Signet types (T. tenuifolia) have edible citrus petals; French and African petals are a mild garnish at best. Eat petals only from plants you grew from seed or bought certified untreated: nursery six-packs carry systemic pesticides not approved for food, and the residue can't be washed off. Tagetes is ASPCA-listed as toxic to cats, dogs and horses (mild GI upset). Sap causes contact dermatitis, worse in sun (its thiophenes are sun-activated) - wear gloves. Not pot marigold (Calendula).

Overview

The workhorse annual of the vegetable garden: cheerful, unkillable, and the one flower with real evidence behind its pest-fighting reputation.

Marigolds are the flower gardeners plant on purpose among their vegetables. Fast from seed, tolerant of poor soil, and blooming nonstop from early summer to frost, they earn their keep on looks alone — but they're really here for a job. French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are the one companion plant with solid research behind the folklore: grown as a dense stand for a full season, they measurably suppress root-knot nematodes in the soil.

Three types cover every use. French (6-12 inches) are the compact, prolific edging and companion type. African (also called American, 18-40 inches) are the big pom-pom cut flowers and the cempasúchil of Día de los Muertos. Signet (Gem types) are lacy, small-flowered, and the ones with genuinely tasty citrus-flavored edible petals.

Spider Mites Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug, Sep

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

Marigolds are notoriously mite-prone in late-summer heat. Keep them watered and hose the undersides down through dry spells.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Marigolds often act as a decoy that pulls aphids off nearby crops, so a heavy load here is not necessarily a failure.

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

They shear off seedlings overnight, but established marigolds are largely ignored - so protect the young plants and stop there.

Gray Mold (Botrytis) Low DiseaseJun, Jul, Aug, Sep

Botrytis cinerea and its relatives - the fuzzy gray-brown mold of cool, wet, humid weather. It blights flowers and buds, rots ripening fruit, and moves into soft, aging, bruised or frost-damaged tissue through the smallest wound, coating whatever it kills in dusty gray spores. It overwinters on dead plant debris, spreads on air currents and by direct contact between touching tissue, and keeps working after harvest, which is why it also ruins fruit and bulbs in storage.

Watch for: Browned, collapsed flowers and buds; soft, water-soaked brown patches on leaves, stems or fruit; and a dusty gray-brown fuzz over the dead tissue. Rot jumping between two pieces of fruit or two petals that touch is the signature, and it often shows up again in the fridge or the storage box days later.

Prevent: Space and prune for airflow, water at the base rather than over the top, and go easy on nitrogen, which produces the soft growth it prefers. Clear dead leaves, spent flowers and rotting fruit at every pass, since that debris is where it overwinters. Handle fruit, buds and bulbs gently, because it enters through bruises, and cure and store anything you keep dry and well ventilated.

Treat: Cut out and destroy infected tissue as soon as it appears, and bag it rather than composting it. Harvest ahead of a prolonged wet spell and store the crop dry and cold. Protective fungicides help through long damp weather, but airflow and sanitation do most of the work.

Worst on the big double African types, whose dense heads hold rain until the flowers turn to gray mush. Deadhead rain-soaked blooms promptly and the plant carries on unbothered.

Powdery Mildew Low DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Mostly cosmetic on a vigorous marigold, and mostly late-season. Space generously - crowding is the main trigger.

Grow

Direct sow in warm soil after frost, or set out transplants; full sun and lean soil are all they ask.

Marigolds are among the easiest flowers to grow from seed. Sow 1/4 inch deep directly in the bed once frost danger has passed and soil has warmed to 60°F or more — they'll be up in under a week and blooming in six to eight weeks. For earlier color, start indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost, or simply buy a six-pack. Space by type: 8-10 inches for dwarf French, 12-18 for tall African.

They actively prefer lean soil and full sun. Rich, over-fertilized ground produces a jungle of foliage and few flowers. Skip the fertilizer, water at the base when the top inch dries, and pinch tall types once early to make them bushy.

Care

Deadhead often, water at the base, and don't overfeed - neglect suits them.

The single most useful habit is deadheading: pinch or snip spent blooms every few days and the plant pours energy into new flowers instead of seed, blooming hard right up to frost. Cut just above a leaf node and the stem rebranches. Water at the soil line and let the surface dry between waterings — wet foliage and crowding are what bring on powdery mildew and gray mold.

Resist feeding. Marigolds bloom best a little hungry; nitrogen buys you leaves, not flowers. In hot, dry weather watch leaf undersides for spider mites (a hose blast and better airflow usually settle them).

Harvest

Cut for the vase in the morning, deadhead for more bloom, and let a few heads dry for free seed.

African types are the cut-flower stars: harvest fully open blooms in the cool morning, cut long stems just above a leaf node, and strip the lower leaves (marigold foliage fouls vase water fast). They last a week or more indoors, pungent scent and all. Every cut, like every deadhead, tells the plant to make more.

At season's end, stop deadheading a few plants and let the flower bases swell and brown. Those are your seed heads — the payoff of an annual you never have to buy again.

Storage

Cut blooms last about a week in water; dried petals keep for dye and crafts, and seed keeps for years.

Cut marigolds hold 7-10 days in clean, frequently changed water. For longer keeping, the petals dry well: pull them from the head and spread on a screen out of sun until crisp, then store airtight — dried marigold petals are a classic natural dye (warm yellows and oranges) and a poultry-feed pigment. Saved seed, dried thoroughly and stored cool and dark, stays viable 2-3 years.

Propagation & seed saving

One of the simplest flowers to save: each spent head holds dozens of long, dark seeds that come true enough to replant.

Saving marigold seed is almost effortless and the reason you never need to buy them twice. Let a few blooms fade and dry fully on the plant until the base is papery and tan, then pull the head apart — each one holds dozens of long, black-and-cream seeds. Dry them another few days on a plate and store cool and dry.

Open-pollinated and heirloom marigolds come true; named F1 hybrids (many of the 'Series' types) will vary in the next generation, which is often half the fun in a casual bed. Marigolds also self-sow readily, so a patch left to seed frequently returns on its own the following year.

In the kitchen

Signet (Gem) petals are a genuine citrus-flavored garnish; French and African petals are edible but bland. Eat petals only from plants you grew from seed or bought certified untreated - bedding transplants carry systemic pesticide residue that can't be washed off.

Only the signet marigolds (Tagetes tenuifolia — the 'Lemon Gem', 'Tangerine Gem', 'Red Gem' types) are worth putting on a plate: their small petals have a bright, tangy citrus flavor that's excellent scattered over salads, summer drinks, and soft cheeses. Pull the petals from the bitter green base before using.

One rule before any of that reaches a plate: only eat petals from plants you grew from seed yourself, or bought certified untreated. Nursery bedding six-packs are routinely raised on systemic neonicotinoids and other products not labeled for food crops; those residues travel into the nectar, pollen, and petals and stay there for the life of the plant, and no amount of washing removes them. A marigold bought in bloom at the garden center is a decoration, not an ingredient.

French and African petals are technically edible but mostly flavorless-to-musky, useful as color rather than taste. Note the name confusion: many recipes calling for 'marigold' actually mean pot marigold (Calendula), a different plant. Skip Tagetes minuta for the kitchen — it's a different, much stronger herb.

Troubleshooting

Most trouble is too much water, too much food, or crowding; blooms fail from rich soil, mildew from wet leaves.

All leaves, no flowers: soil is too rich — stop feeding; marigolds bloom on lean ground. White powdery coating on leaves (powdery mildew): crowding and damp foliage; space wider, water at the base, improve airflow. Gray fuzzy mold on blooms (botrytis): wet weather — pick off affected flowers and deadhead diligently. Fine webbing and stippled, pale leaves (spider mites): hot and dry — blast with water, repeat. Yellowing, wilting despite watering: root rot from soggy soil — ease off water and improve drainage. Seedlings sheared off overnight: slugs — bait or patrol.

History

Native to Mexico and Central America, carried worldwide by the Spanish, and central to Día de los Muertos.

Despite the names, both 'French' and 'African' marigolds are native to Mexico and Central America. The Spanish carried Tagetes seed home in the 1500s, and from Iberia they spread across Europe, North Africa, and on to India — picking up regional names that stuck even though the plant never came from those places.

In its homeland the marigold, cempasúchil (from the Nahuatl for 'twenty flowers'), remains sacred: its scent and gold color are believed to guide the spirits of the dead home during Día de los Muertos, when marigold petals carpet altars and graves. The English name is borrowed: 'Mary's gold' belonged in medieval Europe to Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold, and was tied to the Virgin Mary long before Tagetes existed on that continent. Only after the Spanish introduction of the 1500s did the name transfer to these American flowers — which is the source of the lasting confusion between the two plants that still trips up recipes today.

Growing across climates

A warm-season annual everywhere: cold zones grow it summer-only, hot zones grow it in the cool shoulders.

Zones 3-6: a straightforward summer annual — direct sow after the last frost for bloom from midsummer to the first fall freeze, which ends it. Zones 7-9: long bloom seasons; sow spring for summer-through-fall color, and expect volunteer seedlings the next year. Zones 10-11: the enemy flips to summer heat and humidity, which brings mildew and thin flowering — grow marigolds in the cooler shoulders (late winter into spring, and again in fall) rather than mid-summer. For nematode suppression in any zone, a solid two-to-three-month stand of French marigolds worked into an infested bed does the real work, not a scattered few plants.
