Mayapple
Mayapple is grown as an ornamental groundcover, not a food. ALL parts - leaves, stems, roots, rhizome, seeds, and the green unripe fruit - are toxic (they contain podophyllotoxin) and can cause severe digestive upset if eaten. The ONLY edible part is the fully ripe, soft, yellow fruit with the seeds removed. Because the ripe-versus-toxic line is easy to misjudge and the fruit tempts children, treat the whole plant as toxic and admire the fruit rather than eat it unless you are certain.
Overview
The umbrella-leaved carpet of eastern woodlands, with a single white flower hidden beneath the leaves and one famously tricky fruit - toxic in every part except the fully ripe pulp.
Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) is one of the most distinctive groundcovers of the eastern forest: whole colonies of umbrella-like leaves, deeply lobed and held flat on single stalks, that carpet the spring woodland floor.
