Catnip
This page is true catnip, Nepeta cataria: its leaves and flowers are safe for people as a mild herbal tea and safe (and famously entertaining) for cats. The ornamental catmints sold as Nepeta x faassenii are a different plant - grow those for bloom, not for the teapot. Do not give catnip tea to infants or young children - herbal infusions are not for babies, and catnip has been reported to cause sedation and lethargy in infants. Strong medicinal doses are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
Overview
The plant that makes cats blissfully silly - a tough, self-seeding perennial mint relative that's also a top pollinator plant and carries real (if fleeting) mosquito-repelling chemistry.
Catnip is best known for one thing: the compound nepetalactone in its leaves sends most cats into a rolling, purring, blissed-out frenzy for ten minutes or so before they wander off unbothered (it is harmless, and about a third of cats are genetically immune). But there is a lot more to it. Catnip is a hardy perennial member of the mint family, easy to the point of weediness, that returns for years and self-sows freely.
Beyond the cats, it earns its bed twice over: the small white-and-lavender flowers are an excellent pollinator plant, drawing bees and beneficial predatory insects, and the same nepetalactone that delights cats is a genuinely researched mosquito repellent. Grow it for your cats, for the pollinators, for a mild minty tea, and for the entertainment — just give it room, because like its mint cousins it likes to spread.
One name to keep straight: the ornamental catmints sold as 'Walker's Low' and 'Six Hills Giant' are Nepeta x faassenii, a different, sterile hybrid grown for its long violet-blue bloom. Flea Beetles Medium
Flea beetles are tiny dark beetles - often shiny black or bronze, rarely more than a couple of millimeters long - with enlarged back legs that let them spring away like fleas the moment you lean in. The adults chew countless small round pits and shot-holes through leaves, giving the foliage a peppered, buckshot-riddled look. They overwinter as adults in leaf litter, hedgerows, and crop debris, emerge hungry in spring, and are worst in warm dry spells. The damage is mostly a seedling and transplant problem: a small plant with a few leaves can be checked, stunted, or killed outright, while the same plant shrugs them off once it is large and growing strongly. Different species specialize on different plant families, so the beetles hammering your brassicas are not the ones on your nightshades. Some species also have larvae that feed on roots and tubers underground.
Watch for: Dozens of pinhead-sized round holes peppered across the leaves, thickest on the youngest, most tender growth. Tiny beetles that spring away as you brush the plants or lean in for a closer look - that jump is the identification. Seedlings that go lacy and stop growing, and transplants that sit and sulk instead of taking off. Damage heaviest in warm, dry weather and along the edge of a bed nearest weedy ground or last year's crop debris. On root crops, shallow narrow grooves or channels scarring the skin at harvest, from larvae feeding underground.
Prevent: Floating row cover or fine insect mesh, laid over the bed from the day of sowing or transplanting and sealed at the edges so nothing can walk in underneath, is the single best defense - and on the crops they favor it is close to essential. Leave it on until plants are large and growing strongly, or until flowering on anything that needs pollinating. Push growth: a well-watered, unchecked plant outgrows the damage, so the whole game is getting seedlings through their vulnerable weeks fast. Keep beds weed-free, since related weeds host the beetles alongside your crop, and clear crop debris at the end of the season where the adults overwinter. Rotate away from a bed that grew a related crop last year. Where you can, shift sowing dates - cooler-season and fall plantings often miss the peak of adult feeding entirely.
Treat: Row cover and healthy fast growth carry most crops through, and on an established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing at all. Where a young planting is genuinely being stripped, kaolin clay coats the leaves and deters feeding, and spinosad will knock the beetles back. Spinosad is acutely toxic to bees while the spray is still wet - apply it at dusk when bees are not flying, never onto plants in flower, and follow the product label. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating, and you must observe its pre-harvest interval on a crop you are picking. Yellow sticky traps are useful for telling you when the beetles have arrived. Where the damage falls on the part you eat, harvesting young often beats them outright; where you are growing for a root or a fruit, leaf damage can simply be tolerated. Larvae feeding underground cannot be reached by a foliar spray, so rotation and clean beds are what work against those.
Ironic on a plant reputed to repel them, but catnip gets its own share, heaviest on tender new growth. Established catnip outgrows light damage, and a hard cutback forces clean regrowth.
Root Rot Medium
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

Spider Mites Medium
Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.
Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.
Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.
Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.
Common on heat-stressed and indoor catnip. Shearing the clump back hard is the quickest fix - it regrows clean and the plant benefits anyway.
Powdery Mildew Low
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

The quickest start is a transplant, division, or rooted cutting set out around last frost — catnip is thoroughly cold-hardy (to around -30°F) and settles in during cool weather. From seed it is slower: surface-sow or barely cover it, since the seed needs light, and give it a week of cold stratification in the fridge first to improve germination. Start seed indoors 6-8 weeks before setting out.
Give it full sun and well-drained soil — catnip is drought-tolerant once established and actually makes a more aromatic, sturdier plant in lean soil than in rich, damp ground, where it flops and rots. Space plants 15-24 inches apart; they grow into 2-3 foot bushy clumps. One practical tip: protect a young plant from cats with a cloche or a cage of twiggy sticks until it roots, or the neighborhood cats will roll it flat before it establishes. It grows well in containers, which also contains its spreading and self-seeding.
Care

Catnip is made for drying. Cut sprigs at peak scent, then air-dry them — hang small bundles or spread leaves and flowering tops on a screen somewhere warm and airy — until they crumble, usually one to two weeks (a dehydrator on low is faster). Rub the dried leaves and flowers off the stems and store them airtight, out of light, where they hold their cat-pleasing potency and tea flavor for about a year.
Dried catnip is the currency of homemade cat toys: stuff it into fabric mice and pouches, or sprinkle it on scratching posts. For longer or stronger storage you can freeze fresh sprigs, which preserves even more of the volatile nepetalactone than drying — handy if you want maximum punch. Refresh a tired toy with a pinch of fresh-dried leaf and the cats come running again.

Catnip multiplies almost too willingly. Division is the surest route: lift a mature clump in spring or fall, pull it into rooted pieces, and replant — each becomes a full plant, and dividing rejuvenates the original. Cuttings root easily: stand a 4-6 inch sprig in water or moist mix and it grows roots in a couple of weeks.
And like its mint relatives, catnip self-sows enthusiastically — leave flowers to set seed and volunteers appear all around, which is exactly why shearing before seed set matters if you want to contain it. To save seed deliberately, let flower heads dry on the plant and collect the tiny seeds; they benefit from cold stratification and stay viable a few years. Between division, cuttings, and self-sowing, you will never buy catnip again — the real task is keeping it where you want it.

Catnip has a long, honest place in traditional herbal medicine. It was a common household tea for calm, sleep, and digestion — used for restlessness, headaches, colds, and upset stomachs, and historically even for fussy, colicky children — on the strength of the same aromatic oils that scent the plant. The evidence is traditional and gentle rather than clinical: a mild, soothing, food-level effect, best enjoyed as a relaxing tea. Strong medicinal doses are traditionally avoided in pregnancy. That colic use is history, not a recommendation: do not give catnip tea to infants or young children. Herbal infusions are not appropriate for babies, and catnip has been reported to cause sedation and lethargy in infants.
Its more remarkable, better-documented use is as an insect repellent. Laboratory research — notably a widely cited Iowa State University study — found that nepetalactone repelled mosquitoes about ten times more effectively than DEET at equal concentration in controlled tests, and more recent studies confirm catnip oil is a potent repellent. The honest caveats matter, though: nepetalactone evaporates quickly, so it doesn't last on skin the way DEET formulations do, and no catnip skin repellent has the field-trial record of the standard actives — the impressive lab numbers haven't yet become a practical bug spray. Crushing fresh leaves on your skin gives a real but short-lived effect. Treat that as a garden novelty rather than protection: where mosquito-borne illness is a concern (West Nile, and regionally EEE), use a CDC/EPA-recommended repellent — DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. It is a genuine, promising repellent chemistry, described accurately: strong in the lab, fleeting in the field.

Its species name cataria and the common name both nod to that feline reputation, recorded since antiquity, but for most of its history the plant was a practical physic-garden staple. The town of Nepeti in Italy is one proposed source of the genus name Nepeta.

Growing across climates
Extremely cold-hardy and easy across most zones; heat, humidity, and wet soil are the real limits, bringing spider mites and crown rot.
Zones 3-6: catnip is fully at home — hardy to around -30°F, it dies back for winter and returns reliably each spring, growing vigorously with little care and self-sowing freely. Zones 7-8: equally easy, with a longer season and a brief winter rest; shear it back in summer to fight legginess and encourage rebloom. Zones 9-10: grow it through the cooler seasons and give it good drainage and some afternoon shade — intense summer heat and humidity stress it and invite spider mites, so plant in fall to establish through the mild months. Zones 11+: possible as a cool-season and container herb with sharp drainage and shade, but persistent heat and humidity keep it stressed. Everywhere, the constants are full sun and well-drained soil: catnip shrugs off cold but resents wet feet.
Troubleshooting
Flattened plants are cats; shot-holed leaves are flea beetles; stippling and webbing are spider mites in heat; wilting in wet soil is crown rot.
Plant crushed and flattened: cats rolling on it — harmless to an established plant, but protect young ones with a cage until they root, or keep a spare plant hidden for harvesting. Tiny round shot-holes in leaves (flea beetles): common on catnip despite its pest-repelling reputation — healthy plants outgrow light damage; row cover protects young plants. Fine pale stippling and webbing (spider mites): hot, dry, dusty stress — water more, hose down the foliage, and shear back badly infested growth. Wilting despite moist soil (root/crown rot): waterlogged ground — catnip demands drainage; move it to a raised bed or container. Leggy, floppy, weak-scented plants: too much shade or rich soil, or overdue for a cutback — grow it lean and sunny and shear after bloom. Catnip everywhere: self-seeding — shear off flowers before seed sets to contain it.
