthorn does no good and encourages the soft growth that fire blight enters through.
    • Cut a new hedge hard in its first winter
      This is the step people skip and regret. In the first winter after planting, cut bare-root hedging whips back by roughly half, to 8-12 inches. It feels brutal and it is the whole secret of a thick hedge: cutting hard forces branching from the base, so the hedge is dense at ankle height instead of a row of bare legs with a bushy top. A specimen tree does not get this treatment - just remove damaged wood.
    • Site it away from junipers, and away from paths
      Two siting rules decided at planting and impossible to fix later. The Gymnosporangium rusts must alternate between hawthorn and juniper or eastern red cedar, so distance from cedars is the only real control. And the thorns are up to an inch long and sit at face height - keep the tree off walkways, driveways, play areas, and anywhere a child on a bike ends up.
    • Mulch the root zone and keep grass off the stem
      A wide ring of mulch kept a few inches clear of the bark holds moisture, keeps string trimmers away from young stems, and removes the grass competition that slows a young hawthorn more than most people expect. On a hedge, mulch or a weed mat along the whole line for the first two years pays for itself.

      The classic tea and tincture material is flowering shoot tips - top leaves and open flowers cut together - taken when most buds on a cluster have just opened and before the blossom starts to brown. Snip 4-6 inch tips from around the plant rather than stripping one branch, and take from wood you can reach without a ladder or a fight with the thorns.
    • Watch the blossom for fire blight in warm wet weather
      Open flowers are the doorway. Warm, humid weather during bloom is exactly what Erwinia amylovora needs, and infection that starts in a blossom runs back into the shoot within days. Walk the tree after a warm rainy spell in bloom and look for flowers that have suddenly gone brown and limp rather than fading normally.
    • Do not trim a hedge while it is in flower
      Trimming in bloom costs you the entire haw crop, removes the nectar that makes a hawthorn hedge worth having, and opens hundreds of fresh wounds in the exact weather fire blight likes. It is also nesting season. Leave the shears in the shed until late summer.

      This is when the two rusts and the leaf spot show themselves. Cedar-hawthorn rust makes bright orange spots on the leaves; cedar-quince rust swells and distorts the young haws themselves and cankers thorny twigs; hawthorn leaf spot starts as small brown-purple flecks that run together and drop the leaves. Look at the fruit as well as the foliage every couple of weeks.
    • Trim a formal hedge in late summer, in dry weather
      A formal hawthorn hedge takes one or two cuts between late spring and late summer, with the last around early autumn. An informal wildlife hedge is better cut once, or every other year, which is what leaves it enough two-year-old wood to flower and fruit. Cut only in dry weather and sterilize blades if fire blight is about.
    • Rake up and remove fallen spotted leaves
      Hawthorn leaf spot overwinters in fallen leaves under the plant, so a hedge that drops its leaves onto its own base reinfects itself every spring. Raking the leaf litter out from under a badly spotted hedge in late summer and again in autumn genuinely reduces next year's pressure, and it costs nothing.

      Pick when the fruit is fully deep red and gives slightly under a squeeze, usually from mid-September. The fastest method is to hold a bowl under a cluster and pull the whole bunch off, stalks and all, then pick the stalks out indoors while sitting down. Wear a long sleeve and a glove on the hand that goes into the thorns.
    • Beat the birds - they will clear a tree in days
      Robins, thrushes and waxwings work a hawthorn hard, and a tree that looked loaded on Sunday can be bare by Thursday. If you want jelly, pick as soon as the colour is right rather than waiting for the perfect moment. There is always plenty left for the birds; a mature tree carries well over two thousand haws.
    • Gloves and eye protection under the canopy
      Hawthorn thorns are up to an inch long, hard, and sit exactly at eye level when you are looking up into a branch. Penetrating eye injuries from Crataegus thorns are a documented hazard, and thorn punctures readily go septic. Safety glasses and a thick glove are not overcautious here.

    • Do the structural work now, in dry weather
      Winter is when you shape a specimen tree: take out dead, crossing and rubbing wood, lift the crown if you need to walk under it, and keep the centre open so it dries fast after rain. Go easy - hard pruning forces the succulent regrowth fire blight loves. Sterilize the blade between cuts and never prune a hawthorn in the wet.
    • Cut out fire blight cankers on bare wood
      Sunken dark cankers and blackened hooked shoot tips are far easier to find with the leaves off. Cut at least 8-12 inches below every visible strike into clean wood, sterilizing between every single cut, and burn or bag the prunings rather than leaving them under the plant.
    • Lay or coppice an old hedge to renew it
      A hawthorn hedge that has gone leggy and gappy can be cut almost to the ground in winter and it will regrow - this is why the plant was chosen for hedging in the first place. Traditional hedge laying part-cuts the stems and bends them over horizontally to make a living stock-proof barrier. Either way, do it in the dormant season and never in nesting season.

Fire Blight High DiseaseApr, May, Jun, Jul

A fast, destructive bacterial disease (Erwinia amylovora) of the rose family. It enters through open blossoms and soft shoot tips in warm, humid weather, then runs back down the shoot, blackening leaves and wood as though scorched and bending the tip into a telltale 'shepherd's crook'. From there it moves into limbs as dark sunken cankers, and it can kill a young tree in a single season. Apple, pear, quince, loquat, hawthorn, serviceberry and toyon are all hosts, and susceptibility varies enormously between species and between varieties.

Watch for: Sudden wilting and blackening of blossoms and shoot tips that look burned rather than diseased, shoots bent over into a hook, dark sunken cankers on limbs, and amber bacterial ooze on the bark in warm humid weather.

Prevent: Where a resistant option exists for your crop, variety choice matters more than any spray - check before you buy. Avoid heavy nitrogen and hard pruning, both of which force the soft succulent growth the bacteria enter through, and never prune or work the plant in wet weather. Keep susceptible hosts spaced apart rather than planted hard against each other, and do not prune two of them in the same wet spell.

Treat: Cut strikes out at least 8 to 12 inches below the visible damage, sterilizing the saw or pruners between every single cut, and remove and destroy the prunings rather than leaving them lying. Cut cankers out in dry dormant weather. Copper or biological sprays at bloom help in high-pressure areas - use only a product labeled for the crop you are treating, follow the label exactly, and observe the pre-harvest interval before you pick.

Crataegus is one of the most susceptible genera there is, and a hawthorn hedge is often the reservoir that reinfects nearby apples and pears each spring. Blossom is the usual entry point, so a May-flowering hedge in warm humid weather is at real risk. Trim only in dry weather, sterilize between cuts, and keep nitrogen at zero. On a long hedge you cannot cut 12 inches below every strike - take out what you can reach and accept some loss rather than shearing hard into infected wood in the wet.

Hawthorn Leaf Spot High DiseaseMay, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep

A fungal leaf-spot disease of woody rose-family plants, caused by Diplocarpon mespili (the fungus long known in its asexual stage as Entomosporium maculatum). The same pathogen causes the leaf spot that disfigures photinia, and it also attacks pear, quince, loquat, serviceberry and related hosts. Infection needs extended leaf wetness, so it flares in a wet spring and in dense, poorly ventilated plantings, and it works upward from the lowest leaves. It rarely kills an established plant, but repeated summers of early defoliation weaken it and leave a hedge looking bare and brown from midsummer onward. The fungus overwinters in fallen infected leaves and in lesions on twigs, so a planting that drops its own leaf litter around its base reinfects itself every year. Susceptibility varies enormously between species and between cultivars, and variety choice is the single most effective control.

Watch for: Small round spots on the leaves, at first reddish-purple to brown and often with a darker margin or a pale centre, appearing first on the oldest and lowest foliage. As spots multiply they run together into large dead blotches and the leaf yellows and drops. Look for a tiny dark pinhead-sized fruiting body in the centre of an older spot. Heavy leaf fall from midsummer, working up from the bottom of the plant, so that a hedge is bare below and thin above by August. Small dark lesions on green twigs in a bad year. Damage that is markedly worse on the shaded, crowded, slow-drying side of a planting, and worse in a wet spring than a dry one.

Prevent: Choose a resistant species or cultivar before anything else - susceptibility differences are dramatic, and no amount of care rescues a variety that is genuinely prone. Get air moving: space plants properly, thin crowded interior growth, and avoid planting hard against a wall or fence where foliage stays wet. Water at the base rather than overhead, and never in the evening. Rake up and remove fallen leaves in late summer and again in autumn, since the fungus overwinters in that litter and a plant that sits in its own leaf fall reinfects itself every spring. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which produces flushes of the soft new foliage the spores infect most easily.

Treat: There is no cure for a spotted leaf, so treatment means reducing next year's inoculum and helping the plant carry the load. Rake and destroy fallen leaves rather than composting them, and prune out badly affected interior growth in dry weather to open the plant up. Keep an affected plant watered in drought and unstressed otherwise, since defoliation plus drought is what actually causes decline. Where a specimen is valuable and the disease is severe year after year, protectant fungicide programmes exist but must begin at bud break and be repeated through the wet spring, which is rarely practical on a hedge - use only a product labelled for the plant, and follow the label. Replacing a chronically diseased susceptible variety is usually the better answer.

The most common cosmetic complaint about ornamental hawthorns and the reason a hedge can look half-dead by August in a wet summer. Raking the leaf litter out from under the plant is the highest-value thing a home gardener can do. Variety choice matters enormously: 'Paul's Scarlet' is notoriously bad, 'Crimson Cloud' and green hawthorn 'Winter King' are markedly better, and plain seedling hedging hawthorn sits in between and generally shrugs it off.

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Hawthorn is the winter host for several aphids that spend summer on crops - rosy apple aphid among them - so a hedge next to an orchard is a launching pad each spring. On the hawthorn itself the damage is cosmetic curling of shoot tips. The reason to knock them back is fire blight: aphid feeding wounds and the soft growth they favour are exactly where the bacteria get in. Keep nitrogen at nothing and leave the ladybirds and hoverflies to it.

Japanese Beetles Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug

Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.

Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.

Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.

Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.

Crataegus sits high on the Japanese beetle preference list, and where the beetle is established a hedge can be lace-curtained across the top in a fortnight in July. A mature plant tolerates it and releafs; a young one takes a real setback. Hand-pick into soapy water in the cool of the morning, and do not hang a pheromone trap anywhere near the plant - it draws in far more beetles than it catches.

Birds find ripening fruit and seed before you do. Robins, waxwings, starlings, catbirds, jays, sparrows, finches, blackbirds, and doves all work a garden, and the pressure arrives in a narrow window - the last days before harvest, when sugar rises, color changes, and the crop softens or the grain hardens. A flock can strip a small planting in a day or two, and birds that only peck rather than take whole fruit still leave wounds that rot or draw wasps. Squirrels, chipmunks, and other wildlife usually turn up on the same crop at the same time. This is competition rather than disease: the birds are not harming the plant, and a big tree or a heavy-cropping bush often has enough for everyone - but on a small planting it can be the difference between a harvest and none.

Watch for: Fruit disappearing from the outermost, most exposed parts of the plant first, and from the top of a tree where you cannot reach anyway. Single neat pecks and gouges in ripening fruit, with several fruits sampled rather than one eaten through - the classic sign that it was birds rather than an animal. Heads of grain or seed going visibly lighter and emptier as they ripen, with hulls and chaff scattered underneath. Freshly sown seed vanishing off the surface of a bed before it germinates. Bird traffic in and out of the plant picking up as the crop colors, and birds waiting on nearby wires and branches. Wasps arriving at the pecked and split fruit shortly afterward.

Prevent: Net, and net early. Bird netting draped over a frame or hoops so it stands off the fruit, with the edges closed at ground level, is the only thing that reliably works at harvest scale - and it has to go on before the crop starts to color, because once birds have found the food they are far harder to displace. Keep fruit trees small enough that netting them is actually feasible; that decision gets made years earlier, at planting. Bags of mesh, organza, or paper slipped over individual heads, clusters, or prize fruit protect a small crop without netting the whole plant. Then shorten the exposure: pick promptly and completely rather than leaving ripe fruit hanging as a lure, clear split and dropped fruit that draws birds and wasps alike, and where a crop can finish off the plant, harvest a little early and ripen or dry it under cover. Rake in or cover broadcast seed so it is not lying in plain view.

Treat: There is no treatment once a crop is being taken - only protection and timing, so the answer is to get netting on and to pick what is ready. Reflective tape, flash ribbon, spinners, and decoy predators do work, but only for a few days at a time: birds habituate fast, so move and rotate them and never rely on them as the main defense for a crop you care about. Cut and gather grain or seed heads a little early, at firm dough, and finish drying them under cover instead of leaving them standing for the flocks. Plant a little extra, or a decoy crop the birds prefer, and accept sharing anything that crops heavily. On a wild or foraged patch, fruit going to birds and small mammals is the point of the plant rather than a problem to solve.

Thrushes, robins and waxwings can strip a loaded hawthorn in under a week, so pick for jelly as soon as the haws colour rather than waiting. This is not really a pest problem - feeding birds is half the point of the tree - but it is the invasion mechanism: the seed passes through the gut intact and germinates far from the parent, which is exactly how C. monogyna escapes into woodland and pasture in the Pacific Northwest.

Cedar-apple rust (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae) cannot complete its life cycle on one host. It needs a juniper - almost always eastern red cedar - and a rose-family host, and it alternates between them every year. On the juniper it forms hard brown galls up to golf-ball size on the twigs; after warm spring rain each gall pushes out bright orange gelatinous horns that release spores. Those spores blow to apples, crabapples and their relatives, where they cause bright orange-yellow leaf spots and, in a bad year, early defoliation and blemished fruit. Spores from the rose-family host then blow back to junipers in late summer to start new galls. Two close relatives work the same way: cedar-hawthorn rust on hawthorn, serviceberry and pear, and cedar-quince rust, which attacks fruit and twigs rather than leaves. None of them spread juniper to juniper or apple to apple - they must have both hosts, which is what makes distance the control.

Watch for: On the juniper: hard, brown, dimpled galls the size of a marble up to a golf ball hanging on the twigs through winter, then swelling in spring rain and erupting into bright orange gelatinous horns like a sea anemone - unmistakable, and the signal that spores are being released right now. On the apple, crabapple, hawthorn or serviceberry nearby: bright yellow-orange spots on the upper leaf surface from late spring, later developing tiny black dots and then fringed tube-like growths on the underside, with heavily spotted leaves yellowing and dropping by midsummer. Blemished, spotted fruit after a wet spring.

Prevent: Distance first, resistant varieties second. The fungus must have both hosts, and infection falls off sharply with separation - a few hundred feet helps and a half mile is close to a cure - so when siting a new tree, put junipers and rose-family fruit as far apart as the property allows. In most of the eastern United States red cedars are so common that removing yours will not clear the air, so anyone wanting apples in rust country should choose resistant varieties rather than counting on removal. Where you own the junipers and the orchard matters more, take them out. Keep canopies open so leaves dry quickly, since infection needs extended spring wetness.

Treat: On the juniper side, cut the woody galls out in late winter, before warm rain makes them push out spore horns - an hour with loppers measurably lowers local pressure. The galls do little harm to the juniper itself, so this is done for the neighborhood's apples rather than for the cedar. On the rose-family host there is no cure for an infected leaf: rake and destroy fallen spotted leaves, and where the disease is severe, protectant fungicide programs timed from pink bud through several weeks after petal fall are used, but they must start before infection and be repeated. On a home tree the honest answer is usually a resistant variety and tolerance rather than a spray schedule.

The hawthorn form of this rust group is properly cedar-hawthorn rust (Gymnosporangium globosum), and the management is identical: it must alternate with juniper or eastern red cedar, so distance from cedars is the whole control. Bright orange leaf spots from late spring, sometimes with small tubes on the underside. Usually cosmetic on an established plant but it can defoliate a young hedge by August. No spray is worth running on a hedge.

Cedar-Quince Rust Medium DiseaseApr, May, Jun

Cedar-quince rust (Gymnosporangium clavipes) is one of the Gymnosporangium rusts that alternate between a juniper host and a rose-family host, and it is the most damaging of them because of WHERE it attacks. Where cedar-apple rust mainly spots leaves, cedar-quince rust goes for the fruit, and on hawthorn, quince, and mayhaw it swells, distorts, and hollows out developing fruit, covering it in tufted orange-fungal growth and rendering the crop unusable. It also attacks twigs and thorns, causing swollen cankers that can girdle small wood. The fungus overwinters as a perennial gall or swelling on juniper and eastern red cedar; in wet spring weather those galls produce gelatinous orange horns that release spores, which blow to the rose-family host. It cannot spread host to host - it must have both. Distance from junipers is therefore the whole control, and a few hundred yards makes a large difference.

Watch for: Developing fruit that swells lopsidedly, distorts, and grows tufts or fine tubes of orange fungal tissue - unmistakable once seen and quite different from the flat orange leaf spots of cedar-apple rust. Swollen, cankered areas on young twigs and on thorns, sometimes girdling and killing the shoot beyond. Bright orange gelatinous horns emerging from woody galls on nearby junipers and red cedars during warm wet spells in spring - that is the spore source, and finding it tells you where the problem lives. Fruit dropping early in numbers, or coming off the tarp misshapen and hollow.

Prevent: Site the tree away from junipers and eastern red cedar. That single decision does more than everything else combined, because the fungus cannot complete its life cycle without both hosts, and spore travel drops off sharply with distance - a few hundred yards is a meaningful buffer even though spores can carry further. Where you own the junipers, removing them is the definitive fix; where a neighbor's cedar line is the source, distance and variety choice are what you have. Keep the canopy open so it dries quickly after spring rain, since infection needs extended wetness. Clean up and destroy infected fruit and prunings rather than leaving them under the tree.

Treat: There is no cure for an infected fruit or a cankered twig - remove and destroy them. On the juniper side, cutting out the woody galls in late winter before they produce spore horns reduces local pressure. Where the disease is severe and the cedars cannot be removed, protectant fungicide programs timed to bloom and early fruit development are used commercially, but they must start before infection and be repeated through the wet spring window; on a home tree the honest answer is usually siting and tolerance rather than a spray schedule.

The rust that matters if you want the haws. Unlike the leaf rusts, G. clavipes goes for the fruit and the twigs, swelling and distorting the haws into something inedible and cankering young thorny wood. Same juniper alternate host and the same fix: siting, not spraying. Pick off and destroy distorted fruit rather than leaving it under the plant.

Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.

Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.

Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.

Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.

European fruit lecanium and San Jose scale both settle on hawthorn twigs, and the first thing you usually notice is sticky honeydew and black sooty mould rather than the insects themselves. Rarely serious on a vigorous plant. A dormant-oil spray in late winter is easy on a hedge you can reach over and deals with most of it.

Junipers and eastern red cedar are the obligate alternate host for the Gymnosporangium rusts - cedar-hawthorn rust spots and drops the leaves, cedar-quince rust swells and ruins the haws. Neither fungus can complete its cycle without both hosts, so distance is a documented control and a few hundred yards makes a real difference.
PearBoth are among the most fire-blight-susceptible plants in the rose family, and a hawthorn hedge is frequently the reservoir that reinfects a nearby pear every spring. Give them distance, never prune both in the same wet spell, and sterilize tools between the two.

The responsible substitute, and often the better plant. Black hawthorn (C. douglasii) is the Pacific Northwest native that C. monogyna hybridizes with and displaces; Washington hawthorn (C. phaenopyrum) is a tough eastern species with excellent fall colour and persistent red fruit; green hawthorn (C. viridis), especially 'Winter King', is the disease-resistant landscape standard across much of the East. All give you the same thorny hedge, the same wildlife value, and haws used the same way in the kitchen, and native Crataegus species have a long parallel medicinal tradition - although note that the clinical trials were run on the European species.

Grow

Almost unkillable: any soil, sun to part shade, zones 4-8, no feeding and no watering once established. Plant bare-root whips 18-24 inches apart for a hedge, or one tree at 12-20 feet, and keep it well away from junipers and footpaths.

There is very little to say about siting a hawthorn, because it will grow almost anywhere. It handles heavy clay, thin chalk, sand, and compacted ground, tolerates exposure and coastal wind, and once its roots are down it is genuinely drought-proof. It fruits and flowers best in full sun but will grow perfectly happily in part shade, simply flowering less. The one thing it dislikes is ground that is waterlogged for months at a time. It is hardy through roughly zone 4 to zone 8, and it needs a real winter - in the hot humid lower South it is short-lived and disease-ridden.

How you space it depends entirely on what you want. For a hedge, plant bare-root whips 18-24 inches apart in a single row, or in a staggered double row about 18 inches apart for a thicker barrier - and then cut them back by half in the first winter, which is the step that makes a hedge dense at the base rather than leggy. For a specimen tree, give it 12 to 20 feet of room. Buy bare-root in the dormant season; it is a fraction of the price of container stock and establishes better.

Two decisions made at planting matter more than everything afterwards. Keep it away from junipers and eastern red cedar, which are the alternate host for the rusts that spot the leaves and ruin the fruit - there is no useful spray for a hedge, only distance. And keep it away from paths, drives and play areas. The thorns are hard, sharp, and at face height, and thorn punctures go septic readily.

Care

Feed it nothing, water it never once established, and prune only in dry weather. A formal hedge takes one or two summer cuts; an informal one is better cut every other year so it keeps enough old wood to flower and fruit.

An established hawthorn is a plant you look at rather than tend. It needs no feeding - and feeding it is actively harmful, because heavy nitrogen forces the soft succulent shoots that fire blight enters through. It needs no watering after the first two summers. The care that matters is all about when and how you cut.

Prune structurally in winter, in dry weather: take out dead, crossing and rubbing wood, keep the centre open so it dries quickly after rain, and sterilize the blade between cuts. Trim a formal hedge once or twice between late spring and late summer, finishing in early autumn. Trim an informal or wildlife hedge once, or better every other year - flowers and haws are carried on two-year-old wood, so a hedge sheared tight every year gives you a green wall and nothing else. Never trim during bloom or nesting season, and never in wet weather, which is how fire blight gets moved around a hedge on your shears.

The rest is watching. From bloom through midsummer, look for the blackened shepherd's-crook shoot tips of fire blight, orange rust spots on the leaves, and the purple-brown flecks of hawthorn leaf spot. Rake fallen spotted leaves out from under the plant rather than leaving them to reinfect it. An old, leggy, gappy hedge is not a failure - hawthorn regenerates from a hard winter cut, which is exactly why it was planted for hedging in the first place.

Harvest

Two harvests a year: flowering shoot tips of leaf and flower at peak bloom in May, and deep-red haws from mid-September. Pick the haws promptly - birds can strip a loaded tree inside a week.

Leaf and flower, May. Cut 4-6 inch flowering shoot tips when most buds on a cluster have just opened and before any blossom starts to brown. Take the top leaves and flowers together - that combination, not the flowers alone, is the traditional herbal material. Snip from around the plant rather than stripping one branch bare, work from wood you can reach without a ladder, and stop while the tree still looks untouched. The young April leaves, before the flowers, are the separate old country nibble known as 'bread and cheese' - soft, nutty and pleasant raw.

Haws, September into October. They are ready when they are fully deep red and give slightly under a squeeze; cut one open and the flesh should be yellowish and mealy around a single hard stone. The efficient method is to hold a bowl under a cluster and pull the whole bunch off, stalks and all, then pick out the stalks and leaves indoors sitting down. Expect to lose some to birds — robins, thrushes and waxwings can clear a tree in a few days — so pick as soon as the colour is right rather than waiting for perfection. Discard anything soft, brown, or swollen and distorted by rust.

Wear gloves and eye protection for both harvests. The thorns are up to an inch long, hard, and sit at exactly the height your face goes when you look up into a branch; penetrating eye injuries from Crataegus thorns are a documented and entirely avoidable hazard.

Storage

Fresh haws keep a week or two and freeze perfectly - freezing even improves the extraction. Dry leaf and flower fast in a single layer out of sun; use dried material within a year, while it still smells of something.

Haws hold in the refrigerator for a week or two, but the sensible move is to freeze them whole: rinse, drain, bag, and put them away until you have an afternoon. Freezing ruptures the cells and the fruit actually gives up its juice more readily afterwards, so nothing is lost. Frozen haws keep a year without complaint. The other storable form is the strained juice or pulp, which freezes in measured batch portions or water-bath cans by a tested recipe. Because haws are so high in pectin and acid, that juice keeps its setting power well. Finished jelly and ketchup hold for years in a cool dark cupboard.

Leaf and flower need to be dried fast or they brown and lose their scent. Spread the tips in a single shallow layer on a screen or paper somewhere warm, dark and airy, or use a dehydrator on its lowest setting, and turn them once. They are done when the leaves crumble and the stems snap. Store in an airtight jar out of light, and be honest about the shelf life: aromatic herbal material is worth using within about a year, after which it is mostly brown confetti. Dried haws keep longer but are best kept whole and broken up only when you use them.

Propagation & seed saving

Buy bare-root whips - they are cheap and it is the honest answer. From seed, expect a double dormancy and two winters in the ground; cuttings rarely work, and named cultivars are grafted.

The practical answer is to buy bare-root whips in winter. Hedging hawthorn is one of the cheapest woody plants there is, sold in bundles of 25 or 50, and a hundred whips costs less than a couple of container shrubs. That is how every hedge you have ever admired was planted.

If you want to raise your own, understand what hawthorn seed does. It has a hard stony coat and a double dormancy: it typically needs a warm period followed by a long cold one, and a good proportion of any batch will sit in the ground through two winters before germinating. Clean the pulp off completely - the flesh contains germination inhibitors - and sow into a protected outdoor seedbed in autumn, then leave it alone and do not dig it over when nothing appears the first spring. Seedlings take several years to reach planting size and many more to flower.

Cuttings are not a home method for this genus; they root poorly and unreliably. Named ornamental cultivars such as 'Paul's Scarlet' and 'Crimson Cloud' are grafted or budded onto seedling Crataegus rootstock, which is also how you would top-work an existing plant. Root suckers and layered low branches occasionally give you a free plant. One warning worth taking seriously: hawthorn self-sows enthusiastically wherever birds perch, so in the Pacific Northwest especially, seedlings you did not plant are a liability rather than free stock — pull them while small.

Nutrition

Haws are a tart, pectin-rich pome with vitamin C and a heavy load of flavonoids and oligomeric procyanidins - the same compounds behind the medicinal interest. Most of the crop ends up as jelly, so treat it as a preserve.

Haws are a typical tart pome nutritionally: a reasonable source of vitamin C, real fibre in the whole fruit, and a heavy load of polyphenols — particularly flavonoids such as vitexin and hyperoside, and the oligomeric procyanidins that standardized hawthorn extracts are measured against. They are also exceptionally rich in pectin, which is both a soluble fibre and the reason the jelly sets without help. What they are not is a fruit you eat in quantity: the flesh is thin, dry and mealy around a large stone, and almost the whole crop leaves the kitchen as jelly, ketchup or syrup, where the sugar dominates the final product.

The larger contribution is ecological, and it is substantial. A hawthorn hedge is one of the best wildlife plantings available in a temperate garden: heavy spring nectar and pollen for bees and hoverflies, dense thorny cover that small birds nest in safely, and thousands of haws that feed thrushes, robins and waxwings through early winter. Crataegus also hosts a long list of native moth and butterfly caterpillars. If you plant one thing for wildlife and want a crop from it too, this is a strong candidate — with the caveat that the same bird appetite is exactly what spreads it where it is not wanted.

In the kitchen

Haws are a jelly and sauce fruit, not an eating one: clear rose-red jelly set on their own pectin, and the famous hawthorn ketchup - a sharp, fruity brown sauce. Young May leaves are a mild salad green, and the blossom flavours cordials.

Nobody eats a handful of haws for pleasure. Raw, the flesh is thin, mealy, faintly sweet and faintly of apple, wrapped around a stone that takes up most of the fruit. Cooked and sieved, it becomes something else entirely. Hawthorn jelly is the standard: simmer the whole fruit with water until it collapses, strain it through a jelly bag without squeezing, add sugar and lemon, and it sets cleanly on its own pectin into a clear rose-to-amber preserve that is very good with cheese, cold pork and game.

The other classic, and the one worth making, is hawthorn ketchup — a genuinely excellent sharp brown sauce. Simmer haws with vinegar, sugar, salt and spices, push the pulp through a sieve, and bottle it: the result sits somewhere between HP sauce and a fruit chutney and is better than either with sausages. Beyond that, haws go into syrups, fruit leathers, country wines and a rosehip-style cordial, and dried and ground they are used as a mild spice.

The young leaves picked in April, before the blossom, are the hedgerow snack English children called 'bread and cheese' — soft, nutty and mild, and pleasant scattered through a salad. The blossom can be infused into cordials, vinegars and creams, though be warned that its scent carries a musky note that a fair number of people actively dislike. One rule runs through all of it: never crush, blend or grind the seeds. Like other rose-family kernels they are cyanogenic. Cook whole and sieve, and there is no issue at all.

Several native North American hawthorns (C. douglasii, C. phaenopyrum, C. viridis and others) were and are used in the same way, though essentially all the clinical research has been done on European C. monogyna and C. laevigata.

What the evidence actually shows. A widely cited meta-analysis pooled eight randomized trials in 632 patients with chronic heart failure and found that standardized hawthorn extract improved maximal exercise capacity by an average of about 7 watts over placebo, alongside improvements in the pressure-rate product and in symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue in NYHA class I-III disease. The most-studied preparations are the standardized extracts WS 1442 (18.75% oligomeric procyanidins) and LI 132 (2.2% flavonoids), at doses in the range of 160-1,800 mg a day, with the higher end in divided doses appearing most effective and four to eight weeks needed before any judgement. What it does not show is equally important. There is no evidence of reduced mortality or sudden death, and two later trials not in that meta-analysis — SPICE and HERB-CHF — found no benefit on their primary endpoints. This is a modest adjunct for symptoms in mild disease, never a replacement for proven heart-failure therapy, and the evidence for hawthorn in high blood pressure is thinner still.

The cautions are real, not boilerplate. Heart failure is not a condition anyone self-diagnoses or self-treats, and shortness of breath, swelling or chest symptoms need a clinician, not a hedgerow. Hawthorn interacts with the drugs the same people are usually taking: digoxin and other cardiac glycosides (hawthorn flavonoids affect P-glycoprotein, and although one interaction study found no notable effect, the standard advice is close monitoring), antiarrhythmics, and antihypertensives including ACE inhibitors, ARBs and calcium channel blockers. Additive lowering of blood pressure or heart rate with beta-blockers and nitrates is the practical worry. Reported side effects are usually mild — dizziness and vertigo most often, then nausea, palpitations, headache and fatigue — at an adverse-effect rate around 1.3% in post-marketing data. It is not recommended in pregnancy because of possible uterine stimulation, and there is not enough safety data for breastfeeding or for children. And note that a garden tea is not a standardized extract: home preparations are of unknown and variable strength, which cuts both ways. This is educational information, not medical advice. History

The hedge plant that enclosed England, the May tree of spring festivals, and a heart remedy since the Middle Ages - carried to North America as an ornamental and now naturalized, and invasive, across the Pacific Northwest.

Hawthorn is bound up with European rural history more tightly than almost any other plant. Its old name quickthorn - 'quick' meaning living - describes exactly what it was for: a living fence. During the English enclosures of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, hundreds of thousands of miles of hawthorn hedge were planted to divide open field into private holdings, and the craft of hedge laying, part-cutting and bending the stems to weave a stock-proof barrier, grew up around it. Much of the pattern of the English landscape is a hawthorn hedge decision made two centuries ago.

It carries an equally deep folk load. As the May tree it marked the start of summer, gave its blossom to May Day garlands, and sat at the centre of a superstition still half alive: bringing hawthorn blossom indoors was thought to invite death, a belief usually explained by the fact that the flowers contain trimethylamine and, as they age, smell faintly of decay. Solitary hawthorns were fairy trees in Ireland and were left standing in fields that were otherwise cleared. The Glastonbury Thorn, a form that flowers twice a year, has its own Christian legend attached.

Medicinally, European practitioners used hawthorn for heart complaints from at least the Middle Ages, and by the late nineteenth century it had a firm place in Irish and continental practice as a cardiac tonic - the tradition that eventually prompted the twentieth-century German clinical research on standardized extracts. Settlers carried it to North America as a hedge and an ornamental, where it did what it does everywhere and escaped: C. monogyna is now naturalized across the Pacific Northwest and listed as a noxious weed in both Washington and Oregon, hybridizing with the native black hawthorn it meets there.

Troubleshooting

Leaves spotted and dropping by August is hawthorn leaf spot; orange leaf spots are rust from a nearby juniper; blackened hooked shoot tips are fire blight; a leggy gappy hedge was never cut hard in year one.

Leaves covered in small purple-brown spots, then falling by midsummer: hawthorn leaf spot. It overwinters in the fallen leaves under the plant, so raking them out is the single most useful thing you can do. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and choose a resistant cultivar if you are planting fresh - 'Crimson Cloud' is markedly better than 'Paul's Scarlet', which is notoriously bad.

Bright orange spots on the leaves, or swollen distorted haws with orange fuzz: the Gymnosporangium rusts, which alternate between hawthorn and juniper or eastern red cedar. Look for the woody galls on the nearby cedars in spring. Distance is the only home control worth the effort; the leaf form is mostly cosmetic on a mature plant, the fruit form costs you the crop.

Shoot tips suddenly black, curled into a hook, with amber ooze: fire blight. Cut 8-12 inches below each strike in dry weather, sterilize between every cut, and destroy the wood. Then stop feeding and stop hard-pruning, both of which invite it back.

The hedge is leggy and bare at the bottom: almost always because it was not cut back hard in its first winter. You can fix it - cut the whole hedge back severely in the dormant season and let it regrow from the base. Hawthorn takes this treatment better than nearly any other hedge plant.

Flowers but no haws, or no flowers at all: either the plant is too young (3-8 years is normal before it fruits), or it is being sheared every year and losing the two-year-old wood that flowers, or a double-flowered ornamental cultivar was planted, which sets little or no fruit by design.

Foliage skeletonized in July: Japanese beetles, which rate Crataegus highly. Hand-pick in the morning; do not hang a pheromone trap anywhere near the plant.

Seedlings everywhere: birds. Pull them while small, especially anywhere in the Pacific Northwest.

Growing across climates

Reliable through zones 4-8 and indifferent to soil, wind and drought. It needs a real winter, struggles with heat and humidity in the lower South, and in the Pacific Northwest it grows so well that it is a listed noxious weed - plant a native hawthorn there instead.

Zones 5-7: the comfort zone, and where hawthorn is essentially a plant-and-forget hedge. Cold hardy, drought tolerant once rooted, and untroubled by wind, exposure or poor soil. Zone 4: workable at the cold edge; the wood is hardy but young plants can heave out of the ground over a hard winter, so plant in spring rather than autumn and mulch the row.

Zone 8: fine in the drier and milder parts, but disease pressure rises sharply with summer heat and humidity. Fire blight and leaf spot are both worse in warm wet weather, so give it maximum airflow, cut only in dry spells, and expect to lose leaves in a bad August. Zone 9 and warmer: not worth planting. It wants a real winter, and in hot humid country it is short-lived, chronically diseased, and outperformed by native southern hawthorns and by mayhaw, which is bred for exactly that climate.

The Pacific Northwest is the special case, and it runs the other way. Western Oregon, western Washington and coastal northern California suit C. monogyna so perfectly that it has escaped into oak woodland, riparian ground and pasture, forming dense thorny thickets, resprouting from cut stumps, and hybridizing with the native black hawthorn (C. douglasii). It is a Class C noxious weed in Washington, a Class B noxious weed in Oregon, and rated Limited by Cal-IPC. If you garden there and want a hawthorn, plant a native species - black hawthorn in the Northwest, Washington hawthorn or green hawthorn in the East. They give you the same hedge, the same wildlife value, the same haws, and the same traditional herbal material, without seeding into the woods behind you.
