Currant
The berries are safe and healthy. Redcurrants and white currants are tart-fresh; blackcurrants are strong-flavored and usually cooked or juiced. Note: Ribes plants (especially blackcurrant) are restricted or banned in some US states as a host of white pine blister rust - check local rules and, where required, plant only rust-immune blackcurrant cultivars. These are unrelated to the dried 'Zante currants' sold for baking, which are actually tiny grapes.
Overview
A hardy, shade-tolerant Ribes shrub (sibling to the gooseberry) grown for jewel-like clusters of tart berries; red and white currants shine in jelly and fresh, blackcurrants bring intense flavor and huge vitamin C - a cool-climate fruit, and a Ribes with legal restrictions in some states.
Currants are the gooseberry's close cousins — both are Ribes shrubs with similar culture — but they earn their own place for two reasons: they're among the most shade-tolerant fruits you can grow, and blackcurrants pack one of the highest vitamin-C contents of any fruit. A compact currant bush drips with glistening clusters (called 'strigs') of jewel-like berries in early-to-mid summer, thrives where many fruits sulk (north walls, dappled spots, cool northern gardens), and lives productively for years.
There are two camps. Red and white currants (Ribes rubrum — Red Lake, Rovada, Jonkheer van Tets, White Imperial) are bright, tart, translucent berries famous for sparkling jelly and a tangy fresh nibble; white currants are simply a sweeter, milder redcurrant. Growing across climates
A cool-climate, shade-tolerant fruit at its best in the cold North (zones 3-6); it dislikes heat and humidity toward zone 7, where its unusual shade tolerance becomes a real asset - blackcurrants are the most heat- and mildew-sensitive.
Like their gooseberry cousins, currants are a cool-climate fruit, and being honest about that matters. Zones 3-5 (cold North, cool summers): their ideal home — extremely cold-hardy (to about -35°F), productive, and easy, which is why currants are far more popular in Britain, Scandinavia, Canada, and the northern US than in the South. Zone 6: very workable, and here their standout shade tolerance becomes a genuine advantage — site them in afternoon shade with cool, moist, mulched roots and they cope with the heat far better than most fruit. Zone 7: a real challenge — summer heat stresses the shallow-rooted bush and humidity drives mildew (especially on blackcurrant), so use the shadiest, coolest, moistest spot and heat-tolerant varieties, and expect some struggle. Warmer than zone 7 / hot arid West: largely impractical — the winter chill (currants want ~800-1,000+ hours) is often short and the summer heat punishing. Within the range, red and white currants are a touch more heat-forgiving; blackcurrants are the most heat- and mildew-sensitive and the most rewarded by that cool, shaded, moist siting.

The standard method is hardwood cuttings: in late autumn, take pencil-thick sections of the current year's wood about 8-12 inches long and stick them two-thirds deep in moist soil, where most will root over winter and spring into new bushes. For blackcurrants, leave all the buds on and set them deep so several shoots arise from the base (a bushy, renewable habit is what you want); for red and white currants, rub off the lower buds to grow a cleaner single-stemmed 'leg,' matching their permanent-branch pruning. Layering a low branch also works simply.
All of these make exact clones of the parent, preserving the variety, unlike slow, untrue seed. Because currants are self-fertile, a single propagated bush fruits on its own. As always with Ribes, take cuttings only from healthy, disease-free, mildew-clean wood (and, for blackcurrants, virus-free stock, since reversion virus spreads through infected material), and mind local white-pine-blister-rust rules before propagating and spreading plants. Medicine
Blackcurrant has a genuine, research-backed nutritional-health angle - very high vitamin C plus anthocyanins studied for eye, immune, and circulatory effects, and a real wartime vitamin-C history - but it's still food-plus-promising-compounds, not a proven medicine.
Among garden fruits, the blackcurrant has one of the more legitimate food-as-health stories, so it's worth an honest look. Blackcurrants became especially woven into British and northern European culture — cassis in France, saft and cordials in Scandinavia, and jam and juice everywhere — and redcurrant jelly is a fixture of the traditional European table. The wartime British vitamin-C campaign cemented the blackcurrant's place in that country's food culture for generations.
In North America the story parallels the gooseberry's and is dominated by one disease. Currants were common in early American gardens, but in the early 20th century Ribes plants were identified as the alternate host of white pine blister rust, which threatened valuable timber pines — and blackcurrant, the most susceptible Ribes, drew the harshest response. Federal and state bans on growing currants (blackcurrant especially) followed; the federal ban ended in 1966, but a number of states still restrict them, and some allow only certified rust-immune cultivars. That regulatory legacy — not the fruit itself — is why currants, once common, became rare in American gardens, and why you must still check local rules and choose resistant varieties today.
