Not a food plant, and not a mild one. The narrow-leaved milkweeds carry the highest toxin loads in the genus - cardiac glycosides plus a neurotoxic fraction - and they are the milkweeds most often behind livestock deaths in the West. Drying does not destroy it, so plants baled into hay stay dangerous; keep it out of pasture, paddocks and anything cut for feed, and away from pets. The milky sap irritates skin and is a serious eye irritant, so wear gloves and wash before touching your face.

Overview

California's monarch plant. Whorls of narrow leaves and modest greenish-white flowers on a tough summer-dry perennial - the most widespread native milkweed in the state and the main larval host of the western monarch. It dies back every winter, which is precisely why it beats the tropical milkweed nurseries sell.

Narrowleaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) is the milkweed for California, and the plant most likely to put a monarch caterpillar in a West Coast garden. It is the most widespread native milkweed in the state — found from the coast ranges through the Central Valley and Sierra foothills and on into Oregon, Washington, the Great Basin and the Southwest — and it is a principal larval host of the western monarch, the population that breeds inland through summer and clusters in coastal groves from October to February.

It is not a showy plant and it does not pretend to be. Slender 2- to 3-foot stems carry very narrow leaves in whorls of three to six, and the flowers are small, greenish-white and flushed pink, in loose clusters. What matters is when they open: through midsummer into September, in the hottest, driest stretch of a California year, when almost nothing else is offering nectar. Monarchs, hairstreaks, bumble bees, tarantula hawks and a long list of native solitary bees all work them.

Two things make it the right choice rather than merely an available one. It is properly summer-dry adapted, so once established it wants no water at all — it belongs in an unirrigated garden and dies in a watered one. And it goes fully dormant every winter, vanishing to bare ground. That annual dieback is the whole ecological argument against the evergreen tropical milkweed sold in most nurseries, and it is a feature, not a flaw.

      From early spring in the Central Valley - later inland and north - look on the undersides of the narrow leaves for single pale monarch eggs, then for the striped caterpillars.       Young plants are easily crowded out by annual grasses, so clear around them. Established plants send up shoots from rhizomes a foot or two out; pull the outliers in spring while they are soft if you want the clump to stay put. In dry, unwatered ground it barely wanders at all.

      The small pale flowers are unshowy at a distance and extraordinary up close - clusters of greenish-white stars flushed pink, blooming through the hottest, driest months when little else offers nectar.     • No sprays, and no neonicotinoid-treated stock
      A sprayed milkweed is worse than no milkweed, because monarchs lay eggs on it and the caterpillars die. That includes systemic neonicotinoids, which stay in the leaves for a season or more after treatment. Buy from a native-plant nursery that can tell you its stock is untreated, and never apply anything to the plant yourself.

Watch out for

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

Severity is High here for one reason: summer irrigation. A summer-dry Mediterranean plant sitting in warm wet soil rots at the crown, and this is the commonest way a Californian loses an established narrowleaf milkweed. Turn the drip off after year one, keep it out of lawn spray, and plant on a slope or a raised bed on clay.

The narrow-leaved and whorled milkweeds are the most poisonous group in a poisonous genus, carrying a neurotoxic fraction on top of the usual cardiac glycosides, and they are the milkweeds most often responsible for livestock deaths across the western states. Horses, cattle, sheep and goats are all susceptible, and the amounts involved are small - on the order of a fraction of a percent of body weight for sheep. The plant colonizes disturbed and overgrazed ground, which is precisely where hungry animals meet it, and drying does not break the toxins down, so plants cut or baled into hay stay dangerous through the winter.

Watch for: Plants growing in or beside pasture, paddocks, corrals, hay ground or anywhere animals are turned out, especially on overgrazed or disturbed patches. In hay, look for the slender whorled leaves and dry pods mixed into a bale. In an affected animal, signs come on within hours: staggering, weakness, muscle tremors, dilated pupils, laboured breathing, rapid or irregular heartbeat, colic, and collapse or seizures in serious cases.

Prevent: Keep this species out of grazing land and out of anything cut for hay. Site garden plantings well away from paddocks and fence lines that animals can reach over. Never dispose of pulled plants or cut stems where stock can get to them, and never feed pulled milkweed to animals as green feed. Keep pastures in good condition, since poisoning happens when better forage runs short. Keep pets away from the plant and from cut material.

Treat: There is no home remedy and no antidote. If you suspect an animal has eaten it, call your veterinarian immediately and describe the plant - treatment is supportive and time matters. For a pet, call your veterinarian or an animal poison control line. Remove the animals from the source, and remove or fence off the plants before restocking.

This is the reason narrowleaf milkweed needs a deliberate siting decision rather than an automatic one. In an ordinary garden with no grazing animals it is simply an excellent monarch plant; on or beside acreage with stock, plant it where they cannot reach it, or plant a different native.

Bright yellow, black-legged aphids that cluster densely on milkweed stems, buds and new growth. They are conspicuous and very common but rarely fatal to an established plant - and they cannot be sprayed, because any insecticide that kills them also kills the monarch eggs and caterpillars the plant is there to support.

Watch for: Dense colonies of vivid yellow aphids packed along the stems and over the flower buds, sticky honeydew, sooty mold, and ants working the plant.

Prevent: Encourage lady beetles and lacewings and let them do the work; a strong plant carries a heavy colony without real harm. Never use insecticide on a monarch host plant. Soft, over-watered, over-fed growth carries far more of them, so growing the plant hard reduces the problem.

Treat: Blast them off with a jet of water, or wipe them off by hand - checking first for monarch eggs and small caterpillars on the same stems. Otherwise simply tolerate them, since predators usually catch up. Do NOT spray, including with insecticidal soap or neem, which kill caterpillars too.

Reliably heavy on narrowleaf milkweed in California summers, and much worse on plants that are still being irrigated. Turning the water off after the first year does more to reduce them than anything else.

The wild species, and the only form to grow - there are no garden selections and none are needed. Grow

Full sun, sharp drainage, and no summer water after the first year. Plant it in fall so the winter rains do the work. Never fertilize, never irrigate an established plant, and never buy or apply anything that has been treated with a systemic insecticide.

Narrowleaf milkweed wants a hot, sunny, unwatered place with soil that drains. It grows naturally on roadsides, ditch banks, valley grassland and disturbed ground across the West, and it tolerates clay better than most dry-climate natives — provided the clay is not sitting wet in summer. Part sun is acceptable; deep shade is not.

In California and the low West, plant in fall. Setting plugs out between October and mid-December lets the winter rains establish the root system before the first dry summer, and a fall-planted milkweed needs a fraction of the babysitting a spring-planted one does. Water it through its first dry season, then stop. From year two, summer irrigation is the single commonest way to kill this plant, and it also pushes soft growth that aphids love and that runs harder from the rhizomes.

From seed it is straightforward: sow outdoors in fall and let the cool damp winter do the work, or chill the seed damp in the fridge for two to four weeks and sow into deep pots. It germinates more readily than the eastern milkweeds and often flowers in its second year.

Do not fertilize. And do not spray anything, ever — that includes systemic neonicotinoids, which persist in the leaves for a season or more and turn the plant into a trap. Ask a nursery whether its milkweed stock was treated; a good native-plant nursery will know the answer.

Care

Almost nothing. Turn off the water after year one, leave the aphids and the caterpillars alone, pull stray rhizome shoots in spring if you want a tight clump, and cut the dead stems down in winter - the annual dieback is doing real work for the monarchs.

An established narrowleaf milkweed is close to zero-maintenance. It needs no feeding, no water and no staking. The main annual jobs are pulling stray shoots and cutting it down at the end of the year.

It runs a little from rhizomes — shoots surface a foot or two out from the crown, and more so in soil that stays moist. In dry, unwatered ground it stays close to a clump; in an irrigated bed it will colonize. If you want it tight, pull the outliers in spring while they are soft, or let it spread if a patch suits you. Monarch caterpillars are much better served by a patch than by a single plant.

Expect bright yellow oleander aphids on the stems in summer. They look alarming and rarely hurt an established plant; knock them off with water, or leave them for the lady beetles and syrphid larvae. Never spray, because the same treatment kills the monarch eggs and caterpillars on the same leaves. Expect the leaves to be eaten too — that is success.

Wear gloves whenever you cut it. This species is at the toxic end of a toxic genus and the sap is a serious eye irritant. In late fall the whole plant browns off and dies to the ground; cut the stems off at soil level any time over winter and let it stay bare. Do not try to keep it green, and do not replace it with anything that stays green — the dieback is what keeps the monarch parasite load down and the migration on schedule.

Harvest

Nothing to eat - this is one of the most toxic milkweeds and it is grown for monarchs. The one worthwhile harvest is seed, taken the day a pod first splits, and it is the most useful thing you can give a neighbouring garden.

There is no food harvest here and there should not be one. Narrowleaf milkweed sits at the toxic end of a toxic genus, carrying both cardiac glycosides and a neurotoxic fraction, and unlike common milkweed it has no cautious wild-food tradition to hedge. Its yield is monarch caterpillars and pollinators, and the plant is worth far more standing than cut.

The harvest that matters is seed. Watch the slender pods from late summer. When one turns tan and the seam just begins to open, pick it that day — twenty-four hours later the wind has taken the lot. Split the pod over a paper bag, hold the silk tuft and pull downward, and most of the seed comes free in a single motion; the rest can be shaken loose. Let the clean seed dry on a plate for a few days, then store it in a labelled paper envelope somewhere cool and dark.

That envelope is the useful thing. Narrowleaf milkweed is the plant California most needs more of, seed is easy to grow, and handing some to a neighbour who is about to buy tropical milkweed at a garden centre is a genuinely consequential act.

Storage

No food to store. Store seed clean, dry and cool in a paper envelope, where it keeps for several years; a short damp chill before sowing improves the stand. The plant itself overwinters underground and returns each spring.

Nothing here is stored as food. What you store is seed, and it keeps easily. Strip the seed from the floss as soon as you collect the pods, let it air-dry on a plate for a few days so no moisture is trapped with it, and put it in a labelled paper envelope in a cool, dark, dry place. Do not seal it in plastic. Stored that way it stays reliably viable for three or four years.

When you come to sow it, give it a short cool damp period first — two to four weeks in the fridge in barely-damp sand or a wrung-out paper towel — or simply sow it outdoors in fall and let the winter provide it. This species is less demanding about chilling than the eastern milkweeds, but a stratified batch comes up more evenly.

The plant stores itself underground. It dies back to bare ground each winter and returns from a deep root and rhizome system every spring, for a decade or more, getting a little wider each year.

Propagation & seed saving

Seed is the standard route and it is easy - sow outdoors in fall, or chill for two to four weeks and start in deep pots. Rhizome divisions work in late winter. An established patch also self-sows and creeps outward on its own.

Seed is the way narrowleaf milkweed is grown, and it is among the easier native milkweeds to raise. Sow outdoors in fall, barely covered, where you want it, and let the cool damp winter handle the chilling; or refrigerate the seed damp for two to four weeks and sow indoors six to eight weeks before your last frost. Use deep pots or tree tubes — the root goes down hard and fast and resents a shallow cell. Seedlings often flower in their second year, sometimes their first from an early start.

Division is possible and useful for moving a plant you already have. In late winter, while it is fully dormant, dig a section of rhizome carrying a bud and some root and replant it immediately at the same depth in loose, well-drained ground. Water it through the following summer. Success is decent but not guaranteed; milkweed dislikes disturbance and a mature plant is best left alone.

Left to itself, the plant propagates both ways: it creeps outward from rhizomes and it self-sows from wind-borne seed, so a planting quietly becomes a patch. Where a patch is welcome, that is the cheapest monarch habitat there is.

Nutrition

Not a food plant - it is one of the most toxic milkweeds. Its value is ecological: the main larval host of the western monarch across California, and a nectar source that works through the driest, emptiest weeks of the year.

Nothing on this plant is eaten by people. It carries cardiac glycosides plus a neurotoxic fraction, and it is genuinely dangerous to livestock. What follows is about what it feeds, not what it feeds you.

Ecologically it is one of the most important plants in the California flora. It is the principal larval host of the western monarch through the Central Valley, the coast ranges and the Sierra foothills — the caterpillars eat milkweed and nothing else, and they store its toxins to make themselves inedible to birds for the rest of their lives. Its nectar, meanwhile, arrives in the dry season gap: it blooms from June into September, when a California landscape has largely shut down, and that timing makes it disproportionately valuable to bumble bees, solitary bees, wasps, hairstreaks and skippers as well as to monarchs.

The western monarch population has fallen by more than 95 percent since the 1980s, and the overwintering count on the California coast now swings between a few thousand and a few hundred thousand from winter to winter. Breeding-range milkweed is the limiting resource, and in California this is the species to put back.

History

A milkweed used for cordage across the Great Basin and California, better known to twentieth-century range managers as a livestock poisoner, and now one of the most-planted natives in the western monarch recovery effort.

Narrowleaf milkweed carries the same deep human history as the rest of its genus, though a quieter one. Peoples across California and the Great Basin used milkweed stems for fiber — retted, stripped and rolled into cordage for nets, snares and bags — and the latex was used as a chewing gum and applied to skin complaints. Its relatives, showy milkweed above all, were the preferred fiber species, but where narrowleaf grew thick it was used.

Its better-documented twentieth-century reputation is unflattering: as western rangeland was fenced and grazed, the narrow-leaved milkweeds became notorious stock poisoners. They colonize disturbed, overgrazed ground, animals eat them when better forage runs out, and the toxins survive drying, so plants baled into hay keep killing. Range bulletins across the West spent decades telling ranchers how to recognize and remove them, and that history is worth carrying honestly alongside the conservation one.

The modern chapter began when the western monarch overwintering count collapsed. Narrowleaf milkweed became a centrepiece of California's response — grown by native-plant nurseries, sown into roadside and canal-bank restorations, and pushed hard by conservation groups as the region-appropriate alternative to the tropical milkweed the nursery trade had been selling for decades.

Troubleshooting

Most failures are summer water on an established plant. Aphids need no action, eaten leaves are the goal, disappearing entirely in winter is normal and correct, and a patch that spreads is doing monarchs a favour.

It looked fine, then yellowed and collapsed in summer. Almost always summer irrigation on an established plant, or a spot that stays wet. This is a summer-dry species: turn the water off after year one and give it drainage.

It has completely disappeared over winter. Correct and desirable. Narrowleaf milkweed dies back to bare ground every year, and that annual dieback is what keeps the monarch OE parasite in check. Mark the spot so you do not dig into it, and wait for spring.

Bright yellow insects covering the stems. Oleander aphids. Hose them off or leave them for the predators. Do not spray — the same spray kills monarch eggs and caterpillars.

The leaves are being eaten to the stems. That is the plant working. Plant more so the grazing is shared out.

It is coming up outside the clump. Rhizomes, worse in watered soil. Pull the outliers in spring, or let it make a patch, which caterpillars prefer.

No monarchs. Give it two or three seasons and plant a group rather than one plant. Also check nothing nearby is being sprayed, and confirm your plants were not nursery-treated with a systemic insecticide.

My milkweed is evergreen and never dies back. Then it is not this plant — it is almost certainly tropical milkweed, which should be cut back hard or replaced.

Growing across climates

Hardy roughly zones 5-10 through California, the Southwest, the Great Basin and the interior Northwest. Fall-plant it in Mediterranean climates. One firm exception: do not plant milkweed within about five miles of the California coastal overwintering groves.

Narrowleaf milkweed is adapted to hot dry summers and cool wet winters, and it is hardy roughly zones 5-10. California (zones 8-10): its heartland — the Central Valley, the coast ranges, the Sierra foothills and the southern interior. Plant in fall, water through the first summer, then leave it dry. Southwest and low desert (zones 8-10): good with a little supplemental water in the first years and afternoon shade at the hottest sites. Great Basin and interior Northwest (zones 5-7): reliably hardy; it emerges later and blooms later, and fall sowing outdoors is the easiest start. Pacific Northwest west of the Cascades: it grows, but wet winters are the risk — give it the sharpest drainage and the sunniest spot you have.

Now the exception that matters most on this page. Do not plant any milkweed within roughly five miles of the California coastal overwintering groves — the eucalyptus, cypress and pine stands from Marin to San Diego where western monarchs cluster from October through February. Milkweed was historically scarce along that immediate coast, and planting it near the groves encourages monarchs to break diapause and breed in winter instead of overwintering, which raises parasite loads and disrupts the migration. If you garden on the California coast, check the Xerces Society's overwintering-site guidance before planting; inland of that band, narrowleaf milkweed is exactly the right plant. Outside the West entirely, use the milkweed native to your own region rather than this one.
