Leaves and flowering tops are food in Thai cooking, safe in culinary amounts; tea, powder and extract are a medicinal dose. It can lower blood sugar - additive with diabetes drugs. Animal studies show antifertility, anti-implantation and lowered thyroid hormone: avoid medicinal amounts in pregnancy, when trying to conceive, or with thyroid disease. Possible antiplatelet effect: caution with blood thinners and before surgery. Tulsi essential oil is high in methyl eugenol, not for internal use.

Overview

Tulsi: the sacred basil of India, grown for tea and medicine more than for the plate. Tougher, hotter-running and more drought-tolerant than sweet basil, it flowers all summer, dries beautifully, and self-sows with enthusiasm.

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum, still widely sold as O. sanctum) is a different plant from the sweet basil in the pesto bed, and worth its own space. Known across South Asia as tulsi, it smells of clove and pepper rather than anise, it is grown mainly for tea and medicine, and it is genuinely easier: more heat-tolerant, more drought-tolerant, and much less troubled by the downy mildew that has made sweet basil difficult in humid summers.

It is also a sacred plant. In Hindu households tulsi is grown in the courtyard, often in a dedicated raised planter, and tended and worshipped daily as a form of the goddess Tulasi. That is not decoration or folklore attached after the fact - for millions of people the plant in the pot is a deity, and it is worth knowing that when you grow one.

In the garden it behaves as a tender perennial: a short-lived shrubby plant in zones 10-11, and a straightforward summer annual everywhere colder. Sow it shallow, set it out when nights hold above 50°F, pinch it once or twice, and it will hand you clove-scented leaves and flowering spikes from midsummer to frost. The catalog also carries sweet basil separately, where the Genovese, Thai and lemon types live.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

The most common way people kill holy basil, usually by treating it like a thirsty leafy annual. It comes from a monsoon climate and expects the soil to dry out between soakings, so water deeply and then wait for the top inch to dry. Containers must have real drainage holes and must never stand in a full saucer, and overwintered indoor plants need markedly less water than summer ones.

Spider Mites Medium PestJan, Feb, Jul, Aug, Dec

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

Two windows: hot dry midsummer spells outdoors, and the whole winter on plants overwintered indoors, where dry heated air suits mites perfectly. Look for fine pale stippling on the upper leaf surface and webbing in the leaf axils. Raising humidity and rinsing the foliage in the sink every couple of weeks usually prevents an indoor outbreak outright.

Whiteflies Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug, Sep

Tiny white sap-sucking insects that cluster on leaf undersides and lift off in a cloud when the foliage is brushed. They weaken growth, and the honeydew they excrete coats the leaves below in a sticky film that blackens with sooty mold. Some species also transmit plant viruses. They breed fast in warm, still, sheltered air, which is why they are far more trouble under cover and on plants overwintered indoors than on the same plant outside.

Watch for: Clouds of tiny white insects rising when you shake the plant, flat scale-like nymphs stuck to the leaf undersides, a sticky shine on the leaves below them, black sooty mold over that, and yellowing, weakened growth.

Prevent: Inspect the undersides of any new plant before it joins the others, and quarantine anything you are bringing under cover or indoors for winter. Avoid crowding and heavy nitrogen feeding, which produce the soft growth they prefer. Hang yellow sticky traps early to catch the build-up while it is still small, and encourage lacewings, ladybugs and parasitic wasps outdoors.

Treat: Hose off light infestations, then spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil onto the leaf undersides where they actually sit. Sprays do not kill the eggs, so repeat every few days for two or three weeks or the population simply rebuilds. Yellow sticky traps knock back the adults, and outdoors natural enemies usually finish the job.

A recurring problem on Ocimum in greenhouses, on patio containers and on plants overwintered indoors, where they breed year-round. Tap the plant and look for a cloud of tiny white insects and for sticky honeydew on the leaves below. Yellow sticky cards plus a weekly rinse of the leaf undersides usually holds them; check any nursery plant before bringing it home.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Colonies gather on the soft growing tips and on flower spikes, where they are easy to see and easy to knock off with a jet of water. Rarely more than cosmetic on a vigorous plant. Because the flowering tops go into tea, rinse and dry harvested material rather than spraying anything on a crop you will steep and drink.

Slugs & Snails Low PestApr, May, Jun

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

Only a real threat in the first week or two after transplanting, when a single night can shear off a young plant at the base. Set out plants at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into cold damp ground, keep mulch pulled back from the stems, and hand-pick after dark until the stems toughen. Established plants are barely touched.

Japanese Beetles Low PestJun, Jul, Aug

Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.

Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.

Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.

Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.

Where they are established, adults skeletonize basil leaves through midsummer, and holy basil is not spared. Hand-pick into soapy water in the early morning while they are sluggish - it is genuinely effective on a few herb plants. Do not hang pheromone traps near the bed; they pull in far more beetles than they catch.

The most serious modern basil disease (Peronospora belbahrii), spread by windborne spores and infected seed since it reached the US in 2007. Thrives in warm, humid, wet-leaf conditions.

Watch for: Yellowing between the veins on the upper leaf surface, with a gray-to-purple fuzzy growth on the underside - easy to miss until you flip a leaf over.

Prevent: Grow resistant varieties (Prospera, Obsession, Amazel); water only at the base to keep leaves dry; give wide spacing and full airflow; avoid overhead irrigation and evening watering.

Treat: Remove and bag affected leaves immediately; harvest heavily ahead of humid spells. There is no home cure once it's established - resistance and dry foliage are the whole defense.

The great modern basil disease, and one of the best reasons to grow tulsi. Ocimum tenuiflorum is reported to be far less susceptible than sweet basil, and holy basil often stands clean beside a Genovese row that has collapsed. Not immune, though - watch for yellowing between the veins with gray-purple fuzz on the leaf undersides in a humid spell, and give plants space and morning sun so foliage dries early.

Fusarium Wilt (Basil) Low DiseaseJun, Jul, Aug

Soil- and seed-borne fungus (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. basilici) specific to basil that plugs the water vessels. Plants grow normally until 8-12 inches tall, then suddenly stunt, wilt, and streak brown.

Watch for: Sudden wilting and stunting on an otherwise healthy young plant, with brown streaking inside a split lower stem and one-sided leaf drop.

Prevent: Plant certified disease-free seed and resistant cultivars; rotate away from basil beds for 2-3 years; don't reuse contaminated soil.

Treat: None once infected - remove and trash the plant (never compost), and switch to clean seed and resistant varieties.

Primarily a sweet basil disease - the pathogen is specialized to Ocimum basilicum and holy basil is much less affected - but worth knowing if you grow the two together, since the soil-borne spores persist for years and infected sweet basil is a source. A holy basil plant that wilts suddenly with brown streaks in the lower stem should be pulled and binned, not composted.

Choose it if you want volume and the most powerful aroma, and give it real space.

Grow

Start seed shallow and warm 6-8 weeks before you plan to transplant, set plants out once nights hold above 50F, and give them full sun and moderate, well-drained soil - richer is not better.

The seed is the only fiddly part, and only because people bury it. Holy basil needs some light to germinate, so sow shallower than other basils - pressed onto the surface, or under no more than a quarter inch of fine mix. Kept damp at 65-85°F it comes up in 5-14 days; on a cold windowsill it may take three weeks or fail outright, so bottom heat is worth the trouble. Start 6-8 weeks before your transplant date, and note that the transplant date is one to four weeks after last frost, not the frost date itself.

Outdoors it wants full sun and soil that drains. Space plants 8-12 inches for cut-and-come-again picking or 12-18 inches for big bushy plants you intend to dry. Resist the urge to feed it well: a single early dose of compost or balanced fertilizer is plenty, and rich soil grows large leaves with a weak, flat aroma. Moderate soil and hard sun produce the clove scent you are growing it for.

Water deeply and then let the top inch dry. This is a plant from a monsoon climate that expects dry spells, and it will forgive drought far sooner than it forgives a soggy root ball. It is an excellent container plant, and in a big pot it is easy to carry indoors before frost.

Care

Pinch twice for a bushy plant, water deeply but rarely, feed almost not at all - and decide deliberately whether you are pinching flowers for leaves or letting them bloom for tea.

Holy basil asks for very little once it is growing. Pinch the tips when plants reach 6-8 inches and again a few weeks later: each pinch doubles the number of stems and turns a lanky spike into the dense branched plant that actually yields something. Water deeply, then wait until the top inch of soil is dry. Feed once early and then leave it alone.

The one real decision is flowering, and it splits from everything you know about sweet basil. Sweet basil turns bitter and stops producing once it blooms, so you pinch every bud. Holy basil does not go bitter, and its flowering tops are the traditional tulsi tea material - more aromatic than the leaf alone. So: pinch the spikes if you want maximum leaf for cooking, or let them bloom if tea is the point. Most growers do both, pinching part of a row and letting the rest flower for the bees, which work it relentlessly.

In zones 10-11, where frost never resets it, deadhead the spikes you are not harvesting. Holy basil self-sows freely and has naturalized in warm parts of the world; a few minutes with the shears keeps it in the bed you chose for it.

Harvest

First light cuts at 60-70 days; take a full harvest back to 4-6 inches as the first spikes open, and expect two or three full cuts from one plant before frost.

Start taking light cuts about 60-70 days from sowing, once plants are branched and 10 inches or more tall. Snip stems just above a pair of leaves - the plant branches from that cut and comes back thicker - and harvest in the early morning after the dew has dried, when the aromatic oils are at their peak and the material is dry enough to go straight onto a rack.

For a serious drying crop, wait until the first flower spikes open and then cut the whole plant back to 4-6 inches above the ground, leaving the woody base and lowest leaves. That single cut gives you the bulk of the year's tea in one go, and the plant regrows for a second and often a third full harvest before frost. A well-grown plant handles this treatment easily.

What you keep depends on what you want it for. For cooking, strip the leaves. For tea, take the whole flowering top - the spike plus the leaves just below it - which is the traditional preparation and noticeably more fragrant. Everything left over goes on the compost, and everything on the plant is fair game right up until the first frost blackens it overnight.

Storage

Unlike sweet basil, holy basil dries superbly and keeps a year in a jar. Fresh, it lasts about a week standing in water on the counter - do not refrigerate it, because basil takes chilling injury below 50F - so drying is the main way people store it.

Fresh holy basil is one of the few herbs you should not refrigerate. Like every basil it takes chilling injury below about 50°F, and a normal fridge runs at 35-40°F, so refrigerated leaves blacken within a day or two. Stand cut stems in a glass of water on the counter out of direct sun and they hold about a week. If you have no choice but the fridge, use its warmest spot, bag them loosely with a dry paper towel, and expect some darkening.

The real answer is drying, and here holy basil is far better than its sweet cousin, which dries to hay. Hang small loose bunches upside down somewhere warm, dark and airy, or spread the material on screens, or run a dehydrator at its lowest setting. Never dry it in direct sun and never rush it with heat - the clove aroma is volatile and cooks off. It is done when the leaves crumble at a touch, usually in a few days to a week.

Store the dried leaf and flowering tops whole, not crushed, in an airtight jar away from light and heat, and crumble it only as you brew. Kept that way it holds its aroma for roughly a year. It also freezes acceptably - chopped into ice cube trays with a little water or oil - which is worth doing for cooking stock even though tea is better from dried material.

Propagation & seed saving

One plant left to flower supplies more seed than you can use, and cuttings root in a glass of water in about two weeks - between the two, you never buy holy basil again.

Holy basil is one of the easiest plants in the garden to keep going forever. Let a single plant flower and set seed: cut the browning spikes into a paper bag, let them finish drying, then rub and winnow out the tiny dark seed. One plant produces thousands, and stored cool and dry the seed stays viable three to four years. Save seed only from plants you like - the tulsi types cross readily with each other, so isolate them or accept some drift. Crossing with sweet basil is far less of a worry: O. tenuiflorum and O. basilicum are different species and do not hybridize easily.

Cuttings are just as easy and give you an exact copy. Take a 4-6 inch tip cutting below a leaf node, strip the lower leaves, and stand it in a glass of water on a bright sill; roots appear in about two weeks. This is how to carry a favorite plant through winter in a cold zone - take cuttings in late summer, root them indoors, and set the young plants out the following spring.

It also self-sows, generously. In zone 9 and warmer that is a mixed blessing and the reason to deadhead; in colder gardens the volunteers that appear each spring are simply a free crop, easy to move while small. If you want to be sure of them, let a plant shatter its seed where you want next year's row.

Nutrition

Used by the cup or the pinch rather than the bowl, so it contributes essentially nothing nutritionally; what it does carry are the aromatic compounds - eugenol, rosmarinic and ursolic acids - behind both its scent and its medicinal reputation.

Holy basil is a tea and seasoning herb, taken in cupfuls of infusion or handfuls tossed into a stir-fry, so it contributes no meaningful calories, protein, or bulk nutrition to a diet. Tables listing its vitamin and mineral content per 100 grams are technically correct and practically irrelevant, since nobody eats it that way.

What the leaf genuinely carries are its aromatic and phenolic compounds: eugenol (the clove note, and the leading essential-oil constituent in most types, though composition varies a lot by chemotype and methyl eugenol is often a major companion), rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, and related terpenes and flavonoids. These have well-documented antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in laboratory work and are the compounds every claim about tulsi ultimately rests on. Content varies substantially between the tulsi types - the tropical Rama, Krishna and Vana types run considerably higher in eugenol than the compact temperate Kapoor type. Note that this is a reason to keep the distilled oil out of your mouth, not a reason to worry about the tea: see the medicine section.

In the kitchen

The basil of Thai pad krapow and of tulsi tea - peppery and clove-like, best cooked hard and fast rather than used raw, and never a substitute for sweet basil in pesto.

In the kitchen holy basil has one great dish and one great drink. The dish is pad krapow, the Thai stir-fry of minced pork or chicken with chili, garlic and fish sauce, thrown in at the very end so the leaves wilt into the pan. That peppery, clove-like bite is the whole point of the dish, and no other basil substitutes for it - Thai sweet basil (horapha) is a different flavor entirely, and the two are not interchangeable however often shops label them both 'Thai basil'.

The drink is tulsi tea: a few fresh leaves or a teaspoon of dried flowering tops steeped for five minutes, drunk plain or with honey, ginger, lemon or cardamom. It is warm, faintly peppery and slightly sweet, and it is by far the most common way the plant is consumed worldwide. Note that a daily habit of strong tulsi tea shades from a beverage into a medicinal dose - see the cautions in the medicine section.

Two practical rules. Cook it, don't scatter it raw - raw holy basil is harsh and unpleasantly sharp, and heat rounds it out, the reverse of sweet basil which you add at the last second. And don't put it in pesto: for that, grow sweet basil, which the catalog covers separately.

Traditional & historical uses

Tulsi is one of the most important herbs in Ayurveda, used as an adaptogen for stress. Modern trials are genuinely encouraging on stress and on blood glucose and lipids, but small and low-quality. Real cautions: blood sugar, pregnancy and conception, bleeding risk, thyroid - and the distilled essential oil is not for internal use. Educational only, not medical advice.

Traditional use. Tulsi is among the most revered plants in Ayurveda, where it is classed as a rasayana - a rejuvenating tonic - and taken as a daily leaf tea for stress and fatigue, coughs, colds and fevers, digestive upset, and as a general strengthener. Modern herbalism categorizes it as an adaptogen, a plant said to help the body cope with stress. It is also woven into Hindu religious life, so household use has been continuous and enormous for centuries.

What modern evidence shows. Unusually for a traditional herb, tulsi has attracted real clinical research. A 2017 systematic review found 24 human trials in about 1,100 people, using roughly 300-3,000 mg a day of leaf extract or 6-14 g of whole-plant preparation over 2-13 weeks. Results were broadly favorable across metabolic outcomes - fasting and post-meal blood glucose, HbA1c, cholesterol and triglycerides - and across stress, anxiety and mood measures, with a later meta-analysis of metabolic trials pointing the same way. But the quality was poor: only three of the 24 studies scored well for methodological rigor, most were small and short, few were properly blinded, and the research is heavily concentrated in one country. This is a promising and unusually consistent signal, not established medicine, and no regulator anywhere has approved tulsi as a treatment for anything.

What it does not show. There is no good evidence that tulsi treats infection, cancer, or any serious disease, despite a great many claims to that effect online, and the laboratory studies those claims lean on do not transfer to people.

Real cautions. Four matter. First, tulsi can lower blood sugar - which is much of why it is studied - so anyone on insulin, sulfonylureas or other glucose-lowering drugs risks additive hypoglycemia and should not add it without talking to their clinician. Second, pregnancy and conception: animal studies show antifertility, anti-implantation and abortifacient effects (attributed largely to ursolic acid), and reduced sperm count and motility in male rats, so medicinal amounts should be avoided in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and by couples trying to conceive. Third, a possible antiplatelet effect means caution alongside anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication and stopping it well before surgery. Fourth, thyroid: leaf extract lowered serum thyroxine in mice, which is why monographs advise care in thyroid disease or on thyroid medication - animal data only, but it points the opposite way to ashwagandha, so do not assume the two adaptogens behave alike.

The essential oil is a different product. Tulsi leaf and tea are one thing; distilled tulsi oil is another. It is dominated by eugenol and often carries substantial methyl eugenol, which is classed as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen and is banned as an added flavoring in the EU. Undiluted eugenol-rich oils are also hepatotoxic in overdose. Use the oil aromatically if at all; it is not for internal use, and this is the same warning sweet basil carries for estragole.

In trials at up to 2.5 g a day of leaf powder for a few months the herb was otherwise well tolerated, with occasional nausea. Culinary amounts in food are not a concern; a daily medicinal habit is a different thing. Note too that most tulsi sold as a supplement is imported Ayurvedic material, a category with a documented record of heavy-metal contamination - a point in favor of growing your own. History

Sacred to Hindus for well over two thousand years, grown in courtyards as a form of the goddess Tulasi and married ceremonially to Vishnu each autumn - and one of the pillar herbs of Ayurveda long before it became a global herbal tea.

Tulsi is not a herb that acquired religious significance; in Hindu tradition it is a deity in plant form. Sanskrit texts describe Tulasi as a goddess, and Vaishnava tradition holds that Vishnu accepts no offering without a tulsi leaf. The story most often told is that of Vrinda, whose devotion was such that she was reborn as the plant, and whose name survives in Vrindavan. Each autumn Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of the tulsi plant to Vishnu, opens the Hindu wedding season.

That belief shaped where the plant grows. Across India tulsi is planted in the courtyard, often in a dedicated raised masonry planter called a tulsi vrindavan or tulsi chaura, watered and circumambulated daily, its leaves offered in worship and its stems strung into the tulsi mala worn by Vaishnavas. A household tulsi is tended, not merely grown, and it is customary to ask before picking from someone else's.

In parallel it has been a pillar of Ayurveda for at least two thousand years, described in the classical compendia as a rejuvenating tonic and one of the herbs given the epithet 'the incomparable one.' From the twentieth century onward it spread outward as a herbal tea and supplement, and it is now grown commercially from Indian smallholdings to North American herb farms - a plant that reached the rest of the world through the tea aisle rather than the spice rack.

Troubleshooting

An empty seed tray usually means the seed was buried; a stalled purple seedling means cold; a lanky single stem means it was never pinched; and volunteers everywhere mean you let it seed.

Seed never came up: almost always buried too deep. Holy basil needs light to germinate - surface-sow or barely cover it, keep the surface damp, and hold the tray near 75°F. Cold mix is the other cause; below 65°F germination stalls badly.

Transplants sat and did nothing for weeks, leaves tinged purple: set out too early into cold soil. Wait until nights hold above 50°F. The plant usually recovers once real warmth arrives, but you lose a month.

One tall lanky stem with few leaves: never pinched. Take the top pair of leaves off now and again in three weeks; it will branch and thicken from below.

Big pale leaves with no smell: too much nitrogen, too much shade, or both. Stop feeding, move it into full sun, and the next flush comes back aromatic.

Wilting even though the soil is wet: root rot from soggy ground or a pot with no drainage. Holy basil takes drought far better than wet feet - improve drainage and water less.

Whole plant blackened after one cold night: frost. It is tender and there is no saving it; harvest everything ahead of the first frost date.

Seedlings appearing everywhere the following spring: normal, and the reason to deadhead in frost-free zones. Hoe or transplant them while small.

Growing across climates

A short-lived perennial in zones 10-11, a reliable summer annual in zones 3-9, and one of the few basils that shrugs off hot humid summers - the limits are frost at one end and soggy tropical wet seasons at the other.

Zones 10-11: a genuine perennial, shrubby and woody at the base, cropping for two or three years before it declines and is best replaced from seed or cuttings. It self-sows freely here, which is the reason to deadhead spikes you are not harvesting.

Zones 7-9: an easy and generous summer annual, and this is where holy basil really earns its place - it sails through the hot humid weeks that stall sweet basil and bring on downy mildew. Transplant one to four weeks after last frost and expect two or three full cuts before the first frost ends it.

Zones 3-6: a summer annual on a shorter leash. Start indoors 6-8 weeks ahead, set out only once nights hold above 50°F, and choose a compact fast type such as Kapoor or Temperate tulsi over the big tropical types, which may not finish. A large container in a sunny spot works well and can be brought indoors to extend the season.

Indoors and overwintering: it makes a fair houseplant on a bright south window, though it stretches in low light and attracts spider mites in dry heated air. The more reliable route in a cold zone is to root late-summer cuttings and grow small plants over winter.

Zones 12-13: grows year-round, but the wet season brings leaf disease and the plants go woody quickly. Plant into the cooler drier months and restart from seed every year or two.
