Resurrection Fern
Resurrection fern is a harmless native epiphytic fern, not toxic and not a parasite - it perches on tree bark and rock and takes nothing from its host. Its 'dead,' curled brown state is normal dormancy, not disease. It is grown as a living curiosity, not eaten; like many ferns it is not intended as food.

A little native fern that grows ON tree limbs and rocks with no soil - and performs a genuine resurrection: it curls up crispy brown and 'dead' in drought, then unfurls green within a day of rain, over and over, for decades.
Resurrection fern (Pleopeltis polypodioides) is a small, tough, and quietly astonishing native fern of the Southern woods, best known as the green carpet on the great horizontal limbs of live oaks. Like the air plants it often shares those limbs with, it is an epiphyte: it grows entirely on the surface of tree bark, fallen logs, and rocks, with no soil, gripping its perch with a creeping surface rhizome and drawing water and nutrients from rain, dew, humidity, and the crumbs of debris caught in bark crevices. It is not a moss and not a parasite - it takes nothing from the tree, using it only as a place to live.
Its superpower is in its name. In drought, resurrection fern loses the great majority of its water, curls into crispy gray-brown 'dead' fronds, and waits - through weeks, months, even years of dryness. Then rain comes, and within hours to a day it rehydrates and unfurls a fresh, flat green, apparently returning from the dead. It can repeat this cycle for decades. Beautiful, indestructible, and requiring no soil, no feeding, and essentially no care, it is one of the most rewarding native oddities you can grow on a shady limb or rock.

Like all ferns, it also reproduces from spores rather than seed. In the warm season, round rusty-brown spore dots (sori) ripen on the undersides of the fronds and release dust-fine spores to the wind, which can establish new plants on suitable damp bark and rock - a slow, natural spread that requires the right humid, shaded surface. Troubleshooting
Nearly all 'problems' are misunderstandings. Brown, curled fronds are normal dormancy, not death or disease. Real limits are simple: it needs shade and some moisture, and never wants soil.
'My fern died - it's all brown and curled!' Almost certainly it did not die. Curled, crispy, gray-brown fronds are resurrection fern's normal drought (and cold) dormancy; it will unfurl green within a day of the next good rain. Do not strip it off, drown it, or replace it - just wait for moisture. This single misunderstanding accounts for most resurrection-fern 'problems.'
It never greens up, even after rain: then it may genuinely have failed - usually from being kept in a hot, fully exposed, or chronically bone-dry spot with no rehydration for far too long, or from being buried in soil (which rots it). Move it to shade with periodic moisture and grow it on a surface, never in soil. It won't establish on a bare, smooth branch: it prefers rough, mossy, shaded bark, logs, or rock that its rhizome can grip and that holds humidity - give it a better surface. Pests and diseases: essentially none of note; it is remarkably trouble-free. In short, if it looks dead, be patient; if it truly won't revive, check that it has shade, moisture, and a surface rather than soil.
Growing across climates
Tougher and more cold-hardy than the bromeliad air plants - native across the Southeast and up the East Coast (roughly zones 6-11). Its limits are deep shade-less dryness and no surface to grip, not cold.
Resurrection fern is the hardiest of the common Southern epiphytes, ranging well beyond the humid Deep South - across the Southeast and up the Atlantic seaboard into the Northeast, and inland through the lower Midwest, roughly zones 6-11. Humid Southeast (zones 7-10): its heartland, carpeting oak limbs, logs, and rocks wherever shade and moisture meet. Up the East Coast and inland (zones 6-7): its desiccation tolerance and real cold-hardiness let it persist on shaded bark and rock through freezing winters, simply going dormant in cold and dry weather alike. Warm South (zone 10-11): thrives given shade and periodic rain or dew.
Because it can shut down and wait out both drought and cold, temperature is rarely its limiting factor. What it truly needs is a shaded, humid surface to grip and periodic moisture to revive it - so it is held back by hot, exposed, arid sites and by the absence of suitable rough bark or rock, far more than by winter cold. Give it shade, moisture, and something to live on, and it spans a remarkably wide climate.
