Whole grain berries simmered until they burst, then finished with milk, cinnamon, and honey into a chewy, creamy breakfast porridge topped with sauteed apples. It tastes like the grain patch in a bowl.

- 1 cup whole grain berries (wheat, rye, barley, oats, or spelt-type), rinsed, soaked overnight if you can · quinoa, rice, amaranth, millet, or buckwheat also work; see step 1 for timing
- 2 medium apples, cored and diced
- ⅓ cup toasted nuts (walnuts, pecans, or hazelnuts), chopped (optional)

- 1½ cups milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp honey · plus more for drizzling
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ tsp salt
