DEADLY POISON - never eat any part, and never let clippings reach an animal. All but the red flesh of the fruit carries taxine alkaloids that stop the heart, and there is NO antidote. Drying does not weaken it: trimmings tipped over a fence are the classic killer of horses and cattle, as with oleander. Overview
The dark evergreen hedge in front of half the houses in America, and one of the most poisonous plants people live beside - no antidote, a sweet red fruit at toddler height, and clippings that kill horses.
Yew (Taxus) is the dark evergreen behind an enormous number of American front doors: the clipped hedge, the low mound under the window, the pair of columns either side of the path. Most are Japanese yew (T. cuspidata), English yew (T. baccata), or the hybrid between them (T. x media, sold as 'Hicksii', 'Densiformis' and 'Taunton').
It is also one of the most poisonous plants in ordinary cultivation. Every part except the red flesh of the fruit contains taxine alkaloids, which act directly on the heart, and there is no antidote. In animals, death is frequently sudden, with no warning signs at all.
Two ordinary situations cause almost all the harm. The first is the fruit: a soft, sweet, bright red cup at toddler height with a hard seed in the bottom that is lethal if chewed. The second is clippings. Taxine does not break down as cut foliage dries, and wilted yew becomes more attractive to grazing animals rather than less, so hedge trimmings tipped over a fence are a recognised and recurring cause of horse and cattle deaths — the same mechanism that makes oleander prunings deadly, and far more common than anyone eating the plant on purpose.

Watch out for
Phytophthora Root & Crown Rot High
A soil-borne water mold (Phytophthora species) that rots feeder roots and, on many plants, the crown at the soil line whenever the ground stays saturated. Rotted roots cannot take up water, so the plant looks drought-stressed even in wet soil: the canopy thins, leaves go small and pale, growth stalls, and dieback works in from the tips over months or years. It is the commonest cause of death in plants that want moisture but cannot tolerate standing water, and it travels in surface water and on tools, boots and moved soil.
Watch for: Wilting, yellowing and stunting that does not improve with watering, a thinning canopy of small pale leaves, and dieback from the shoot tips. Dig and the feeder roots are dark, soft or brittle rather than white and firm, and on many plants the tissue at the base of the stem is discolored under the bark. Worst in low spots, and wherever a downspout, driveway or compacted path drains into the bed.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Plant on a mound, berm or raised bed in heavy soil, and never in a hollow that holds winter water. Redirect roof and hard-surface runoff away from the planting, water deeply but infrequently so the surface dries between waterings, do not pile mulch against stems, and do not overwater in cold weather when the plant is using little. Use resistant rootstocks or tolerant varieties where they exist for the crop, and never move soil from an infected area.
Treat: Very hard to reverse once established. Improve the drainage immediately, cut watering back, and mulch with coarse material rather than fine, which stays sodden. Remove severely affected plants and correct the site before replanting - and do not put another susceptible plant back into the same wet spot. Phosphonate (phosphite) treatments can suppress it in a valuable specimen, but drainage and siting do far more.
The single most common cause of death in established yew, which tolerates almost everything except wet feet. Branches brown from the inside of the plant outward, and there is no cure once a plant is affected - remove it, fix the drainage, and do not replace it with another susceptible plant in the same wet spot.
Taxine Poisoning by Ingestion (deadly) High
Every part of a yew except the red flesh of the aril contains taxine alkaloids, which act directly on cardiac conduction. There is no antidote, and the margin is small - a handful of needles has killed adults. Toxicity is unchanged by drying, wilting or storage, so old clippings are as dangerous as fresh growth in any month of the year.
Watch for: Any ingestion of needles, twigs, bark or seed by a person or an animal. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain and a slow or irregular pulse - but with yew, collapse is often the first sign, so absence of symptoms means nothing.
Prevent: Never eat or taste any part. Teach children that nothing from this plant goes in a mouth, red fruit included. Wear gloves to trim, keep clippings out of compost, fires and animal reach, and do not plant yew where livestock graze or small children play unsupervised.
Treat: Suspected ingestion is an EMERGENCY - call poison control or emergency services immediately and do not wait for symptoms. There is no specific antidote; treatment is urgent supportive care for heart-rhythm effects. Say that it was yew, and take a piece of the plant if you can.
Livestock Poisoning from Clippings High
The commonest way yew kills. Taxine does not degrade as cut foliage dries, and wilted yew becomes more palatable to stock rather than less, so hedge trimmings tipped over a fence or dumped in a lane are eaten readily. Horses are exceptionally sensitive - well under a pound of foliage can be fatal - and cattle, sheep, goats and alpacas are all at risk. Death is frequently sudden, with animals found dead and yew still in the mouth.
Watch for: Garden waste dumped near paddocks, pasture or bridle paths; yew growing on a boundary within reach across a fence; dried yew foliage in hay or bedding; sudden unexplained death or collapse in animals with access to a hedge.
Prevent: Bag every clipping for municipal green waste the same day it is cut - never compost, never burn, never tip it over a wall or fence. Fence stock far enough from any boundary yew that nothing can reach across, and check hedges after storms for windfall branches inside a paddock.
Treat: A veterinary emergency with no antidote and a poor prognosis once signs appear - call a veterinarian immediately and name the plant. Remove all remaining animals from the source at once. Prevention is the only reliable protection.
Red Aril and Seed (child hazard) High
In autumn female yews carry soft, sweet, bright red open-ended cups at exactly toddler height. The red flesh itself contains no taxine, which is what makes the fruit dangerous - it tastes pleasant and invites more - while the hard seed sitting in the bottom of each cup is intensely poisonous if it is chewed. A seed swallowed whole and intact often passes through, but that is not something a parent can know or rely on.
Watch for: Red cups within reach of small children, fruit dropped onto paths, lawns and play surfaces, and any child reported to have eaten a red berry from a hedge.
Prevent: Clear fallen fruit from play areas in autumn, and consider removing fruiting branches at child height. Teach the rule as covering the whole plant, red part included - a nuance about the flesh being harmless is not a rule a child can apply.
Treat: Call poison control immediately for any suspected ingestion, even if only the red flesh is thought to have been eaten - you cannot tell whether a seed was chewed. Do not wait for symptoms.
Deer Browsing (and why it proves nothing) Medium
Yew is one of the most heavily browsed evergreens in deer country, stripped to bare wood at browse height through winter when little else is green - and deer are largely unaffected by it. This matters twice: it is a real horticultural nuisance, and it is the observation that most often convinces people the plant must be safe. It is not evidence about people, dogs, horses or cattle.
Watch for: A clean browse line at deer height, hedges eaten hollow from the outside in over winter, and heavy damage in hard weather.
Prevent: Netting or fencing through the winter months, or repellents reapplied after rain; a hedge cannot be protected by planting choice, since yew is a preferred food rather than a deterrent.
Treat: Yew regrows from old wood, so browsed hedges usually recover if protected for a season or two. Never take deer tolerance as a guide to safety for any other animal or for people.

The hybrid of English and Japanese yew and by far the most planted yew in North America - the upright 'Hicksii' used as a screen, the low spreading 'Densiformis' and 'Taunton' used under windows. Hardy, shade-tolerant and endlessly clippable, and every selection carries the same taxine alkaloids in needles, twigs, bark and seed. Clippings stay fully toxic dried.
Canada yew is a low sprawling shrub; Pacific yew a slender understory tree with thin flaking purplish bark. Both carry flat needles and red arils.
North America has its own yews: Canada yew, a low sprawling shrub of cool northeastern woods, and Pacific yew, a slow understory tree of the Northwest whose bark yielded the original paclitaxel. Neither is a garden hedge, both are met on a walk rather than in a yard, and both are exactly as poisonous as the planted species. Listed here so a native yew is never assumed to be the safe one.

The classic European hedging and topiary yew, and the churchyard tree that lives for centuries; the Irish yew 'Fastigiata' is its narrow columnar form. Less cold-hardy than the Japanese species, and the source of the needle extract from which paclitaxel is now semi-synthesised. Equally poisonous in every part but the aril flesh.

The catalog does not offer yew for planting. What matters instead is recognising it - flat soft two-ranked needles with two pale bands beneath, no resin smell, and a red open-ended cup with a seed in it rather than a cone.
The catalog does not offer yew as something to plant, so the useful skill here is recognising the one you already have, and telling it apart from the other evergreens used in the same places.
Needles. Flat, half an inch to an inch and a half long, soft-tipped rather than prickly, dark glossy green above with two pale matte bands beneath, set spirally on the twig but twisted into two flat ranks so a shoot looks feathered. Crush one: yew has no resin or gin smell whatsoever. The bark is thin, reddish-brown and flakes in plates, and old trunks are often fluted.
The fruit is the decisive test. A yew never carries a cone. From late summer a female plant carries a soft, bright red, open-ended cup about the size of a pea, with a single hard dark seed visible at the bottom of it. Nothing else in a foundation planting looks like that.
Against the plants people actually mix it up with:
Juniper and eastern red cedar — prickly awl needles or flat scale foliage, closed blue-grey berry-like cones, and a strong gin or resin smell when crushed. Arborvitae — flat aromatic sprays of scales and small dry woody cones. Hemlock (Tsuga) — the closest match, with flat two-ranked needles banded pale beneath, but the needles sit on tiny stalks, are finely toothed, and the tree carries small woody cones. Boxwood — paired oval leaves, not needles at all.
Two other yews are worth knowing by name. Canada yew (T. canadensis) is a native sprawling shrub of northeastern woods and Pacific yew (T. brevifolia) a native tree of the Northwest. Both are just as poisonous as the garden hedges. In the hot South, the Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus) is sold as a substitute where true yew fails; it is a different genus, but it is not a plant to eat either.
Care
How to live safely with an existing yew hedge: gloves and bagged clippings, nothing over the fence, nothing burned, red fruit cleared where small children play, and stock fenced well clear.
Most people meet yew by inheriting it, and a mature hedge is worth keeping — yew is one of the few conifers that regrows from old bare wood, so it can be cut hard and renewed rather than replaced. Living with it safely is four habits.
Trim in gloves, bag the clippings. Wear gloves and eye protection, sweep up thoroughly, and take the trimmings to municipal green waste the same day. Do not compost them, do not burn them, and never tip them over a fence, into a lane, onto a brush pile or anywhere near grazed ground. Dried yew is exactly as poisonous as fresh and more tempting to an animal.
Keep it away from grazing animals entirely. A few mouthfuls kill a horse, and cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas and deerlike livestock are all susceptible. If yew grows on a boundary, fence stock far enough back that nothing can reach across, and check that no one uses the far side of your hedge as a place to dump garden waste.
Clear the red fruit where small children play. Sweep the drops off paths and lawns in autumn, and teach children the plain rule — nothing from this plant goes in a mouth, ever, red part included.
Give it drainage. The one thing that reliably kills a yew is wet ground; it will take deep shade, hard clipping and city air, but not soggy soil.
Troubleshooting
Any suspected ingestion is an emergency - call poison control or a vet at once and do not wait for symptoms, because with yew there often are none until the heart is already affected.
Someone has eaten part of a yew — needles, seed, or a red fruit. This is a medical emergency. Call poison control or emergency services immediately and do not wait for symptoms, because with taxine there is often very little warning before the heart is affected. There is no antidote; treatment is urgent supportive hospital care. Take a piece of the plant with you if you can.
A dog, cat, horse or livestock animal has eaten yew or clippings. Contact a veterinarian immediately, and say it was yew — it changes what they prepare for. Do not wait to see whether the animal seems unwell. In horses and cattle, collapse is frequently the first sign there is.
“My toddler ate the red part.” Still call. The red flesh alone is not the poisonous part, but you cannot know whether a seed was chewed or swallowed, and that is the part that matters.
“The birds eat the berries, so how bad can it be?” Birds swallow the seed whole and pass it intact; nothing is released. It tells you nothing about a chewed seed. Deer browse yew heavily and are largely unaffected too — also not evidence of anything.
Branches turning brown from the inside, or a whole plant yellowing and dying. Almost always root rot from ground that stays wet, especially where a downspout or a driveway drains into the bed. Improve drainage; a yew standing in winter water will not recover.
Seedlings coming up under the hedge and in the beds. Bird-sown. Pull them in gloves while they are small.
Traditional & historical uses
The source of paclitaxel, one of the most important cancer drugs ever found - and a plant with no safe home preparation of any kind, because the compounds in the needles are a different, cardiotoxic set.
This section records how people have traditionally used this plant, and what is known about the risks. It is history and general information — not medical advice, and not a recommendation to treat anything. Plants are not dosed like medicines, some interact with prescriptions, and some are harmful in ways that are not obvious. Talk to a clinician before using any plant medicinally.
Yew has a genuinely extraordinary place in medicine. In the 1960s a US National Cancer Institute screening programme found powerful anti-tumour activity in the bark of the Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia), and the compound isolated from it — paclitaxel — became one of the most widely used chemotherapy drugs in the world, for ovarian, breast and lung cancers among others. Early production stripped the bark and killed the tree, which put real pressure on wild Pacific yew; the drug is now made semi-synthetically from a precursor extracted from the clipped needles of European yew, which simply regrow. The related drug docetaxel came from the same chemistry.
None of that makes yew a home remedy, and the reason is worth stating precisely. Paclitaxel is a purified molecule given by intravenous infusion under hospital supervision, at doses calculated for the person receiving it. The compounds you would actually extract by steeping yew needles are the taxine alkaloids — a different group, with no therapeutic use at all, which act on the heart and kill. Historical folk uses of yew, mostly as an abortifacient, are recorded chiefly through the deaths of the women who tried them.
There is no safe home preparation of yew — no tea, no tincture, no extract, no dose. The plant earned its place in medicine by being taken apart in a laboratory and rebuilt into something measurable. Nothing made in a kitchen is that.
History
Churchyard trees older than the churches beside them, the wood of the English longbow, and a poison recorded by Caesar - yew has been known as both sacred and lethal for millennia.
Few plants carry as much history. Yews stand in British and European churchyards that are demonstrably older than the churches beside them, some of them well over a thousand years old and a few plausibly far older, having been sacred sites before they were Christian ones. The tree regenerates in a way that blurs its own age — branches root where they touch the ground, and hollow ancient trunks keep growing.
The wood did something else. Dense, springy and strong in both compression and tension, yew was the timber of the English longbow, and demand for bowstaves stripped much of the European supply by the sixteenth century.
Its poison is recorded just as early. Julius Caesar describes the Eburonian chieftain Catuvolcus taking his own life with yew rather than surrender, and Roman and medieval writers treat the tree's lethality as common knowledge. That long reputation is worth carrying forward, because the modern version of the danger is far more mundane than a battlefield: a barrow of hedge trimmings emptied over a fence, and a pony on the other side of it.
Growing across climates
A cool-climate evergreen at its best in zones 4-7, tolerant of deep shade and hard clipping but not of wet soil or Southern heat, where it thins out and dies.
Zones 4-5: Japanese yew (T. cuspidata) and the hybrid T. x media are the hardy ones and are the reason yew dominates Midwestern and Northeastern foundation plantings. English yew is not reliably hardy here.
Zones 6-7: the whole genus does well, including English yew and the columnar Irish yew.
Zone 8 and warmer: yew struggles badly. Hot humid nights and warm wet soil bring on root rot, and plantings thin from the inside and fail. This is why the South uses Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus) and podocarpus instead — different genera, and neither is a plant to eat.
Everywhere it grows, the limiting factor is drainage, not cold. Yew tolerates deep shade, city air, salt-free coastal wind and repeated hard clipping better than almost any other evergreen, and tolerates standing water worse than almost any. Winter sun on frozen ground can also scorch exposed hedges bronze; they usually recover.
