Rattlesnake master is grown as an architectural pollinator plant, not for food. Its name comes from a folk belief that the root cured rattlesnake bite - it does not, and it should never be relied on for snakebite or self-prescribed as medicine. The stiff leaf edges bear small spiny teeth that can scratch, so wear gloves when handling or cutting it. Otherwise it is a safe, non-toxic native with no food use.

Rattlesnake master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is one of the most distinctive plants of the tallgrass prairie. From a bold basal rosette of stiff, blue-green, yucca-like leaves - sword-shaped and edged with soft spines - it sends up branched stalks 2 to 5 feet tall, each tipped through summer with dozens of spherical, greenish-white, thistle-like button flower heads. Oddly, despite the yucca looks and thistle-like flowers, it belongs to the carrot family (Apiaceae).

Those button heads are a pollinator powerhouse: they draw an unusually wide range of bees, wasps, flies, beetles, and butterflies, making rattlesnake master one of the best generalist pollinator plants for a native garden. A deep taproot makes it drought-tolerant, long-lived, and unfussy, and its stiff architecture reads beautifully in a prairie planting, a modern border, or a dried arrangement. The dramatic name comes from an old and mistaken folk belief that its root cured rattlesnake bite - it does not, but the plant more than earns its place on looks and wildlife value alone.

Watch for: White dusty film starting on lower leaves and climbing, leaves yellowing and dropping beneath the blooms.

Prevent: Wide spacing, base (never overhead) watering, full sun and airflow; grow resistant series (Profusion, Zahara) where it recurs every year.

Give it sun and soil that drains and it thrives from the northern prairies through the warm, humid Southeast.
