Beyond the fruit, the plant offers more: the purple flower bud (banana blossom) is a prized cooked vegetable in Southeast Asian salads and curries, the leaves wrap and steam food (tamales, fish, rice) imparting a subtle aroma, and the inner stem/core is eaten in some cuisines. A home banana harvest becomes fresh fruit, frozen chunks for smoothies and baking, banana bread, dried chips, and - for cooking types - a genuine starchy staple, with almost every part of the plant finding a use.

Bananas are propagated by DIVISION - separating the pups (suckers) that grow from the rhizome, which are clones of the parent. Edible bananas are seedless, so pups are the whole game; one plant becomes a lifelong, self-renewing patch.
Propagating bananas is wonderfully simple and is done almost entirely by division, because edible bananas are seedless (their sterility is exactly what makes the fruit edible - wild bananas are full of hard seeds). Every banana plant constantly sends up pups (suckers) from its underground rhizome, and each pup is a clone of the parent. To propagate, wait until a pup is a decent size (the best are 'sword suckers' with narrow, spear-like leaves and their own developing roots), then dig down and cut it away from the rhizome with a spade, taking a chunk of corm and some roots, and plant it elsewhere. That's the whole method - it's how banana clumps expand, how you share plants, and how you replace a fruited stem with the next generation.
Because a banana clump renews itself endlessly through pups (each fruiting pseudostem dying and being replaced by a follower), a single plant becomes a self-perpetuating patch that produces for many years and gives you an ongoing supply of new plants to spread or share. You'll never buy a banana plant twice once you have one going. (Commercial growers also use tissue culture to mass-produce clean, disease-free plants, and it's how you'd get a variety not available as a local pup - but for the home grower, dividing pups is all you need.) Seed-grown bananas are only for wild/ornamental species and breeding - for fruit, it's pups all the way.

The banana's honest health story is dietary and pleasantly practical: as a good source of potassium, vitamin B6, fiber, and easily digested carbohydrate, it's a genuinely useful everyday food - the classic gentle food for an upset stomach, a quick energy snack for athletes and children, and a soft, bland, easy-to-digest choice during recovery from illness (bananas feature in the old 'BRAT' diet for that reason). The potassium supports normal heart, muscle, and nerve function, and the fiber (and, in greener fruit, resistant starch) is good for digestion and gut health. This is food-as-medicine in the everyday sense - nourishing, well-tolerated food that gently supports the body - rather than any remedy or cure.
There's little to caution about: bananas have no toxic parts, the whole plant is safe and useful, and - unlike grapefruit - they carry no drug-interaction concerns. The only real note is for people who need to limit potassium (as in some kidney conditions), for whom bananas' potassium is worth counting; and bananas are a moderate-to-high-sugar fruit when ripe, so, as with any sweet fruit, portion sensibly if you're managing blood sugar (a firmer, greener banana is gentler there). For essentially everyone else, the banana is simply excellent, convenient, nourishing food - the world's favorite fruit for good, if unglamorous, reasons.

The banana is among the oldest cultivated fruits on earth, domesticated in Southeast Asia and New Guinea perhaps 7,000 or more years ago from wild, seed-filled species - the crucial breakthrough being the selection of rare seedless, edible forms, which could then only be spread by humans moving the pups. From that origin, bananas traveled westward with traders and travelers across the Indian Ocean to India, the Middle East, and Africa over millennia, and later to the Americas, becoming a staple food and a source of energy across the entire tropical world - cooking bananas and plantains in particular are a primary carbohydrate for hundreds of millions of people.
The banana's modern history is dramatically tied to disease. The great export dessert banana of the early 20th century was the 'Gros Michel,' but Panama disease (a soil-borne Fusarium wilt) devastated it, and the industry survived only by switching to the resistant Cavendish - which is why nearly every supermarket banana today is a Cavendish, and why they're all genetic clones (a vulnerability, since a new strain of Panama disease now threatens the Cavendish too). This monoculture story is a cautionary tale about relying on a single clone.
