Sweet chestnuts are food; horse chestnuts and buckeyes (Aesculus) are not, and eating those brings vomiting, cramps and worse - dogs are the usual casualty. Tell them apart by the husk: an edible chestnut burr is a dense hedgehog of fine, sharp, hair-like spines holding 2-3 flat-sided nuts, each with a pointed tip and a pale scar; a conker husk has thick, sparse, blunt spikes and one round glossy seed. Always cut a slit in the shell before roasting - sealed nuts burst. Discard any moldy nut.

Overview

The largest nut-tree gap in most American gardens: a fast, heavy-bearing, blight-resistant Chinese or hybrid chestnut that gives a starchy, sweet crop nothing else in the orchard produces.

Chestnuts are the odd one out among nuts. Where a walnut or a pecan is rich and oily, a chestnut is starchy, sweet and low in fat — closer to a potato or a grain than to any other nut, which is why it was a staple carbohydrate across southern Europe and eastern Asia long before it was a Christmas treat. A mature tree drops 50 to 100 pounds of nuts a year, begins bearing in three to five years from a grafted tree, and doubles as a handsome 40-60 foot shade tree.

What you plant matters more here than for almost any other fruit or nut. The native American chestnut (Castanea dentata), once one of the great trees of the eastern forest, was destroyed by an introduced fungal blight after 1904 and survives mostly as short-lived root sprouts — planting one is an act of hope, not an orchard decision. What home growers actually plant is the blight-resistant Chinese chestnut (C. mollissima) or an American-Chinese hybrid such as the Dunstan chestnuts. Both crop well and shrug off the blight that killed the native tree. Two rules govern success: plant two different trees, because a lone chestnut sets empty burrs, and pick the nuts up daily, because they are perishable and the squirrels are not patient.

Nuts can be sown where the tree is to grow, but they must never dry out and need cold stratification, which fall sowing provides. Protect each nut with hardware cloth - squirrels find them within days - and expect a seedling tree to fruit a couple of years later than a grafted one.

      Chestnuts are wind-pollinated and effectively self-sterile: a lone tree flowers heavily and sets empty burrs year after year. Plant at least two genetically different trees (two named varieties, or two seedlings) within about 100 feet of each other, and give each 30-40 feet of room.

      Long cream catkins cover the tree in early summer, carrying the male flowers, with the female flowers tucked at the base of the later ones. The fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica) that destroyed the American chestnut as a forest tree, killing an estimated three to four billion trees after arriving on imported nursery stock around 1904. It enters through wounds in the bark, grows in the living tissue, and forms a canker that expands until it girdles the stem - everything above the canker then wilts and dies while the roots stay alive and send up new sprouts, which get infected in their turn. Spores travel on wind, rain, insects, birds and pruning tools. The fungus is now endemic across the entire former range of the native tree, which is why species choice matters so much: Chinese chestnut and its hybrids tolerate infection and wall it off, while American and most European varieties do not.

Watch for: Sunken or swollen orange-brown to cinnamon patches on the bark, often cracked, sometimes with fine orange pimples on the surface. A branch whose leaves suddenly wilt, turn brown and hang on rather than dropping - then trace down the stem to find the canker below it. Fans of buff-colored fungal tissue under bark peeled back at the canker edge. Vigorous sprouting from the trunk or base below a dying top, which is the tree responding to being girdled.

Prevent: Plant blight-resistant stock: Chinese chestnut (C. mollissima) or American-Chinese hybrids such as the Dunstan types, especially anywhere in the former range of the American chestnut. Avoid the large European x Japanese varieties like Colossal east of the Rockies. Then minimize wounds, since the fungus needs one to get in: prune only in dry weather in late winter, keep mowers and trimmers away from the trunk, and cage against deer antler rubbing and rodent chewing. Disinfect pruning tools between trees. Keep trees unstressed - drought-stressed and poorly sited trees wall off infections less effectively.

Treat: There is no spray cure. Cut infected limbs out well below the visible canker, into clean wood, and burn or bin the prunings rather than leaving them under the tree. On a resistant Chinese or hybrid tree, cankers are commonly contained by the tree itself and the job is monitoring and pruning. On a susceptible tree the top is eventually lost whatever you do; the roots usually survive and resprout. Hypovirulence treatment - deliberately introducing a virus that weakens the fungus - is used in research and by some restoration groups but is not a practical home remedy.

The reason this catalog entry is about Chinese and hybrid chestnuts rather than the native tree. On a resistant tree, treat blight as an annual winter inspection job, not a catastrophe.

Chestnut Weevil High PestAug, Sep, Oct, Nov

Two long-snouted weevils (Curculio species) are the main insect pest of home chestnut crops. The adult drills through the developing burr and lays eggs inside the nut; the grub eats the kernel and then chews its way out after the nut has fallen, leaving a neat round hole and burrowing into the soil to pupate. Infested nuts often look perfect when gathered and reveal themselves in the kitchen or in storage a week later, which is why sorting and prompt refrigeration matter so much. Populations build year on year in an orchard where fallen nuts and burrs are left on the ground.

Watch for: Neat round exit holes about the size of a pencil lead in the shells, usually appearing days after harvest rather than at gathering time. Cream-colored, legless, C-shaped grubs inside cracked nuts. Nuts that float in the water test. Fine frass in a storage container. Adults - small weevils with a very long curved snout - on the burrs in late summer.

Prevent: Sanitation is the whole game. Gather nuts daily so grubs have no chance to exit into your soil, and clear every fallen burr and leftover nut at the end of the season rather than leaving them under the tree. Float-test every batch and discard the floaters. Then break the cycle in storage: refrigerating the crop promptly stops the grubs developing, and a brief hot-water dip (about 120°F for 20 minutes) before drying and refrigerating is the traditional home treatment.

Treat: Nothing rescues an infested nut - discard it, and do not compost it where the grub can reach soil. Because the larvae spend most of the year in the ground beneath the tree, keeping the ground clean and disturbed is the practical control; poultry ranging under the trees are genuinely effective at reducing populations. Insecticide programs exist for commercial orchards but are rarely worth it in a home planting where daily gathering and cold storage do most of the work.

The commonest disappointment in a first chestnut harvest. Float-test, refrigerate the same day, and clear the orchard floor in fall - do those three and the problem stays small.

Ink Disease (Phytophthora root rot) High DiseaseApr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep

A water-mold root and collar rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi and relatives) and the second great killer of chestnuts after blight - historically it destroyed chestnut orchards across the American South and southern Europe before blight ever arrived. It attacks the roots and root collar in wet, heavy or poorly drained soil, rotting the tissue and cutting off water to the crown, so the tree yellows, thins and dies from the top down over one or more seasons. The name comes from the blue-black staining and bleeding that appears at the base of an infected trunk. Chinese chestnut carries more resistance than American or European chestnut, but no chestnut survives waterlogged ground.

Watch for: Overall yellowing, undersized leaves, thin canopy and dieback starting at the top of the tree. Dark, inky, wet-looking staining or bleeding at the root collar and lower trunk. Reddish-brown discoloration under the bark at the base when cut into. Decline concentrated in low, wet or compacted parts of the site, and worsening after a wet season.

Prevent: Site selection is the whole defense, and it happens once. Plant on deep, well-drained, slightly acid sandy or loamy soil, preferably on a slope; never plant a chestnut in heavy clay, a low wet spot, or ground where water stands after rain. Do not overwater established trees or run irrigation against the trunk. Keep mulch pulled back from the root collar so it does not stay wet. Buy trees from a clean nursery, since the pathogen moves in infested soil and container media.

Treat: There is no practical cure once a tree is infected - improve drainage immediately, pull soil and mulch away from the collar, and stop supplemental water. A declining tree is usually lost, and replanting a chestnut into the same wet spot repeats the result; move to a well-drained site instead. This is a disease you prevent by where you dig the hole.

The reason this file insists on drainage and pH before anything else. Wet clay kills chestnuts as reliably as blight does, and far less dramatically.

Squirrels, Chipmunks & Voles High WildlifeJan, Feb, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

Squirrels are the single biggest obstacle between a home chestnut tree and a harvest. They start on the burrs while the nuts are still green, cut whole burrs off the tree, and clear the ground drop within a day - caching far more than they eat. Chipmunks and blue jays work the same crop. Because a mature chestnut is a 40-60 foot tree, none of the usual fruit defenses apply: there is nothing to net and nothing to cage. Voles are the other half of the problem and the more serious one for a young tree: they chew bark off the trunk at ground level under mulch and winter snow, and a stem girdled right around is dead in spring.

Watch for: Cut green burrs and shredded husks scattered under the tree well before the crop is ripe, and a canopy visibly thinning of burrs. A day's nut drop simply gone when you come out the next morning. Squirrels working the branches at dawn and dusk in September and October, and caching activity in nearby beds and lawn. On young trees, gnawed bark at the base, especially where mulch or long grass sits against the trunk, and vole runways showing when the snow melts.

Prevent: Gather every single day through the drop - promptness is the entire defense, and a drop left for two days is usually a drop lost. Some growers pick nearly-ripe burrs by hand and open them under cover to beat the wildlife outright. Keep the orchard floor short and clear so caching is less attractive and so you can see what has fallen. For voles, pull mulch and grass back from the trunk, fit a wire mesh guard around the base of every young tree, and keep the guard in place through winter. A metal trunk baffle can slow squirrels on a young tree, though it stops mattering once branches from anything else reach the canopy.

Treat: There is no way to exclude squirrels from an open, mature nut tree, so the realistic answer is speed and volume: gather daily, plant more than one tree, and accept a share going to wildlife. Trapping is largely futile, since new squirrels move into cleared territory within weeks. Vole damage is the one you can act on - clear cover, fit guards, and check young trunks each winter; a tree girdled all the way round rarely recovers, so this is prevention rather than treatment.

Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.

Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.

Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.

Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.

Young chestnuts are at real risk for their first several years: browsing checks growth, and autumn antler rubbing on a sapling trunk kills it outright. Cage every young trunk from planting day and leave the cage on until the bark is thick and the canopy is above reach. Deer also clean up fallen nuts, which matters less.

Asian Chestnut Gall Wasp Medium PestMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

A tiny introduced wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) whose larvae cause swollen green-to-reddish galls on developing buds, shoots and leaf stalks. Galled shoots never extend properly, so a heavily infested tree loses much of its new growth, sets few nuts, and declines over several seasons. It spread through the southeastern US after arriving in Georgia in the 1970s and is the reason several states regulate the movement of chestnut nursery stock - the wasp travels inside dormant buds on nursery trees.

Watch for: Round or irregular green, pink or reddish swellings at bud, shoot and leaf-stalk positions in late spring and early summer, later drying to hard brown woody galls that persist on the twigs. Shoots that fail to elongate, with tufted, distorted leaves. A noticeable drop in nut set on an otherwise healthy tree. Old dry galls still on the twigs in winter.

Prevent: Buy nursery stock from a reputable source and check your state's rules on moving chestnut planting material, since the wasp is carried in dormant buds. Prune out and destroy galled shoots in late winter before the adults emerge in early summer. Keep trees vigorous - a strong tree tolerates a moderate infestation. Some Chinese cultivars are notably more tolerant than others; ask the nursery.

Treat: There is no effective home spray, because the larvae are protected inside the gall for most of their life. Pruning out galls before emergence is the practical measure. In much of the infested range the parasitic wasp Torymus sinensis, introduced for biological control, has substantially reduced gall wasp populations over time, so an outbreak that looks alarming often subsides across several seasons.

Rarely kills a tree but can suppress growth and nut set for a few years. Winter is the easy time to spot and prune out old galls.

Choose a blight-resistant Chinese or hybrid tree, give it deep, well-drained acid soil and full sun, and plant two different trees 30-40 feet apart - a single chestnut will not set nuts.

Start with the type. In almost all of the US the right choice is a Chinese chestnut or a Chinese-American hybrid, because both carry real blight resistance. The huge-nutted European x Japanese varieties like Colossal crop beautifully on the West Coast, where blight pressure is low, and decline in the East, where it is not. Buy from a nursery that names the species or the parentage, and check whether your state restricts the movement of chestnut nursery stock — several regulate it because of the Asian chestnut gall wasp.

Site them in full sun on deep, well-drained sandy or loamy ground at pH 5.0-6.5. Chestnuts hate wet feet and lime; heavy clay and high-pH soils invite Phytophthora ink disease, which rots the root collar and kills trees outright. A gentle slope is ideal. Space trees 30-40 feet apart and plant at least two genetically different ones — chestnuts are wind-pollinated and effectively self-sterile, so a solitary tree flowers gloriously and produces empty burrs. Plant at the depth the tree grew, water it in, mulch a wide ring while keeping the mulch off the trunk, and cage the trunk against deer and voles from day one.

Care

Water through the first three summers and any August drought, prune lightly to a central leader in late winter, keep mulch off the trunk, and inspect the bark each winter for blight cankers.

Chestnuts are undemanding once established. Water young trees deeply every week or so through their first three summers, and give established trees a soaking during an August drought, since nut fill happens late in the season. Feed lightly if at all — a young tree benefits from a spring nitrogen dose, a bearing tree in decent soil rarely needs anything, and heavy feeding produces soft growth. Keep a wide mulched, weed-free ring, but hold the mulch back from the trunk, where it invites voles and collar rot.

Prune in late winter, and lightly: train a young tree to a single central leader with well-spaced scaffold branches, then afterwards remove only dead, crossing or crowded wood. Chestnuts bear on new shoots arising from year-old wood, so hard heading cuts remove next year's crop. The one recurring job is inspection. Walk the tree each winter with the leaves off and look for sunken or swollen orange-brown cankers on the bark, which are chestnut blight; cut infected limbs out well below the canker and destroy the wood. In summer, look for the swollen green galls of the Asian chestnut gall wasp on shoots and leaf bases. On a resistant tree both are manageable irritations rather than a death sentence.

Harvest

Ripe burrs split and drop the nuts; gather from the ground every day, wear gloves, float-test to cull the duds, then cure at room temperature for a few days to sweeten before refrigerating.

Harvest is a matter of discipline rather than skill. In September and October the spiny burrs split open on the tree and the nuts fall over a two-to-four-week window. Gather every day. Chestnuts hold a lot of moisture, so nuts left on damp ground mold within days, and squirrels will clear a drop before you get out there twice. Wear thick gloves or use tongs and a boot to open the burrs — the spines are genuinely vicious, quite unlike the smooth husk of a horse chestnut.

Sort as you go with the float test: drop the nuts into a bucket of water and discard anything that floats, which is dried, empty, or has a weevil grub in it. Then cure the sound nuts for three to seven days at room temperature in a single layer or a mesh bag. Curing converts some of the starch to sugar, and it is the difference between a bland chestnut and a sweet one. After curing, refrigerate them — and see Storage, because this is where most first-time growers lose their crop. Expect the first small harvest three to five years after planting a grafted tree, and full crops from around year ten.

Storage

Treat them as fresh produce, not as nuts: refrigerate in a perforated bag for a couple of months, freeze for a year, or dry and mill into flour - never leave them in a bowl on the counter.

This is the fact that surprises everyone: a fresh chestnut is about 50% water, which makes it perishable like an apple rather than shelf-stable like a walnut. Left in a bowl on the counter it dries out, hardens and molds within a week or two. Store the cured crop in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator, where sound nuts keep for two to three months; check them over occasionally and remove any that soften or show mold.

For longer keeping there are three good routes. Freezing is easiest — freeze them whole in the shell, or better, score, roast, peel and then freeze the kernels, which keeps a year and saves you the peeling later. Drying is the traditional method: dried chestnuts keep for a year or more at room temperature and are rehydrated by soaking, or milled into the sweet, gluten-free chestnut flour that underpins a whole family of Italian and Corsican breads and cakes. Canning in a pressure canner works too. Whatever you choose, decide quickly — the crop does not wait, and a bucket of chestnuts left at room temperature for a fortnight is a bucket of mold.

In the kitchen

Score the shells and roast them - always score, or they explode - then peel while hot. Beyond roasting they go into stuffing, soup, purée, candied marrons and gluten-free flour.

One rule comes before every recipe: cut a slit through the shell of every nut before you apply heat. A sealed chestnut turns its moisture to steam and bursts, in an oven, a pan or a fire. Score an X on the flat side, roast at around 400°F for 15-25 minutes until the shells curl back, then wrap the hot nuts in a towel for a few minutes and peel them while they are hot — both the shell and the bitter inner skin (the pellicle) come away easily hot and become a battle cold. Boiling for 15-20 minutes works equally well and gives a softer nut.

From there chestnuts are one of the most versatile things in an autumn kitchen. They go into stuffing with sausage and sage, into a silky soup with leek and cream, into braises with red cabbage or brussels sprouts, and into purée sweet or savory. Candied whole in syrup they become marrons glacés; milled dry they make a sweet, nutty, naturally gluten-free flour for Italian castagnaccio, Corsican pulenda, crêpes and cakes. Because they are starchy rather than oily they behave in the kitchen much more like a potato or a bean than like an almond — and unlike most nuts, they are not eaten raw in quantity, being tannic and hard to digest that way. People with a latex allergy should note that chestnut is one of the foods that can cross-react.

Nutrition

The nut that is not really a nut nutritionally: low in fat, high in complex carbohydrate and fiber, gluten-free, and the only nut with a meaningful amount of vitamin C.

Chestnuts sit apart from every other nut on the nutrition table. Where almonds and walnuts run 50-70% fat, a chestnut is roughly 2% fat and mostly complex carbohydrate, with about 200 calories in a hundred grams of roasted kernels — a fraction of what the same weight of walnuts delivers. They carry useful fiber, potassium, copper, manganese, B vitamins (notably B6 and folate), and, uniquely among nuts, a genuinely meaningful amount of vitamin C, though roasting reduces it.

They are also naturally gluten-free, which is why chestnut flour has a long history as a bread and cake flour in mountain regions where wheat would not grow, and why it has found a modern audience. In practical terms: treat chestnuts as a starchy food rather than as a fatty snack nut. That is what made them a staple crop for centuries in Italy, Corsica, Portugal, Japan and China — the tree was called the bread tree in parts of southern Europe for exactly this reason.

Troubleshooting

Empty burrs mean only one tree; wilting branches with orange cankers mean blight; small holes and grubs in the nuts mean weevils; moldy nuts mean they were not gathered daily and refrigerated.

Heavy flowering, burrs that fall empty or flat: almost always pollination — you need a second, genetically different chestnut within about 100 feet. Young trees also drop under-filled burrs for their first year or two of bearing. A branch wilts, leaves turn brown and hang on, and the bark below has a sunken or swollen orange-brown cracked patch: chestnut blight — cut well below the canker and destroy the wood; on a resistant Chinese or hybrid tree this is usually containable. Whole tree yellows, thins and declines, with black staining or bleeding at the root collar: Phytophthora ink disease, driven by wet, poorly drained or limey soil — there is no cure, so drainage and site selection are everything. Nuts with neat round holes, or grubs when you crack them: chestnut weevil — float-test, refrigerate promptly, and clear all fallen nuts and burrs at the end of the season. Swollen green or reddish galls on shoots and leaf stalks, poor growth, few nuts: Asian chestnut gall wasp. Nuts go moldy or rock-hard within a week: they were not refrigerated — chestnuts are half water and behave like fresh fruit. Nuts explode in the oven: they were not scored. Tree grows for years and never fruits: too young, too shaded, or a lone tree - check all three.

Growing across climates

Chinese chestnut suits zones 4/5-8 and wants real summer heat to fill nuts; blight pressure in the East decides the type you plant, and the West Coast is where the big European hybrids belong.

Zones 4-5: the cold edge for Chinese chestnut — it survives to around -20°F but needs a long enough warm season to ripen nuts, so choose early-maturing selections and a warm, sheltered site; hybrids with American parentage tend to be the hardiest. Zones 5-8: the heartland. Chinese chestnut and Dunstan-type hybrids crop reliably across the Midwest, the mid-Atlantic and the upland South, and the summer heat these zones supply is exactly what fills the nuts. Zones 8-9: workable in the upper South with adequate winter chill, but heat and humidity increase disease pressure and the far Gulf Coast is marginal. Pacific Coast (zones 7-9): a different world — blight pressure is low, and this is where the huge-nutted European x Japanese varieties like Colossal are grown commercially. Those same varieties are a poor bet east of the Rockies.

The controlling variable across most of the country is not cold but blight, and after that drainage: chestnut blight is endemic throughout the former range of the American chestnut, so type selection is a climate decision as much as a taste one, and Phytophthora ink disease follows wet, heavy, poorly drained soils regardless of zone.

Propagation & seed saving

Nuts grow easily but must never dry out and need cold stratification; grafting is notoriously fussy, which is why most home chestnuts are seedlings of a named parent.

Chestnuts grow readily from nuts, with one absolute rule: the nut must never dry out. A chestnut that has sat on a counter is dead, whatever it looks like. Collect fresh nuts, float-test them, then either sow them where the tree is to grow in fall or stratify them in barely damp peat or sawdust in a bag in the refrigerator for two to three months and sow in spring. Protect every sown nut with hardware cloth, because squirrels find them almost immediately. Seedlings vary — they will not be identical to the parent — but seedlings of a good Chinese or hybrid parent are how most home chestnut plantings are made, and their variability is an advantage for the cross-pollination you need anyway.

Grafting chestnut is possible but notoriously unreliable, with delayed graft-union failure a well-known problem in the genus, which is why named grafted varieties are less dominant here than in apples. Buy grafted trees for earlier bearing and a known nut, or seedlings for vigor and economy. Two more practical notes: check your state's rules before ordering or moving chestnut planting stock, since several regulate it for the Asian chestnut gall wasp; and if you want to support American chestnut restoration, plant Chinese or hybrid trees for nuts and get involved with an organized breeding program rather than planting a pure C. dentata and expecting it to survive.

History

An introduced fungus killed an estimated three to four billion American chestnuts in half a century - the greatest ecological disaster in US forest history - and everything about how we grow chestnuts today follows from it.

The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once one of the defining trees of the eastern forest: in parts of Appalachia perhaps one tree in four, straight-grained, rot-resistant, and dropping such reliable crops that it fed people, hogs and wildlife alike. Then in 1904 a dying tree in the New York Zoological Park was found to be infected with an Asian fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, imported on nursery stock. Within about fifty years the blight had killed an estimated three to four billion trees across the tree's entire range — the largest ecological catastrophe in the history of American forests.

The species is not extinct. The fungus kills the trunk but not the root system, so American chestnut survives as sprouts that grow for a decade or two, sometimes flower, and then die back again. Recovery work has run for a century: breeding programs that cross the American tree with blight-resistant Chinese chestnut and then backcross toward American form, hybrid selections like the Dunstan chestnuts that came out of that work and are widely planted for nuts, and modern biotechnology approaches that have advanced and stumbled in turn. Meanwhile the practical American orchard chestnut became the Chinese chestnut, imported for exactly the resistance the native tree lacked.
