Plant with care. Creeps by rooting runners and seeds heavily, so it moves into lawns and beds on its own. That is the point in a bee lawn or wild patch; in a tidy border, edge it and shear the spikes before seed drops. Not listed as a noxious weed anywhere in the US.

Edible and gentle: young leaves and flower spikes are eaten raw or brewed as tea, with no reported toxicity. Identify it before eating anything out of a lawn, and never harvest from ground treated with herbicide or lawn chemicals. Medicinal-strength preparations are another matter: safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established, mint-family allergy is possible, and preclinical blood-sugar and thyroid effects mean you should ask a clinician if you take medication for either.

Overview

The little purple-hooded mint most people already own and mow. Self-heal is a creeping, mow-tolerant perennial that doubles as a top native-bee plant, a mild edible green, and the classic wound herb of both European and Chinese medicine.

Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) is probably already growing in your lawn. It is a low, creeping mint-family perennial that spreads by rooting runners, throws up a stubby violet flower spike from early summer into fall, and — unusually — keeps flowering even when it is mowed. Most people meet it as a lawn weed. It is worth knowing as three other things: one of the best native-bee plants you can have in turf, a mild edible green, and the herb that Europe called woundwort and China calls xia ku cao.

The taxonomy matters here more than usual. The form most often found in North American lawns, ssp. vulgaris, is a Eurasian introduction — but ssp. lanceolata is genuinely native across nearly the whole continent, and it is the one sold as native seed and plugs for pollinator lawns. University of Minnesota bee-lawn research found that 95 percent of the flower visitors to self-heal were native bees, a remarkable figure for a plant that costs you nothing but the decision to stop weeding it.

Grown deliberately it gives you a tough, mow-tolerant groundcover for zones 3–9 that takes sun or part shade, wants ordinary moist soil, and needs no feeding. The honest caveat is that it spreads — by runner and by seed — so put it where spreading is welcome.

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

The one pest that does visible damage here. A ground-hugging mat in moist, part-shaded soil is ideal slug habitat, and newly set plugs or seedlings can be sheared off overnight. Established mats shrug the grazing off entirely - it is only the first few weeks after planting that matter. Hand-pick after dark, and set out decent-sized plugs rather than direct-sowing into cold wet ground.

Not a pest but the defining habit to manage. This plant spreads by underground rhizome, by prolific self-sowing, or by both, so a colony widens steadily every season and shoots appear well beyond where you planted it. In a meadow, wild area or lawn-alternative planting that is precisely the point; in a tidy border it will crowd out less vigorous neighbors and escape into the lawn and beds around it.

Watch for: New shoots emerging progressively farther from the original clump, the patch widening year to year, and self-sown seedlings coming up around and beyond the parent plant.

Prevent: Decide first whether the spread is welcome and site accordingly - a spreader in the right place needs no management at all. Where it must be contained, install a buried root barrier or sink it in a large container, keep a mowed or hard edge against it, deadhead before the seed ripens, and grow it in leaner, drier soil, which slows most spreaders down. Where a clumping cultivar exists, it is far less work than fighting the running form.

Treat: Pull runners and seedlings while they are small and easy, dig and divide the colony back on a regular cycle, and deadhead to cut off the seeding half of the problem. Persistent containment is what keeps a vigorous plant productive without letting it take over.

Self-heal spreads two ways at once: rooting runners that creep outward all season, and heavy self-seeding from spikes left to brown. In a bee lawn or wild patch that is exactly what you want; in a bed it runs into the lawn and through low neighbors within a couple of seasons. Shear spikes before the seed ripens, keep a mowed or hard edge, and pull rooted runners while small. Not listed as a noxious weed anywhere in the US.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Occasional colonies on the soft tips and down in the flower spikes. Because the flowering tops are exactly what you harvest, shear affected spikes and rinse the rest well rather than spraying. The patch's own flowers pull in the hoverflies and lady beetles that clear them anyway.

Deer (browse resistance) Low WildlifeMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.

Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.

Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.

Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.

Deer and rabbits browse the flowering spikes where pressure is high, which costs the pollinators more than it costs the plant - self-heal regrows from its creeping stems regardless. Rarely worth fencing, since it is not a preferred browse.

Root Rot Low DiseaseJan, Feb, Mar, Nov, Dec

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

Barely an issue for the wild species, which is happy in ordinary moist ground. It matters for the ornamental Prunella grandiflora selections in heavy soil that stays waterlogged over winter, and for pots left standing in a full saucer. Plant those where the ground drains and keep heavy winter mulch off the crown.

Powdery Mildew Low DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

A sprawling, mat-forming semi-evergreen perennial 6-12 inches tall that spreads by stolons and rhizomes to 18-36 inches wide, making a good weed-suppressing edging in moist, lightly shaded ground. A border plant rather than a lawn one, and worth deadheading, since it seeds about like its wild cousin.

Grow

Sun to part shade and ordinary moist soil, zones 3 to 9. Seed establishes well once it has had a cold-moist spell, and plugs or divisions give faster cover; for a bee lawn, overseed at about 1.2 oz per 1,000 square feet in late fall or late spring.

Self-heal is one of the least demanding perennials you can plant. It takes full sun to part shade, wants ordinary, evenly moist soil rather than sharp drainage, and is hardy from zone 3 to zone 9. The one soil it dislikes is deep dry sand. Set plants or plugs 6–18 inches apart and they will close the gaps themselves within a season, because every stem node that touches soil roots down.

Seed is where people struggle. It is small, wants to be barely covered, germinates unevenly over one to three weeks — sometimes far longer — and does much better after a cold-moist spell. The simplest route is to sow outdoors in late fall and let winter do the stratifying, or to give bought seed about 30 days damp in the refrigerator before sowing indoors 6–10 weeks ahead of your last frost. Give it that cold spell and it establishes perfectly well — Extension bee-lawn programs seed self-heal directly at a set rate, and it is creeping thyme, not self-heal, that they flag as tricky enough to want plugs. Plugs and divisions are still the quickest way to cover a small patch if you would rather skip the wait.

For a flowering lawn, overseed into existing turf at roughly 1.2 oz of self-heal seed per 1,000 square feet, either as a dormant seeding in early November to mid-December or in mid-May to early June. Mow the turf short and rake it hard first so the seed actually reaches soil, then keep it damp until it is up.

Care

Almost none. Water in a drought, mow high at 3 to 4 inches every two or three weeks if it is in turf, stop mowing while it is in flower, and shear or edge it if you want it to stay where you put it.

Established self-heal needs essentially nothing. Water it through a genuine drought — the leaves scorch and the patch browns off in hot dry sun — and skip fertilizer entirely, since rich ground only makes it lusher and faster to spread. Serious pests are rare.

If it lives in a lawn, the management is mowing height and timing. Set the mower to 3–4 inches, cut roughly every two to three weeks rather than weekly, and follow the one-third rule so you never remove more than a third of the growth at once. Self-heal adapts: over a season or two the plants learn to flower at a lower height. Stop mowing entirely while it is in full bloom so the bees get the flowers — that is the whole reason to have it there.

In a bed, the job is containment rather than care. Shear the spikes before the seed browns, keep a hard mowed edge, and pull rooted runners while they are small. Divide the mat every few years in late winter to renew it, and replant the divisions somewhere else rather than composting them — every piece takes.

Harvest

Cut the leafy flowering tops just as the spikes open, roughly June to September, and take young leaves any time before bloom. For the Chinese herb, leave some spikes standing and cut them once they turn brown in late summer.

Everything above ground is usable. For eating, take the young leaves before the plant flowers, when they are mildest; older leaves go flat and slightly bitter. For tea and herbal use, cut the leafy flowering tops — roughly the upper 4–6 inches with the spike attached — just as the first florets open and the color and aroma are at their peak. Cut above a leaf pair with scissors and the plant branches and comes again; a patch gives two or three cuttings between June and September.

There is a separate, later harvest worth knowing about. In Chinese medicine the drug xia ku cao is not the fresh green top but the dried fruit-spike, cut in late summer once flowering has finished and the spike has gone reddish-brown and papery. If you want that, leave some spikes unshorn and come back in August or September — which of course also means letting seed drop, so weigh it against how much spreading you are willing to accept.

Harvest in the morning after the dew has dried, and only from ground you know has had no herbicide or lawn chemical on it. That rules out most municipal turf and a good many neighborhood lawns.

Storage

It dries very well: tray-dry or bundle the flowering tops out of the sun, then jar them airtight in the dark and use within a year. Fresh leaves keep a few days in the refrigerator; there is nothing to cure or cellar.

Self-heal dries easily and keeps its color. Spread the cut tops one layer deep on a screen, or tie small loose bundles and hang them somewhere warm, dark and airy. They are done in a few days to a week, when the stems snap rather than bend. A dehydrator on its lowest setting works too. Strip the dried leaves and spikes into an airtight jar, label it with the year, and keep it out of the light; about a year is the sensible window before color and flavor fade.

Fresh leaves behave like any tender green — three to five days in the refrigerator in a bag with a damp towel. There is nothing here to cure, cellar, or can. Infused oils and salves are the traditional way to keep the herb for topical use, but those are medicinal preparations rather than a storage method, and the honest caveats about them belong in the Medicine section rather than here.

Propagation & seed saving

The easiest plant in the garden to multiply: lift rooted runners any time, divide the mat in late winter, root cuttings in water, or simply let it self-sow, which it does with enthusiasm.

You will never buy this plant twice. The stems root wherever a node touches soil, so the simplest propagation is to lift a rooted piece with a trowel and plant it elsewhere — it barely notices the move. Divide an established mat in late winter or early spring, cutting it into fist-sized pieces with roots on each. Softwood cuttings root in water or damp mix within a couple of weeks.

From seed, collect the brown spikes in late summer, dry them in a paper bag, and rub out the tiny nutlets. Sow them fresh outdoors in fall and let winter stratify them, or chill them damp for about a month before a spring sowing. Barely cover the seed and keep it moist. Germination is uneven — one to three weeks for most of it, stragglers well beyond — which is why native-plant nurseries sell plugs alongside the seed.

Left alone it does all of this by itself. One plant becomes a patch in two seasons through runners and volunteer seedlings, so the practical skill with self-heal is giving it away rather than making more of it.

Nutrition

A mild wild green rather than a staple: the young leaves eat like plain lettuce and carry some vitamin A and C plus the antioxidant rosmarinic acid, but you use them in handfuls, not helpings.

Self-heal is a minor edible, not a nutritional crop. The young leaves are mild — closer to plain lettuce than to anything peppery or aromatic — and are eaten raw or cooked in the quantities you would use any wild green. They contribute some vitamin A and vitamin C with small amounts of potassium and iron, but nobody eats enough of them for that to move the needle.

What the leaf does carry in real quantity is rosmarinic acid, the polyphenol that also makes rosemary, lemon balm, and oregano notable antioxidants, alongside ursolic and oleanolic acids and a group of polysaccharides. That chemistry is the reason self-heal has a research literature at all. It is a good argument for enjoying the plant and a poor one for treating it as a supplement — see the Medicine section for what the evidence does and does not support.

In the kitchen

Young leaves go into salads, soups, and stir-fries as a mild filler green; the small violet flowers are edible and pretty scattered on a plate; and the dried flowering tops make a mild, faintly grassy tea.

Nobody grows self-heal for flavor, and that is not really a criticism — a mild green is a useful thing to have. The young leaves are pleasant raw in a mixed salad and better still wilted into soups, stews, and stir-fries, where they behave like a tender spinach and take on whatever they are cooked with. After the plant flowers the leaves toughen and turn slightly bitter, so chop those finely or send them to the pot rather than the salad bowl.

The flowers are edible and worth using for looks: pull the small violet hooded florets off the spike and scatter them over a salad, a soft cheese, or a cake. The standard preparation, though, is tea — about two teaspoons of the dried leaf and flower per cup of just-boiled water, steeped ten minutes. The result is mild, faintly grassy and lightly astringent, takes honey or lemon well, and blends nicely with mint or lemon balm when you want more character.

Traditional & historical uses

The classic Western wound herb - poulticed on cuts and gargled for sore throats, which is where the names self-heal and woundwort come from - and the Chinese herb xia ku cao for red eyes and neck swellings. Modern work confirms rosmarinic acid and finds antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity in the lab, but there is almost no human evidence. Educational only, not medical advice.

Few plants carry a bigger promise in their own name. Self-heal, heal-all, allheal, woundwort, carpenter's herb — every one of them points at the same tradition, and it is among the most consistently recorded folk uses in the European herbal record.

Traditional Western use: the fresh leaves were crushed or chewed into a poultice and bound onto cuts, grazes, and bruises — the reason reapers and carpenters carried it, and the source of the names hook-heal and sicklewort. An infusion served as a gargle and mouthwash for sore throats, mouth ulcers, and inflamed gums, and was drunk as a mild astringent tea for diarrhea. The plant is genuinely astringent and mildly antimicrobial in the laboratory, so the wound and throat traditions are at least chemically plausible.

Traditional Chinese use: as xia ku cao, the dried brown fruit-spike has been a standard herb for a very long time and remains in the Chinese pharmacopoeia. It is classified as cooling and used to clear liver fire — in practice, for red, sore, painful eyes and headache, and for lumps and swellings in the neck such as scrofula and goiter. It is nearly always used within a formula rather than alone.

What modern evidence shows. The chemistry is real and well described: rosmarinic acid, ursolic and oleanolic acids, flavonoids, and a sulfated polysaccharide. In cell and animal studies, extracts show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral activity, including against herpes simplex virus in vitro. That work is genuinely interesting, and it is also where the evidence stops: there are essentially no controlled human trials behind the wound, throat, or eye uses. The one area with pooled clinical data is hyperthyroidism, where meta-analyses of small trials report that Prunella preparations added to conventional antithyroid drugs lowered thyroid hormone levels — but those trials are small, short, and methodologically weak, and none of this makes self-heal a treatment for anything.

Honest cautions. As food and as an occasional tea, self-heal is gentle and low-risk, one of the milder herbs in the cabinet, with no reported toxicity. Medicinal-strength use is a different question. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not established, so avoid it there. Mint-family allergy is possible. Given the thyroid findings and preclinical blood-sugar and blood-pressure effects, speak to a clinician first if you take thyroid medication, diabetes medication, blood thinners, or immunosuppressants. And a deep or dirty wound needs a doctor, not a poultice — the old use was for minor scrapes in a world without antiseptics. Educational information, not medical advice.

History

The name is a promise. European herbalists called it woundwort and carpenter's herb and carried it for tool cuts, and Prunella comes from a German name for a throat inflammation it was used on. In China the dried spike has been xia ku cao for two thousand years.

The botanical name is itself a clue to the reputation. Prunella is a softened form of Brunella, taken from die Bräune, an old German name for the quinsy or throat inflammation the herb was given for — a sixteenth-century remedy attached to a sixteenth-century complaint. The English names run the same direction: self-heal, heal-all, allheal, woundwort.

Two of the folk names are more specific, and more revealing. Carpenter's herb, hook-heal, and sicklewort all record the same practical fact: people who worked with edged tools cut themselves, and this was the plant they reached for in the field. Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century herbalists rated it about as highly as a wound herb could be rated, and the doctrine of signatures helped the case along, since the hooked upper lip of the flower was read as resembling both a billhook and a throat.

China's tradition is older and entirely separate. Xia ku cao — roughly, the summer-withering herb, for the way the spike browns while the season is still going — appears in the earliest surviving Chinese materia medica and is still an official herb today, used for liver-fire patterns and neck swellings. That two independent traditions, half a world apart, settled on the same small lawn plant is part of why it keeps turning up in modern laboratories.

Troubleshooting

Seed that never comes up needs cold-moist stratification, or plugs instead; a patch spreading into the lawn is normal behavior; no flowers usually means deep shade or mowing too short and too often; brown crisped leaves mean drought.

The seed never came up: the commonest complaint. Self-heal seed wants a cold-moist period and germinates slowly and unevenly even with one. Fall-sow outdoors, or chill the seed damp for 30 days first, barely cover it, and keep it moist. Skipping that cold spell is the usual reason a sowing fails; if one fails twice anyway, plugs sidestep the question entirely.

It is spreading into the lawn and beds: expected. It creeps by rooting runners and seeds freely. Shear the spikes before the seed browns, keep a hard edge, and pull rooted runners while they are small — or reconsider, because in turf the spreading is the feature.

Plenty of leaves, no flowers: deep shade, or mowing too short and too often. Give it at least half a day of sun, raise the mower to 3–4 inches, and cut every two to three weeks instead of weekly.

Leaves browning and crisping in summer: drought plus hot sun. This is a moist-soil plant; water it through a dry spell, or move it somewhere with afternoon shade. It rarely dies from this, but it stops flowering.

White powdery film on the leaves: powdery mildew in crowded, shaded, humid conditions. Cosmetic on a groundcover — shear the patch and it grows out clean, which beats spraying something you may eat.

Am I sure this is self-heal? Look for a square stem, opposite leaves on short stalks, and a blunt, thumb-sized terminal spike of overlapping bracts carrying two-lipped violet flowers with a hooded upper lip. Purple dead-nettle and henbit have leaves clasping the stem and bloom in early spring; ground ivy has scalloped round leaves and a strong smell when crushed. Self-heal has almost no scent at all.

Growing across climates

Hardy and adaptable from zone 3 to zone 9, and one of the few groundcovers equally at home in a cold Midwest lawn and a humid Southeastern one. Its real limits are deep sand, deep shade, and dry heat without irrigation.

Self-heal is about as climate-flexible as a perennial gets, which is why it turns up in lawns from Maine to Oregon. Zones 3–5: fully hardy, dying back to a tight low crown and coming through hard winters without protection, then flowering from June. Fall dormant seeding works especially well here, because winter does the stratifying for free.

Zones 6–8: its easiest range, in sun or part shade, blooming June into September. In the humid Southeast give it a little afternoon shade and it sails through the summer that rots Mediterranean herbs — this is a plant that likes the moisture rather than merely tolerating it.

Zone 9 and the dry West: it grows, but heat and drought set the limit rather than cold. In the arid West and Southwest it needs irrigation and afternoon shade or it browns off by midsummer; along the mild Pacific coast it thrives and self-sows freely enough to become a management question.

Two conditions defeat it anywhere: deep dry sand, which it will not hold in, and deep shade, where it makes leaves and no flowers. Everything else — clay, foot traffic, mowing, hard cold, humidity — it takes in stride.
