Longleaf Pine
Longleaf pine is safe to grow and handle - it's an evergreen timber, restoration, and wildlife tree, not a food plant. Its needles ('pine straw') are widely used as garden mulch. The one real-world caution is fire: longleaf ecosystems are fire-dependent and prescribed burning is a specialist practice - never attempt burning near structures without training, permits, and professional guidance.

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) is the great keystone tree of the Southern coastal plain and one of the most remarkable native trees in North America. It grows tall and stately - 80 to 120 feet - with dramatic needles 8 to 18 inches long (the longest of the eastern pines) tufted at its branch tips, and big 6-to-10-inch cones. Above all it's defined by its bizarre and wonderful youth: the 'grass stage.' For its first several years a longleaf seedling looks exactly like a tuft of grass, hugging the ground while it builds an enormous taproot and grows fireproof, before suddenly 'bolting' skyward several feet a year.
That strange strategy is all about fire. Longleaf built an entire fire-dependent ecosystem - the open, park-like longleaf savanna, where frequent low ground fires keep the understory open and sunlit, supporting one of the most biodiverse plant communities on the continent (dozens of species per square meter) and specialized wildlife like the red-cockaded woodpecker and gopher tortoise. Watch for: Popcorn-like white or reddish pitch tubes on the trunk, fading yellow-then-red crowns, S-shaped galleries under the bark, and expanding 'spots' of dying trees.
Prevent: Keep trees vigorous, unstressed, and unwounded; thin dense stands to reduce competition and crowding, which fuel outbreaks.
Treat: There's no home cure for an infested tree - remove and destroy attacked trees promptly to slow spread, and consult a forester for stand-level outbreaks. Vigorous, well-spaced trees resist attack best.

Watch for: Elongated, spindle-shaped swellings (galls) on branches and stems, sometimes oozing orange spores in spring; branch dieback beyond galls and stem cankers on young trees.
Prevent: Plant rust-resistant improved stock in high-rust areas, avoid heavy oak cover near young pines, and don't over-fertilize young trees (lush growth is more susceptible).
Treat: Prune out branch galls before they reach the trunk; young trees with basal trunk galls are often best removed. Resistance and siting are the main controls, since slash pine is highly susceptible.

From seed, longleaf can be grown but is exacting: the large seeds are short-lived (they don't store well and should be sown fresh), need exposed bare mineral soil and full sun to germinate, and germinate within a few weeks in fall - after which the seedling enters its multi-year grass stage. Direct-seeding is used in restoration but is slower and chancier than planting seedlings, since competition and browsing take a heavy toll on tiny seedlings. History

Longleaf pine once dominated the Southern coastal plain, forming an open, fire-swept forest estimated at around 90 million acres from Virginia to Texas - a landscape so vast and distinctive that it defined the region. Its resin fed the naval-stores industry (turpentine, tar, pitch, and rosin were once major Southern exports, essential to wooden shipbuilding), and its strong, resinous 'heart pine' timber built much of the South and beyond.
That very value led to its collapse. Longleaf pine is a tree of the warm Southeastern coastal plain, hardy and best in zones 7-9. Zones 8-9 (Deep South and Gulf): its heartland - it thrives in heat, humidity, sandy droughty soils, and the frequent low fires of the coastal plain, forming the classic longleaf savanna. Zone 7 and the sandhills/Piedmont edge: excellent on suitable sandy, well-drained sites; it's the signature pine of the Carolina Sandhills. Cooler than zone 7: generally beyond its range - it needs the long warm season and isn't reliably hardy where winters are severe. Its real requirements are full sun, well-drained (often sandy) low-fertility soil, and, at ecosystem scale, periodic fire - not moisture or coolness. It's outstandingly drought- and heat-tolerant once past the seedling stage, and its deep taproot and fire adaptation make it one of the most resilient trees for a warming, storm- and fire-prone South. What it won't tolerate is deep shade, rich wet soil, or hard cold - so match it to a sunny, sandy, warm site and it's essentially bulletproof for centuries.
