Plant with care. Self-sows very freely and has naturalized across much of North America. No US state lists it as a noxious weed, but it is tracked as an invasive garden escape - deadhead before the seed sets, or grow it where volunteers are welcome.

Feverfew is a medicinal herb, not a food. Chewing fresh leaves commonly causes mouth ulcers, sore mouth and loss of taste - reported in up to 11% of users. Anyone allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold or other daisy-family plants can react to it. Avoid in pregnancy (a traditional emmenagogue), with blood thinners or a bleeding disorder, and taper long-term use rather than stopping abruptly. Also toxic to cats, dogs and horses.

Overview

A tough white-daisy cottage perennial grown for one reason above all: it is the garden herb most studied for migraine prevention, though the evidence for it stays thin. Sow it on the surface in a lean, sunny, well-drained spot and it will seed itself around for good - which is both its charm and its warning.

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) looks like a small, slightly untidy chrysanthemum: a bushy one-to-three-foot mound of bright, deeply cut, pungent foliage covered from June to September in three-quarter-inch white daisies with yellow eyes. It has been in cottage gardens for centuries, and it is genuinely hard to kill — full sun, poor soil, drought, neglect, and it thrives.

Its real reputation is medicinal. Among garden herbs, feverfew has one of the better modern evidence bases for anything, thanks to a run of clinical trials on migraine prevention and the sesquiterpene lactone parthenolide. The honest picture is 'promising but unproven' — the trials disagree, and headache societies disagree with each other about whether to recommend it — but this is a plant with real pharmacology rather than folklore alone. Despite the name, it is not a fever remedy; that is a leftover from its Latin root febrifugia, and the evidence does not support it.

The one thing to know before you plant it is that feverfew self-sows extravagantly. One plant becomes a colony in gravel, path cracks and every neighbouring bed within a couple of seasons. No US state lists it as a noxious weed, but it has naturalized widely enough to be tracked as an invasive garden escape, and it belongs somewhere you are relaxed about volunteers — or somewhere you will shear it before the seed sets.

      Press the dust-fine seed onto the surface and do not cover it; light is required for germination. Bottom-water or mist so you do not wash soil over it, hold 65-70F, and expect sprouts in 10-14 days. Burying the seed is the single most common reason a sowing fails.

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Colonies pack into the flower buds and soft shoot tips, where they are hard to see until the buds open distorted. Feverfew usually solves this itself: its open daisies are prime forage for hoverflies and parasitic wasps, so a colony left alone for a week or two is often cleaned up. A hard jet of water into the buds handles the rest - never spray a plant you intend to harvest.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

The commonest way a feverfew actually dies, and it happens in winter rather than summer. Crown rot in cold, heavy, wet ground - often made worse by a mulch piled over the center - kills plants that would shrug off the cold on a raised gritty site. Grow it lean, sunny and sharply drained, keep mulch off the crown, and let a few self-sown seedlings stand as insurance.

An incurable disease caused by a phytoplasma (a bacteria-like organism) spread by aster leafhoppers. It deforms flowers into stunted, greenish, leafy tufts and causes witches'-broom growth. It has a huge host range beyond asters - many flowers and vegetables are susceptible.

Watch for: Flowers turning green and deformed, tufted leafy growth from the cone, upright bushy witches'-broom shoots, yellowed stunted plants.

Prevent: Control leafhoppers and remove nearby weedy hosts; keep plants vigorous; there are no resistant fixes, so vigilance and prompt removal are key.

Treat: None - it cannot be cured. Pull and destroy infected plants immediately (do not compost) to keep leafhoppers from spreading it to healthy asters and other crops.

Feverfew is a daisy-family host and shows the classic symptom clearly: flowers that come out green, leafy and distorted and never open properly, on yellowed stunted growth. There is no cure. Pull the plant, bin it rather than composting it, keep weedy hosts down, and do not save seed from an affected plant - and check nearby echinacea, aster and carrots, which share the disease.

Spider mites are not insects but tiny sap-feeding arachnids, smaller than a grain of salt, and you almost always notice the damage before you notice them. They live on the undersides of leaves and drain the cells one at a time, which is why the leaf goes finely stippled with pale dots before it bronzes and dries. They breed explosively in hot, dry, dusty, still air - a generation can pass in a week at high temperature - so a barely visible population becomes a webbed, bronzed plant within a fortnight. Drought-stressed plants and plants wintered indoors in dry heated air are the classic hosts. Broad-spectrum insecticides make matters worse rather than better, because they kill the predatory mites and lady beetles that normally hold mites in check.

Watch for: Fine pale stippling or speckling across the upper leaf surface, as though the color had been sandblasted out of it, and later a dull bronze or rusty cast over the whole leaf. Delicate webbing across leaf joints, shoot tips, and undersides - that comes with a heavy infestation and means you caught it late. Leaves that dry, curl, and drop early while the plant looks thirsty no matter how much you water it. Hold a leaf over a sheet of white paper and tap it: the specks that fall and then start walking are mites. With a hand lens, look on the undersides for the mites themselves, pale or reddish, and their round translucent eggs. Damage that shows up first on the hottest, dustiest, most sheltered side of a plant, or on a pot sitting near a radiator indoors.

Prevent: Do not let plants get drought-stressed - that is the single strongest trigger, and a plant watered steadily through heat is far less likely to have a mite problem at all. Hose the foliage down, undersides included, during hot dry spells: it knocks mites off, washes away the dust they thrive in, and raises the humidity around the plant for a while. Indoors and under cover, keep the air from going hot, dry, and stagnant, wipe or rinse the leaves occasionally, and keep pots away from radiators and heating vents. Inspect any plant carefully before you bring it indoors for winter or set it among others, since mites almost always arrive on something else. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides: they wipe out the predatory mites, lacewings, and lady beetles that do most of this work for you, and reliably leave you with a worse outbreak than you started with.

Treat: Start with water. A strong jet aimed at the leaf undersides, repeated every few days for a couple of weeks, knocks populations down and breaks the cycle - on many plants that alone ends it. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing back badly infested growth resets the plant to clean foliage. If it keeps building, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the undersides where the mites actually live, and repeat every five to seven days for three rounds: contact sprays do not kill the eggs, so a single application always fails. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating - follow the label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Predatory mites are an effective release in a greenhouse or on an indoor plant. Above all, correct the heat, dust, and drought stress that caused it, or the mites simply come back.

The one pest extension guidance singles out for feverfew, and it arrives with hot, dry, dusty weather. Because the plant regrows fast from the base, shearing an infested clump back hard is quicker and more effective than spraying - it comes back clean. Water in real drought so plants are not stressed, and hose the foliage down in a heatwave.

A hot-weather soil fungus (Sclerotium rolfsii) that attacks the stem at the soil line, collapsing plants; recognizable by white fan-like fungal growth and tan mustard-seed-sized sclerotia at the base.

Watch for: Sudden wilting of individual plants, white fungal fans on the lower stem and surrounding soil, and tiny round tan-to-brown sclerotia at the base in hot, humid weather.

Prevent: Rotate with non-host crops (grasses/corn), improve drainage, bury or remove old debris, avoid deep mulch against stems, and don't overcrowd.

Treat: Remove and destroy affected plants along with the surrounding soil crust; the sclerotia persist, so rotation and sanitation are the long game.

A hot-humid-climate problem and part of why feverfew is short-lived in the Southeast: plants collapse at the soil line in midsummer with white fungal strands and mustard-seed-sized tan sclerotia at the base. Growing on a raised, gritty, well-drained bed with mulch pulled back from the crown, and treating the plant as a fall-to-spring annual there, is more realistic than fighting it.

Holly Leaf Miner Low PestMay, Jun, Jul

The larvae of small flies that tunnel between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf, leaving winding pale trails and translucent blister-like blotches. Because the larva lives inside the leaf, sprays rarely reach it. On an ornamental or an established plant the damage is cosmetic; on a leafy crop it is a direct hit on the part you eat.

Watch for: Squiggly white or tan tunnels and translucent blister patches inside the leaves, sometimes with a tiny maggot visible when a leaf is held up to the light, and small clusters of white eggs lined up on the leaf undersides.

Prevent: Float row cover or fine mesh over the crop from sowing so the adult flies cannot reach the leaves to lay, crush egg clusters on the undersides when you find them, and clear the weed hosts nearby - lambsquarters, chickweed and wild dock are the usual reservoirs. Avoid broad-spectrum sprays, which kill the parasitic wasps that do most of the real control.

Treat: Pick off and destroy mined leaves before the larvae mature, and do not compost them - the larva is inside the mine, so removing the leaf removes the insect. Sprays rarely reach it. On a plant that regrows fast, a hard cutback forces clean new growth, and row cover then protects the fresh flush.

Chrysanthemum leafminer tunnels pale winding trails through feverfew leaves, as it does on other Tanacetum and chrysanthemum relatives. Damage is cosmetic on an ornamental but matters if you are drying leaves, so pick off and bin mined leaves as you see them rather than harvesting them. Sprays are pointless - the larva is inside the leaf.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Grow

Surface-sow the light-dependent seed in full sun and lean, sharply drained soil, space plants 12-18 inches, and resist every urge to feed or water it once it is up. An early indoor sowing flowers the same summer.

Feverfew asks for full sun and sharp drainage, and it is happier in poor ground than in a rich bed. Gravelly, sandy or ordinary garden soil at any pH suits it; heavy clay that stays wet in winter is the one thing it will not survive. In the hot South it takes afternoon shade gratefully, and golden-leaved cultivars need that shade to keep their color from scorching.

The seed is dust-fine and needs light to germinate, so press it onto the surface and do not cover it. Bottom-water or mist rather than pouring water over the tray, which buries the seed and ends the sowing. At 65-70°F it germinates in about 10-14 days. Start indoors 5-7 weeks before setting plants out and you will get flowers the first summer; feverfew is a long-day plant, so bloom is triggered by the lengthening days of early summer and a late sowing simply waits until next year. Direct sowing works too, but is slower and usually gives a leafy first year.

Space plants 12-18 inches apart and then largely leave them alone. Do not add fertilizer or a compost mound: lean soil gives a compact, aromatic, self-supporting plant, while rich soil gives a floppy one that sprawls after the first heavy rain. It grows well in a pot too, which is the tidiest way to enjoy it without seeding your whole garden.

Care

Almost none: no feeding, little watering, and one job that matters - shear the plant back after its first flush of bloom, both to refresh it and to stop it seeding the entire garden.

An established feverfew wants nothing from you. It is drought-tolerant, needs no feeding, and dies far more often from wet soil than from dry. Water new plants through their first season, then only in a real drought. If it flops, the cause is almost always rich soil, shade, or crowding rather than a lack of anything.

The one worthwhile job is a hard shear after the first flush of bloom — cut the plant back by about a third when the first daisies fade. That refreshes the foliage, usually brings a second flowering, and, crucially, removes the seed before it drops. Deadheading is the difference between a plant and a colony. Pinching the tips once in spring, when growth reaches 6-8 inches, gives a bushier plant that holds itself up.

Expect it to be short-lived: two to four years is normal, and a clump that thins out and flowers poorly is simply old. Divide in spring or early fall, take basal cuttings, or just let a few volunteers come on as replacements. In winter, cut the dead stems back and keep heavy mulch off the crown — trapped wet, not cold, is what kills it.

Harvest

Cut leafy sprigs any time from spring on, but take the main drying harvest just before and during bloom when parthenolide peaks. Wear gloves for a big cut, and never chew the fresh leaves.

Leaves are usable from spring onward, but the harvest that matters is at flowering: parthenolide and the aromatic oils are highest just before and during bloom, roughly June to August. Cut leafy flowering stems in the morning after the dew has dried, taking stems above a leaf node rather than picking leaves off one at a time. A mature clump gives several good cuttings a season and regrows quickly from the base.

For the vase, cut when the flower cluster is about three-quarters open; for drying, wait until it is almost fully open. Feverfew is an excellent long-lasting florist's filler and it holds its shape when dried, so a plant grown for medicine earns its bed twice over.

Two cautions belong here rather than in a footnote. Wear gloves for a large harvest — contact dermatitis from the foliage is well documented, particularly in people sensitive to other daisy-family plants. And do not sample as you cut: chewing fresh feverfew leaves is the classic route to mouth ulcers and a numb, sore mouth, reported in up to 11% of people who use the herb that way.

Storage

Dry leaves and flowering tops on a screen, then store airtight in the dark and use within a year - parthenolide degrades with time, heat and light, which is exactly why commercial products vary so wildly.

Dry feverfew the way you would any leafy herb: spread the cut tops in a single layer on a screen or hang small bundles somewhere warm, dark and airy, or use a dehydrator at its lowest setting. When the leaves crumble, strip them from the stems and pack them airtight and out of the light. Whole leaves keep better than crumbled ones, and a full jar keeps better than a half-empty one.

Use dried feverfew within about a year. This is not a general herb-storage platitude: parthenolide is unstable, degrading with time, heat and light, and commercial feverfew capsules assayed in Canada ran from under 10% to over 400% of their labelled parthenolide content — one of the main reasons the migraine trials contradict one another. Home-dried leaf is no more standardized than any other herb, so treat a jar as a seasonal thing rather than a pantry fixture. Some growers prefer a fresh-leaf tincture made at harvest, which sidesteps the drying losses; freezing chopped leaves works too, though it makes them useless for tea.

Propagation & seed saving

You will never buy feverfew twice. It self-sows freely, collected seed stores well, spring or fall division is easy, and basal cuttings root readily - the only real skill is deciding where the volunteers may stand.

Feverfew is one of the easiest plants in the garden to multiply, and one of the hardest to stop. Self-sowing does most of the work: leave a few heads to ripen and volunteers appear the following spring in gravel, path cracks and every open patch of soil. Lift them small, when the taproot comes up cleanly, and either move them where you want them or compost the surplus.

To save seed deliberately, let flower heads brown and dry on the plant, cut them into a paper bag, and rub out the small seed. It is fine, tan, and easy to lose — sieve out the chaff and store it cool and dry, where it stays viable for two to three years. Surface-sow it, since it needs light either way.

Division in spring or early fall rejuvenates an aging clump and gives you free plants, and basal cuttings taken from soft spring shoots root in a couple of weeks in moist mix. One important caveat: the plain species comes true from seed, but the named ornamental cultivars do not. If you want the double pompoms of 'Flore Pleno' or the golden foliage of 'Aureum' you must divide or take cuttings; seedlings from them revert toward the ordinary single white daisy. For medicinal use, that ordinary single is the one you want anyway.

Nutrition

Not a food and not a source of nutrition. Its interest is chemical: parthenolide and other sesquiterpene lactones, flavonoids, and a camphor-rich essential oil - active compounds rather than nutrients.

Feverfew has no nutritional role at all. It is not eaten as a vegetable or used as a seasoning, the leaves are bitter and camphorous, and the amounts anyone takes are measured in a few tenths of a gram. Nutrient figures for it are a curiosity, not a reason to grow it.

What the leaf actually carries is a set of active compounds: chiefly parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone that makes up a fraction of a percent of the dried leaf and is the compound commercial products are standardized to (typically 0.2-0.4%), along with dozens of related lactones, flavonoids such as apigenin and luteolin derivatives, and a volatile oil rich in camphor and chrysanthenyl acetate. Parthenolide content varies enormously with variety, growing conditions, harvest timing and storage — which is a genuine complication for anyone using the plant medicinally, and a running theme in the research.

In the kitchen

Effectively none - feverfew is a medicine-cabinet and cut-flower herb, not a kitchen one. It is intensely bitter, and the traditional 'leaf in a sandwich' habit is precisely what causes the mouth ulcers it is known for.

There is no culinary tradition worth passing on here, and it is worth saying so plainly. Feverfew leaves are bitter and camphorous, unpleasant in any quantity, and the old habit of eating two or three fresh leaves a day folded into bread and butter — the classic English way of taking it for migraine — is exactly the practice behind its most common side effect, mouth ulcers and a sore, numb mouth. If you use the herb at all, dried leaf in tea or capsules, or a tincture, avoids that.

One name to guard against: feverfew is sometimes sold as 'wild chamomile', and cut-flower growers know it as 'matricaria'. It is neither German nor Roman chamomile, it does not taste like them, and it should not be swapped into a chamomile tea blend. Grow feverfew for the medicine cabinet, the beneficial insects and the vase — and grow chamomile if what you want is a pleasant cup.

Traditional & historical uses

The reason most people grow it, and the garden herb most studied for migraine prevention: the trial results are mixed, and a Cochrane review rates the evidence low-quality, with the one positive estimate resting on a single study. Feverfew has been a household medicinal for centuries, taken for headache, arthritic pain, menstrual complaints and, per the name, fevers. The name is the first honest correction to make: it does not work as a fever remedy. 'Feverfew' descends from the Latin febrifugia, a febrifuge, but that use has no modern support and is not why anyone grows it today. What revived the plant was a specifically modern claim — that chewing a few leaves a day prevents migraine — which reached British doctors in the 1970s and, unusually for a folk remedy, was actually put through controlled trials.

What the evidence shows. The proposed mechanism is real pharmacology: parthenolide, a sesquiterpene lactone, inhibits NF-κB signalling and dampens inflammatory mediators, and feverfew extracts reduce platelet aggregation and serotonin release — all plausible for migraine prophylaxis, though parthenolide is probably not the only active constituent. The clinical picture is genuinely mixed. Early trials in the 1980s reported fewer and less severe attacks; later trials found no difference from placebo; and one 170-patient trial of the stabilized CO2 extract MIG-99 (6.25 mg three times daily, Diener 2005) was positive, cutting attacks by roughly 0.6 migraines per month versus placebo. The Cochrane review weighs all six trials and concludes there is low-quality evidence supporting feverfew for migraine prevention, with no major safety concerns raised in the trials — but that 0.6-per-month figure comes from that one study, and Cochrane is explicit it needs confirming in larger trials with stable extracts before firm conclusions can be drawn. Much of the inconsistency traces to the herb itself: parthenolide is unstable, and when Canadian commercial capsules were assayed they ran from under 10% to over 400% of their labelled parthenolide content — so neither the trials nor the shopper have reliably been getting the dose on the box. Guideline bodies land in different places — the American Academy of Neurology has called it probably effective, the European Federation of Neurological Societies possibly beneficial, and the Canadian Headache Society recommends against it. That disagreement is the fairest summary available: promising, modest, and unproven. Trials have used roughly 50-150 mg a day of dried leaf standardized to at least 0.2% parthenolide, taken continuously for months, since it is a preventive rather than something to take during an attack. Home-dried garden leaf is not standardized to anything.

The cautions are real and specific. Mouth ulcers, mouth swelling and loss of taste are the classic adverse effect, reported in up to 11% of users and associated above all with chewing fresh leaves. Anyone allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds or other Asteraceae can cross-react, and contact dermatitis from handling the plant is well documented. Do not use it in pregnancy — feverfew has a long traditional use as an emmenagogue and abortifacient. Because it inhibits platelet aggregation, avoid it with warfarin, aspirin and other anticoagulants or antiplatelets, with a bleeding disorder, and before surgery; it also inhibits several cytochrome P450 enzymes, so interactions with other medications are plausible. Stopping long-term use abruptly can cause 'post-feverfew syndrome' — rebound headache, insomnia, joint and muscle stiffness, fatigue and anxiety — so taper instead. Gastrointestinal upset is common. This is educational information, not medical advice: migraine deserves a diagnosis, and feverfew is something to discuss with a clinician rather than to start on your own.

History

A Balkan daisy carried across Europe as a household physic, named for a fever cure it never delivered, immortalized by an eighteenth-century doctor's headache note, and rescued from obscurity in the 1970s by a Welsh miner's wife.

Feverfew is native to the Balkans and the Caucasus, spreading through Central Asia to the western Himalaya, and it was carried across Europe so early and so thoroughly that it now grows wild almost everywhere people have gardened. Its species name parthenium is usually traced to a story recorded in antiquity: a workman who fell from the Parthenon during its construction was said to have been saved by the herb. Dioscorides used it for inflammation; medieval and early-modern herbalists treated it as a general women's and headache remedy, and it was known in some traditions as the 'mother of herbs'.

The plant's modern career rests on one sentence. In 1772 the physician John Hill wrote that in the worst headaches this herb exceeded whatever else was known — a line quoted in almost everything written about feverfew since. It then went quiet for two centuries until the 1970s, when the story of a Welsh miner's wife who had controlled her migraines by chewing feverfew leaves reached the medical press. That anecdote led to a series of British clinical trials in the 1980s, published in the BMJ and the Lancet, which put an ordinary cottage-garden daisy on pharmacy shelves worldwide.

Along the way it kept its old cottage-garden identity too, as 'bachelor's buttons', 'midsummer daisy' and 'pale maids' — and it remains a staple of the cut-flower trade, sold under the trade name matricaria by growers who have no interest in migraines at all.

Troubleshooting

Leaves but no flowers usually means a late sowing on a long-day plant; flopping means rich soil or shade; a plant lost over winter drowned rather than froze; and feverfew everywhere is simply feverfew doing what it does.

Plenty of leaves, no flowers: almost always a sowing that was too late. Feverfew is a long-day plant, so bloom is triggered by the long days of early summer; a seedling that is not big enough by then waits until next year. Start indoors 5-7 weeks before setting out for flowers in the first season. Deep shade will also suppress bloom.

Tall, floppy, sprawling after rain: too rich, too shaded, or too crowded. Feverfew is built for lean ground and full sun. Stop feeding, thin to 12-18 inches, and pinch the tips once in spring so the plant builds a self-supporting frame.

The plant vanished over winter: nearly always drowning, not freezing. Wet, heavy soil and a mulch piled over the crown are what kill it; move it somewhere raised and gritty and keep mulch off the center. Bear in mind that feverfew is short-lived anyway — a clump lost in its third or fourth year has simply reached the end.

Green, leafy, distorted flowers that never open properly: aster yellows, a leafhopper-spread phytoplasma with no cure. Pull the plant, bin it rather than composting it, and control weedy hosts nearby.

Fine pale stippling and webbing in a hot dry spell: spider mites, the one pest this plant reliably attracts. Hose the foliage down and shear the clump back hard — it regrows clean.

Sore mouth or ulcers after using it: stop chewing fresh leaves. That single habit accounts for most reported feverfew side effects. Itchy rash on wrists and forearms after cutting: contact dermatitis from the foliage — wear gloves and long sleeves.

Growing across climates

Best in zones 5-8 in lean, sharply drained ground. Zone 4 is at the edge and works best if you let it self-seed. Dry-summer zone 9 is fine as a cool-season plant; the humid Southeast defeats it with heat, wet and southern blight.

Zones 5-8 are feverfew's home range and where it behaves exactly as described: a hardy, short-lived perennial that returns each spring, blooms all summer, and self-sows. Give it full sun and drainage and it needs nothing else. In the warmer half of that band, afternoon shade in July is welcome and golden-leaved cultivars need it.

Zone 4 sits at or beyond the edge of most references, which put feverfew at 5-9. It does overwinter in cold gardens with reliable snow cover and a raised, gritty, sharply drained position, and gardeners well north of zone 5 grow it — but the safer plan is to treat it as a self-seeding annual: let one plant ripen seed each year so volunteers replace whatever the winter takes. Keep heavy wet mulch off the crown, which does more damage than the cold.

Zone 9 splits by summer humidity rather than by winter cold. In the dry-summer West it grows well as a cool-season plant, planted in fall and flowering through spring. In the humid Southeast and Gulf it is a poor bet: extension guidance is blunt that feverfew is intolerant of hot, humid Southern summers, and the combination of heat, night humidity and wet soil brings southern blight and crown rot. There, grow it as a fall-to-spring annual in a raised bed or a pot with gritty mix, and expect to resow.

Everywhere, the pattern is the same: winter wet, not winter cold, is the limiting factor, and a raised, lean, sun-baked position beats the zone on the label.
