Native to the southeastern United States, and carried by hay, seed and livestock across nearly all of the Lower 48 and into southern Canada - where it behaves as a weed rather than a wildflower.
For identification only — don't plant. Nobody plants horsenettle. It is here so you can identify it and get rid of it: a spiny, deep-rooted perennial of lawns, pastures and vegetable beds whose yellow berries poison children, pets and livestock - and whose roots make new plants every time a tiller cuts them.

Every part is toxic, and the yellow berries are the dangerous part because they look like small tomatoes at knee height. They carry solanine-type glycoalkaloids: vomiting, cramping stomach pain, diarrhoea and drowsiness, and in quantity slowed breathing and heart-rhythm changes. Children and pets are the usual cases; livestock are poisoned mostly by berries baled into hay. Call poison control for any ingestion, and a vet for an animal. Wear gloves - the prickles are sharp.

Overview

Not a nettle - a nightshade, and a hard one. Horsenettle hangs yellow berries that look like tiny tomatoes at child height, and comes back from roots three feet down that make a new plant from every piece a tiller cuts. This entry is for identifying it and getting rid of it.

Horsenettle is not a nettle. It is a nightshade — a close relative of tomato, potato and eggplant — and the prickles that earned it the name do not sting, they just draw blood. What actually matters about this plant is two things, and both of them catch people out.

The first is the fruit. From late summer it hangs glossy yellow berries about half an inch across, on bare stalks, at knee height, in lawns and paddocks and along the edges of vegetable beds. They look like small tomatoes and they are toxic, and the classic case in the poison-control literature is a child who ate a handful. Every part of the plant carries solanine-type glycoalkaloids, but the berries are what get eaten.

The second is the root. Horsenettle is a deep, creeping perennial whose fleshy roots run several feet sideways and two to three feet down, with buds all along them. That is why the two things everyone tries first both fail: pulling snaps the root and prunes the plant, and rototilling chops one plant into fifty. Getting rid of it is a two-to-four-year job of never letting it rebuild its reserves, and the timing of when you cut matters more than the tool you use.

It is genuinely native to the southeastern United States, which occasionally gets it treated as a wildflower — and bumblebees really do buzz-pollinate its flowers. But it was carried across the continent in hay, seed and livestock, and in a lawn, a hayfield or a vegetable garden it is a weed with a hazard attached. Learn the prickled leaf midrib, watch for the yellow berry, and start on the roots.

    • Recognize it: prickles on the stems AND along the leaf midribs
      Shoots come up late, well after the first spring weeds, from roots rather than from seed - so they appear in the same spots as last year, often in a rough line. Look for straight yellowish prickles on the stem and, crucially, on the midrib of the leaf on both surfaces. Leaves are alternate, oblong, 2 to 6 inches, with a few wavy lobes down each side, and feel like fine sandpaper from a coat of tiny star-shaped hairs. Nothing else in a lawn or bed is armed on the leaf vein like this.

      A young, isolated shoot can be forked out if the soil is moist and loose and you follow the root down and sideways until it ends. Get every piece: a fragment under an inch long, with one bud on it, makes a new plant. Do NOT pull - the root snaps and you have simply pruned it. Do NOT till or rotovate a horsenettle patch: chopping the root system is how one plant becomes fifty, and it is the single most common way gardeners make this weed worse.

    • A tomato flower on a prickly stalk
      Flowers are five-pointed stars about an inch across, white to pale violet, with a protruding cone of bright yellow anthers - unmistakably a nightshade flower, and near-identical to a potato or eggplant bloom. They come in small clusters off the side of the stem from early summer into autumn, and bumblebees buzz-pollinate them. Once you have seen the flower there is no doubt what the plant is.

      This is the moment worth knowing. At full bloom and early fruit, and again on fall regrowth, the plant is moving sugars DOWN into its roots - so anything systemic goes down with them. Cutting or treating in May, while it is still pushing growth upward, mostly wastes the effort. If you are mowing to exhaust it, cut every 2 to 4 weeks from first shoots until frost; one annual mowing achieves nothing at all.

      Everything that follows the flower is the hazard. In a lawn, play area, paddock or hayfield, cut the plants down before the berries form rather than waiting for a convenient day. It is far easier to remove flowers than to police ripe berries later, and berries cut into hay are the classic route to livestock poisoning.

    • Strip and bag the berries before anyone else finds them
      Fruit starts green with pale marbling, like a tiny watermelon, and ripens to a smooth glossy yellow ball about half an inch across on a bare stalk. That is what a small child sees as a tomato, and it sits at knee height. Wearing gloves, strip the berries into a bag and put them in the trash - never the compost, where the seed survives and the fruit is still findable. Then deal with the plant.
    • Check hay, paddocks and anywhere animals feed
      Grazing animals normally leave the growing plant alone because of the prickles, so pasture poisoning is uncommon. The real risk is hay: berries baled with the crop lose their spines and their bitterness cues and get eaten with everything else. The berries are the hazard that makes this plant more than a nuisance. Round, about half an inch, glossy yellow, on bare stalks at knee height from late summer until they shrivel to orange-tan on the winter stems - they look like small tomatoes, and the standard case is a child who ate several. All parts of the plant carry solanine-type glycoalkaloids, but the fruit is what gets eaten. Poisoning presents as nausea, vomiting, cramping abdominal pain, diarrhoea and drowsiness; in larger doses, depressed breathing and heart-rhythm changes are documented. Livestock are usually poisoned not in the pasture, where the prickles put them off, but from berries baled into hay.

Watch for: Glossy yellow berries at child height in lawns, play areas, paddocks and bed edges; berries dropped into turf; prickly stems and dried orange berries in bought-in hay; dead winter stalks still holding fruit.

Prevent: Cut plants down before the fruit sets rather than policing ripe berries later. Where children, pets or animals have access, strip the berries into a bag and put them in the trash - never the compost. Walk hayfields before cutting and check hay you buy in.

Treat: Call poison control for any ingestion by a person, and a veterinarian for an animal, without waiting for symptoms; photograph the plant. Remove the fruit and then work on the plant. There is no preparation that makes any part of this plant safe to eat.

Why horsenettle beats most gardeners. Its fleshy creeping roots run several feet sideways and two to three feet down, carry dormant buds along their whole length, and hold enough stored energy to rebuild the top growth repeatedly. A root fragment about an inch long, with one bud, makes a new plant. So pulling snaps the root and prunes the plant, tilling chops one plant into dozens and spreads them evenly through the bed, and a single mowing each year achieves nothing at all.

Watch for: Shoots reappearing in the same places each spring, often in rough lines; a clump of several shoots where one plant was pulled; a sudden scatter of new plants across a bed that was rotovated last season.

Prevent: Never rototill ground carrying horsenettle - mark the patches and keep the machine out. Do not move soil, hay or manure from an infested area to a clean one, and knock the mud off tillage equipment. Remove isolated new plants while they are small and single-stemmed.

Treat: Dig rather than pull, following each root to its end in moist loose soil, then check the spot every two to three weeks and remove each resprout the week it appears. In larger areas, cut every two to four weeks from first shoots until frost. Systemic herbicide works only if timed to full bloom or fall regrowth, when sugars move downward; use a product whose label lists the site and follow that label. Expect two to four years.

Not a sting - a mechanical hazard. Stiff yellowish prickles up to a quarter inch arm the stems, the leaf stalks and the midribs of the leaves on both surfaces, so there is no comfortable way to grasp the plant. Punctures from soil-borne prickles are dirty wounds, they are easy to collect while weeding barehanded or picking up cut stems, and dried prickly stems in hay are unpleasant for both handlers and livestock.

Watch for: Prickles on the leaf midrib as well as the stem - this is also the identifying feature. Dried prickly stem pieces in baled hay and in raked-up garden debris.

Prevent: Wear thick gloves and long sleeves for any work on this plant, and rake cut material rather than gathering it by hand. Keep tetanus cover current if you garden regularly on ground carrying it.

Treat: Clean puncture wounds promptly and watch them; see a clinician for anything that stays painful, swells or discharges. Bag prickly debris rather than leaving it where people or animals walk.

As a perennial wild relative of tomato, potato, pepper and eggplant, horsenettle is a documented alternate host for Colorado potato beetle and flea beetles and for several nightshade viruses and diseases. Because it is a perennial with a living root, it holds those problems through the winter in a way an annual weed cannot, so a stand at the edge of a vegetable garden quietly undoes the crop rotation you were relying on.

Watch for: Colorado potato beetle adults or larvae feeding on horsenettle at a bed edge; flea beetle shot-holing on its leaves; a nightshade crop hit hard in a garden where the rotation should have broken the cycle.

Prevent: Clear horsenettle out of and around beds intended for tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant a season ahead, by hand rather than by tilling, and count any nearby stand as part of the same rotation group.

Treat: Remove the plants and bag the debris rather than composting it. Treat the crop problem on its own terms, but expect it to return each year while a horsenettle stand remains within reach of the bed.

Horsenettle is a wild Solanum and a documented host for Colorado potato beetle and for nightshade viruses and diseases, so a stand of it at the edge of a potato bed carries them from one season to the next and quietly cancels your rotation. It also makes the bed impossible to till without multiplying the weed. Clear horsenettle out of and around potato ground before you plant, by hand rather than with a rotovator.
TomatoSame family, same problems. Horsenettle hosts pests and diseases shared with tomato and overwinters as a living root right beside the bed, so it acts as a bridge between seasons. There is also a practical hazard: its yellow berries hang at picking height next to ripening tomatoes, in a bed people reach into without looking. Remove it from tomato ground first.
EggplantEggplant is the closest crop relative of all, and horsenettle is a favoured alternate host for flea beetles and Colorado potato beetle that move straight onto it. Keep eggplant beds clear of horsenettle for at least a season before planting, and count any nearby stand as part of the same rotation group.
PepperAnother nightshade sharing horsenettle's pests and viruses. The bigger issue in a pepper bed is mechanical: peppers want regular cultivation, and cultivating around horsenettle chops its roots into new plants. Clear it out first, then plant.

Grow

How to recognise it and how it moves: prickles on the stems AND the leaf midribs, sandpaper leaves, tomato-like star flowers with a yellow beak, and half-inch yellow berries. It spreads mainly by creeping roots, and by seed that survives an animal's gut.

You will not be planting this, so what follows is how to know it and how it travels — which is also how you beat it.

The plant. An erect, branching perennial, usually 1 to 3 feet and occasionally 4. Stems and leaf stalks carry straight, stiff, yellowish prickles up to a quarter inch long, and — the detail that settles it — so does the midrib of the leaf, on both surfaces. Leaves are alternate, oblong to oval, 2 to 6 inches, with two to five shallow wavy lobes down each side. Both surfaces are covered in minute star-shaped hairs that give the leaf the feel of fine sandpaper and a slightly grey cast. It emerges late in spring, well after the first flush of annual weeds, because it is coming from roots rather than seed.

The flowers are five-pointed stars about an inch across, white to pale violet, with a protruding cone of bright yellow anthers — a potato flower on a prickly stalk. They open from early summer into autumn in small clusters off the side of the stem.

The fruit is the giveaway and the hazard: round, about half an inch, starting green with pale marbling like a miniature watermelon, then ripening to a smooth glossy yellow ball, then wrinkling to dull orange-tan and hanging on the dead stems right through winter.

How it spreads. Mostly underground. Thick, fleshy, creeping roots run several feet horizontally and two to three feet down, budding new shoots along their length, so a single seedling becomes a colony without ever setting fruit. Root fragments an inch long will grow. On top of that, the seed passes intact through cattle, horses and birds and stays viable in soil for years, which is how it arrives in a clean field in bought-in hay, manure or topsoil.

What it is not. A stinging nettle has opposite, sharply toothed leaves, stinging hairs rather than prickles, and dangling green flower tassels — nothing star-shaped, nothing yellow. Black nightshade is an annual with no prickles anywhere and small dull-black berries in clusters. Bittersweet nightshade climbs, and has purple flowers and red berries. Buffalo bur (Solanum rostratum) is an annual with yellow flowers and a fruit encased in spines. Silverleaf nightshade (S. elaeagnifolium), the western counterpart, has silvery-white leaves and violet flowers and is every bit as hard to remove. Ground cherry and tomatillo wrap their fruit in a papery lantern; horsenettle berries are naked on the stalk.

Care

Control, not care - and the root system is the whole problem. Pulling snaps it, tilling multiplies it, and one mowing a year does nothing. What works is repeated cutting or a systemic treatment timed to full bloom and fall regrowth, sustained over two to four years, plus never letting a berry ripen.

Everything about controlling horsenettle follows from one fact: the plant is the root system. Fleshy creeping roots run several feet sideways and two to three feet down, with dormant buds along their whole length, and they hold enough stored energy to rebuild the top growth several times over. Anything that only removes leaves is a haircut.

What fails, and why. Pulling snaps the root at a few inches and leaves the buds behind — you have pruned it. Rototilling is actively harmful: it cuts the root system into dozens of viable pieces and distributes them evenly across the bed, and it is the commonest way a small patch becomes a whole garden. Mowing once a year does nothing; in short turf the plant simply flowers below the blade. Mulch alone fails because shoots come up through six inches of it. Flame weeding kills the top and nothing else.

What works, given time. For a small, new patch in a garden bed, fork it out when the soil is moist and loose: follow each root out to its end rather than lifting a clod, sift the soil, and take out every fragment. Then treat the spot as an appointment — check it every two or three weeks all season and remove each resprout the week it shows a leaf. That is the actual mechanism: a shoot removed before it makes surplus sugar is a net withdrawal from the root, and enough withdrawals empty it.

For a lawn, paddock or larger area, do the same thing with a mower or a string trimmer: cut every two to four weeks from the first spring shoots until frost, every year, and expect two to three seasons before the stand thins out. Smothering with an opaque tarp or heavy cardboard under six inches of mulch, left down for a full growing season, will weaken a patch but rarely finishes one — the roots run deeper and further than the cover — so plan to cut the escapes that come up round the edges.

If you use a herbicide, this is a weed where a systemic product genuinely earns its place, because you need something that travels to the roots rather than burning off leaves. Timing decides the result: apply to actively growing plants at full bloom to early fruit, or to fall regrowth, when the plant is moving sugars downward. Choose a product whose label lists the site you are treating — home lawn, pasture or hayfield, ornamental bed, non-crop area — and follow that label; the label is legally binding, not advisory. Two things are worth knowing before you buy: many pasture and hayfield products carry grazing and haying restrictions, and some of them (the aminopyralid and clopyralid family) pass through an animal's gut and survive composting, so treated hay, manure or compost can damage tomatoes, beans, peas and other sensitive garden crops for a year or more. Whatever you use, expect to repeat it over two or three seasons.

And stop the seed. Berries go into a bag and into the trash, never the compost heap and never a brush pile. Do not move soil, hay or manure off an infested area onto a clean one, and knock the mud off tillage equipment before it leaves the patch. Horsenettle is a slow problem to fix and a fast one to spread.

Troubleshooting

A child or pet that ate the yellow berries is a poison-control call. Beyond that: why pulling and tilling make it worse, why it flowers under the mower, why it is not a stinging nettle, why hay is the livestock risk, and how long control actually takes.

The poison centre decides what matters, based on the amount and the size of the person.

“Is this a stinging nettle?” No. Stinging nettle has opposite, sharply toothed leaves and stinging hairs, and dangles green flower tassels. Horsenettle has alternate lobed sandpapery leaves, stiff prickles including on the leaf midrib, star-shaped white or violet flowers with a yellow beak, and yellow berries. The prickles hurt mechanically and stop hurting when you let go.

“I pulled it and it came back worse.” Expected. The root snaps a few inches down and every bud left behind sends up a shoot, often several — so one plant becomes a clump. Dig, do not pull, and only when you can follow the root out; otherwise switch to repeated cutting.

“I tilled the bed and now it is everywhere.” Also expected, and it is the classic mistake. Tilling chops the root system into viable fragments and spreads them across the whole bed. Mark horsenettle patches and keep the tiller out of them; work them by hand or by repeated cutting instead.

“It survives my mower.” In short turf it simply flowers and fruits below cutting height. Mowing only works as a control if it is repeated every two to four weeks all season, for several seasons, so the root never gets a surplus.

“It is in my lawn - what do I actually do?” Dig out isolated plants, keep the lawn dense and mown high so seedlings struggle, and if you treat it, use a broadleaf product whose label lists home lawns, applied at full bloom or to fall regrowth, and follow the label. Plan on repeating for two or three years.

“Will it hurt my livestock?” Grazing animals mostly avoid the growing plant because of the prickles, so pasture poisoning is uncommon. The real exposure is hay: berries baled with the crop are eaten along with everything else. Walk hayfields before cutting, cut horsenettle before it fruits, and check bought-in hay for prickly stems and shrivelled orange berries.

“My tomatoes and potatoes keep getting hit.” Horsenettle is a wild relative and a known host for Colorado potato beetle and for several nightshade viruses and diseases. It bridges them from one season to the next and quietly undoes your rotation. Clear it out of and around beds growing tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant first.

“Can I eat the berries if I cook them?” No. This is not a tomato, not a tomatillo and not a ground cherry, and there is no preparation that makes it food.

“How long is this going to take?” Two to four years of consistent effort for an established stand, and it comes back if you stop early. Judge progress by shoots per square yard each spring, not by how the patch looks in August.

Growing across climates

Hardy roughly zones 4 to 9 and found in nearly every state, worst on light, dry, sandy or gravelly soils in full sun. Warmer regions get a longer flowering window and more berry crops, so control has to be repeated more often; northern winters shorten the season but never touch the roots.

Horsenettle is native to the warm Southeast but hardy far beyond it — roughly zones 4 to 9, with records from almost every state in the Lower 48 and southern Canada. Its deep roots survive winters well below what kills the top growth, so cold limits the length of its season rather than its presence.

Where it does best: full sun on light, dry, sandy or gravelly ground — overgrazed pasture, sandy vegetable soil, roadside gravel, thin lawns on poor subsoil. It is markedly less aggressive in heavy shade and in consistently wet ground, and a dense, vigorous stand of grass or crop slows it noticeably. That is a real lever: thickening thin turf and keeping pasture from being grazed to the dirt does part of the job for you.

Warm zones 7 to 9. A long season means it flowers from late spring until frost and sets several rounds of berries, so a single well-timed cut or treatment catches only part of the population. Plan on more frequent repeat cutting, and on watching for fruit right through autumn.

Temperate zones 5 to 6. The classic pattern: late emergence in May, bloom from June, yellow berries from August, dead stems holding fruit all winter. One thorough pass at full bloom plus one at fall regrowth is the efficient rhythm here.

Cold zones 4 and colder edges. Emergence is late and the season is short, which makes control genuinely easier — there are fewer weeks in which the plant can rebuild reserves. Do not mistake that for the plant being killed off; the roots are untouched and it will be back on schedule.

Everywhere, the same rule holds: the calendar shifts, the biology does not. Cut or treat when it is moving sugars to the roots, never let a berry ripen where a child or an animal can find it, and keep the tiller away.

History

A native southeastern plant that agriculture turned into a continental weed, riding in hay, seed and livestock. Its old names - devil's tomato, apple of Sodom - record what people thought of the fruit, and its abandoned folk-medicine uses are a good reason not to revive them.

Horsenettle's spread is a farming story. It is genuinely native to the sandy soils and open woods of the southeastern United States, where it was one plant among many. Nineteenth-century agriculture gave it three vehicles it had never had: seed that passes intact through cattle and horses, hay and grain moved long distances by rail, and endless disturbed, tilled, overgrazed ground of exactly the kind it prefers. Within a century it had reached almost every state, and it is now far more abundant outside its native range than in it — a reminder that “native” describes where a plant came from, not how it behaves in a hayfield in Ohio.

Its names are a record of public opinion. Devil's tomato and apple of Sodom both point at the fruit, handsome and useless; bull nettle and ball nettle at the prickles and the berry; sand brier at the soil it likes. Radical weed is the oldest and the most literal — from radix, root — and it is the one that gets the plant right.

There is an older medicinal chapter, and it is worth closing rather than reopening. In nineteenth-century American practice the berries and root were used as a sedative and given for convulsive disorders, in an era when the difference between a sedative and a poisoning was measured by outcome. That use has been abandoned, and the modern interest in the plant is industrial rather than herbal: Solanum weeds including this one are studied as sources of solasodine, a steroid precursor. Neither is a reason to make anything out of the berries in your yard. This is a plant to identify and remove.
