Overview

The beginner's cut flower and the pollinator garden's engine: sow the seed, keep cutting, and one plant blooms in wave after wave until frost.

If you grow one flower for the vase, grow zinnias. They germinate in days, bloom in about two months from seed, and — the whole trick — the more you cut, the more they bloom, right up to the first frost. Add jewel-bright color in every shade but true blue and a magnetic pull on butterflies and bees, and you have the easiest rewarding flower in the garden.

The families sort by size and use. Tall dahlia-flowered types (Benary's Giant, State Fair) at 3-4 feet are the classic cutting zinnias. Compact bedding types (Thumbelina, Short Stuff) fill borders and pots. Zinnia haageana and the disease-resistant Profusion and Zahara series stay low, shrug off mildew, and bloom without any deadheading.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

The defining zinnia disease, worst in late summer: it starts on the lower leaves and climbs while the flowers carry on above. Resistant interspecific series such as Profusion and Zahara stay clean where old-fashioned Z. elegans mildews every year, and wide spacing with base watering does the rest. Cutting flowers off healthy upper growth keeps the display going regardless.

Japanese Beetles Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug

Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.

Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.

Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.

Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.

They swarm the bright open blooms and shred them. Cut and enjoy flowers before the beetles find them - and note that zinnias can act as a decoy, drawing beetles off other plants.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Zinnias are made for direct sowing. Wait until 1-2 weeks after your last frost when soil has warmed to 70°F, then sow 1/4 inch deep — they resent cold ground and their seedlings dislike being disturbed. In short-summer climates you can start them indoors 3-4 weeks early and transplant while young. Full sun is non-negotiable for good bloom.

Thin to spacing based on your goal: 6-9 inches in cutting rows for long straight stems, 12-18 inches for airy, disease-resistant garden plants. The one power move is pinching: snip the growing tip out at 8-12 inches tall, and each plant branches into many more flowering stems instead of one central bloom.

Care

Two habits define zinnia care. First, water at the base, never overhead: zinnias are famously prone to powdery mildew, and dry foliage plus good spacing is your best defense. Water deeply about once a week; they tolerate some drought but bloom best kept evenly moist. Second, keep harvesting — every cut or deadhead tells the plant to make more flowers.

Powdery mildew almost always arrives by late summer, especially in humidity. It rarely kills the plant, just whitens the lower leaves; improve airflow, strip the worst foliage, and consider a mildew-resistant series (Profusion, Zahara) if it plagues you every year. Skip heavy feeding — zinnias bloom fine in average soil.

Harvest

Cut deep and often; the wiggle test tells you a stem is ready, and cutting is what keeps them blooming.

Harvest is both the reward and the maintenance. Cut stems in the cool morning, going deep into the plant (down to a leaf node) to encourage long new stems — short snips give you short future flowers. Use the wiggle test: grip the stem 8 inches below the bloom and give it a gentle shake; a ready flower stays stiff and upright, an unready one flops. Ready blooms last a week or more in the vase; strip the lower leaves before arranging.

The imperative is to keep cutting — even blooms you don't want should be deadheaded, because a zinnia allowed to set seed shifts out of flower production and slows down. At season's end, let a few of the best heads dry fully for seed.

Storage

Cut blooms last a week-plus in fresh water; seed keeps for years.

Zinnias are excellent vase flowers: recut stems under water, strip submerged leaves (they foul the water fast), and change the water every couple of days for a week or more of life. They don't dry well for everlasting arrangements — the petals shrivel — so enjoy them fresh. The lasting product is seed: dried thoroughly and stored cool and dark, zinnia seed stays viable 3-5 years.

Propagation & seed saving

Save the arrowhead-shaped seeds from a dried head and never buy zinnias again - open-pollinated types come true.

Zinnia seed saving is easy and rewarding. Let a few of your best blooms stay on the plant past their prime until the whole head turns brown and dry, then crumble it apart: the viable seeds are the flat, arrowhead-shaped ones attached to the base of each petal. Dry them another week and store cool and dry.

Open-pollinated and heirloom types (State Fair, the old singles, Zinnia haageana) come reasonably true. Named F1 hybrids (Benary's Giant, Profusion, Zahara) will scatter into a mix of forms and colors the next year — often a delightful surprise for a casual bed, if not for a matched cutting crop. Zinnias also self-sow where the ground stays undisturbed.

White powdery leaves (powdery mildew): the signature zinnia problem — too crowded, too humid, or watered overhead; space wider, water at the base, remove worst leaves, or grow resistant series. Short, single-stemmed plants: you didn't pinch — next time snip the tip at 8-12 inches for branching. Slowing bloom / fewer flowers: the plant is setting seed — cut or deadhead more aggressively. Chewed, ragged petals in midsummer: Japanese beetles — hand-pick into soapy water at dawn. Blackened flower buds and stem tips (bacterial or fungal blight in wet spells): remove affected growth, improve airflow. Leggy, few flowers: too little sun — zinnias need full sun.

History

Native Mexican wildflower named for botanist J.G. Zinn, bred into the giants and doubles we grow today - and the first flower grown to bloom aboard the International Space Station.

Zinnias began as a rangy Mexican wildflower with modest single flowers; the Aztecs grew them, and Spanish accounts dismissed the plant as mal de ojos ('sickness of the eye') for its plainness. It's named for Johann Gottfried Zinn, the 18th-century German botanist who first described it. Everything showy about the modern zinnia — the giant dahlia-flowered doubles, the cactus and pompon forms, the full color range — is the work of later breeders, especially through the 20th century.

A fitting footnote for such a resilient flower: in 2016 a zinnia became the first flower grown to bloom aboard the International Space Station, raised in NASA's Veggie system as part of research into growing food and plants on long missions. It is often called the first flower to bloom in space, which overshoots — Soviet cosmonauts flowered Arabidopsis aboard Salyut 7 back in 1982 — but the zinnia is the one that bloomed on the ISS, and it is still a good story.

Growing across climates

A heat-loving warm-season annual: cold zones grow one long summer crop, hot-humid zones fight mildew with resistant series and airflow.

Zones 3-6: a single generous summer crop — direct sow after frost for bloom from midsummer to the first fall freeze; the heat zinnias love is exactly what these gardens can finally offer. Zones 7-9: long, hot seasons suit them perfectly, but humidity brings powdery mildew — lean on wide spacing, base watering, and resistant series. Zones 10-11: grow in the cooler shoulders (spring and fall); the wettest, most humid stretch of summer can overwhelm even resistant types with mildew, so time plantings around it. Everywhere, zinnias are firmly frost-tender — the first freeze ends them, and they must be re-sown from seed each year (which self-sowing often handles for you).
