Poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix) is the least familiar but arguably the most severe of North America's three common urushiol plants. Like poison ivy and poison oak, it belongs to the genus Toxicodendron and carries urushiol - the same oily allergen - in every part, causing an intensely itchy, blistering allergic rash that is often worse than poison ivy's. It's a shrub or small tree of wet ground: bogs, swamps, marsh edges, and wet woods across the eastern United States.

Two things make poison sumac worth knowing precisely. First, it looks nothing like poison ivy's 'leaves of three' - it has pinnately compound leaves of 7 to 13 leaflets on a often-red stalk, and it bears loose, drooping clusters of white or pale-green berries. Second, it shares a name with the completely different, edible red-berried sumacs (staghorn, smooth), which people harvest for a lemonade-like drink and spice. The distinction is life-comfort-critical: edible sumac has UPRIGHT RED fuzzy berries in dry, sunny sites; poison sumac has DROOPING WHITE berries in wet swamps. The hazard is to you: every part of poison sumac contains urushiol, causing an intensely itchy, blistering allergic rash that is often more severe than poison ivy's. The oil is active year-round (even on bare winter stems) and spreads readily from tools, clothing, and pet fur.

Watch for: Any skin contact with the plant; a red, itchy, blistering rash appearing 12-72 hours later, often in streaks, and sometimes markedly severe.

As with poison ivy, the only 'care' is safe removal, and poison sumac demands full respect because its rash can be especially severe. Never burn it - the smoke aerosolizes urushiol and can cause a dangerous rash in the lungs and airways. To remove it, wait for a cool day, cover every inch of skin (long sleeves and pants, waterproof gloves, closed shoes, eye protection), and either cut and dig out the roots (it resprouts from roots left behind) or apply a targeted herbicide to actively growing plants. Because it grows in wetlands, take special care: footing is poor, and herbicide use near water is often restricted, so read labels and local rules.
