Plant with care. Plant it where you want it permanently: every root fragment left in the ground regrows, so an established patch is near-impossible to remove. It is also hepatotoxic and no longer recommended for internal use - but it remains a genuinely superb compost, mulch and fertility plant.

Never taken internally. All parts contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids that damage the liver and can cause fatal veno-occlusive disease; oral products are restricted in several countries, and the root holds far more than the leaf. Do not brew it as tea. External use on unbroken skin is traditional but debated - avoid it in pregnancy and on children. It is also the plant a foxglove rosette gets mistaken for: comfrey leaves are coarsely bristly and rough to the hand, foxglove soft and finely downy.

Overview

The permaculture fertility workhorse - a big bristly perennial with a six-foot taproot, cut three or four times a season for mulch and compost. Two things to know first: it is hepatotoxic and no longer used internally, and once established it is effectively permanent.

Comfrey is the fertility engine of a permaculture garden. It is a big, coarse, bristly-leaved perennial of the borage family with drooping mauve or cream bells that bumblebees work all summer, and a taproot that can reach six to ten feet into the subsoil. That root is the whole point: it pulls up potassium and other minerals from below the reach of ordinary garden plants and puts them into leaves you can cut three or four times a season and lay straight down as mulch, throw into the compost heap as an activator, or steep into a (memorably foul-smelling) liquid feed.

Two facts belong before any of that, though. The first is that comfrey is hepatotoxic. All parts contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which damage the liver and can cause a serious and sometimes fatal condition called veno-occlusive disease. The old “knitbone tea” tradition has not survived the research: internal use is no longer recommended by anyone credible, and oral comfrey products are banned or restricted in a number of countries. It is not a herb-bed plant and it is not a tea.

The second is that comfrey is permanent. Every fragment of that deep root regrows into a new plant, so digging out an established clump generally multiplies it. Choose the site once, deliberately, and choose a sterile Bocking cultivar of Russian comfrey so it cannot seed itself around on top of that. Handled with those two facts in mind, it is one of the most genuinely useful plants you can put in a garden.

      Comfrey regrows from any piece of root left behind, so digging it out mostly multiplies it. Site it at the edge of the garden, along a fence, at the base of fruit trees, or in a dedicated bed - not in a rotation bed, not in a raised bed you may want back, and not where a rototiller will ever pass. A sunken bottomless container or a bed ringed by mown grass are the two practical ways to keep it in bounds.

      The drooping mauve, pink or cream bells are one of the best long-season bumblebee plants in the garden, and long-tongued bees work them heavily from late spring onward. If you cut every flush the moment it is ready you get no flowers at all, so let one clump - or one round of growth - bloom before you cut it.

      Common comfrey (Symphytum officinale) sets viable seed and self-sows into paths, borders and hedge bottoms, and each seedling makes its own un-diggable taproot. Cutting the flush as it finishes flowering prevents this entirely. The Bocking cultivars of Russian comfrey are effectively sterile and do not have this problem - which is the main reason they are the ones to plant.

      Comfrey dies back to the crown after hard frost. Rake off and bin - do not compost - the last season's foliage where comfrey rust was heavy, since the fungus overwinters on the debris. Otherwise the collapsed leaves can simply be left as their own mulch.

      If a clump has to go, dormancy is the moment: dig the whole crown and follow the taproot as deep as you can, then expect regrowth from the fragments you missed and cut every new shoot off at the ground repeatedly through the following season, or smother the ground with heavy cardboard and mulch for a full year. Do not rototill it - that turns one plant into fifty.

Watch out for

Pyrrolizidine Alkaloid Toxicity High Disorderyear-round

Every part of comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which the liver converts into compounds that damage the small hepatic veins. Prolonged or repeated internal use can cause hepatic veno-occlusive disease, which is serious and sometimes fatal, and the damage can build up over time rather than arriving with a single dose. The root carries a far heavier load than the leaves, young leaves more than old, and Russian comfrey generally more than common comfrey. The US FDA advised the removal of oral comfrey products from the market in 2001, and several countries ban or restrict them.

Watch for: Any use of comfrey as a tea, tincture, capsule, syrup or root decoction; comfrey leaves in a herb bed or drying rack alongside plants that are brewed; anyone treating the old 'knitbone tea' tradition as current advice. Children mouthing the leaves, and comfrey being cut as green feed for rabbits, poultry or livestock, are the other routes worth guarding against.

Prevent: Do not take comfrey internally in any form, and do not feed it to animals. Grow it as a soil and compost plant only, keep it out of herb beds and away from anything you gather for tea, and label the patch if others garden with you. Wear gloves when cutting and wash before eating. External comfrey ointments on unbroken skin are the only application with meaningful modern support, and are still avoided on broken skin, in pregnancy, while nursing, and for long-term daily use.

Treat: If comfrey has been swallowed or taken as a preparation, contact poison control or your doctor for advice rather than waiting to see what happens - liver injury from these alkaloids can be silent at first. Seek medical attention promptly for abdominal swelling or pain over the liver, jaundice, dark urine or unexplained fatigue in anyone who has been using comfrey internally. Stop all internal use immediately and take the product or plant material with you.

This is the single most important thing on the page: comfrey is a fertility plant, not a herb. The alkaloid content is why the plant's medicinal era ended, and why this catalog lists no edible parts for it despite centuries of tea and poultice tradition.

Confusion with Foxglove Rosettes High DisorderMar, Apr, May, Jun

Foxglove in its first year makes only a flat rosette of soft grey-green leaves that closely resembles young comfrey, and foxglove is a cardiac poison whose glycosides are not reduced by drying or brewing. Documented fatal poisonings have come from exactly this mistake: a rosette gathered as comfrey and made into tea. Because foxglove self-sows prolifically and both plants like the same moist, part-shaded ground, mixed patches happen easily, and the risk is highest in spring when both are small.

Watch for: Foxglove seedlings and rosettes appearing in or near the comfrey patch, especially downwind of a foxglove that was allowed to seed the previous summer. Any grey-green rosette in a bed you gather from that you cannot positively identify. The discriminator is texture: comfrey leaves are coarsely BRISTLY and noticeably rough to the hand, while foxglove leaves are soft and finely downy, with scalloped-toothed margins and a strongly netted vein pattern underneath.

Prevent: Keep the two plants in separate parts of the garden rather than in adjacent labelled beds - physical separation is far more reliable than identification skill on a dim spring morning. Do not let foxglove seed anywhere near comfrey, pull volunteer rosettes out of the comfrey patch on sight, and label the comfrey clump. If you gather leaves for any purpose, gather only from a plant you planted yourself and know the position of.

Treat: If there is any doubt about a leaf, discard it - nothing about comfrey is valuable enough to gamble on. Suspected ingestion of foxglove, including tea brewed from leaves, is a medical emergency: call poison control or emergency services immediately without waiting for symptoms, and take a piece of the plant with you if you can.

Borage sits in the same confusion cluster and is also bristly; mullein rosettes are woolly rather than bristly. Of the group, only foxglove is deadly, which is why the separation rule is worth keeping even though comfrey itself is no longer gathered for internal use.

Comfrey regenerates from almost any piece of its deep taproot, so an established clump is effectively permanent and every attempt to dig it out tends to multiply it instead. A rototiller run through a patch will plant a whole bed of it. On top of that, common comfrey and unnamed Russian comfrey seedlings set viable seed and self-sow into paths, borders and hedge bottoms, where each seedling promptly makes its own un-diggable root. This is not invasive behaviour in the ecological sense - comfrey does not overrun wild habitat the way a listed invasive does - but it is genuinely irreversible at garden scale.

Watch for: Shoots reappearing through the season everywhere a clump was dug out or forked through. New plants popping up along the line a rototiller travelled. Seedlings appearing at a distance from the parent plant, which means you have a seed-setting type rather than a sterile Bocking cultivar. Comfrey pushing out from under a fence or bed edge into a lawn or a neighbouring border.

Prevent: Choose the site once, deliberately, and treat it as permanent: garden edge, fence line, orchard floor or a dedicated bed, never a rotation bed or a raised bed you may want back. Plant a sterile Bocking cultivar so seed is not a second route. Ring the patch with regularly mown grass, which is the simplest effective barrier, or sink a bottomless container. Never fork, dig or till through a clump you want to keep in bounds, and cut seed-setting types as each flush finishes flowering.

Treat: Remove it by exhaustion rather than excavation. Cut or mow every emerging shoot off at ground level as soon as it appears, repeatedly, through a full season or two until the root starves - or smother the ground with heavy overlapping cardboard and a thick mulch for a full year. Digging helps only if you are prepared to follow up on the regrowth for a season afterwards. Do not rototill, and do not compost live root pieces; bin them or dry them to death on a hard surface first.

Worth being honest about at planting time rather than discovering later. Almost every regret about comfrey is a siting regret.

Slugs & Snails Low PestApr, May, Jun

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

Only the softest early spring growth and newly planted crowns are worth defending. Once the bristly mature leaves are up, comfrey outgrows slug damage entirely and needs nothing - the holes in an established clump are cosmetic on a plant you are about to cut for mulch anyway.

Comfrey Rust Low DiseaseJun, Jul, Aug, Sep

A rust fungus specific to comfrey, producing orange-brown powdery pustules on the undersides of leaves and matching yellow blotching above. It builds through warm humid weather and wet summers, spreading fastest in crowded, poorly ventilated clumps, and overwinters on the old foliage and crown debris. It is disfiguring and reduces the leaf crop, but it does not kill an established plant, and it does not affect other garden plants.

Watch for: Orange to rust-brown pustules dusting the leaf undersides, with corresponding pale-yellow spotting on the upper surface. Leaves yellowing, curling and dying back early from the bottom of the clump upward. Growth that looks tired and thin in late summer on a plant that started the season vigorously. Worst in the crowded centre of an uncut clump, and in wet years.

Prevent: Cut the clump regularly rather than letting it stand and get congested - frequent cutting is itself the best control, because it repeatedly removes the infected tissue. Space plants a full three feet apart for airflow, and clear and bin the collapsed foliage in late fall rather than leaving it as mulch where rust was present. Bocking 14 is notably more resistant than common comfrey, which is one reason it became the standard cultivar.

Treat: Cut the whole clump down to two or three inches at the first sign of a heavy infection and bin the foliage - do not compost it and do not use it as mulch. The regrowth usually comes back clean. There is no spray worth using on a plant you cut to the ground several times a season anyway. If a clump rusts badly every single year, replace it with Bocking 14 in a more open position.

The only disease comfrey routinely gets, and it is a nuisance rather than a threat. Because the leaves are cut for mulch, binning rather than composting rusted material matters more here than it would on an ornamental.

Vigorous and productive, but variable - unnamed seedlings are not guaranteed sterile, so treat an unlabelled plant as a potential self-sower and cut it before seed sets. Buy a named Bocking cultivar if sterility matters to you, which it usually should.

Grow

Plant sterile Bocking 14 root cuttings or crowns in a permanent spot - garden edge, orchard floor, dedicated bed - three feet apart in deep soil and full sun to part shade. It asks for nothing after the first season.

Comfrey is close to unkillable, so growing it is mostly a question of where. Give it full sun to part shade and deep soil that it can drive a taproot through; it will grow in clay, in poor ground, and in a surprising amount of shade, and it tolerates heat and drought once established. What it does not tolerate is ground that stands waterlogged all winter, which rots the crown.

Choose the plant carefully. Common comfrey (Symphytum officinale) sets viable seed and self-sows; the Russian hybrid S. × uplandicum selections known as Bocking 14 and Bocking 4 are effectively sterile, higher-yielding, and are what almost every experienced grower plants. Bocking 14 is the standard for cutting; Bocking 4 is the older livestock-forage selection. Either way you are buying root cuttings or crowns, not seed.

Plant two- to three-inch root pieces horizontally two to three inches deep, or crowns with the growing point just at the surface, spacing them three feet apart — a mature clump is a yard across. Three to five plants is plenty for a home garden; a dozen will mulch a small orchard. Water through the first summer while the root goes down, then essentially leave it alone. Do not put it in a rotation bed, a raised bed you might want back, or anywhere a rototiller will pass: site it at a garden edge, along a fence line, on an orchard floor, or in a dedicated bed ringed by mown grass.

Care

Cut it hard and often - that is the entire regime. No feeding, no watering after year one, no staking. The only real management jobs are containing it and, on seed-setting types, cutting before seed drops.

An established comfrey plant needs no feeding, no watering and no staking. The care regime is simply to cut it: take the clump down to two or three inches above the crown whenever it reaches roughly knee height, which in most of the country means three or four cuts between late spring and early fall. Heavy cutting does not weaken it in the least — an uncut clump just gets coarse, leans over, and stops being useful. Stop cutting about six weeks before your first frost so the plant can rebuild its reserves.

Everything else is containment. Comfrey spreads two ways: by seed on the wild species, and by root wherever the ground is disturbed. If you are growing common comfrey rather than a Bocking cultivar, cut each flush as it finishes flowering so it cannot drop seed. And never dig, fork or till through a clump you want to keep in bounds — every severed fragment becomes another plant. A ring of regularly mown grass around the patch is the simplest effective barrier there is.

Wear gloves and long sleeves for cutting. The stiff hairs on the leaves and stems scratch and irritate forearms, and this is a plant whose sap you do not want near your mouth. Comfrey has almost no pest or disease problems worth naming apart from comfrey rust, which disfigures leaves in wet summers and is best handled by cutting the affected growth off and binning it rather than composting it.

Harvest

Cut for the garden, never for the kitchen: chop-and-drop mulch around fruit and hungry crops, compost activator in layers, or a potassium-rich liquid feed steeped in a lidded barrel. Three or four cuts a season from a mature clump.

Everything cut from comfrey goes to the garden, never to the kitchen. There are three standard uses, and a mature clump supplies all of them.

Chop and drop. The simplest and best: cut the leaves and lay them thick, unshredded, around fruit trees, currants and gooseberries, potatoes, tomatoes, squash and anything else hungry. They wilt within a day and rot down within weeks, releasing a notably potassium-rich feed exactly where the roots are. Keep the material a hand's width clear of stems and trunks.

Compost activator. Comfrey leaves are high in nitrogen relative to their bulk and break down fast, so layering them through a heap of drier material gets it heating. A few armfuls will visibly restart a stalled compost pile.

Liquid feed. Pack cut leaves into a barrel or bucket, weight them down, add just enough water to cover, and put a lid on it — the resulting black concentrate after three or four weeks is excellent diluted about one part in ten for tomatoes, peppers and anything fruiting, and the smell is genuinely appalling. Site the barrel away from the house. Wear gloves throughout; nothing from this plant is drunk, eaten, brewed as tea, or fed to livestock.

Propagation & seed saving

Root cuttings, and they work almost too well - a two-inch piece of root buried two inches deep becomes a plant. That same ease is exactly why an established patch cannot be dug out.

Comfrey is propagated from root cuttings, and it is about as easy as propagation gets. Lift a section of root in early spring or fall, cut it into pieces two to three inches long, and bury them horizontally two to three inches deep in the new position. Almost every piece grows. Crown divisions — a spade-slice off the side of an established clump with a growing point attached — work just as reliably.

It is worth sitting with what that means. The same trait that makes comfrey trivial to multiply is precisely what makes it impossible to remove: any fragment of root left in the ground when you dig, fork or till becomes a new plant, and a rototiller run through a clump will plant a whole bed of it. This is not a plant you can move on a whim, and it is not one you can share out of a bed you are also trying to clear.

Seed is a different matter, and largely a warning rather than a method. Common comfrey sets viable seed and self-sows freely, which is how it turns up in hedge bottoms and along ditches across much of the country; the Bocking cultivars are effectively sterile, which is one of the main reasons to grow them. If you have a seed-setting plant, cut it before the seed ripens.

Traditional & historical uses

The historic 'knitbone' - genuinely rich in allantoin, and genuinely hepatotoxic. Internal use is no longer recommended by anyone credible and oral products are restricted in several countries; external use on unbroken skin remains traditional but is still debated.

Comfrey's folk name is knitbone, and for centuries the leaf and root were poulticed onto sprains, bruises and fractures and brewed as a tea for a long list of internal complaints. The plant is not inert: it is rich in allantoin, a compound that promotes cell proliferation, along with rosmarinic acid and mucilage, and topical comfrey preparations have been studied for sprains and joint pain with reasonably encouraging results.

That is where the good news ends. All parts of comfrey contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which the liver converts into compounds that damage the small hepatic veins. The result — hepatic veno-occlusive disease — is serious, can be fatal, and can develop after prolonged use rather than a single dose. The alkaloid load is far higher in the root than the leaf, and higher in young leaves than old, and Russian comfrey generally carries more than common comfrey. On the strength of this, the US FDA advised removal of oral comfrey products from the market in 2001, and several countries ban or restrict them outright.

The honest position for a garden page is therefore blunt. Do not take comfrey internally in any form — no tea, no capsules, no tincture, no root decoction — and do not give it to children or to animals as feed. External use on unbroken skin, for a limited period, is what commercial comfrey ointments still do and is the only application with meaningful modern support; even there, alkaloids are absorbed through skin, so it is avoided on broken skin, in pregnancy and while nursing, and is not for long-term daily use. Grow comfrey for your soil, not for your body.

History

A European medicinal herb carried to America by colonists, reinvented in the 1950s by Lawrence D. Hills as the Bocking fertility cultivars, and then removed from the internal-medicine repertoire by the pyrrolizidine research of the 1970s and 80s.

Comfrey has been a European medicinal plant since antiquity — the name traces back to Latin roots meaning to grow together, matching the folk name knitbone — and it travelled with colonists to North America as a standard dooryard herb, from where it escaped into ditches and hedge bottoms across the continent. The Russian hybrid S. × uplandicum arrived in Britain in the nineteenth century, promoted at first as a livestock forage crop.

Its modern identity was made in the 1950s by the English gardener Lawrence D. Hills, who trialled comfrey strains at Bocking, near Braintree in Essex, and selected the numbered clones — of which Bocking 14 became the standard — for yield, disease resistance and sterility. Hills founded the Henry Doubleday Research Association, named for the Victorian Quaker smallholder who had championed the plant, and it was through that organic-gardening movement that comfrey became the fertility staple of permaculture rather than a medicine.

The medical chapter closed in the decades that followed. Research through the 1970s and 1980s established the pyrrolizidine alkaloid content of the genus and linked comfrey preparations to hepatic veno-occlusive disease, and regulators moved against oral products — Canada, Germany, the UK and eventually the US FDA in 2001. What survives is a plant with an emphatically horticultural future: the same deep root, the same enormous leaf crop, entirely reassigned from the medicine cabinet to the compost heap.

Troubleshooting

The two questions that matter are how to get rid of it (slowly, by exhausting it) and whether a rosette is comfrey or foxglove (comfrey is bristly, foxglove is downy - if in doubt, discard it). Rust and slugs are the only real pests.

“Is this rosette comfrey or foxglove?” This is the one genuinely dangerous question on the page. Foxglove's first-year rosette closely resembles young comfrey, and people have died brewing it as tea. Comfrey leaves are coarsely bristly — noticeably rough and scratchy to the hand; foxglove leaves are soft and finely downy, with scalloped-toothed edges and a strongly netted pattern of veins underneath. If there is any doubt at all, discard the leaf. Better still, never plant foxglove anywhere near comfrey, and pull foxglove seedlings out of the comfrey patch on sight.

“How do I get rid of it?” Slowly, and by exhaustion rather than digging. Cut or mow every shoot off at ground level as soon as it appears, repeatedly, for a full season or two — you are starving the root, not removing it. Alternatively smother the ground with heavy cardboard and a thick mulch for a full year. Do not rototill, and do not settle for one thorough dig: both just distribute root fragments, each of which regrows.

Orange-brown pustules under the leaves: comfrey rust. It disfigures rather than kills. Cut the whole clump off at the crown, bin the foliage rather than composting it, and the regrowth usually comes back clean.

Ragged holes in the young leaves: slugs, on the softest spring growth. Rarely worth acting on — the plant outgrows them within weeks.

The clump flops open in the middle: it is overdue a cut. Take it down to a few inches and it regrows upright.

Seedlings appearing everywhere: you have seed-setting common comfrey rather than a Bocking cultivar. Cut each flush as it finishes flowering, and pull volunteers while they are small — once a seedling has made its own taproot it is a permanent resident.

The crown rotted over winter: winter wet, not cold. Replant on a slight rise or somewhere better drained.

Growing across climates

Hardy and adaptable from zone 3 to zone 9 - it takes cold, heat, clay and drought once established. The main regional differences are how many cuts a season you get and whether it goes fully dormant in winter.

Comfrey is one of the more climate-indifferent plants in the catalog, growing well from roughly zone 3 through zone 9. Its deep taproot buys it real drought tolerance once established, and the crown is hardy well below zero.

Zones 3-5: reliably hardy; the crown dies back completely and reappears in mid-spring. A shorter season means two or three cuts rather than four. Plant in spring rather than fall so the root is down before the first winter, and mulch new crowns their first year.

Zones 6-8: the sweet spot — three or four cuts a season, vigorous regrowth, and no particular management beyond keeping up with it.

Zone 9 and the hot South: comfrey takes the heat but often slows or goes semi-dormant through the hottest part of summer, then flushes again in fall. Give it afternoon shade and it holds up better; expect the main cuts in spring and autumn rather than midsummer.

Arid West: it will grow with irrigation and repays a deep soak between cuts, but it is not a dryland plant in the sense of thriving unwatered in the desert. Everywhere, the limiting factor is not cold or heat but winter wet: ground that stays saturated all winter rots the crown, so plant on a rise if that describes your site.
