Monstera
Not food, with one narrow exception. Leaves, stems, roots and UNRIPE fruit are packed with calcium oxalate raphides: chewing any of them burns the mouth at once, with drooling and swelling, in cats, dogs and children. Only the fully ripe fruit is edible, and an indoor plant essentially never makes one - unripe monstera fruit blisters the mouth. Call a vet or poison control for a chewed leaf rather than waiting. Gloves when pruning; the sap stings skin and eyes.
Overview
The big architectural climber with the holes in its leaves. Everything on it burns a chewed mouth - leaves, stems, roots and unripe fruit alike - and only one thing on the whole plant is edible, which is a fully ripe fruit your houseplant will never produce.
Monstera (Monstera deliciosa) is the plant with the holes in its leaves: a rainforest climber from southern Mexico and Central America that has become the defining large houseplant of the last decade. Given a pole and decent light it will fill a corner — six feet tall and five across is unremarkable indoors — carrying glossy leaves two feet wide, slashed to the margin and punched through with oval holes.
Those holes are the whole point of the plant and they are not there from the start. A young monstera makes plain heart-shaped leaves. As it climbs, each new leaf comes out larger and more deeply cut than the one before it, so fenestration is a sign of maturity and good conditions rather than a variety. Botanists have argued about what the holes are for — letting wind and heavy rain through, or, on the best current evidence, spreading a given amount of leaf tissue across a wider area to catch more of the moving sunflecks that reach a forest floor. Either way, a monstera that is not making holes is telling you something about its light or its support.
On safety, the rule has one exception and it is worth stating precisely. Leaves, stems, aerial roots and unripe fruit are all loaded with calcium oxalate raphides — microscopic needle-shaped crystals held under pressure that fire into the mouth of anything that chews them. The result is immediate burning pain, drooling and swelling, in cats, dogs and children alike. The exception is that a fully ripe fruit is genuinely edible, which is what deliciosa means and why the plant is also called Mexican breadfruit. That matters far less than it sounds: an indoor monstera will essentially never flower, let alone ripen a fruit that takes the better part of a year to mature. Treat the whole plant as not-food and read the fruit section as background.
Calibrate the risk honestly. This is a painful mouth injury, not organ damage — nothing like a true lily (Lilium), which kills cats by destroying their kidneys with no warning pain at all. Both deserve a phone call; only one is a race against the clock.

Root Rot from Overwatering High
The single most common way an indoor plant dies. Soil-borne fungi rot the roots and stem base in potting mix that is kept wet, in a pot without drainage, or in a saucer that is never emptied - and it is worst in winter, when short days and cool rooms mean the plant uses a fraction of the water it did in summer while the watering schedule stays the same.
Watch for: Lower leaves yellowing while the mix stays damp, a sour smell from the pot, stems going soft, brown or black at the soil line, and a plant that wilts even though the soil is wet.
Prevent: Water by checking the mix rather than the calendar - only when the top inch or two is dry - use a pot with drainage holes, empty the saucer after every watering, and cut back sharply on water from November to February.
Treat: Tip the plant out, cut away every soft brown root, and repot the healthy remainder in fresh mix in a clean pot, watering sparingly until it recovers. If most of the root system has gone, take clean cuttings from the healthy top growth and start the plant again - that usually works better than nursing the original.
On a monstera the fix is usually a cutting rather than a rescue: take the top with a node and two aerial roots, root it in moss, and let the old stump take its chances.
Mealybugs Medium
Small sap-sucking insects that hide as white cottony tufts tucked into leaf joints, along stems and under leaves. Indoors there is nothing to eat them, so a small infestation becomes a permanent one - they weaken growth, deform new leaves and coat everything below in sticky honeydew that turns sooty black.
Watch for: White cottony specks where a leaf stalk meets the stem, sticky patches on leaves or the surface beneath the plant, black sooty film, and new growth that comes out puckered or stunted.
Prevent: Inspect any new plant carefully and keep it apart from the others for a few weeks, check leaf joints whenever you water, and wipe the leaves occasionally - most indoor infestations arrive on a new purchase and spread from there.
Treat: Dab each colony with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, then spray the whole plant with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, covering leaf undersides and joints. Repeat weekly for at least a month, because eggs keep hatching. Cut off badly infested growth rather than trying to save it.
On a monstera they shelter under the sheath at each node and among the aerial roots against the moss pole - pull the pole away from the stem and look before deciding the plant is clean.
Oxalate Burn from Chewing Medium
Leaves, stems, aerial roots and unripe fruit all contain calcium oxalate raphides - needle-shaped crystals held under pressure in specialised cells that fire on contact. Chewing any of them drives the crystals into the lips, tongue and throat, producing immediate burning pain, heavy drooling, swelling and often vomiting. It is rarely life-threatening because the pain stops the animal or child at once, but swelling occasionally becomes serious. UNRIPE FRUIT is the worst case on this plant: the crystal load is high and concentrated, and a bite causes severe mouth and throat pain. Only fully ripe fruit, whose hexagonal scales have lifted away on their own, is safe to eat, and a houseplant will never produce one. The sap also irritates skin and causes painful eye injury.
Watch for: Pawing at the mouth, drooling, refusal to eat, retching, or swollen lips and tongue in a pet; a crying child near a chewed leaf or a green fruit; and any change in breathing or in the voice, which is the sign that matters most.
Prevent: Keep the lower leaves and any wandering aerial roots away from pet and toddler level, bag prunings and rooting cuttings immediately rather than leaving them on a counter, wipe up guttation droplets from leaf edges, and wear gloves when cutting so the sap never reaches your eyes. If a fruit ever forms on an outdoor plant, keep it out of reach until the scales lift by themselves.
Treat: Call a veterinarian, an animal poison line, or poison control immediately - do not wait to see how it develops. Rinse the mouth with water and follow the advice you are given. Go to an emergency clinic or emergency room at once if drooling will not stop, if swallowing is difficult, or if breathing or the voice changes; treat a bitten unripe fruit as more urgent than a chewed leaf. For sap in an eye, flush with running water for 15 minutes and be seen the same day.
Thrips Medium
Slender dark insects a millimetre or two long that rasp at the leaf surface and drink the sap that wells up, leaving silvery-bronze scarring, tiny black dots of excrement, and new leaves that open puckered and distorted. They breed fast in warm rooms, hide inside unfurling leaves, and are the hardest indoor pest to clear because eggs sit inside the leaf tissue and part of the life cycle is spent down in the potting mix.
Watch for: Silvery or bronze streaking on leaf surfaces with black specks alongside it, distorted or stunted new growth, and slim dark insects that run for cover when a leaf is turned over - tap a leaf over white paper to see them move.
Prevent: Quarantine every new plant for a few weeks and inspect the newest unfurling leaves, where thrips concentrate. Keep plants from touching each other so a population cannot simply walk across, and check anything that has summered outdoors before it comes back inside.
Treat: Wipe or rinse the foliage to knock the adults down, then spray thoroughly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, undersides included, and repeat every five to seven days for at least a month - eggs are laid inside the leaf and pupae sit in the mix, so one round never finishes it. Cut off badly scarred leaves; they will not recover. Blue sticky traps catch the flying adults and tell you when the population is finally gone.
The pest that most reliably ruins a monstera, because the scarring lands on huge leaves that stay on the plant for years. Check every new furled leaf as it opens.
Spider Mites Low
Nearly invisible mites that thrive in the hot, dry air of a heated house, feeding on the undersides of leaves and leaving a fine pale stippling that spreads until the whole leaf looks dusty and bronzed. Severe infestations spin fine webbing between leaves and stems.
Watch for: Fine pale speckling across the upper leaf surface, a dull bronzed cast to the foliage, and gossamer webbing in the leaf joints - hold a sheet of white paper under a leaf and tap it to see the mites drop.
Prevent: Raise the humidity around the plant, keep it away from heating vents and radiators, and rinse or wipe the leaves regularly - spider mites struggle on foliage that is clean and not baking in dry air.
Treat: Rinse the whole plant thoroughly under a shower, paying attention to leaf undersides, then treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil and repeat every five to seven days for three or four rounds to catch newly hatched mites.
Fungus Gnats Low
Small dark flies that drift up from the pot when it is disturbed. The adults are harmless; their larvae live in the top inch of permanently damp potting mix and feed on organic matter and, when numerous, on fine roots. They are less a pest in their own right than a symptom that the mix is being kept too wet.
Watch for: Little black flies around the pot and at nearby windows, and larvae - tiny translucent maggots with black heads - in the surface of mix that never dries out.
Prevent: Let the top inch or two of mix dry out between waterings, which breaks the life cycle on its own, avoid standing water in saucers, and top-dress with a layer of coarse grit or sand so adults cannot lay eggs at the surface.
Treat: Dry the mix out further, hang yellow sticky traps to catch the adults, and for a persistent population water in a Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis product, which kills the larvae without harming the plant. Repeat until the traps come up empty.
A damp moss pole is a second breeding site people miss - let the pole dry between waterings too, or the gnats simply come back from it.

Fenestrated leaves with bold blocks and sectors of pure white against dark green, often split half and half.
Pure white variegation in bold blocks and half-leaves, and the plant that drove the 2020 speculative market. The variegation is a chimera, so it drifts constantly: expect all-green leaves and all-white leaves on the same plant. Prune back to a node showing good pattern to steer it, and remove entirely white leaves - they have no chlorophyll, cannot feed themselves and eventually kill the stem they are on. It needs the brightest indirect light you have and burns in direct sun.
Smaller fenestrated leaves on a slimmer, faster-climbing stem with shorter gaps between leaves.
Sold as a smaller, faster, more compact monstera with tighter spacing between leaves and a slimmer stem - useful if you want the look in less floor space. Worth knowing that the distinction is contested: many botanists treat borsigiana as no more than a growth form of Monstera deliciosa rather than a separate variety, so two plants sold under different labels may be the same thing.
Small deeply split leaves 4-8 inches long on a fast, slender climbing vine with fine aerial roots.
Sold everywhere as mini monstera or mini split-leaf philodendron, and it is neither a Monstera nor a Philodendron - it is Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, a Southeast Asian relative. It is in the same family and carries the same calcium oxalate raphides, so the safety rules are identical. The reason to know the difference: it grows far faster, stays much smaller, splits its leaves from young rather than with maturity, and needs a pole almost immediately or it becomes a tangle.
Narrow pointed leaves 4-10 inches long, perforated with holes that stop short of the leaf margin, on slender trailing vines.
A different species sold alongside the big one and cared for identically: smaller, thinner leaves whose holes sit inside the leaf and do not reach the edge, on a vine that trails from a basket as happily as it climbs. Same family, same calcium oxalate crystals, same rules. It wants slightly more humidity and slightly more consistent moisture than deliciosa and stays a fraction of the size.
Leaves to 2 ft or more, deeply cut to the edge and perforated with oval holes, on a stout climbing stem with thick aerial roots.
The plant itself: enormous glossy leaves slashed to the margin and punched with oval holes, on a thick climbing stem with heavy aerial roots. Given a pole and good light it fills a corner within a few years and keeps going. This is the form that bears the edible fruit outdoors in the tropics, and the form that has naturalized in south Florida and Hawaii, so keep it in a pot in those states.
Fenestrated leaves flecked and marbled throughout with creamy yellow, on a slower-growing climbing stem.
Creamy-yellow variegation speckled and splashed across the leaf like a star field, produced by tissue culture from a stable mutation - which is why, unlike the chimeral kinds, it does not revert and every plant is reliably marked. Slower than the plain form and more sensitive to direct sun, which scorches the pale areas first. Once eye-wateringly expensive, now widely available.
Grow
Bright indirect light, a chunky bark-based mix, water when the top two inches are dry, and a moss pole from day one - the support is what produces the big fenestrated leaves.
Light. Bright indirect — the brightest spot in the room that never gets direct sun on the leaves. A few feet back from an east or south window, or right beside a north one. Direct midday sun bleaches and scorches within days. A monstera will live in low light, but it stays juvenile there: small, solid, unfenestrated leaves and long bare stretches of stem.
Support, from day one. This is the difference between a monstera and a disappointment. In the wild it climbs a trunk, and the aerial roots gripping that trunk feed the leaf above them. Sink a moss pole, coir pole or wooden slab into the pot when you plant it, tie each new section of stem in loosely, and keep the pole damp when you water. Leaf size and fenestration follow the climb. A monstera left to sprawl across the floor never develops its adult form no matter how old it gets, and staking one after two years of leaning is a wrestling match.
Mix. Chunky and free-draining: ordinary potting mix cut with a generous third of orchid bark plus perlite, or a bagged aroid mix. Always a pot with drainage holes. Dense peat compost holds water around thick roots that expect air, and that is where root rot starts.
Water. When the top two inches are dry, water until it runs out of the base, then empty the saucer. In a bark mix you can water generously because the excess drains straight through. Cut back sharply from November to February.
Aerial roots. Those thick brown ropes are normal and healthy. Guide them into the moss pole or tuck them down into the pot; you can shorten one that is crossing a walkway, but do not strip them all off, because a monstera without aerial roots climbs badly.
Do not plant it outdoors in a frost-free climate. Monstera is listed as an invasive plant in Hawaii and has naturalized in south Florida, where it climbs standing trees and smothers the canopy. Keep it potted there, and put cuttings and old mix in the trash rather than the yard or the green-waste bin.
Care
Wipe the leaves, feed through summer, prune to a node with gloves on, and repot every couple of years - and expect it to need more floor space every single year.
Wipe the leaves. On a plant with two-foot leaves this matters more than on any other houseplant: dust visibly dulls them and measurably cuts the light the plant can use. A damp cloth on both sides every month or two is enough, and skip the leaf-shine sprays, which clog the pores.
Feed at half strength every three or four weeks from spring to early autumn and not at all in winter. Flush the pot through with plenty of plain water once or twice a year to wash out accumulated fertilizer salts, which show up as brown leaf edges.
Repot every two years or so, one size up, in spring or summer, into fresh chunky mix. A monstera in a pot it has outgrown stops making bigger leaves, and a big plant in a light plastic pot eventually falls over — a heavy ceramic or a weighted base is worth having.
Pruning is how you keep a monstera to the space you have. Cut just above a node, never in the middle of a bare stem section, and take whole leaves off at the base of their stalk rather than trimming leaf edges into shapes. Removing the growing tip makes the plant branch from lower nodes, which is the way to a bushier rather than a taller plant. Do all of it with gloves — the cut ends weep freely and that sap is the hazardous part — and bag the offcuts rather than leaving them on a counter where an animal can find them.
Two things people worry about that are fine. Droplets of water at the leaf edges in the morning are guttation: the plant pushing out excess sap through pores at the leaf margin, usually after a heavy watering. Wipe them up rather than letting them dry into white spots on the floor, and keep them off skin, since the fluid carries the same irritants as the sap. And a new leaf that comes out with the holes already closed on an otherwise thriving plant is simply the plant putting out a leaf faster than it can invest in it — the next one usually corrects.
The fruit - and why yours will not make one
Monstera deliciosa bears one of the few genuinely edible fruits in the arum family, and it is the single riskiest thing to eat badly: unripe flesh is loaded with the same needle crystals as the leaves. Indoor plants almost never fruit at all.
The species name is not decoration. Monstera deliciosa bears a real fruit — a green cob eight to twelve inches long, covered in hexagonal scales — and when it is fully ripe it tastes like a cross between pineapple and banana. It is sold in Mexico and occasionally in Florida markets as ceriman, and it is one of very few edible things in a family otherwise defined by burning mouths.
Start with the part that matters: your houseplant will not produce one. Monstera flowers only when it is mature, well supported, and growing in conditions close to its native climate — in practice outdoors in the frost-free tropics and subtropics, or in a large heated conservatory. It takes a plant many years to get there, and the fruit itself then takes roughly ten to fourteen months to ripen on the plant. A monstera in a living room in Ohio is not going to do any of that.
If you ever do meet one, the ripeness rule is absolute, because the unripe fruit is genuinely dangerous to eat. Unripe flesh is packed with the same calcium oxalate raphides as the leaves, in quantity, and biting into it causes immediate searing pain and swelling of the mouth and throat. There is no cooking or peeling trick that fixes an unripe monstera fruit.
Ripening happens in a way that removes the guesswork. Over several days the hexagonal scales lift and fall away in sections, starting at the base and working toward the tip, exposing soft cream-coloured flesh underneath. You eat only the sections that have opened by themselves. Where the scales are still attached, the flesh beneath is not ready, and it will tell you so instantly. Fruit is usually cut when the base scales start to lift and stood upright in a paper bag or a jar to finish over a week or two, eaten section by section as it opens.
Two further honest notes. Small black specks in the flesh are oxalate residue and are normally picked out. And even properly ripe fruit gives some people a scratchy throat or itchy lips, so a first taste should be a small one.
Nothing else on the plant is edible under any circumstances — not leaves, not stems, not aerial roots, not the flower spike.
Troubleshooting
A chewed leaf comes first - call a vet or poison control rather than waiting. After that: no holes means light or support, yellow leaves mean water, and brown crispy edges mean air or salts.
A pet or a child has chewed a leaf, a stem or an aerial root. Call your veterinarian, an animal poison line, or poison control now — do not wait to see how it develops. Rinse the mouth out with water, take a piece of the plant with you if you go in, and follow the advice you are given. Go to an emergency clinic or emergency room immediately if drooling will not stop, if there is retching or an inability to swallow, or if there is any change in breathing or in the voice. If anyone has bitten an unripe fruit, treat that as more serious than a leaf and call straight away.
My new leaves have no holes. The most common monstera complaint, and it has three causes in order of likelihood: not enough light, no support to climb, and a plant that is simply still young. Move it brighter, sink a moss pole in, tie the stem to it, and be patient — fenestration arrives as the plant climbs, not with age alone.
Yellow leaves, starting low down, mix always damp. Overwatering and the start of root rot. Let the mix dry properly, water less, and check the pot actually drains and is not sitting in a full cachepot. One yellow leaf at the base of a thriving plant is just an old leaf being retired.
Brown crispy edges and tips. Dry indoor air, fertilizer salts in the pot, or letting it go bone dry repeatedly. Flush the pot through with plenty of plain water, ease off the feed, water a little sooner, and move it away from radiators and heating vents.
Long bare stem with leaves only at the top. Too little light, and usually no support. Cut the top off just below a node with a couple of aerial roots, root it, and start it up a pole; the old stump will resprout.
Silvery scarring, black specks, distorted new leaves. Thrips — the pest that most reliably ruins a monstera. See Threats; it takes a month of repeat treatment rather than a single spray.
Aerial roots everywhere. Normal. Guide them into the pole or the pot, shorten one that is genuinely in the way, and do not strip them all off.
Beads of water on the leaf edges in the morning. Guttation, not disease. Wipe them up and keep them off skin.
My variegated monstera is coming up plain green (or pure white). Expected on the chimeral kinds, and manageable. Prune back to a node showing the pattern you want. Fully white leaves have no chlorophyll, cannot feed themselves and will eventually cost you the stem, so remove those too.
Propagation & seed saving
Cut below a node with an aerial root attached and root it in water, moss or straight into mix. A leaf on its own, however handsome, will never become a plant.
Monstera propagates readily, with one rule that catches everyone: the cutting must include a node — the knuckle on the stem where a leaf and an aerial root emerge. A single leaf with a length of stalk will live in a vase for months, may even push out roots, and will never grow into a plant, because all the growing tissue is in the node. Cuttings that include a node and a stubby aerial root establish fastest of all.
Take the cutting in spring or summer with a clean blade, half an inch below a node, keeping one or two leaves on the piece. Let the cut end dry for an hour or two.
In water: stand it in a jar with the node submerged and the leaves clear, somewhere bright, changing the water weekly. Roots appear within two to four weeks. Pot it up once the roots are two or three inches long — water roots are brittle and adapt badly to soil, so a cutting left in a jar for months usually sulks for weeks after potting.
In sphagnum moss or perlite: the better method for a big cutting. Bury the node in damp moss in a clear tub with the lid ajar, somewhere warm and bright, and pot it on when there are several inches of root. Roots grown this way move into mix without missing a beat.
Air layering avoids all risk: wrap a node on the growing plant in damp moss inside a plastic sleeve, wait for roots to fill it, then cut below the node and pot the already-rooted section.
Wear gloves for all of it — monstera stems weep freely when cut — keep cuttings and rooting jars off kitchen counters and away from pets, and if you live somewhere frost-free put spent material in the trash rather than the compost or the green-waste bin.
Growing across climates
A houseplant in every US climate. Outdoors it survives only in zone 10b and warmer - which is exactly where it is listed as invasive in Hawaii and has naturalized in south Florida.
Indoors, climate is barely a factor: monstera wants what a heated house already provides — 65 to 85°F, out of drafts, away from freezing glass in January and away from radiators. It sulks below about 55°F and frost kills it outright. Dry winter air produces brown leaf edges without threatening the plant; grouping plants, a pebble tray or a humidifier all help, and a monstera in a bright bathroom is a happy one.
Outdoors it is hardy only in zone 10b and warmer — the southern tip of Florida, Hawaii, coastal Puerto Rico, the warmest edge of the Gulf. And that is precisely where it should not be planted out. Escaped monstera does at scale what it does on a moss pole: it climbs. Given a live oak or a palm it goes up thirty or forty feet, its leaves enlarging as it rises, and it smothers the canopy it climbs. It is listed as an invasive plant in Hawaii and has naturalized in south Florida, where it also fruits and spreads by seed.
The practical rule for warm-climate gardeners: keep it in a pot, keep the pot off the ground where a stem can root into a bed, and put trimmings and old mix in the trash. A single node in warm damp ground is a new plant, and a monstera on a tree is very hard to get back off it.
Summering outdoors anywhere else is fine and does the plant good: deep shade only, once nights stay above 60°F, moved out gradually and brought back inside in early autumn well before the first cold night. Check the leaf undersides for thrips and mealybugs before it rejoins the other plants.
History
A Central American rainforest climber that Victorian collectors grew for its fruit, mid-century designers made a symbol, and the 2010s turned briefly into a commodity.
Monstera comes from the rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America, where it germinates on the forest floor, grows toward the darkest thing it can see until it finds a trunk, and then climbs into the light. That reversal — growing away from light to find a support, then up it — is a real and well-documented behaviour, and it is why a monstera in a room will lean toward a dark corner before it heads for a window.
The name is a nineteenth-century botanist's joke about the leaves — monstrous, full of holes — while deliciosa records the fruit, which is what Victorian collectors were mainly interested in. It was grown in European hothouses in the 1800s partly as a curiosity fruit crop, and small commercial plantings still exist in Central America, Florida, Madeira and Australia.
Its real fame came in the mid-twentieth century, when the outline of that leaf became shorthand for tropical modernism: in Matisse's cut-outs, in mid-century wallpaper and textiles, on the walls of every California bungalow with a corner to fill. And it came again around 2018 to 2022, when variegated forms turned into a speculative market and single rooted cuttings of Monstera 'Albo Variegata' changed hands for thousands of dollars before tissue-culture production of 'Thai Constellation' brought prices back to earth.
One naming muddle is worth clearing up, because it is everywhere. Garden centres have sold this plant as split-leaf philodendron for decades. It is not a philodendron. It is in the same family, it needs the same care and carries the same crystals, so nothing about the confusion is dangerous — but if you are searching for information, search Monstera deliciosa.
