The cooked flesh is the food. Most varieties are rock-hard and mouth-puckeringly astringent raw - unpleasant rather than dangerous - and only a few low-astringency types are worth eating fresh. The seeds, like all pome and stone-fruit seeds, contain cyanogenic compounds: swallowing one whole is harmless, but never crush, grind or brew them. Cut the very hard fruit on a stable board with a heavy knife, taking cheeks off around the core - a slipped blade is the usual quince injury.

Overview

A small, self-fertile, late-blooming orchard tree that hands you hard golden fruit no supermarket sells: astringent raw, transformed by cooking into something fragrant, pink and full of pectin. Easy to grow, easy to prune wrong, and vulnerable to fire blight.

Quince is the fruit tree American gardens forgot. It is small (a 15-foot tree, often a multi-stemmed shrub), it is self-fertile so a single tree crops on its own, and it blooms two or three weeks after apple with big solitary pink-white flowers — late enough to sail through the spring frosts that ruin apricots. In October it hands you heavy, downy, golden fruit that perfume an entire room from a bowl on the counter.

What it will not do is let you eat it off the tree. Nearly all quinces are hard and astringent raw — not harmful, just unpleasant, like biting a green persimmon. Cooked slowly with sugar, the same fruit turns tender, fragrant, and often a startling deep pink, and because quince carries more pectin than almost any other fruit it sets jelly and paste (Spanish membrillo) without any help. A handful of modern low-astringency varieties can be eaten fresh when dead ripe; treat that as a bonus rather than the plan.

Two things to know before you plant. First, fire blight: quince is as susceptible as pear, and light pruning, low nitrogen and a dry site matter more than any spray. Second, the name: the red-flowered thorny shrub sold as “flowering quince” is Chaenomeles, a different genus. Its small hard fruit is usable in jelly, but it is not this plant — if you want fruit, buy Cydonia oblonga by its botanical name.

      Quince roots are shallow and fibrous, so a new tree dries out faster than a deep-rooted apple. Soak the whole root zone rather than sprinkling, and keep it up through the first summer - steady water in year one is the single biggest factor in establishment.

Fire Blight High DiseaseApr, May, Jun, Jul

A fast, destructive bacterial disease (Erwinia amylovora) of the rose family. It enters through open blossoms and soft shoot tips in warm, humid weather, then runs back down the shoot, blackening leaves and wood as though scorched and bending the tip into a telltale 'shepherd's crook'. From there it moves into limbs as dark sunken cankers, and it can kill a young tree in a single season. Apple, pear, quince, loquat, hawthorn, serviceberry and toyon are all hosts, and susceptibility varies enormously between species and between varieties.

Watch for: Sudden wilting and blackening of blossoms and shoot tips that look burned rather than diseased, shoots bent over into a hook, dark sunken cankers on limbs, and amber bacterial ooze on the bark in warm humid weather.

Prevent: Where a resistant option exists for your crop, variety choice matters more than any spray - check before you buy. Avoid heavy nitrogen and hard pruning, both of which force the soft succulent growth the bacteria enter through, and never prune or work the plant in wet weather. Keep susceptible hosts spaced apart rather than planted hard against each other, and do not prune two of them in the same wet spell.

Treat: Cut strikes out at least 8 to 12 inches below the visible damage, sterilizing the saw or pruners between every single cut, and remove and destroy the prunings rather than leaving them lying. Cut cankers out in dry dormant weather. Copper or biological sprays at bloom help in high-pressure areas - use only a product labeled for the crop you are treating, follow the label exactly, and observe the pre-harvest interval before you pick.

Quince is as susceptible as pear, and there are no resistant quince varieties to fall back on - so the whole defense is cultural. Keep nitrogen low, prune lightly and only in dry dormant weather, cut cankers out in winter, and remove blossom strikes the day you see them. Warm, humid springs in the South and East are the dangerous window.

Quince Leaf Blight High DiseaseMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

The defining foliage disease of quince (Diplocarpon mespili, also called Fabraea leaf spot, which likewise attacks pear and hawthorn). Small dark red-brown spots appear on the leaves in late spring, multiply and merge through a wet summer, and can strip a tree bare by August. Repeated defoliation years in a row weakens the tree, cuts the crop, and leaves shoots dying back. It can also spot and crack the fruit. The fungus overwinters in fallen infected leaves and on infected twigs, and each spring's rain splashes the spores back up into the new canopy - which is why sanitation matters so much more here than spraying.

Watch for: Numerous small dark reddish-brown to near-black spots scattered across the upper leaf surface from late spring, spreading and merging into larger blotches. Leaves yellowing around the spots and dropping early, with heavy leaf fall from midsummer in a wet year. Small dark cracked spots on the fruit skin. Twig dieback and a thin, poorly furnished canopy after several bad seasons in a row.

Prevent: Rake up and remove every fallen leaf in autumn and dispose of it away from the tree rather than composting it under the canopy - the overwintered leaves are the entire source of next year's infection. Prune to open the canopy so leaves dry quickly after rain, water at the base rather than overhead, and give the tree an open, airy, sunny site when you plant it. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which produces the soft dense growth the disease thrives in.

Treat: There is no cure for infected leaves; remove and destroy badly spotted foliage and, above all, clear the fallen leaves. In regions with wet springs, protective fungicide programs beginning at bud break are used commercially - a home grower is usually better served by sanitation, airflow and accepting some defoliation. Use only a product labeled for this crop, follow the label exactly, and observe the pre-harvest interval before you pick.

The disease you will actually see most years on quince in a humid climate, and the reason autumn leaf raking is a real job under this tree rather than a tidiness habit. Hot dry summers largely suppress it; cool wet maritime summers can defoliate a tree by August.

Codling Moth Medium PestMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

The classic 'worm in the fruit': larvae of a small gray moth tunnel in from the skin and feed at the core or kernel, packing the entry hole with sawdust-like frass and ruining the crop for keeping. The same moth works apples, pears and walnuts.

Watch for: Small entry holes ringed with brown frass, early fruit or nut drop, and a tunnel running to the seed cavity or kernel when you cut or crack a damaged one open.

Prevent: Hang pheromone traps to time any spray; gather and destroy dropped fruit and nuts promptly to break the cycle; bag individual fruits or apply kaolin clay for spray-free control.

Treat: Spinosad timed to egg hatch (the traps tell you when), or codling moth granulosis virus (CpGV) as a targeted biological. Bt does not work on codling moth - the newly hatched larva bores straight into the fruit within hours and never eats enough surface tissue to take in a dose. Use only a product labeled for the crop you are treating, follow the label exactly, and observe the pre-harvest interval before you pick. Sanitation and fruit-bagging matter more than any single spray.

Quince is a genuine host and is hit hardest where it grows alongside apples. Because quince is cooked and cut up anyway, light damage is easy to trim out - but tunnelled fruit will not store, so pick those out and use them first.

Cedar-Quince Rust Medium DiseaseApr, May, Jun, Jul

Cedar-quince rust (Gymnosporangium clavipes) is one of the Gymnosporangium rusts that alternate between a juniper host and a rose-family host, and it is the most damaging of them because of WHERE it attacks. Where cedar-apple rust mainly spots leaves, cedar-quince rust goes for the fruit, and on hawthorn, quince, and mayhaw it swells, distorts, and hollows out developing fruit, covering it in tufted orange-fungal growth and rendering the crop unusable. It also attacks twigs and thorns, causing swollen cankers that can girdle small wood. The fungus overwinters as a perennial gall or swelling on juniper and eastern red cedar; in wet spring weather those galls produce gelatinous orange horns that release spores, which blow to the rose-family host. It cannot spread host to host - it must have both. Distance from junipers is therefore the whole control, and a few hundred yards makes a large difference.

Watch for: Developing fruit that swells lopsidedly, distorts, and grows tufts or fine tubes of orange fungal tissue - unmistakable once seen and quite different from the flat orange leaf spots of cedar-apple rust. Swollen, cankered areas on young twigs and on thorns, sometimes girdling and killing the shoot beyond. Bright orange gelatinous horns emerging from woody galls on nearby junipers and red cedars during warm wet spells in spring - that is the spore source, and finding it tells you where the problem lives. Fruit dropping early in numbers, or coming off the tarp misshapen and hollow.

Prevent: Site the tree away from junipers and eastern red cedar. That single decision does more than everything else combined, because the fungus cannot complete its life cycle without both hosts, and spore travel drops off sharply with distance - a few hundred yards is a meaningful buffer even though spores can carry further. Where you own the junipers, removing them is the definitive fix; where a neighbor's cedar line is the source, distance and variety choice are what you have. Keep the canopy open so it dries quickly after spring rain, since infection needs extended wetness. Clean up and destroy infected fruit and prunings rather than leaving them under the tree.

Treat: There is no cure for an infected fruit or a cankered twig - remove and destroy them. On the juniper side, cutting out the woody galls in late winter before they produce spore horns reduces local pressure. Where the disease is severe and the cedars cannot be removed, protectant fungicide programs timed to bloom and early fruit development are used commercially, but they must start before infection and be repeated through the wet spring window; on a home tree the honest answer is usually siting and tolerance rather than a spray schedule.

Quince is one of this rust's named primary hosts and is hit harder than apple, because it deforms and hollows the fruit rather than just spotting the leaves. Severity here is conditional: with no juniper or eastern red cedar within a few hundred yards you may never see it, and surrounded by red cedar you should expect to lose fruit most years. Plan the tree's position accordingly.

Aphids Low PestApr, May, Jun

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Mostly a young-tree problem on quince, and worst on the soft growth that follows heavy pruning or a nitrogen feed - which is another reason to go easy on both. Mature trees shrug it off.

It needs a long hot summer to develop that quality, so it is a Western and Southern variety rather than a northern one, and it can be hard to find - expect to order from a specialist.

Grow

Full sun, ground that stays moist without being swampy, and one tree is enough - it needs no pollen partner. Keep it away from junipers, go easy on nitrogen, and give the shallow roots mulch and steady water.

Buy a named variety, grafted or on its own roots, and plant it dormant in early spring (or late winter in mild zones) with the graft union a few inches clear of the soil. Full sun is required for fruit that ripens; a wall or a warm south-facing corner helps in the north, where the crop has to hang on into late October. Quince is more forgiving of heavy, damp ground than pear or apple — it grows well in a moist low corner where other fruit sulks — but it will not take standing water, and its shallow, fibrous root system means it dries out quickly in a drought. Mulch it and water it in summer.

Spacing is generous for a small tree: 12 to 15 feet, more if you let it grow multi-stemmed. Feed sparingly. A quince pushed with nitrogen makes long soft shoots, and soft shoots are what fire blight races through — a mulch of compost each spring is usually all the feeding it needs. One siting decision is worth making deliberately: cedar-quince rust spends half its life on junipers and eastern red cedar, and quince is hit harder by it than apple is. Put as much distance as you can between your tree and any juniper hedge, and expect trouble if you live surrounded by red cedar.

You do not need a second tree. Quince pollinates itself, so it suits a small garden or a single space in a mixed hedge. It also takes well to container growing on a patio for a few years, and it can be trained flat against a warm wall, which is a good way to ripen fruit at the northern edge of its range.

Care

Prune lightly in late winter and never shear it - quince fruits at the tips of new growth. Thin the set, water through summer, rake up the fallen leaves, and cut out fire-blight strikes the day you see them.

The pruning rule is the one that catches people. Quince bears its fruit at the tips of shoots grown that same season, so if you shorten every shoot the way you might tidy a hedge, you cut off the entire coming crop and force a mass of soft water sprouts. Prune in late winter, take out dead, crossing and crowded wood back to a junction, open the center to light, and leave the rest alone. A quince that has been sheared over will look immaculate and fruit almost not at all.

Through the season: thin to one fruit per cluster after set, water deeply and regularly (shallow roots, early to feel drought), and pull the root suckers that come up around the base a few times a year. In autumn, rake and remove the fallen leaves — quince leaf blight overwinters in them, and sanitation is most of the control.

The disease that matters is fire blight. Watch for a shoot tip that suddenly blackens, wilts, and curls into a shepherd's crook, and cut it out 8 to 12 inches below the visible edge, sterilizing the blade between every cut. Do not do this in wet weather, do not compost the prunings, and do not respond to an outbreak by fertilizing the tree. After that, the two things you will actually see most years are quince leaf blight, which spots the leaves and can strip the tree by August in a wet summer, and cedar-quince rust, which distorts the fruit with orange spiny growths where junipers are nearby.

Harvest

Pick in mid to late autumn when the fruit is evenly gold, the down rubs off, and the tree smells of quince - and always before a hard freeze. Handle them gently; they bruise far more easily than they look.

Quince is one of the last fruits of the year, usually October into early November, and it ripens on the tree rather than off it. The cues are color and smell: wait until the last green has gone and the skin is an even deep gold, until the grey wool wipes off under your thumb, and until you can smell the tree from a few feet away. Cut a test fruit — brown seeds mean ripe. The flesh will still be rock hard, and that is correct; hardness is not a ripeness signal in quince.

Pick before the first hard freeze. Frozen fruit browns internally and will not store, so if a real freeze is forecast and the fruit is close, bring it all in and let it finish indoors. Lift and twist each quince off by hand and lay it in a single layer — for a fruit that feels like a cricket ball, quince bruises remarkably easily, and every knock turns into a brown patch that rots in storage.

A mature tree gives 50 to 100 pounds, which is a great deal of quince. Expect a few odd-shaped or rust-marked fruit; trim and cook them first, and store only the clean, unbruised ones.

Storage

Kept cool and dry, quinces hold for two or three months - but store them alone. Their perfume passes straight into anything nearby, and they should never share a crate with apples or a fridge with butter.

Store unbruised fruit in a single layer, not touching, somewhere cool, dark and humid — 32 to 40°F is ideal, and a garage, cellar or spare fridge drawer works. Handled that way they keep for two to three months, slowly deepening in color and fragrance. Check them over every couple of weeks and pull anything with a soft brown patch before it takes its neighbours with it.

The quirk worth planning for: quince perfume travels. That extraordinary aroma passes into everything stored with it, so keep quinces away from apples and pears (whose ethylene also hurries them along) and out of a fridge with butter, cheese or milk unless you actively want quince-flavored butter. A bowl of them in a cool room is a legitimate way to scent a house, and one of the traditional uses of the fruit.

For the glut: cook it. Quince paste (membrillo, cotignac, marmelada) keeps for a year wrapped and chilled; quince jelly sets hard on its own pectin and keeps indefinitely; poached quince cans well in its own syrup; and cooked, sweetened quince purée freezes perfectly. Peels and cores are worth simmering separately for jelly stock, since that is where much of the pectin lives.

In the kitchen

Cook it long and slow and it turns from hard and white to tender and ruby pink. The highest pectin of any common fruit sets jelly and paste with nothing added, and one quince transforms a pan of apples.

Raw quince is astringent and hard, so this is a cooking fruit, and the payoff for a couple of hours on a low heat is one of the strangest and best transformations in a kitchen: the white flesh slowly turns pink, then amber, then deep ruby, and the flavor goes from harsh to floral, honeyed and faintly of pineapple and rose. Give it time — a quick simmer leaves it gritty and pale.

The classics: membrillo, the Spanish paste cut into slabs and eaten with Manchego; quince jelly, which sets on its own without commercial pectin; poached quince in wine and spice; tarte tatin and crumbles; and Persian, Turkish and Moroccan stews (khoresh beh, lamb tagines) where quince holds its shape against slow-braised meat. The single easiest use: peel, core and slice one quince into a pan of apples for pie, sauce or jelly, and the whole batch tastes of quince.

Practical notes. Peel and core it before cooking, but keep the trimmings for jelly stock. Cut flesh browns fast — drop it in acidulated water. It fights back on the board, so use a heavy knife on a stable surface and cut cheeks away from the core rather than trying to halve it through the middle. And the few low-astringency varieties sold for fresh eating are milder, not sweet like an apple; taste one before you plan a fruit bowl around it.

Troubleshooting

Blackened hooked shoots are fire blight. Spotted leaves dropping by August are quince leaf blight. Orange spiny growths on fruit mean junipers nearby. A healthy tree that never fruits has almost always been pruned wrong.

Leaves covered in dark spots, yellowing and falling by midsummer: quince leaf blight — rake and destroy fallen leaves in autumn, thin for airflow, and expect it to be worse in a wet summer. Fruit distorted with orange, spiny or hairy growths: cedar-quince rust, which alternates with junipers and eastern red cedar; remove nearby junipers if you can, or accept some losses.

A vigorous, healthy tree that flowers little and fruits less: almost always pruning. Quince fruits at the tips of the current season's shoots, so shearing or heading back all the growth removes the crop. Thin whole branches instead, and cut less. Fruit drops in July and August: drought on shallow roots — soak deeply and mulch. Fruit is small, hard and woody even in October: a short or cool season, an unripened crop, or a heavy set that was never thinned.

Suckers everywhere: normal — rub them off at the base several times a season. Brown patches spreading in storage: bruising at picking; handle gently and store in a single layer. My quince is a low thorny shrub with red flowers and small hard fruit: that is Chaenomeles, flowering quince — a different genus sold as an ornamental. Its fruit does make jelly, but it will never give you the big golden fruit above.

Growing across climates

Hardy to about zone 5 and low-chill enough for zone 9, but it needs a long, warm autumn to ripen. Hot dry summers suit it best; cool damp maritime summers bring leaf blight and unripe fruit.

Quince grows across roughly zones 5 to 9. It is hardy to about -15°F, and it needs only 100-300 chill hours, far less than apple, which is why it fruits well down into the South and in mild-winter California where high-chill pome fruit fails.

The real limit is not winter but autumn. Quince ripens very late, and it needs a long, warm, sunny run through September and October to come to full gold and full flavor. Zones 5-6: plant it in the warmest spot you have, against a south wall if possible, and accept that in a cool year the fruit will be firmer and less fragrant. Zones 7-8, especially inland and in the Mediterranean-climate West: this is quince heaven — hot dry summers ripen it beautifully and suppress the leaf diseases. Zone 9: chill is rarely the problem, but fire blight in a warm humid spring is. Cool damp maritime summers (coastal Pacific Northwest, coastal New England) are the hardest case: expect quince leaf blight to strip the tree some years and fruit that never quite ripens, and choose the most open, sunny, airy site on the property.

Wherever you are, distance from junipers and eastern red cedar changes how much rust you see, and a site with air movement changes how much leaf blight you see. Those two decisions are made once, when you plant.

Propagation & seed saving

Quince roots easily from hardwood cuttings - unusual among tree fruits, and the reason it is the classic dwarfing rootstock for pears. Seed does not come true.

Unlike most tree fruit, quince roots readily from hardwood cuttings. Take pencil-thick cuttings of the past season's wood in late autumn or winter, about 8-10 inches long, cut below a bud at the base, and sink them two-thirds deep in a sheltered nursery bed or a deep pot of gritty compost. A good proportion will be rooted by the following autumn. Layering works too: peg a low branch into the soil in spring and sever it a year later. Suckers with roots attached can be lifted and moved, provided the parent is on its own roots rather than grafted.

That easy rooting is exactly why quince matters to other fruit: Quince A and Quince C are the standard dwarfing rootstocks for pear, which is why a garden-sized pear tree usually has quince below the graft. It is worth knowing in reverse too — if a “pear” suckers from below the graft, those suckers are quince.

Seed is a lottery. Quince pips germinate readily after a few months of cold stratification, but seedlings do not come true to the parent and most produce small, poor fruit; grow them for rootstock or curiosity, not for the crop. Named varieties are otherwise propagated by grafting onto quince seedling or clonal rootstock in the usual way.

Nutrition

Very high in pectin and fiber, a fair source of vitamin C and potassium, and rich in tannins and polyphenols - but almost always eaten with a lot of sugar, which is the honest nutritional headline.

Raw quince is low in calories and unusually high in pectin, the soluble fiber that makes it set jelly; it also carries a decent amount of vitamin C, potassium, copper, and a large load of tannins and polyphenol antioxidants (those tannins are the astringency you taste). Per raw ounce it looks nutritionally similar to an apple with more fiber and more tannin.

The honest caveat is how it gets eaten. Quince paste and quince jelly are roughly half sugar by weight, and poached quince usually arrives in syrup, so the finished dish belongs with sweets rather than with fruit servings. If you want the fruit's benefits without that, cook it unsweetened or lightly sweetened as a purée and stir it into apples, porridge or yogurt — the flavor carries a long way, so a little goes further than you would expect. The seeds are not food: like all pome and stone-fruit seeds they contain cyanogenic compounds and should never be crushed or ground.

Quince has a real place in Mediterranean, Persian and Central Asian folk medicine: quince syrup and quince marmalade for sore throats and coughs, and cooked quince for unsettled digestion. The plausible part is the pectin — a soluble, soothing fiber of the same family used in commercial anti-diarrheal preparations — along with the fruit's tannins and its vitamin C. As with most fruit, this is well-chosen food rather than medicine, and nothing here treats a disease.

One traditional preparation deserves a plain warning. Quince seeds are coated in a mucilage that swells in water, and steeped whole they have been used for centuries as a demulcent gargle and eye-wash. We do not recommend making it at home: those same seeds contain cyanogenic compounds, the traditional method depends on the seeds staying completely unbroken, and there is no benefit here you cannot get more safely from honey and cooked fruit. Never crush, grind, blend or chew quince seeds, and keep the pips out of anything you put through a food processor.

History

Older in cultivation than the apple, sacred to Aphrodite, probably the golden apple of Greek myth, and the fruit that gave marmalade its name - then displaced from American kitchens by a box of commercial pectin.

Quince was domesticated in the Caucasus and northern Iran and was being grown around the Mediterranean before the apple was. It was sacred to Aphrodite, and classicists have long argued that the “golden apple” of Greek myth — the apple of discord, the fruit of the Hesperides — was a quince. Athenian law attributed to Solon had a bride eat a quince before entering the bridal chamber, and the Romans spread the tree across their empire, cooking it with honey into a preserve that Apicius records.

Its greatest linguistic legacy is a word. The Portuguese for quince is marmelo, quince paste is marmelada, and when that preserve reached England the name came with it — marmalade meant quince paste long before it meant anything to do with oranges.

Colonial American farmsteads nearly all had a quince by the kitchen door, not for dessert but as a tool: it was the household source of pectin, the thing you added to a pot of soft fruit to make it set. When boxed commercial pectin arrived in the early twentieth century the quince lost its job, and within two generations it had vanished from American gardens. It remains a staple in Iran, Turkey, the Balkans, Spain and Latin America, and it is slowly coming back here — a small, self-fertile, frost-dodging tree with a fruit nobody can buy.
