The main practical considerations are its very large eventual size, fast somewhat brittle wood, and the sticky flower nectar and aphid honeydew that can drip onto cars parked beneath it.

Overview

One of the tallest and fastest-growing native hardwoods of the eastern forest - a straight-trunked giant with uniquely shaped leaves, tulip-like spring flowers high in the canopy, clear-yellow fall color, and some of the best nectar of any American tree.

Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) - also called tulip tree or yellow poplar - is one of the tallest and most magnificent hardwoods of the eastern forest, routinely reaching 70-90 feet and sometimes topping 120 feet or more on a single straight, columnar trunk. Despite its common names it's neither a true poplar nor a tulip; it's a member of the ancient magnolia family, and its uniquely shaped, four-lobed, square-tipped leaves and cup-shaped flowers give it away.

Those flowers are the tree's namesake glory: in late spring it opens greenish-yellow, orange-blotched blooms shaped like small tulips, held high in the canopy where they're easy to miss until the petals rain down. They're among the finest nectar sources of any American tree, yielding a distinctive dark 'tulip poplar honey.' Add fast growth, clean bright-yellow fall color, valuable straight timber, and a lifespan of 200-plus years, and tulip poplar is one of the great native shade and specimen trees for a large space - as long as you can give it the room and deep soil it demands.

One of the largest soft scales in North America, this insect attaches to twigs and branches of tulip poplar (and magnolia), sucking sap and excreting heavy honeydew; large infestations can weaken branches, cause dieback on young trees, and produce a mess of sooty mold.

Watch for: Clusters of large, rounded, brownish-to-pinkish scale bumps on twigs and small branches, abundant sticky honeydew, black sooty mold, and heavy attendance by wasps and ants feeding on the honeydew.

Prevent: Keep trees vigorous; encourage natural predators and parasites, which usually keep scale in check; monitor young trees, which are more vulnerable.

Treat: Apply horticultural oil in the dormant season or when crawlers are active to smother scale; prune out heavily infested twigs on small trees. Large established trees often tolerate infestations that natural enemies eventually control.

History

Troubleshooting
