Full sun, well-drained soil, and NOT much pampering - goji thrives on lean, dry, even salty ground. Support or hedge the sprawling canes, give it room to sucker, and remember it's a nightshade for rotation.

Goji is easy precisely because it's undemanding - the mistake is being too kind to it. Give it full sun (part sun is tolerated) and, above all, well-drained soil; beyond that it actually prefers lean, dry conditions and tolerates poor, sandy, and even salty ground that would starve other fruit. Goji berry is an ancient crop of East Asia, where Lycium barbarum and its cousin L. chinense have been cultivated and used in Chinese medicine and cooking for well over two thousand years. The berries and root bark appear in the earliest Chinese herbal texts, and the Ningxia region of north-central China became - and remains - the classic goji-growing area, its berries prized above others. For most of that history goji was valued as a tonic food and medicine, simmered into soups and steeped into teas, not eaten as a fresh snack.

Goji reached the West centuries ago by an odd route: introduced to Britain and Europe as an ornamental and hedging shrub, it earned the folk name 'matrimony vine' and naturalized in places (the related L. barbarum/L. chinense can be found growing semi-wild). It stayed a minor curiosity in Western gardens until the 2000s 'superfood' boom catapulted the dried berry to global fame and sent gardeners rushing to plant it. So the plant now sold as a trendy novelty is in fact one of the oldest continuously cultivated medicinal fruits on earth - a genuinely ancient food wearing a modern marketing costume.
