Showy Milkweed
Like every milkweed, showy milkweed carries cardiac glycosides and is toxic if eaten - it is not a food plant, and it is toxic to horses, cattle, sheep and pets in quantity. The milky sap irritates skin and is a serious eye irritant: wear gloves when you cut it and keep your hands away from your eyes until you have washed. Western tribes cooked its young shoots and buds, but that is history recorded here, not a foraging instruction - grow it for the monarchs instead.
Overview
The monarch milkweed of the West. Velvety gray-green leaves and starry rose-pink flower domes across the Rockies, Great Basin, Plains and Pacific states - the regions the eastern milkweeds cannot serve. Tough, drought-proof and fragrant, but a rhizome traveler that wants room rather than a tidy border.
Showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) is the milkweed for everything west of the Mississippi. Common milkweed, swamp milkweed and butterfly weed are eastern and midwestern plants; showy milkweed is the one that actually grows across the Great Plains, the Rockies, the Great Basin and the Pacific states, and it is the principal host plant of the western monarch population — the monarchs that breed inland through summer and overwinter in groves along the California coast. That population has fallen by well over 95 percent since the 1980s, and rebuilding milkweed on the western breeding range is the single most useful thing a garden there can do.
It earns the name. The leaves are broad, thick and covered in soft gray-white felt, and the flower clusters are the most striking in the genus — domed heads of starry rose-pink flowers with long, sharply pointed horns, carried on 3- to 5-foot stems and scented strongly enough to find with your eyes shut. Bumble bees, solitary bees, swallowtails, wasps and monarchs work them together through early summer.
The catch is the same one common milkweed has: showy milkweed travels on deep rhizomes and will surface several feet from where you planted it. That is a feature in a meadow, a roadside strip or a fence line, and a nuisance in a small tidy border. Every part is toxic, so this is a plant for wildlife, not for the kitchen.

Root Rot Medium
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.
The usual killer of a garden showy milkweed. Summer irrigation on clay, or a low spot that holds winter runoff, will rot the taproot. Grow it lean, unwatered after year one, and raised or on a slope where the soil is heavy. In genuinely wet ground, grow swamp milkweed instead.
Oleander Aphid Low
Bright yellow, black-legged aphids that cluster densely on milkweed stems, buds and new growth. They are conspicuous and very common but rarely fatal to an established plant - and they cannot be sprayed, because any insecticide that kills them also kills the monarch eggs and caterpillars the plant is there to support.
Watch for: Dense colonies of vivid yellow aphids packed along the stems and over the flower buds, sticky honeydew, sooty mold, and ants working the plant.
Prevent: Encourage lady beetles and lacewings and let them do the work; a strong plant carries a heavy colony without real harm. Never use insecticide on a monarch host plant. Soft, over-watered, over-fed growth carries far more of them, so growing the plant hard reduces the problem.
Treat: Blast them off with a jet of water, or wipe them off by hand - checking first for monarch eggs and small caterpillars on the same stems. Otherwise simply tolerate them, since predators usually catch up. Do NOT spray, including with insecticidal soap or neem, which kill caterpillars too.
Very common on showy milkweed in the dry West, worst on soft irrigated growth. A plant grown hard and unwatered carries fewer of them.
Milkweed Tussock Moth Low
A native moth whose fuzzy orange-black-and-white caterpillars feed in groups on milkweed leaves, sometimes stripping older foliage late in the season - a natural part of the milkweed community, not a problem to control.
Watch for: Clusters of hairy orange, black, and white caterpillars skeletonizing leaves, usually on older plants in late summer.
Prevent: None needed - they're native and share the plant with monarchs.
Treat: None warranted; if a young plant is being overwhelmed you can move a cluster to another milkweed, but generally leave them be.
On a running patch there is always enough leaf to go round, so late-season stripping of a few stems does not matter.

Grow
Full sun, lean well-drained soil, and a permanent place with room to run. Start it from fall-sown or cold-stratified seed, water it only the first season, never fertilize, and never let a spray of any kind near it.
Showy milkweed asks for very little and objects to almost everything gardeners like to do. Give it full sun and ordinary-to-poor soil that drains — sand, gravel, decomposed granite, roadside fill are all fine, and heavy wet clay is the one site that kills it. It is at home in the dry interior West, and once its root system is down it lives on natural rainfall in most of its range.
Start it from seed. The seed needs a cold, damp period before it will germinate, so the simplest route is to sow it outdoors in fall and let winter handle it; otherwise chill the seed damp in the refrigerator for about 30 days and sow indoors in deep tubes six to eight weeks before your last frost. Plant out small — a young plug with an intact taproot establishes far better than a big nursery pot — and plant it where it will stay, because it does not transplant once mature.
Three rules matter more than the rest. Do not fertilize; rich soil makes floppy stems and more running. Do not irrigate an established plant in heavy ground — summer water on clay is the usual cause of death. And never spray anything on or near it. That includes systemic neonicotinoids, which stay in the foliage for a season or more; when you buy plants, ask whether the nursery treats its stock, and buy from a native-plant grower who can give you a straight answer.
Care
Almost none. Pull the stray rhizome shoots each spring, tolerate the yellow aphids, leave the caterpillars alone, cut the dead stalks in late winter - and do not spray, water or feed an established plant.
Once it is established, showy milkweed is a plant you visit rather than tend. It needs no feeding, no watering in most of its range, and no staking. The one recurring job is containment: each spring, pull the rhizome shoots that have surfaced outside the area you want it in. They come up soft and pull easily in April; left until August they are woody and rooted in.
Two things will alarm you and neither needs action. Bright yellow oleander aphids coat the stems and buds most summers — they look catastrophic and rarely hurt an established plant. Knock them off with a jet of water, or leave them for the lady beetles and syrphid larvae that will arrive within a week. Do not spray, ever: an insecticide that kills aphids kills monarch eggs and caterpillars on the same leaves. Second, caterpillars will strip the leaves. That is the plant doing its job. If a single small plant is being eaten bare, the answer is more milkweed, not fewer caterpillars.
Wear gloves whenever you cut it — the milky sap is a skin irritant and a genuinely serious eye irritant. In fall, leave the seed pods if you want the patch to expand and clip them green if you do not. Leave the dead stalks standing over winter for the insects sheltering in them, and cut them to the ground in late winter before the new shoots come.
Harvest
There is nothing to eat here - the plant is toxic and grown for monarchs. The only thing worth taking is seed, collected as the pods first split, and it is the best thing you can give a neighbour.
Showy milkweed is not a crop. Its yield is monarch caterpillars and pollinators, and the flowers and leaves are worth incomparably more standing than cut. Every part contains cardiac glycosides and it is toxic to people, pets and livestock. Some western tribes cooked the young shoots, buds and immature pods as a spring vegetable, and that history is real — but it is recorded here as history, not as a foraging instruction, and the plant is worth far more to a monarch than to your dinner.
The one genuine harvest is seed, and it is worth doing. Watch the big warty pods from late summer; when a pod turns gray-brown and the seam just begins to open, pick it. A day later the wind has taken everything. Split the pod over a paper bag, strip the seed off the silk with your fingers (holding the tuft and pulling downward gets most of it in one motion), and store the clean seed cool and dry in an envelope. It stays viable for several years, it needs cold-stratification before it will grow, and a single pod holds enough to start a patch. Passing that envelope along is, in practical terms, monarch conservation.
Storage
Nothing to store as food. Store the seed dry and cool in a paper envelope, and remember that it needs 30 days of damp cold before it will germinate. The plant itself stores underground and comes back on its own.
There is no food to store. What you store is seed. Collect pods as they begin to split, strip the seed from the silky floss, and let it dry a few days on a plate before you put it away. A paper envelope in a cool, dry, dark place is all it needs; sealed plastic and any residual moisture will ruin it. Labelled and stored that way, showy milkweed seed stays reliably viable for three or four years and often longer.
Remember the germination requirement when you go to use it: the seed needs about 30 days damp and cold before it will grow. Either sow it outdoors in fall and let the winter do it, or mix it with barely-damp sand or a wrung-out paper towel in a bag in the refrigerator for a month before sowing.
The plant stores itself. A deep taproot and a spreading network of rhizomes carry it through hard winters and dry summers, and it comes back reliably for a decade or more from a crown that gets a little larger every year.
Propagation & seed saving
Seed is the standard route - fall-sown outdoors or cold-stratified for 30 days and started in deep pots. Rhizome divisions work in early spring but establish slowly. Left alone, a patch propagates itself.
Seed is how showy milkweed is grown, and it is easy once you respect the cold requirement. The reliable method is to sow outdoors in fall, barely covered, in the place you want it, and let winter cold-stratify the seed naturally; germination follows in spring. For a controlled start, chill the seed damp in the refrigerator for about 30 days, then sow into deep pots or tree tubes six to eight weeks before your last frost — the taproot goes down fast and hates being coiled in a shallow cell. Seedlings usually flower in their second or third year.
Rhizome division works too, and is the way to move a plant you already have. In early spring, before growth starts, dig a length of rhizome with at least one bud and some root and replant it immediately at the same depth in loose soil. Keep it watered its first season. It is slower and less certain than seed, because milkweed resents disturbance.
In practice the plant does most of this itself. It runs sideways every year and self-sows on the wind, so an established patch expands without help — which is exactly why the siting decision at the beginning matters more than any propagation technique.
Nutrition
Not a food plant - it is toxic. Its value is ecological: the primary host plant of the western monarch population, plus one of the heaviest nectar producers in the western native flora.
Showy milkweed is not eaten, and this section is about what it feeds rather than what it feeds you. It contains cardiac glycosides throughout and is toxic to people, pets and grazing animals.
Ecologically it is a heavyweight. It is the principal larval host of the western monarch across the Great Basin, the Rockies, the interior Northwest and the Central Valley — monarchs lay on it, the caterpillars eat nothing else, and they sequester its toxins to make themselves unpalatable to birds for life. Beyond monarchs, its flowers are among the most productive nectar sources in the western native flora, fuelling bumble bees, dozens of native solitary bee species, tarantula hawks and other large wasps, swallowtails, fritillaries and hummingbirds during the early-summer window when little else in a dry western landscape is in bloom.
The western monarch population that depends on it is in serious trouble — down by more than 95 percent from its 1980s numbers, with the overwintering count on the California coast swinging wildly from year to year. Milkweed on the inland breeding range is the limiting resource. Planting a patch of the right regional species is a direct, measurable contribution.

The genus name says it: Asclepias honors Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, a nod to how thoroughly the milkweeds were used as remedies. Across the West, many tribes — among them Great Basin, Plateau and California peoples — used showy milkweed medicinally. The sticky white latex was applied directly to warts, ringworm and sores and used as a wash for skin complaints, and preparations of the root were taken for a range of internal complaints, in the same tradition that gave butterfly weed the name pleurisy root.
The chemistry behind those uses is the chemistry that makes the plant dangerous. Showy milkweed contains cardiac glycosides — heart-active compounds — along with an irritant latex, and the dose that does anything is uncomfortably close to the dose that harms. Traditional use rested on specific knowledge, specific preparations and generations of transmitted caution, none of which survives in a summary like this one.
Treat this as history. There is no safe home preparation of showy milkweed, nothing here should be eaten or applied, and this is educational information rather than medical advice. The plant's real work now is holding up the western monarch population.
History
One of the great fiber plants of the American West - milkweed cordage runs through Indigenous material culture from the Great Basin to California - and now the emblem of western monarch recovery.
Long before it was a garden plant, showy milkweed was a fiber plant, and one of the important ones. Across the Great Basin, the Columbia Plateau and California, dried stems were retted and the long bast fibers stripped and rolled against the thigh into cordage — string, fishing line, nets, snares, bowstrings and the foundation of woven bags. It was strong, it was abundant along creeks and roadsides, and it appears throughout the material culture of the region. The young shoots and flower buds were also cooked as a spring vegetable, and the latex chewed as gum, in societies that knew exactly how to handle a toxic plant.
In the twentieth century its silky seed floss found an industrial moment: during the Second World War, milkweed floss was collected across North America to fill life jackets after the Asian kapok supply was cut off. It is still used as a hypoallergenic pillow and insulation fill.
Its modern history is the monarch's. As the western monarch overwintering count collapsed from millions in the 1980s to a few thousand in the worst recent winters, showy milkweed became the plant that western conservation groups, seed programs and highway departments push hardest — the right regional milkweed to put back on the breeding range, and now among the most-sown natives in the West.
Troubleshooting
Coming up everywhere is normal for this species - pull the outliers each spring. Yellow aphids need no action, stripped leaves are success, and a plant that died was almost certainly in wet ground or moved after it matured.
It is coming up all over the yard. That is showy milkweed. It runs on deep rhizomes, and the fix is to pull the outlying shoots every spring while they are soft, install a deep barrier, or accept a patch. If you need a milkweed that stays in one place, butterfly weed clumps politely and does the same monarch job.
Bright yellow insects covering the stems. Oleander aphids. Hose them off or leave them; do not spray, because the same spray kills monarch eggs and caterpillars.
Leaves eaten down to the ribs. Monarch or tussock moth caterpillars. This is exactly what the plant is for. Plant more so the grazing spreads out.
Nothing germinated. The seed was not cold-stratified. Sow in fall outdoors, or chill it damp for 30 days first.
It died over winter or turned yellow and collapsed. Almost always wet feet — heavy clay, a low spot, or summer irrigation on an established plant. Move it to a raised, sharply drained position.
It died after I moved it. Mature plants do not transplant. Start from seed or a young plug in the final spot.
Nothing is coming up in spring. It is dormant, and it emerges late. Mark the spot in fall so you do not dig into it.

Growing across climates
Hardy zones 3-9 across the interior West, the Plains and the Pacific states, the regions the eastern milkweeds do not reach. One regional exception: do not plant milkweed within about five miles of the California coastal overwintering groves.
Showy milkweed covers the ground the catalog's other milkweeds cannot. It is hardy roughly zones 3-9 and native from the Pacific states through the Great Basin and Rockies to the Great Plains and the upper Midwest. Northern Plains and mountain West (zones 3-5): fully cold-hardy, needs the winter cold to germinate, and thrives on lean dry ground. Great Basin, Colorado Plateau and interior Northwest (zones 5-7): its heartland — drought-proof, unbothered by heat and wind, and the key western monarch breeding resource. California and the Southwest (zones 7-9): excellent in the Central Valley, the foothills and the interior, where it is often found along ditches and creek margins and appreciates a little more moisture than in the north.
Two regional cautions. First, do not plant any milkweed within about five miles of the California coastal overwintering groves — the eucalyptus, cypress and pine stands where western monarchs cluster from October to February. Milkweed was historically scarce there, and planting it near the groves encourages winter breeding instead of overwintering. Check the Xerces Society's overwintering-site guidance if you garden on the central or southern California coast. Second, in the humid East showy milkweed is out of range; plant common, swamp or butterfly milkweed instead. And everywhere in the West, choose this over the nursery-sold tropical milkweed, which does not die back and harms the monarchs it attracts.
