Compass plant is a non-toxic native prairie forb grown for its towering yellow flowers and wildlife value, not for food. Early settlers and Native peoples chewed the hardened resin that oozes from the upper stem as a natural chewing gum (hence 'rosinweed'), but it is not a food crop. No handling precautions - the foliage has no irritants.

Compass plant (Silphium laciniatum) is one of the grand monuments of the tallgrass prairie. From a rosette of enormous, deeply lobed leaves it sends up stout stalks 6 to 9 feet tall (sometimes more), topped through mid and late summer with bright yellow, sunflower-like flower heads. Its most famous trick gives it its name: the big basal leaves align their edges roughly north-south, holding their faces to the gentler morning and evening sun and their edges to the harsh midday glare - a living compass that helped orient prairie travelers.

Below ground it is even more remarkable. Compass plant drives a massive taproot many feet deep, which makes it exceptionally drought-tolerant, wind-firm, and astonishingly long-lived - individual plants can persist for decades, even approaching a century. It is a magnet for bees and butterflies, its big seeds feed goldfinches, and the upper stem weeps a fragrant resin that hardens into a chewable 'gum' (its old name, rosinweed). In the garden it is a commanding vertical native for the back of a prairie or meadow planting.

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Crown rot is the rotting of a plant at the crown - the growing point where the stems meet the roots, right at or just below soil level. Soil fungi and water molds that live in most ground attack that tissue whenever it sits wet, cold, and airless, and because the crown is the one part a perennial cannot regrow from, losing it usually means losing the plant. It is above all a winter problem: a plant that survives hard frost perfectly well in dry ground rots out in a wet one, and the classic story is a perennial that simply never comes back in spring. Dry-adapted plants growing in heavy or over-improved soil are the most vulnerable, along with anything that has mulch, wet leaves, or piled debris sitting against the crown, and anything planted too deep.

Watch for: A plant that fails to green up or emerge in spring when everything around it does - the most common way this gets discovered, and by then it is already too late. Stems that wilt, blacken, and collapse in wet weather while the soil is clearly damp rather than dry. A crown that is soft, dark, brown, or mushy when you press or lift it, sometimes with a foul smell, instead of firm and pale. New growth that pulls away from the crown with almost no resistance. Clumps browning and going hollow in the middle while the outer growth stays alive. In stands and cover crops, patches wilting, yellowing, and thinning out after wet spells or over a mild wet winter.

Prevent: Drainage and airflow at the crown are everything. Match the plant to the site first: a dry-adapted perennial planted in heavy or enriched ground is on borrowed time whatever else you do. In wet or clay soil, plant on a slope, berm, raised bed, or gritty rock-garden site so water drains away from the crown rather than standing over it. Set plants at the right depth - never bury the crown - and keep mulch, dead leaves, and debris pulled back from it rather than piled against it, since damp material resting on the crown is a common trigger. Do not overwater, and ease right off during dormancy, when a resting plant wants to be barely damp rather than wet. Give crowded plantings enough space and airflow to dry out, and do not sow a stand too thickly. In cold, wet climates, divide in spring rather than fall, so plants are not recovering from surgery through the wettest months.

Treat: There is usually no cure once the crown itself has rotted: the plant is lost, and the job is to save what you can and fix the site. Lift it, cut away every soft, dark, rotted part with a clean blade back to firm tissue, and replant only healthy divisions or firm outer growth into fresh, sharply drained soil or medium. On potted and specialist plants, repotting into fresh airy medium and keeping them drier with better airflow gives the best chance, though a badly rotted crown is usually beyond saving. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it. Replant somewhere better drained rather than back into the same wet spot - or start again from seed, cuttings, or self-sown seedlings, which is the realistic option for anything that resents being moved at all.

Uncommon in this deeply drought-adapted plant, and only in wet, heavy ground. Note that the enormous taproot means a compass plant cannot be lifted and moved - if you lose one, start fresh from seed in better-drained ground.

Flopping in Rich, Wet, or Windy Sites Low DisorderJul, Aug, Sep

Tall prairie forbs are built for lean, sunny, wind-swept ground. Grown too rich, too wet, or in an exposed spot, the bloom stalks lean, splay out from the crown, or go over entirely - usually after a summer storm - and the plant loses the upright form that is the whole point of it.

Watch for: Bloom stalks leaning, splaying outward from the crown, or laid flat after heavy rain or wind; worst in fertile, moist soil and in open, exposed sites.

Prevent: Grow it lean and in full sun, with no fertilizer and no supplemental water once established, and give it shelter or close prairie companions for mutual support rather than standing it alone in the open.

Treat: Cultural, not chemical: stop feeding and watering, and re-site or interplant for support. Staking rarely pays on stalks this tall - cut a flopped stem for the vase and let the rest stand.

At 6-9 feet compass plant sits at the extreme end of this, and a rich, moist border is exactly what makes it lean - one of the few garden plants genuinely improved by neglect. Note that shade is not a factor here: compass plant demands full sun.

The main thing to manage is height and posture. In rich soil, too much water, or a very windy, exposed site the towering stalks can lean or flop, especially after storms - grow it lean and give it companions or a sheltered back-of-border position for mutual support. Because the taproot cannot be divided, you increase it only by seed. Leave the ripe heads up as long as you can: the goldfinches will thank you, and the plant will quietly self-sow a few volunteers where it is happy.

Compass plant is not a food plant - its value is ecological, and it is considerable. The big yellow heads are a generous mid-to-late-summer nectar and pollen source for native bees, honeybees, and butterflies, and the large seeds are a prized food for goldfinches and other seed-eating birds, which flock to the ripening heads. The tall stalks and old stems give cover and overwintering habitat.

Its deepest contribution is literally underground. The plant's massive taproot reaches far into the prairie subsoil, anchoring against drought and erosion, drawing up nutrients, and adding to the deep, carbon-rich soils that the tallgrass prairie is famous for. As a signature species of that vanished grassland, compass plant is a favorite of prairie restorations - a plant that feeds pollinators and birds above ground while building and holding soil below, all with essentially no care.

History

Few prairie plants carry as much lore as the compass plant. Its habit of aligning its large leaves north-south was well known to Native peoples and to nineteenth-century settlers and surveyors, who used it as a rough natural compass when crossing the featureless sea of grass - the trait the naturalist John Muir and the writer Aldo Leopold both remarked on. Leopold made it a symbol of the lost prairie in A Sand County Almanac, mourning the plowing-under of the grassland it represented.

People also used the plant directly: the fragrant resin that oozes from the upper stem hardens in the sun into a natural chewing gum (giving it the folk name rosinweed), chewed by Native children and later by settlers, and various parts had folk-medicinal uses. Today, as the tallgrass prairie survives only in scattered remnants, compass plant is a keystone of prairie restoration and a prized native ornamental - a living link to the deep-rooted grassland that once covered the heart of the continent.

Troubleshooting

Slow start and late bloom are normal; flopping means rich soil or wind; failure usually means wet feet or a disturbed taproot. It simply needs room, sun, and time.

Hot, dry summers: excellent, since the deep root gives outstanding drought tolerance; it shrugs off heat and dry spells that wilt shallower plants. The one real limit is drainage - it rots in soggy, poorly drained ground, so wet clay and standing winter water are its weak spots more than any amount of cold. Give it sun, room, and soil that drains, and it thrives from the cold northern prairies through the warm lower Midwest and southern plains.
