Multiflora Rose
The hazard is mechanical. Multiflora rose is armed with stout curved prickles that catch and tear, and a thicket will shred bare arms and clothing - wear leather gloves, heavy sleeves, and eye protection, and cut your way in rather than push through. Its hips and petals are edible like any rose's, small and seedy, and only from plants that have never been sprayed; scrape the fine seed hairs out of hips, since they irritate skin, mouth, and throat. Eating it is no reason to keep it.
Overview
Handed out by the government as a living fence and now a listed noxious weed across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic. It swallows pasture and woodland edge in impenetrable thorny thickets, and it is the wild reservoir of rose rosette disease, the untreatable virus that kills garden roses.
Multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora) is the thorny thicket rose you meet on every neglected fenceline, pasture edge, and woodland margin in the eastern half of the country. For a fortnight in late spring it is genuinely lovely — a foam of small, fragrant, white flowers. For the rest of the year it is 10 to 15 feet of arching, prickle-armed cane that roots wherever it touches down and makes ground no animal and no person can walk through.
It got here on purpose. Introduced as rose rootstock, it was then promoted for decades by conservation agencies as a ‘living fence’ for livestock and as wildlife cover, and states distributed it to farmers by the millions. By the 1960s the same agencies were calling it a pest, and it is now a listed noxious weed across much of its range — Iowa, Missouri, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois among others — where planting or selling it is prohibited.
There is a second reason gardeners in particular need to know it. Multiflora rose is the wild reservoir of rose rosette disease, an untreatable mite-borne virus that kills roses. Wild multiflora upwind of a rose bed is a standing threat to it, and removing the multiflora is one of the few preventive measures that actually works. The one test that settles it: fringed stipulesWhere each leafstalk joins the cane there is a small flange called a stipule. Rose Rosette Disease High
A fatal virus spread by a tiny wind-blown eriophyid mite, producing distorted 'witches'-broom' clusters of growth, excessive thorniness, and persistent bright-red shoots. There is no cure, and an infected plant is a reservoir that infects every rose downwind. Multiflora rose hedgerows are the wild reservoir, so it's worst in the central and eastern US.
Watch for: Bunched, distorted, hyper-thorny growth; shoots that stay unnaturally red instead of maturing green; thickened stems; flowers that ball or distort. Distinguish from harmless new growth, which is also red but matures normally.
Prevent: Inspect new plants before buying, space roses so canes don't touch, remove any wild multiflora rose nearby, and avoid overhead high-pressure blowing that spreads the mites.
Treat: None - dig out the entire plant including roots, bag it, and discard (don't compost). The soil is safe to replant after remaining roots are removed; it's the mites and living tissue that carry the virus.
This is the plant the reservoir warning is about. The disease is killing multiflora stands across the central and eastern US and was once studied as a biological control for it - but a dying thicket is an active source of infected mites sitting upwind of every garden rose in range, so it is a reason to clear the stand faster, not to leave it to collapse on its own.
Pasture & Woodland-Edge Thickets (ecological harm) High
Multiflora rose converts open pasture, old field, fencerow, and woodland edge into impenetrable thorny thicket. Arching canes root wherever their tips touch soil, so a single plant walks outward and stands merge into continuous cover that excludes forage grasses, native shrubs, and tree seedlings, cuts usable grazing acreage, and blocks the movement of livestock, people, and wildlife. It tolerates sun to moderate shade, most soils, and drought once established, and it responds to being cut by producing more stems than it had.
Watch for: Arching thorny canes spreading outward along fencelines, pasture edges, and hedgerows, with cane tips rooted into the ground. Foam of small white flowers along an edge in late spring - the easiest way to map an infestation. Ground going out of use because nothing can walk through it.
Prevent: Never plant it, and grub out first- and second-year plants while they still pull. Keep pasture competitive and hedgerows walked, since the plant establishes in thin, undergrazed, or neglected ground first. Remove fruiting plants near woodland edges before birds move the seed inward.
Treat: Grub out small plants crown and all. On established plants, cut low and treat the stump immediately from late summer through the dormant season, or mow three to six times a season for two to four consecutive years, or grub crowns out mechanically; goats browse it hard and suppress it on steep ground. Any herbicide must carry a label listing the site - pasture, rangeland, fencerow, woodland, non-crop - and pasture products carry grazing and haying restrictions; follow the label, and use an aquatic-labelled product, with a permit or licensed applicator where required, anywhere near water.
Massive Bird-Spread Seed Bank High
The reason multiflora control is measured in years. A large plant can set on the order of half a million seeds in a season, packed into pea-sized hips that hang on the canes right through winter and are eaten by birds and small mammals during the leanest months, then dropped anywhere they perch. The seed germinates readily and stays viable in the soil for a decade or more, so ground cleared of every visible plant keeps producing seedling flushes for years, and a single surviving thicket upwind re-seeds the whole neighborhood.
Watch for: Dense clusters of small red hips persisting on bare canes into midwinter. Birds working thickets in late winter. Uniform flushes of rose seedlings each spring along fences, under perch trees, and on ground cleared in previous seasons.
Prevent: Remove the biggest fruiting plants first to shut off the seed supply, cut plants before hips form where you cannot remove them yet, and bag hip-bearing material rather than piling it at a wood's edge.
Treat: Accept a multi-year program: kill the crowns, then walk the same ground every spring for several years pulling the seedling flush while it is ankle-high, and replant cleared areas with competitive natives so bare ground is not simply re-colonized.
Rootstock Suckers in Garden Roses Medium
The route by which this noxious weed turns up inside tidy gardens. Multiflora is the traditional understock for grafted garden roses, so a shoot arising from below the knobby graft union is multiflora, not the variety you bought. Left alone it outgrows and starves the grafted top, and if the top dies over a hard winter the gardener is left with a multiflora rose flowering small and white where a named variety used to be - and, in a listed state, with a noxious weed.
Watch for: Vigorous thorny shoots from below the graft union or from the soil beside the plant, with different foliage - paler, finer, 7 to 9 leaflets, and fringed comb-edged stipules. Sprays of small white flowers on a bush sold as something else.
Prevent: Plant own-root roses where you can, which removes the issue entirely. On grafted roses, set the bud union at the correct depth for your zone and check the base of the plant a few times each season.
Treat: Tear suckers off at their point of origin rather than cutting them flush - a clean cut leaves buds that produce several shoots in place of one. Where the grafted top has died and only the understock remains, dig the whole plant out; it is now a multiflora rose.

For a fast non-rose wildlife hedge, ninebark, chokeberry, elderberry, and American beautyberry do the same job. Ask a local native-plant nursery which suits your soil.
Grow
How to recognize it and why never to plant it: fringed comb-like stipules at every leaf base (no native rose has them), 7-9 leaflets, sprays of many small white flowers rather than a few large pink ones, and pea-sized red hips that hang on all winter.
Never plant it — identify it, and identify it precisely, because ‘wild rose’ covers several perfectly good natives that ought to be left alone.
The fringed stipule is the test. Where a leafstalk meets the cane sits a narrow flange called a stipule. On multiflora rose it is cut into a fine comb of fringes along its edge, visible without a lens. On every native North American rose the stipule edge is smooth or at most gland-dotted. This character works in every season the plant has leaves and settles the question on its own.
Leaves and canes. Compound leaves of 7 to 9 leaflets (natives usually carry 5 to 7), on long, green, arching canes reaching 10 to 15 feet, armed with stout, downward-curved prickles. Canes arch over and root where the tips touch soil, so a single plant walks outward into a thicket.
Flowers. Branched sprays of many small white (rarely pale pink) fragrant flowers about an inch across, all opening together in late spring. Native roses bear few, large, pink flowers. This is the giveaway visible from a car window.
Hips. Tight clusters of firm, pea-sized red hips that persist on bare canes all winter — native rose hips are larger and fewer.
It grows in full sun to fairly deep shade, in almost any soil that is not waterlogged, and it responds to being cut by growing back thicker. There is no site condition that will contain it.
Propagation & seed saving
How it spreads: an enormous crop of bird-carried hips whose seed stays viable in the soil for years, plus arching canes that root where their tips touch down, plus hard resprouting from any crown that is cut and not killed.
Three mechanisms, and control has to interrupt all of them.
Seed, in absurd quantity. A large multiflora rose can set on the order of half a million seeds in a season, packed into pea-sized hips that stay on the canes all winter and get eaten by birds and small mammals through the leanest months. The seed passes through and germinates readily, so new plants appear under every perch, fence wire, and hedgerow tree. Worse, the seed is long-lived in the soil — commonly cited as viable for a decade or more — which is why a cleared pasture keeps producing seedlings years after the last bush came out.
Tip layering. The long canes arch over and root where their growing tips touch the ground, so the plant advances outward under its own power and a thicket that looks like a dozen shrubs is often a handful of individuals walking.
Resprouting. Cut a multiflora rose and it comes back from the crown with more stems than it had. Mowing, brush-hogging, and cutting are all useful only as part of a repeated regime; done once, they thicken the stand.
The plant that gets into most gardens arrives by a fourth route entirely: multiflora is the traditional rootstock under grafted garden roses, so it appears as a sucker from below the graft union. If the grafted variety dies and the sucker survives, the gardener now owns a multiflora rose.
Care
Removal, not care: grub out young plants, cut-stump-treat or repeatedly mow established ones over two to four years, wear leather against the prickles, and keep walking the ground each spring for the seedling flush from a decade-long seed bank.
Dress for it first. The recurved prickles catch and tear, and a thicket will shred bare arms. Leather gloves and gauntlets, heavy sleeves, and eye protection are not optional, and you cut your way in rather than pushing through.
Small plants: grub them out. First- and second-year plants come out with a mattock or a weed wrench in moist soil, crown and roots together, and that ends them. This is the entire control program if you catch a pasture or a hedgerow early.
Established plants: cut and kill the crown. Cutting alone makes a denser bush, so pair it with one of three things. Cut-stump treatment — cut low and paint or spray the fresh cut immediately, before it seals — is the standard, most effective from late summer through the dormant season. Repeated mowing works on open ground: three to six cuts a season for two to four consecutive years genuinely exhausts the crowns, and this is the classic pasture answer. Grubbing with a tractor-mounted implement removes the crown outright on ground you can get equipment onto. Goats browse it hard and are a real tool for steep or thorny ground, though they suppress rather than eradicate.
Any herbicide you use must carry a label that lists the site you are treating — pasture, rangeland, fencerow, woodland, or non-crop area. Read and follow that label: it is legally binding, and pasture and hayfield products carry grazing and haying restrictions and replant intervals that matter if livestock or a hay crop are involved. Do not treat within a wetland, ditch, pond margin, or streambank unless the product is specifically labeled for aquatic sites, which in most states also means a permit or a licensed applicator.
Then keep coming back. The seed bank outlives the plants by a decade, so walk the ground every spring for several years and pull the seedling flush while it is ankle-high. Replant cleared ground with something that will hold it — a native rose (Carolina, Virginia, swamp, or prairie rose), ninebark, chokeberry, elderberry, or American beautyberry all make the same kind of thicket or hedge without any of this.
Nutrition
The hips and petals are edible like any rose's - small, seedy, and a footnote rather than a crop, from unsprayed plants only. Ecologically the plant runs at a heavy loss, converting pasture and woodland edge into thorny monoculture.
Honesty first: multiflora rose is a rose, so its hips and petals are edible exactly as any garden rose’s are. The hips carry vitamin C and make a decent tea or a strained jelly. But they are barely a quarter-inch across and mostly seed, so this is a curiosity rather than a harvest, and the standard rose rules apply: only from plants that have never been sprayed — which excludes most roadside and pasture thickets, since these are exactly the plants people treat — and strain out the fine seed hairs, which irritate mouth and throat.
None of that is a reason to keep it, and it should never become one. If you want rose hips, the native roses do it better: Carolina, Virginia, swamp, and prairie rose all bear larger, fleshier hips, all belong where they grow, and none of them is a noxious weed. If you want the very best hips of any rose, that is rugosa, which is covered under the main rose entry.
Ecologically multiflora runs at a heavy loss. It converts open pasture, old field, and woodland edge into thorny monoculture that excludes forage, native shrubs, and tree seedlings, cuts usable grazing acreage, and blocks livestock and wildlife movement. Birds do eat the hips, which is precisely how it spreads, and that modest wildlife value is dwarfed by the native shrub communities it replaces. The best thing this plant can do nutritionally is come out and be replaced by something that feeds more than the birds that plant it.
Troubleshooting
Telling it from native roses, the rose rosette question, why cutting makes it worse, the rootstock sucker in your own rose bed, whether it is illegal, and what to plant instead.
Is this multiflora or a native rose? Check the stipule at the base of a leafstalk: fringed like a comb means multiflora, smooth means native. Confirm with flowers — many small white ones in a spray, versus a few large pink ones — and leaflet count, 7 to 9 versus 5 to 7. Do not remove a wild rose without checking; the natives are worth having.
Will it give my garden roses rose rosette disease? Not directly, but it is the wild reservoir. The disease is a virus carried by a tiny wind-blown eriophyid mite, and wild multiflora stands are where it persists in the landscape. Removing multiflora near a rose planting is one of the few genuinely effective preventive measures, along with spacing roses so canes do not touch. If a garden rose develops bunched, hyper-thorny, persistently red witches’-broom growth, there is no cure: dig out the whole plant, roots included, and bag it.
I cut it down and it came back worse. Expected — it resprouts hard from the crown. Cutting has to be paired with immediate stump treatment, a multi-year mowing regime, or grubbing the crown out.

History
Brought over as rose rootstock, then promoted for decades by conservation agencies as a living fence, erosion control, and wildlife cover and handed out to farmers by the million - before the same agencies reclassified it as a noxious weed.
Multiflora rose arrived in the United States in the 1860s as rootstock for grafting ornamental roses, a job it still does. Its second career was the destructive one. From the 1930s onward, federal and state conservation agencies promoted it enthusiastically: as a ‘living fence’ that would hold livestock without wire, as erosion control on gullied ground, as wildlife cover and food, and later as a crash barrier and headlight screen in highway medians. Extension services and soil conservation districts distributed millions of plants to farmers across the eastern and central states, often free.
It did everything it was advertised to do, and then kept going. By the 1960s the same agencies were describing it as a pest; by the following decades states were listing it as a noxious weed, and landowners who had been given the plants were being told to remove them at their own expense. Estimates of tens of millions of infested acres across the East and Midwest are routine.
The last chapter is the strangest. Rose rosette disease, a native North American virus, moved into the vast multiflora populations and began killing them, and it was for a while studied as a potential biological control for exactly that reason. It then jumped to cultivated roses, where it is now one of the most serious problems in American rose growing. The living fence turned out to be a reservoir for a disease that kills the plant it was grafted onto in the first place.
Growing across climates
Invasive across roughly zones 4-9 through the eastern and central US, worst in the humid Midwest, Appalachians, and mid-Atlantic; limited mainly by severe cold, deep drought, and saturated soil, and less of a problem in the arid West.
Multiflora rose is hardy from about zone 4 to zone 9 and infests essentially the entire eastern and central United States, with its heaviest impact through the humid Midwest, Appalachians, Ohio Valley, and mid-Atlantic — grazing country with plenty of hedgerow, old field, and woodland edge, which is exactly the habitat it takes. It handles full sun to moderate shade, most soils, and periodic drought once established.
Its real limits are at the margins: it thins out in the northern Plains and upper Midwest where winters are severe enough to kill canes back hard, it does poorly on saturated or very wet ground, and in the arid and Mountain West it persists along irrigation but rarely takes off the way it does east of the Plains. Sustained deep shade under a closed canopy also slows it, though it will hold on for years waiting for a gap.
For control the climate note that matters is timing. In cold-winter regions the dormant season is long, the red hips make thickets easy to find, and frozen ground carries equipment — so cut in winter and follow up through the growing season. In the mild South the plant holds leaves later and the late-summer-to-fall reserve movement window for cut-stump work is longer, so watch the plant rather than the calendar. Everywhere, the multi-year rhythm is the same: kill the crowns, then patrol the seedlings.
