Vietnamese Coriander
Food-safe and eaten daily across Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore. The flavor is much stronger than cilantro, so use less. Pregnancy is the real caution: the fresh leaves are reported to have abortifacient properties and pregnant women in Vietnam traditionally avoid rau ram, so keep to ordinary garnish amounts and skip large or medicinal quantities while pregnant or breastfeeding. Medicinal-strength preparations have no established safety data, dosing or interaction studies.
The cilantro that loves heat
A sprawling tropical perennial with a peppery, lemony coriander bite, grown entirely from stem cuttings because it almost never sets seed. Hardy in the ground only in zones 10-11, it is an easy summer annual and a genuinely good houseplant everywhere else.
Vietnamese coriander (Persicaria odorata), rau ram in Vietnamese, is the herb to grow when summer heat has already killed your cilantro. It carries the same soapy-citrus coriander note but louder and hotter — peppery, faintly lemony, with an almost chili-like bite in the finish — and it produces it happily in exactly the humid, sweltering weather that makes cilantro bolt in a fortnight.
It grows as a low, sprawling tangle of jointed reddish stems, each one rooting where it touches damp ground, carrying narrow lance-shaped leaves marked with a dark maroon chevron. It is a true tropical: hardy in the ground only in zones 10-11, killed outright by frost, and grown everywhere else as a summer annual or an overwintered pot on the windowsill.
The defining practical fact is that there is no seed. Outside the tropics the plant almost never flowers, and when it does it rarely sets anything viable, so every rau ram plant in cultivation came from a cutting. Happily that is the easiest propagation in gardening: a stem in a glass of water roots in about a week.

Spider Mites High
Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.
Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.
Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.
Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.
The number one problem for a plant overwintered indoors, and the usual reason a windowsill rau ram dies in February: dry heated air suits mites perfectly while the plant itself wants tropical humidity. Check leaf undersides from midwinter on for fine stippling and webbing at the stem joints. Rinsing the whole plant in the sink every couple of weeks, standing the pot on a pebble tray, or grouping it with other plants usually prevents it outright.
Aphids Medium
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
Aphids gather on the soft new stem tips - exactly the part you harvest. Because rau ram is eaten raw, a hard jet of water into the tips a few days before cutting is the right control rather than any spray. Plants overwintered indoors are the bigger problem, since a colony builds unchecked with no predators in the house.
Slugs & Snails Medium
Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.
Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.
Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.
Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.
The wet, mulched, shaded ground this plant wants is ideal slug habitat, and the trailing stems lie flat on the soil where slugs reach every leaf without climbing. Damage is worst on a newly planted cutting, which can be erased overnight. Hand-pick after dark for the first few weeks, keep mulch pulled back from the crown, and consider raised containers in a badly affected garden - an established sprawling plant outgrows the grazing.
Whiteflies Medium
Tiny white sap-sucking insects that cluster on leaf undersides and lift off in a cloud when the foliage is brushed. They weaken growth, and the honeydew they excrete coats the leaves below in a sticky film that blackens with sooty mold. Some species also transmit plant viruses. They breed fast in warm, still, sheltered air, which is why they are far more trouble under cover and on plants overwintered indoors than on the same plant outside.
Watch for: Clouds of tiny white insects rising when you shake the plant, flat scale-like nymphs stuck to the leaf undersides, a sticky shine on the leaves below them, black sooty mold over that, and yellowing, weakened growth.
Prevent: Inspect the undersides of any new plant before it joins the others, and quarantine anything you are bringing under cover or indoors for winter. Avoid crowding and heavy nitrogen feeding, which produce the soft growth they prefer. Hang yellow sticky traps early to catch the build-up while it is still small, and encourage lacewings, ladybugs and parasitic wasps outdoors.
Treat: Hose off light infestations, then spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil onto the leaf undersides where they actually sit. Sprays do not kill the eggs, so repeat every few days for two or three weeks or the population simply rebuilds. Yellow sticky traps knock back the adults, and outdoors natural enemies usually finish the job.
An indoor and greenhouse problem rather than a garden one, and it usually arrives with the plant when you bring the pot in for winter. Check leaf undersides for the tiny white adults that fly up in a cloud when you brush the foliage, and quarantine any new plant before it joins the others on the windowsill.
Holly Leaf Miner Low
The larvae of small flies that tunnel between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, leaving winding pale trails and translucent blister-like blotches. Because the larva lives inside the leaf, sprays rarely reach it. On an ornamental or an established plant the damage is cosmetic; on a leafy crop it is a direct hit on the part you eat.
Watch for: Squiggly white or tan tunnels and translucent blister patches inside the leaves, sometimes with a tiny maggot visible when a leaf is held up to the light, and small clusters of white eggs lined up on the leaf undersides.
Prevent: Float row cover or fine mesh over the crop from sowing so the adult flies cannot reach the leaves to lay, crush egg clusters on the undersides when you find them, and clear the weed hosts nearby - lambsquarters, chickweed and wild dock are the usual reservoirs. Avoid broad-spectrum sprays, which kill the parasitic wasps that do most of the real control.
Treat: Pick off and destroy mined leaves before the larvae mature, and do not compost them - the larva is inside the mine, so removing the leaf removes the insect. Sprays rarely reach it. On a plant that regrows fast, a hard cutback forces clean new growth, and row cover then protects the fresh flush.
Occasional and essentially cosmetic - pale winding tunnels between the leaf surfaces on a few leaves. Since you harvest the tender tips and the plant regrows fast, simply pick off and bin the mined leaves. There is no case for spraying an herb eaten raw over damage this minor.
Root Rot Low
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.
Unusual here, and worth understanding, because rau ram is one of the very few culinary herbs that genuinely tolerates saturated soil and even shallow standing water - wet feet alone will not rot it. What does is cold plus wet: a pot left sitting in a full saucer on a chilly windowsill, or garden soil that stays cold and sodden below about 50F. Keep it warm if you are keeping it wet.
Powdery Mildew Low
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
Turns up late in the season on crowded, leggy plants with no air moving through them, and on indoor plants in a still corner. Cutting the plant back by a third opens it up and forces clean new growth, which beats spraying an herb you eat raw. Rarely serious enough outdoors to be worth more than that.

Not a variety but by far the most common way to acquire this plant, and worth knowing about because seed does not exist and nurseries rarely stock it. A bunch of fresh rau ram from an Asian grocery costs a couple of dollars and is, functionally, a bag of cuttings. Choose the bunch with the firmest stems and any visible white root nubs at the lower nodes, strip the leaves from the bottom of three or four stems, and stand them in a glass of water on a windowsill. Roots appear in about a week. This is how most American gardeners get their first plant.
A 4-inch pot of branching reddish stems 6-10 inches tall, usually already trailing over the rim.
The other reliable source. A handful of specialty herb nurseries and Asian plant sellers ship rooted plants in spring. It costs more than a grocery bunch but gets you an established plant and, more usefully, a correct identification - 'Vietnamese mint' and 'Cambodian mint' are used loosely in the trade and occasionally attached to unrelated plants. Check for the narrow lance-shaped leaves with the dark chevron and, most conclusively, the sharp peppery coriander smell when you rub one between your fingers.
Sprawling, jointed, reddish stems to about 15 inches, rooting at the nodes, with narrow lance-shaped leaves 2-4 inches long, mid to dark green and usually marked with a dark maroon chevron across the middle. A papery brown sheath wraps the stem at each leaf joint. Flowers, when they appear at all, are small pale-pink spikes.
There is only one Vietnamese coriander, and no named cultivars exist. Because the plant almost never flowers outside the tropics and virtually never sets viable seed, it has never been through the breeding cycle that produces varieties - every plant in cultivation is a clone propagated from cuttings, and material sold as rau ram, laksa leaf, daun kesum, Vietnamese mint or Cambodian mint is the same species. Any variation you notice between plants comes from light, water and age rather than genetics: shade-grown plants carry larger, softer, greener leaves, while sun-grown plants are smaller, redder and more pungent.
Growing Vietnamese coriander
Start with a cutting, not a seed packet. Give it heat, constant moisture and afternoon shade in hot climates, set plants about a foot apart in rich soil that never dries out, and it will sprawl into a mat in a single season.
You cannot buy meaningful rau ram seed, so growing it begins with a stem cutting — from a friend's plant, a specialty herb nursery, or, most cheaply, a bunch of rau ram from an Asian grocery. Strip the lower leaves from a 4-6 inch stem, stand it in a glass of water on a windowsill, change the water every couple of days, and it will push roots from the nodes in about a week.
Plant out only once nights are reliably above 55°F — it sulks in cold soil and dies at freezing. Give it part sun to part shade; morning sun with afternoon shade produces the biggest, most tender leaves, while all-day sun in a hot climate toughens them and turns them red. The soil rule is simple and unusual for a culinary herb: it wants to be constantly moist and never allowed to dry. This is a waterside plant that tolerates saturated ground and even a few inches of standing water, so a boggy low spot, a pot standing in a full saucer, or the shallow margin of a water garden all suit it perfectly.
Space plants about 12 inches apart in soil enriched with compost. Stems creep outward and root as they go, so one plant fills a couple of square feet in a season. It is an excellent container herb, and one of the very few culinary plants that genuinely does not mind being overwatered.
Day-to-day care
Water, water, and pinch. It asks for constant moisture, a light feed, and regular cutting back - and in any zone below 10 it needs to come indoors or be re-rooted before the first frost.
Nothing about rau ram's daily care is difficult, but the moisture is non-negotiable. A plant that dries out wilts fast and hard, and the leaves that regrow after a bad wilt are smaller and tougher. In a pot that can mean daily watering in summer, and a saucer left full is a feature rather than a fault. Mulch around garden plants to hold the damp, and feed lightly every three or four weeks with a nitrogen-leaning fertilizer for leafy growth.
Pinch the growing tips regularly. Left alone the stems run long, bare and leggy with all the leaves bunched at the ends; cutting the tips forces branching and keeps the plant dense and productive. Every month or two, cut a sprawling plant back by a third to refresh it. Because the trailing stems root wherever they touch damp soil, an established plant expands by layering itself — handy when you want more of it, and easy to pull up when you don't.
The one calendar item that really matters is frost. Below zone 10 the plant dies at the first freeze, so either lift a division into a pot in early autumn, or simply take a handful of cuttings, root them in a jar of water on the kitchen windowsill, and start again in spring.
Harvesting sprigs
Start cutting about two months after planting and then keep cutting: snip 4-6 inch sprigs above a leaf node, take no more than a third at a time, and the plant answers with more.
First harvest comes roughly two months after you set out a rooted cutting, once the plant has put out several branching stems. Harvest by snipping 4-6 inch sprigs from the stem tips, cutting just above a leaf node so the plant branches from the cut. Young leaves near the tip are the most tender and most aromatic; older leaves further down the stem get tougher and more aggressively peppery.
Take no more than about a third of the plant at once and it will regrow within a couple of weeks, all season long. This is a genuine cut-and-come-again herb, and cutting is also what stops it going leggy, so harvesting hard is good for the plant rather than a strain on it. Pick in the morning when the aromatic oils are strongest, and use the leaves fresh — the flavor is at its peak within a few hours of cutting.
Keeping the harvest
Best fresh: about a week wrapped damp in the refrigerator, or longer with the stems stood in water, which also roots them. It dries badly, but freezes acceptably chopped into oil.
Rau ram is a fresh herb through and through. Refrigerated, wrapped loosely in a damp paper towel inside a bag, it holds for about a week, sometimes ten days. The better trick is to treat a bunch like cut flowers: stand the stems in an inch of water on the counter or in the refrigerator door and they stay crisp for a week or more — and they will start rooting while they sit, so your storage jar is also your next plant.
Drying does not work. The volatile aldehydes that carry the flavor disappear almost entirely, and dried rau ram tastes of hay. Freezing is the workable route: chop the leaves, pack them into an ice-cube tray with a little neutral oil or water, and drop a cube into soups and braises. You lose the bright top notes but keep the peppery body. Honestly, though, the real storage method for this plant is a living pot on the windowsill — it costs nothing, it never goes limp, and it is always exactly as fresh as you need.
Cuttings, and only cuttings
The whole story is cuttings. It almost never flowers outside the tropics and virtually never sets viable seed, so a stem in a glass of water - rooted in about a week - is the only propagation you will ever need, or find.
This is the plant's defining trait: Vietnamese coriander does not come from seed. In temperate gardens it seldom flowers at all, and the small pale-pink spikes it occasionally throws in the tropics rarely produce anything viable. If you find 'Vietnamese coriander seed' offered online it is usually cilantro, culantro, or something else altogether. Every plant in cultivation is a clone raised from a cutting.
Which is no hardship, because it roots more willingly than almost anything else in the garden. Take a 4-6 inch stem tip, strip the lower leaves, and stand it in a glass of water in bright indirect light. Roots appear at the submerged nodes in about a week, and the cutting is ready to pot up within two. Change the water every couple of days. You can skip the glass entirely and push cuttings straight into damp potting mix or wet garden soil, which works nearly as well in warm weather.
You can also let the plant do the work: trailing stems layer themselves, rooting at every node that touches damp ground, so a rooted section can simply be severed and moved. And the cheapest start of all is the grocery store — a two-dollar bunch of rau ram from an Asian market is, functionally, a bag of cuttings, and three or four stems in a jar of water will give you all the plants you will ever need. It is the definition of never buying it again.
Nutrition
A seasoning herb used by the sprig rather than the bowlful, so it contributes little nutritionally - though the leaves carry flavonoids, carotenoids and the aldehydes behind the flavor, and let you build depth with less salt.
Vietnamese coriander is used in garnish quantities — a few sprigs torn over a salad or dropped into a bowl of soup — so its nutritional contribution is small by definition. Per weight the leaf carries a respectable load of flavonoids and carotenoids, some vitamin C, and the aliphatic aldehydes (chiefly decanal and dodecanal) that produce its coriander-like aroma. Laboratory work consistently finds strong antioxidant activity in leaf extracts, which is unremarkable for a strongly aromatic herb but real enough.
Its practical dietary value is the one that all powerful aromatics share: it lets you build enormous flavor into a dish with less salt, less fat, and less sugar. A Vietnamese herb plate is mostly leaves, and rau ram is part of the reason that food tastes as rich as it does while being, in fact, largely vegetables.
In the kitchen
The signature herb of Vietnamese chicken salad, duck and hot pot, and the laksa leaf of Malaysia and Singapore. Use it raw or added at the very end, and use less than you would cilantro.
Rau ram tastes like cilantro turned up: the same soapy-citrus coriander character, with a distinctly peppery, almost chili-like heat in the finish and a lemony edge. In Vietnam it is inseparable from ga xe phay, the shredded chicken and cabbage salad, and it goes with duck, snails, hot pot, and above all hot vit lon, the incubated duck egg, which is essentially never served without it. In Malaysia and Singapore it is daun kesum, the laksa leaf, shredded into the noodle soup that gave the herb its English name, and it turns up in nasi kerabu and asam pedas.
Two rules govern using it. Use less than you think — it is considerably stronger than cilantro and will bully a delicate dish. And keep the heat off it: unlike culantro, its aroma is volatile and largely cooks away, so it belongs raw on a herb plate, torn into a salad, or stirred into a soup in the last thirty seconds. It is superb with poultry, seafood, eggs, chili, lime, fish sauce and coconut, and a few leaves torn into a cucumber or green-mango salad transform it.
Traditional medicine, honestly
A long-standing Southeast Asian folk remedy for indigestion, gas and stomach upset, and famous in Vietnamese monastic tradition as an anaphrodisiac - but essentially no clinical evidence supports any of it. Rau ram sits in the Vietnamese kitchen and the Vietnamese medicine chest at the same time. Its traditional uses are recorded in Vietnamese herbal writing going back centuries, and it appears across Southeast Asian folk medicine in much the same roles.
Traditional uses: the most common is digestive — the leaves eaten alongside rich, raw or fermented foods, or brewed as a tea, for indigestion, bloating, gas and stomach upset. It is also recorded as a diuretic and a febrifuge, with crushed leaves applied externally for fever, vomiting, ringworm and other skin complaints, and the leaf juice used as a traditional snakebite antidote. Its most famous reputation is quite different: rau ram is a well-known traditional anaphrodisiac, and Vietnamese Buddhist monks have eaten it precisely because it is believed to dampen sexual desire and help maintain celibacy. That belief is genuinely old, widespread, and culturally important — and entirely untested.
What the evidence actually shows: very little. Laboratory studies report antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in leaf extracts, and there is preliminary interest in blood-sugar effects. But there are no controlled human trials supporting any therapeutic use, and no study has ever measured its effect on libido. Reference sources rate the evidence as insufficient across the board, and no dose has ever been established. Treat every claim here as tradition rather than demonstrated medicine.
Cautions: as food it is entirely safe and eaten daily by millions of people. Medicinal-strength preparations are another matter. The fresh leaves are reported to have abortifacient properties and pregnant women in Vietnam traditionally avoid rau ram, so pregnant and breastfeeding women should keep to ordinary culinary amounts and avoid medicinal quantities. How it got here
Native to the wet tropics of mainland Southeast Asia and cultivated so long its wild origin is blurred. Carried west by the Vietnamese diaspora after 1975, it reached American gardens through Asian groceries rather than seed catalogs.
Vietnamese coriander is native to the warm, wet lowlands of mainland Southeast Asia — Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and the Malay Peninsula — where it has been grown along pond margins and in kitchen gardens for so long that its truly wild range is hard to pin down. Vietnamese herbal tradition has long recorded it as both a seasoning and a stomach remedy, and its association with monastic diet and celibacy is old enough to be proverbial.
It travelled the way food plants usually do: with people. The Vietnamese, Cambodian and Lao diaspora after 1975 carried rau ram to California, Texas, Australia and France, where it was grown in backyards and sold in community markets long before any nursery catalog listed it. Because it cannot be shipped as seed, it spread cutting by cutting, hand to hand — which is still, today, how most American gardeners get their first plant. Botanists have meanwhile shuffled its name from Polygonum odoratum to Persicaria odorata, and you will see both on labels.
When something goes wrong
Nearly every problem is dryness, cold, or leggy growth. Wilting means it needs water; small tough leaves mean too much sun or too little food; a bare straggling plant needs cutting back hard.
Wilting, limp leaves: it is dry. This plant has no drought tolerance whatsoever and wilts within hours of the soil drying out. Water immediately and it usually recovers; repeated wilting leaves you with smaller, tougher leaves. Stand pots in a saucer of water in hot weather.
Long bare stems with leaves only at the tips: normal, and the cure is scissors. Pinch tips regularly and cut the whole plant back by a third every month or two. Too little light produces the same look, so a plant stretching indoors needs a brighter window.
Small, tough, reddish leaves: too much direct sun in a hot climate, or too little feeding. Move it into afternoon shade and give it a dilute nitrogen feed.
Plant collapsed and blackened after a cold night: frost. The top growth does not recover from a freeze; only in zone 9 and warmer does a well-mulched plant sometimes resprout from the roots. Growth stalls below 45°F, so take cuttings before the first frost every year, without fail.
Fine webbing and stippled, dusty-looking leaves indoors: spider mites, the standard winter problem for an overwintered plant in dry heated air. Rinse the foliage in the sink and raise the humidity around the pot.
It never flowers: expected, and not a problem — outside the tropics it usually won't, and you never need it to. Propagate from cuttings instead.
It is taking over the bed: the stems root wherever they touch damp ground. Pull up the rooted sections (they make excellent gifts) or grow it in a container.
Zone by zone
Perennial and vigorous only in zones 10-11; a fine summer annual in zones 7-9, and a container and windowsill herb everywhere colder. Heat and humidity are exactly what it wants, which makes it the herb for climates where Mediterranean herbs rot.
Zones 10-11: home ground. A perennial that grows year-round, spreads by layering, and asks for nothing but water. This is the only band where it truly overwinters outdoors, and the only one where you may occasionally see it flower.
Zone 9: marginal. Frost kills the top growth, but a well-mulched plant in a sheltered spot often resprouts from the roots in spring. Treat the return as a bonus rather than a plan, and keep a cutting rooting indoors as insurance.
Zones 7-8: an excellent summer annual, and a genuinely valuable one, because it produces through the July and August heat and humidity that finish off cilantro, dill and the Mediterranean herbs. Set rooted cuttings out well after the last frost, harvest all season, and take fresh cuttings in September.
Zones 3-6: a container plant, and a good one. Grow it outdoors in a pot through summer, bring it in before the first frost, and keep it on a bright windowsill through winter. It handles indoor life better than most herbs; the main enemy is dry heated air and the spider mites that come with it, so mist it, group it with other plants, or stand it on a pebble tray.
The general rule inverts the usual herb advice: heat and humidity are assets here, and drought is the enemy. If you garden somewhere sweltering and muggy where rosemary and lavender rot and cilantro bolts in a fortnight, this is the herb that will actually thrive.
