Grown as an ornamental, not a food plant. Petals are considered non-toxic and are sometimes used as a bland edible garnish, but cosmos has no real culinary or medicinal tradition - treat it as a flower for the vase and the bees, not the plate.

Overview

The airy, unkillable cottage-garden annual that blooms all summer on poor soil and neglect - a pollinator magnet and one of the easiest cut flowers to grow from seed.

Cosmos are the flower for the gardener who wants a lot of bloom for almost no effort. Sow the seed in warm soil, stand back, and by midsummer you have a cloud of daisy-like flowers on tall, ferny stems that keeps going until frost. They thrive on the two things most flowers hate — poor soil and drought — and they draw bees, butterflies, and hoverflies in droves, which is why they turn up in so many pollinator and cut-flower plots.

Two species cover almost everything grown. Cosmos bipinnatus is the tall, classic garden cosmos (3-6 feet) with lacy foliage and big flat flowers in white, pink, and crimson — the 'Sensation', 'Sonata', 'Double Click', and shell-petaled 'Seashells' types. Cosmos sulphureus is the shorter, heat-loving orange-and-gold species (1-4 feet), the 'Cosmic', 'Bright Lights', and 'Xanthos' lineage. Both are among the simplest flowers you can grow from a packet of seed.

Japanese Beetles Medium PestJun, Jul, Aug

Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.

Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.

Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.

Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.

They are drawn to the open blooms and shred them. Cut and enjoy flowers before the beetles find them - a vigorous plant keeps producing.

An incurable disease caused by a phytoplasma (a bacteria-like organism) spread by aster leafhoppers. It deforms flowers into stunted, greenish, leafy tufts and causes witches'-broom growth. It has a huge host range beyond asters - many flowers and vegetables are susceptible.

Watch for: Flowers turning green and deformed, tufted leafy growth from the cone, upright bushy witches'-broom shoots, yellowed stunted plants.

Prevent: Control leafhoppers and remove nearby weedy hosts; keep plants vigorous; there are no resistant fixes, so vigilance and prompt removal are key.

Treat: None - it cannot be cured. Pull and destroy infected plants immediately (do not compost) to keep leafhoppers from spreading it to healthy asters and other crops.

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Grow

Direct sow after frost into lean soil and full sun; the golden rule is starve them - rich soil gives all leaves and no flowers.

Cosmos are made for direct sowing. Wait until the last frost has passed and soil has warmed to 65°F, then scatter or space the seed and barely cover it — about 1/4 inch, since they germinate best with a little light. They'll be up in a week or two and blooming in seven to ten weeks. In short-summer climates you can start them indoors four weeks early and transplant while young, but they resent being pot-bound. Thin tall types to 12-18 inches.

The single most important thing to know about cosmos is counterintuitive: keep them lean and thirsty. Rich soil and fertilizer produce a tall jungle of beautiful ferny foliage and almost no flowers — the classic cosmos disappointment. Give them full sun, poor-to-average soil, no feeding, and only occasional deep watering, and they bloom their heads off. Pinch the tall types once at 12-18 inches for a bushier, better-branched plant.

Care

Neglect suits them: don't feed, water sparingly, pinch once, and keep cutting to keep the blooms coming.

Cosmos care is mostly about restraint. Do not fertilize — it's the number-one cause of leafy, flowerless plants. Water only in real drought; these are drought-tolerant flowers once their roots take hold. Pinch tall types once early to encourage branching, and stake the very tall 'Sensation' types in windy sites or a rich garden bed where they get top-heavy.

The other habit is simply to keep cutting or deadheading. Every bloom you remove — for the vase or just to tidy up — tells the plant to make more, and a cosmos left to set seed slows right down. In hot, humid regions watch for powdery mildew on crowded plants (space wider, improve airflow) and pull any plant showing the yellowed, distorted, green-petaled growth of aster yellows, a disease there's no cure for.

Harvest

Cosmos are a lovely, if short-lived, cut flower. Harvest in the cool morning when blooms are still in bud or just beginning to open — fully open flowers shatter and drop petals faster in the vase. Cut deep into the plant, down to a leaf node, to draw out long new stems rather than short stubs. Strip the lower leaves and they'll last around five to seven days in fresh water.

As with all cut-and-come-again flowers, cutting is the maintenance: a plant kept picked and deadheaded blooms continuously until frost. At the very end of the season, leave a few heads to brown and dry for next year's seed.

Storage

Blooms last about a week in water and don't dry well; seed keeps for years.

Cut cosmos hold five to seven days in clean, frequently changed water — recut the stems and strip submerged leaves. They don't dry well for everlasting arrangements (the delicate petals shrivel), so enjoy them fresh. The lasting product is seed: the slim dark seeds, dried thoroughly and stored cool and dark, stay viable three to four years, so one good plant can seed a whole bed for seasons to come.

Propagation & seed saving

About as easy as seed saving gets - and cosmos self-sows so freely you may never need to sow again.

Saving cosmos seed is effortless. Let a few of the best blooms fade and dry fully on the plant until the head browns and the slim, dark, needle-like seeds slip loose; strip them into an envelope and dry another week. Open-pollinated types (most 'Sensation' and 'Sonata' cosmos) come reasonably true; named doubles and novelty selections will scatter into a mix the next year.

Even easier: cosmos self-sows enthusiastically. Left to drop seed, a patch reliably returns on its own the following spring — sometimes to the point of cheerful weediness — so in many gardens the plant handles its own propagation and you simply thin the volunteers.

Troubleshooting

The classic problem is all leaves and no flowers from rich soil; the rest is mildew from crowding and a scatter of pests.

Tall, leafy plants with no flowers: the signature cosmos mistake — the soil is too rich or you're fertilizing. Stop feeding entirely; cosmos bloom on poor, lean ground. History

A Mexican wildflower named for the Greek word for harmony and order, carried worldwide by Spanish missionaries.

Cosmos is native to Mexico and Central America, where it grows wild in scrubby, sun-baked ground — a clue to why it loves poor soil in the garden. Spanish priests grew it in mission gardens and gave it its name: cosmos, from the Greek kosmos, meaning order, harmony, or a beautifully ordered whole, for the neat, even arrangement of its petals.

Introduced to European and North American gardens in the 18th and 19th centuries, cosmos became a cottage-garden staple prized for its long bloom and easy nature. Cosmos sulphureus, the orange species, arrived later and was bred down from a lanky wildflower into the compact, brilliant 'Bright Lights' and 'Cosmic' bedding types grown today.

Growing across climates

A heat-loving warm-season annual everywhere: one long summer crop in the north, cool-shoulder color in the hottest zones.

Zones 3-6: a straightforward summer annual — direct sow after the last frost for bloom from midsummer to the first fall freeze, which ends it; choose faster or shorter types where the season is truly short. Zones 7-9: long, generous seasons that suit cosmos perfectly; sow spring for months of bloom and expect volunteer seedlings the next year. Zones 10-11: the enemy flips to extreme summer heat and humidity (mildew, thin flowering), so grow cosmos in the cooler shoulders — late winter into spring, and again in fall — rather than the worst of midsummer. Cosmos sulphureus takes heat and humidity better than the taller bipinnatus and is the smarter pick in the Deep South. Everywhere, cosmos is firmly frost-tender and must be re-sown each year, which its free self-sowing usually handles for you.
