American Basswood
Basswood is non-toxic and safe to handle. Its young spring leaves are among the best wild salad greens in North America - mild, tender, slightly mucilaginous - and the summer flowers make linden tea, a traditional calming brew. Two mild cautions: the tea is genuinely relaxing and can make you drowsy, so go easy before driving, and anyone with a heart condition or on heart medication should ask a doctor first. Pick only from unsprayed trees, and skip flowers coated in sticky aphid honeydew.
Overview
The bee tree: for two weeks each summer a basswood in bloom hums audibly and out-produces every other nectar source in the eastern woods. It also hosts well over a hundred caterpillar species, and its young leaves are the best wild salad green in North America.
American basswood (Tilia americana) is the great nectar tree of the eastern woods. For roughly two weeks in late June or early July it hangs thick with small, pale-yellow, intensely fragrant flowers, and a mature tree in bloom is audible from yards away — beekeepers call it the bee tree, and basswood honey is a named variety with its own pale color and sharp, minty bite. There is very little else a gardener can plant that delivers that much forage at once.
It is a host tree too, feeding well over a hundred species of native caterpillars and, through them, the songbirds that raise their young on caterpillars. And it is unusually generous to people: the young spring leaves are among the best wild salad greens on the continent — mild, tender, and slightly mucilaginous, with none of the bitterness of most tree leaves — and the flowers dry into linden tea, the tilleul drunk across Europe as a calming evening brew.
Beyond that it is simply a fine shade tree: a straight-trunked 60-90 foot native with huge lopsided heart-shaped leaves, clear yellow fall color, and a lifespan around 150 years. The soft, even-grained wood is the classic carver's timber, and the fibrous inner bark — the bast that gives the tree its name — was made into rope for thousands of years. Its two real demands: moist, fertile soil, and a cage against deer, which eat basswood before almost anything else.

Japanese Beetles High
Japanese beetles are metallic green-and-copper beetles about half an inch long that emerge in early summer and feed for six to eight weeks. They feed in aggregating masses - one beetle's feeding releases a scent that draws in more - so a plant goes from untouched to covered in a couple of days. They chew the soft tissue between the leaf veins and leave the veins standing, so the leaf ends up as a brown lace skeleton, and they shred open flowers and sometimes ripening fruit as well. They work the sunniest upper parts of a plant on warm afternoons. The white C-shaped grubs spend the rest of the year in turf and pasture soil eating grass roots, and the adults then fly in from wherever they hatched, which can be some distance away.
Watch for: Clusters of shiny metallic beetles massed together on the upper, sunniest foliage and down inside open blooms, heaviest on warm sunny afternoons from around late June. Leaves reduced to lace, with the veins left intact and the tissue between them gone - unmistakable, and quite different from the ragged chewing of a caterpillar. Ragged, chewed petals and blooms that never open properly. Beetles that let go and drop straight to the ground when you disturb the plant. Feeding damage on ripening fruit, on the plants they also take fruit from. Whole branches going brown and lacy at the top of a plant while the shaded lower growth stays untouched.
Prevent: Hand-picking is genuinely the main defense in a home garden. Go out in the cool of the morning while the beetles are sluggish, hold a tub of soapy water underneath, and knock them in - they drop when disturbed, so most fall straight into it. Do it daily through the flight: because the beetles call each other in, taking them off early stops a plant becoming a beacon. Do not put pheromone or lure traps anywhere near the garden - they demonstrably pull in far more beetles than they catch. And do not count on lawn grub control: milky spore has performed poorly and inconsistently in field trials across most of the US, and treating your own turf does not reduce the adults feeding on your plants, because they fly in from surrounding properties. Where it is practical, row cover or netting through the peak flight excludes them outright. Otherwise riding out the six-to-eight-week wave is a legitimate strategy, since most established plants absorb the damage.
Treat: Persistent morning hand-picking into soapy water is the most effective home control there is, and on a vigorous established plant the damage is usually cosmetic and needs nothing else. Neem deters feeding rather than killing, and has to be reapplied. For heavy pressure, spinosad or a targeted insecticide labeled for the plant will work - but time any spray away from bloom and apply it at dusk to protect bees, and observe the pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. On flowering plants, some gardeners simply shear the blooms off for a couple of weeks and let the plant rebloom once the wave has passed, which removes the lure as well as the damage. Young plants and young trees are the ones worth defending: a mature tree or an established vine tolerates several weeks of leaf loss without lasting harm.
Linden is one of the beetles' most preferred trees and the top of the crown is routinely laced by mid-July. Ride it out on a mature tree - the damage is cosmetic and the leaves are already made. Do NOT use a soil-applied systemic here: basswood is one of the heaviest bee-forage trees there is, and a systemic ends up in the nectar. Hand-pick what you can reach on a young tree.
Deer (browse resistance) High
Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.
Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.
Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.
Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.
Basswood is among the most preferred deer browse in eastern North America - so preferred that in overbrowsed woodlands it stops regenerating altogether and the canopy trees are never replaced. Treat a cage as part of planting the tree, not as an option, and leave it on until the lowest branches are above reach and the trunk is too thick to rub.
Aphids Medium
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
The linden aphid is the reason nobody parks under a linden. It does the tree little harm but rains honeydew for weeks, glazing everything below and turning it sooty black, and it will spoil any flowers you meant to dry for tea. Nothing sprayed on a big tree fixes it and predators usually catch up by midsummer - so treat it as a siting rule, and pick your tea flowers from a clean branch or a clean year.
Leaf Scorch (sun & drought) Medium
Leaf scorch is not a disease and there is nothing to spray for it. It is what happens when a leaf loses water faster than the roots can replace it: the tissue farthest from the veins - the margins and the tips - dries out first and turns brown and papery, and the browning works inward while the rest of the leaf stays green. Hot sun, dry soil, drying wind, heat reflected off paving or a wall, a small or damaged root system, and a plant sited somewhere sunnier or drier than it wants are the usual causes, singly or together. It also happens in winter on evergreens, when bright sun and wind pull water out of the leaves while the ground is frozen and the roots cannot resupply. Shade and woodland plants, shallow-rooted plants, and anything recently planted scorch most easily.
Watch for: Browning that starts at the leaf edges and tips and spreads inward, with a fairly sharp line between the crisp brown tissue and the green that is still healthy. Leaves and fronds going dry, papery, and crisp rather than soft, yellow, or spotted - that is what separates this from a fungal problem. Damage worst on the side of the plant facing the sun or the prevailing wind and on the most exposed upper leaves, while the shaded interior stays fine. Symptoms appearing sharply after a heat wave, a dry spell, or a bright windy week in winter. Whole leaves or fronds shed early as the plant cuts its losses.
Prevent: Site the plant where it actually wants to be. This is a placement problem far more often than a watering problem, and a shade plant in hot afternoon sun will scorch every summer however much you water it. Give shade and woodland plants part-to-full shade and shelter from hot afternoon sun and drying wind. Keep the root zone consistently moist and mulch it well with leaf litter or another organic mulch, which holds water and keeps the roots cool - the single most useful routine step. Water deeply and thoroughly during dry spells rather than little and often, so moisture reaches the whole root zone. Pay particular attention through the first year after planting, when the root system is small and cannot keep up with the leaves. On evergreens in cold regions, make sure the plant goes into winter well watered, and keep it out of bright, windy, exposed positions.
Treat: Water deeply, mulch, and improve the shade - that is the whole treatment, because there is nothing here to kill. Leaves that are already scorched will not recover, so trim off badly browned foliage or fronds for appearance if you want to; the crown and roots are usually unharmed and push out fresh growth once conditions improve. On a plant that scorches badly every year the answer is to move it rather than to keep watering harder, because the siting is what is wrong. Some plants respond well to being cut back hard, which brings a clean flush of new foliage. And on plants that naturally die back or brown off late in the season, scorching at the end of a dry summer is normal and needs nothing at all.
Basswood's huge soft leaves scorch readily, and browned margins with early August leaf drop are the standard sign of a tree on too dry or too exposed a site. Widen the mulch ring, take the turf out from under the canopy, and soak the root zone deeply through dry spells. A basswood that scorches every year is telling you the site is wrong.
Verticillium Wilt Low
A soil fungus (Verticillium dahliae and relatives) that enters through the roots and grows upward inside the water-conducting tissue, plugging it from within. The plant is not being eaten or rotted, it is being cut off from its own water supply, which is why the signature symptom is one branch or one side wilting and browning while the rest looks perfectly healthy. Cut into affected wood or stem and the tissue is streaked olive-green, grey or brown. The host range is enormous - maples, redbud, olive, tomato, potato, pepper, eggplant, strawberry and many more - and the fungus survives in soil for years as tough resting structures, so infected ground stays infected. Grasses and conifers do not get it.
Watch for: One branch, one limb or one side of a plant wilting, yellowing and browning in summer while the rest carries on normally - the lopsided pattern is the tell - and leaves that wilt and then hang on rather than dropping cleanly. Cut into affected wood and look for olive-green, grey or brown streaking along the grain; in a cut vegetable stem it shows as a ring of discolored dots. On vegetables, lower leaves yellow in a wedge from the margin inward, and the plant wilts at midday but recovers overnight in the early stages.
Prevent: There is no way to sterilize garden soil of it, so prevention is plant choice and plant vigor. Do not replant a susceptible species where one has already died of it. Grasses, conifers, ginkgo, hawthorn, hornbeam, honeylocust, oak and beech do not get it, and many vegetable varieties carry bred-in resistance - the V in a VFN code on the seed packet. Rotate susceptible vegetables on a long cycle and keep them off ground where the disease has shown. Buy clean stock, avoid wounding roots with spades and machinery, and keep woody plants steadily watered, mulched and only lightly fed, because a vigorous plant walls the fungus off far better than a stressed one.
Treat: There is no cure and nothing to spray. On a tree or shrub the aim is to keep it alive long enough to compartmentalize the fungus, which many plants manage for years: prune out dead and wilting branches well below the discolored wood, sanitize the pruners between cuts, water deeply through dry spells, mulch, and feed lightly rather than pushing it with a heavy feed. On vegetables, pull and bin affected plants rather than composting them, and move that crop to clean ground or to containers of fresh mix. Do not replant the same species where one has died.
Uncommon on basswood and rarely fatal - the tree usually walls the fungus off and carries on. If a single limb wilts and dies in midsummer, prune it out well below the streaking, sterilize the saw, and concentrate on watering and mulching rather than on any treatment.

The European linden that most American nurseries and city foresters actually plant - neat, dense, small-leaved, and tolerant of tough urban sites. Plant the native where you have the choice.

Grow
Deep, moist, fertile soil and room for a 60-90 foot tree. It takes sun or part shade and is genuinely easy - the two things that defeat it are drought and deer, and both have straightforward answers.
Basswood is a forest tree of rich, moist ground, and it grows best if you give it something like that: deep, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soil, slightly acid to neutral. It will accept clay and a range of conditions, but unlike hackberry or oak it does not shrug off drought — its big soft leaves brown at the edges and drop early in a dry summer. Water a young tree weekly for its first three years and soak an established one in long dry spells.
It is flexible about light: full sun gives the best form and the heaviest bloom, but basswood is genuinely shade-tolerant as a seedling and will grow in part shade at a woodland edge. Give it room — 60 to 90 feet tall and 40 to 60 wide at maturity — and site it back from the house, since this becomes a large tree with a dense crown.
The one thing that most often kills a young basswood is deer. It is among the most preferred browse species in eastern North America, to the point that in overbrowsed woodlands basswood simply stops regenerating. Cage a new tree properly and leave the cage on for years.
Two siting notes. Basswood sprouts freely from the base, so decide early whether you want a single trunk (rub the sprouts off annually) or the natural multi-stemmed clump. And like linden generally it can drip aphid honeydew, so do not plant one directly over a patio, a walk, or where you park.
Care
Water in drought, mulch widely, keep the deer cage on for years, and prune lightly in late winter. Never spray a tree this attractive to bees, and manage basal sprouts by choice rather than neglect.
An established basswood asks for little beyond water in dry weather and a wide mulch ring to keep its roots cool and moist and mowers off its bark. Prune lightly, in late winter: dead, damaged, and crossing wood, plus whatever basal sprouts you have decided not to keep. Heavy cutting only provokes more sprouting, and the tree needs almost no shaping.
The one rule to take absolutely seriously is do not spray this tree, and that includes preventive soil-applied systemic insecticides. Basswood is the single heaviest bee-forage tree in much of its range, and any systemic it takes up ends in the nectar that thousands of bees are drinking. It is also a host tree feeding a hundred-plus caterpillar species, so chewed leaves are the point. If Japanese beetles lace the upper canopy in July, which they very often do on linden, a mature tree tolerates it — hand-pick what you can reach on a young one and otherwise let the six-week wave pass.
Aphids and honeydew are the other predictable nuisance: sticky leaves, black sooty mold, and a glazed car underneath. Nothing you spray on a large tree fixes it, natural predators catch up by midsummer, and the real answer is where you planted it. Keep the deer cage on a young tree until the trunk is thick and the branches are above browse height — autumn antler rubbing kills more young basswoods than browsing does.
Harvest
Two harvests, both short. Young leaves for salad in the first weeks after leaf-out, and flowers for linden tea during the roughly two-week bloom in early summer - taking a modest share and leaving the rest to the bees.
Basswood gives two harvests and both have narrow windows.
Young leaves, in the first few weeks after leaf-out, are one of the genuine finds of North American foraging: mild, sweet, tender, faintly mucilaginous, and completely un-bitter — better than most cultivated salad greens and pleasant enough to eat by the handful straight off the branch. Pick them while they are pale, soft, and no bigger than your palm; within a few weeks they toughen into something papery and dull. Low branches, basal sprouts, and young saplings are the easiest source, and a mature tree offers little in reach.
Flowers come in late June or early July and last about two weeks. Pick on a dry morning once the pale-yellow flowers are fully open but before any browning, taking the whole cluster together with its strap-shaped papery bract, which is dried along with the flowers in the traditional preparation. Take a modest share from low branches and leave the rest — the bees got there first, and this is their most important two weeks of the year. Skip anything sticky with aphid honeydew; it will not dry properly and it tastes of sooty mold.
The third harvest is not food. The fibrous inner bark, or bast, retts in water into strong cordage, but take it only from felled trees or pruned limbs — stripping bark from a living trunk girdles and kills it.
Storage
Flowers dry easily in a few days out of direct sun and keep about a year as tea. Leaves do not store and must be used fresh. Seed is doubly dormant and slow, so sow it in fall and expect to wait two winters.
Flowers store beautifully and that is the point of picking them. Spread the clusters, bracts and all, in a single layer on a screen or paper somewhere warm, airy, and out of direct sun; they are dry in three to five days, when the flowers rustle and the bract snaps rather than bends. Store them whole in a sealed jar in the dark and crumble as you brew. They keep their fragrance for about a year, after which the tea flattens out — pick fresh each summer rather than hoarding. A dehydrator on its lowest setting works if your weather is humid, but heat drives off the aroma, so low and slow.
Young leaves do not store. They wilt within a day and dry to nothing worth eating, so treat them as a fresh, few-weeks-a-year green.
Seed is the awkward part. Basswood nutlets have a double dormancy — a hard, nearly waterproof coat plus a dormant embryo — and seed left dry on a shelf becomes even harder to start. Gather the clusters in fall, keep them cool and slightly moist, and sow them promptly in a protected nursery bed, expecting many to sit through two winters before germinating.
Propagation & seed saving
Seed is notoriously slow - a double dormancy that usually means two winters outdoors. Far easier is to lift one of the basal sprouts a mature basswood throws up in a ring around its trunk, or simply to buy nursery stock.
Seed is the honest answer and the frustrating one. Basswood nutlets carry a double dormancy: a hard, almost impermeable seed coat and a dormant embryo that needs a long cold period. Sown outdoors in fall in a protected nursery bed, most seed sits through two winters before coming up. Nurseries speed this with acid scarification followed by three or four months of cold-moist stratification, which is fiddly and hazardous to do at home; gentle mechanical nicking plus a long chill is a safer home approximation, with a low strike rate. Screen the bed against mice and squirrels either way.
There is a much easier route. Basswood sprouts vigorously from the base, and mature trees are typically ringed by a cluster of young stems — in old woods you often find a ring of trunks marking a parent that died a century ago. Lift a rooted sprout in early spring while it is dormant and still small, take as much root as you can, and plant it immediately into moist ground with a deer cage over it. Layering works on the same principle: peg a low flexible branch into the soil, keep it damp, and sever it once it has rooted.
For anything more than an experiment, nursery stock is the practical choice, and it is also how you get the tidier selections like 'Redmond' or 'American Sentry'.
In the kitchen
Young leaves are a genuinely good salad green - mild, sweet, slightly slippery - and the dried flowers make linden tea, a pale golden, honey-scented infusion drunk across Europe as an evening brew. Basswood honey is its own named variety.
Linden tea is the famous one. Steep a generous pinch of dried flowers and bracts in water just off the boil, covered, for five to ten minutes; the result is pale gold, delicately honey-and-blossom scented, faintly sweet, and best drunk plain or with a little honey. In France it is tilleul, the standard after-dinner and bedtime infusion — the tea of Proust's madeleine — and it is drunk the same way across Spain, Italy, Turkey, and much of central Europe. It has a mild relaxing effect, which is exactly why people drink it at night; see the safety note before making it a daily habit.
Young leaves deserve more attention than they get. Picked small they are sweet, tender, and slightly slippery, and they work as the base of a salad rather than as a garnish, dress well with oil and vinegar, and make an excellent soft wrap for a small filling. The mucilage that makes them faintly slick also thickens a soup nicely if you shred them in at the end. Cooked, they behave a little like young mallow leaves — basswood is, taxonomically, in the mallow family.
Basswood honey is worth seeking out if you keep bees or shop for local honey: pale, almost water-white, with a strong, bright, faintly minty bite that is unmistakable and quite unlike clover honey. A single good basswood bloom can fill supers in a fortnight.
Ecology & wildlife value
The heaviest nectar tree in the eastern woods and a host for well over a hundred caterpillar species. Its seed, cavities, and browse feed everything from bees to bears - and deer eat it so preferentially that it fails to regenerate in overbrowsed forests.
Basswood's headline contribution is nectar. Few plants in North America produce as much, as concentrated, in as short a time: for about two weeks a mature tree in bloom supports an enormous population of honeybees, bumblebees, solitary bees, flies, and beetles, and beekeepers move hives specifically for the basswood flow. Because it blooms in the midsummer gap, after the spring trees and before the goldenrod, it fills a real hole in the pollinator calendar.
As a host tree it feeds well over a hundred species of native caterpillars — the linden looper is the one gardeners actually notice — and those caterpillars are what the songbirds nesting in the canopy feed to their chicks. Basswoods also rot and hollow readily as they age, making them one of the best cavity trees in the eastern forest for owls, woodpeckers, wood ducks, squirrels, raccoons, and bears.
Deer are the complicating factor. Basswood is among the most preferred browse in eastern North America, so palatable that in heavily browsed woodlands it disappears from the understory entirely and the canopy trees are never replaced. Planting one and caging it properly is a small act of forest restoration, not just gardening.
For people, the food value is modest but real: the young leaves supply the vitamins and minerals of any fresh green with a useful dose of soothing mucilage, and the tea is essentially calories-free.
History
The bast that gave the tree its name was rope for thousands of years; the wood is the carver's standard and the bee's hive frame; and tilleul has been Europe's evening tea for centuries.
The name says what mattered first. Bast — the tough fibrous inner bark — was retted in water for weeks, peeled into strands, and twisted into rope, netting, snowshoe lacing, mats, and baskets by Indigenous peoples across the tree's range, and the same practice with European lime is ancient enough to leave archaeological traces. “Basswood” is simply bast-wood. The Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and many others used it for cordage, for carving, and for the soft wood's fire-starting drill.
The wood itself found its own trades. Pale, odorless, fine-grained, and soft without being weak, it is the standard carving timber of North America — the wood of decoys, relief panels, and beginners' whittling — and it is used for guitar bodies, window blinds, drawing boards, and the frames inside beehives, which is a pleasing loop for the bee tree.
In Europe, Tilia took a different cultural path. Lime trees were planted at village centers and along the great avenues of Berlin and Vienna, and the flowers became tilleul, the calming evening infusion drunk from France to Turkey for centuries and the tea Proust's narrator soaks a madeleine in. American basswood inherited both traditions: the fiber and carving uses of the Northeast woodlands, and the tea and honey culture of the European lime.
Troubleshooting
Most basswood problems are nuisances, not threats: honeydew, Japanese beetles, basal sprouts, browning leaf edges in drought. The two that actually matter are deer on a young tree and, on street lindens, the dead bumblebees people ask about.
Everything under the tree is sticky and turning black: aphid honeydew and the sooty mold that grows on it — a classic linden complaint. It does the tree no real harm, predators usually catch up by midsummer, and nothing you spray on a large tree will fix it. Treat it as a siting lesson: not over a patio, a walk, or a parking spot.
Upper leaves reduced to brown lace in July: Japanese beetles, which strongly prefer linden. A mature tree tolerates it; hand-pick reachable branches on a young one, and never use a systemic on a tree bees are working.
A young tree stripped or its bark shredded: deer. Basswood is one of their favorite foods, and autumn antler rubbing kills more young trees than browsing. Cage it, and leave the cage on for years.
Leaf edges browning, leaves dropping in August: drought. Basswood's big soft leaves cannot keep up in a dry summer — water deeply, mulch wide, and remove competing turf.
Sprouts ringing the trunk: normal and vigorous. Cut them annually for a single trunk, or keep three or four for a clump.
Dead bumblebees on the ground beneath a linden: a real and much-discussed sight, mainly under silver linden (T. tomentosa) rather than American basswood. The old explanation — that the nectar is toxic — has largely been disproven; the current reading is that these enormously attractive trees draw huge numbers of bees late in the season and the nectar runs out, so exhausted bees starve beneath them. Planting other late-summer flowers nearby is the useful response.
Growing across climates
Cold-hardy and reliable from zone 2 through zone 8 across the eastern and central states, wherever soil is deep and moist. Its limits are drought and heat, not cold - in the hot, dry Plains and the Deep South it struggles.
American basswood is a northern-leaning tree with a wide range. Zones 2-4: completely at home; this is a major component of the northern hardwood forest across the Upper Midwest, northern New England, and southern Canada, and it takes brutal cold without difficulty. Zones 4-6: its heartland — a fast-growing, dependable, long-lived shade and nectar tree wherever the soil is deep and moist. Zones 7-8: workable in cool, moist, sheltered sites, but heat and drought become the limiting factors and the tree is less vigorous; in the South, the Carolina basswood form (T. americana var. caroliniana) is the better-adapted native.
The constraint is moisture, not cold. Basswood needs deep, fertile, reliably moist ground and suffers visibly in drought — browned leaf margins, early leaf drop, and long-term decline on thin or exposed sites. It is a poor choice for the dry western Plains, for hot exposed parking-lot conditions, and for anywhere with shallow soil over rock. Wind and salt are not its friends either. Give it a moist, sheltered, fertile spot with room to grow and it will outlive you; put it in a hot dry one and it will always look tired.
