Manzanita
The ripe berries are edible - dry, mealy and mostly seed, traditionally soaked in cold water for a tart cider rather than eaten by the handful. Do not boil them: heat draws out tannins and turns the drink harsh. The leaves are another matter, rich in arbutin, which the body converts to hydroquinone, and the uva-ursi leaf tea of the herbal trade is a short-course medicine with real dosing limits - not a casual brew, not for children or in pregnancy, and not something to try from your own shrub.
Overview
The sculptural backbone of the California native garden: smooth mahogany-red bark that peels itself every summer, urn-shaped flowers in the dead of winter that feed hummingbirds, small edible berries - and an absolute intolerance of summer water.
Manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.) is grown first of all for its bark. Every summer the old skin curls off in papery strips to reveal wood the colour of polished mahogany, twisting through a framework of muscular branches that gets more sculptural with every decade. Set against small leathery evergreen leaves held edge-on to the sun, it is the most architectural shrub in the western native palette, and the reason old specimens are treated as garden furniture rather than planting.
Around sixty species grow from British Columbia to Baja California, most of them Californian, and they range from six-inch groundcovering mats to twenty-foot small trees. This is a genus-level guide — size, hardiness and garden tolerance vary so widely between species that the varieties below carry most of the practical decision.
What it gives back is out of season, which is exactly what makes it valuable. Manzanita flowers in midwinter, hanging small white and pink urns at a time when almost nothing else does, and those flowers are a mainstay for Anna's hummingbirds and the earliest bumble bee queens. By late summer they have become the little apples that give the plant its Spanish name — dry, mealy, tart, edible, and eaten by everything from bears to band-tailed pigeons. The genus name Arctostaphylos means bear grapes.
There is one rule, and it is not negotiable: no summer water. An established manzanita in an irrigated bed is a dead manzanita. Plant it where the hose does not reach.

Root Rot High
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.
The main way garden manzanitas die, and the trigger is summer irrigation rather than winter rain. Warm damp soil wakes up Phytophthora, so a plant in a lawn, a drip-watered bed, or downhill of either is on borrowed time. Water every two or three weeks through the first dry summer, less the second, then never again. Keep the crown proud of the soil, mulch with gravel not compost, plant on a mound in clay, and choose Howard McMinn or Emerald Carpet where conditions are imperfect.
Manzanita Branch Dieback Medium
Canker fungi - Botryosphaeria and relatives - colonize stressed manzanita wood and kill it limb by limb. One branch browns off and dies while the rest of the shrub looks perfectly healthy, then another follows a year later. The fungi are nearly always present in the environment; what lets them in is stress, and on manzanita that means summer irrigation, a pruning wound made in hot weather, bark suddenly exposed to full sun, or roots struggling in heavy wet ground. After root rot, this is the second most common way a garden manzanita is lost.
Watch for: One entire branch carrying brown, dry, still-attached leaves while its neighbours are green - the classic flag. Sunken, dark, cracked bark where the dying limb meets a larger branch, sometimes with weeping or resin. Wood that is stained brown or streaked when you cut into it. Damage concentrated where the plant was pruned in summer, where irrigation reaches, or on limbs newly exposed to hot sun after something beside them was removed.
Prevent: Keep the plant unstressed and dry in summer, which is most of the answer. Prune only in the cool weeks after bloom in late spring, never in summer heat, and make small clean cuts rather than large ones, sterilizing the blade between limbs. Do not open the canopy so far that interior bark is suddenly sunburnt. Keep irrigation out of the root zone, and mulch with gravel or the shrub's own leaf litter rather than moisture-holding compost piled against the trunk.
Treat: Cut the affected limb out well back into clean, unstained wood, sterilizing the blade between every cut, and bin the prunings rather than composting them. Do it in dry, cool weather. There is no spray worth using. If limbs keep dying year after year, the real cause is the water or the soil, so go looking for the irrigation line before you go looking for a fungicide.
Losing a limb is permanent on a tree-form manzanita: the sculptural branch structure is the whole point of the plant and it will not regrow. That is the practical argument for the small, careful, once-a-year late-spring cut rather than an occasional heavy tidy-up.
Deer (browse resistance) Low
Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.
Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.
Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.
Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.
Manzanita is one of the genuinely low-preference natives: the leathery, resinous leaves make poor browse and established plants are usually passed over even under heavy pressure. Young plants still get sampled, and a rubbed trunk on a tree-form manzanita is a real loss, since the bark is the whole point and will not heal back. Cage a new plant for its first two or three years. Do not follow the general advice to feed and water a browsed plant here - that is the one thing manzanita cannot take.
Manzanita Leaf Gall Aphid Low
A small native aphid (Tamalia coweni) that feeds on expanding manzanita leaves in spring and causes them to fold, thicken and swell into puckered red or rose-pink pouches. It looks dramatic and is very nearly harmless - the plant carries on growing, galled leaves are shed in their own time, and the aphid is a native part of the manzanita community rather than an invader.
Watch for: New spring leaves folded lengthwise into thick, blistered, red or pink pouches, usually on the outermost new growth. Open one and you will find tiny pale aphids inside. Older galls dry brown and eventually drop.
Prevent: None needed, and none worth attempting. Growing the shrub lean and unirrigated means less soft new growth to colonize, which is the right approach for other reasons anyway.
Treat: Do nothing. If the appearance bothers you, pick the galled leaves off by hand and bin them. Sprays cannot reach aphids sealed inside a closed gall, and would only remove the predators that keep the population in check.
One of the most frequently asked questions about a garden manzanita, and the answer is always to leave it alone. It does not damage the shrub, does not spread to unrelated plants, and is worst on plants pushing soft growth - which is a hint to stop feeding and watering.

Grow
Full sun, sharp drainage, lean unamended acidic soil and no fertilizer. Plant a small one in autumn, keep the crown high, mulch with gravel or its own litter, and site it well outside every irrigated area.
Manzanita wants full sun (a little afternoon shade inland is fine), very sharp drainage, and lean, slightly acidic, unimproved soil. Do not dig compost or manure into the hole and do not fertilize. Like other members of the heath family it depends on mycorrhizal fungi rather than soil richness, which is why a nursery-grown container plant, with its fungal partners already in the root ball, establishes so much better than bare-root stock or amended planting holes.
Plant small and plant in autumn. A one-gallon plant will usually pass a five-gallon within a few years, and an autumn planting roots through the wet months and faces summer prepared. Set the crown slightly proud of the soil surface — a buried stem base is a common and avoidable killer — and firm it in without stamping. Mulch with gravel, decomposed granite, or the shrub's own fallen leaves, pulled back from the stem. Skip the wood chips and compost.
Then think hard about where the water goes. Manzanita is stricter than almost any other garden plant on this point: it is adapted to soil that bakes dry all summer, and warm damp soil around its roots invites Phytophthora. Keep it out of lawns and irrigated beds, out of the downhill path of either, and off flat heavy clay unless you can raise it on a mound. Water it every two or three weeks through its first dry summer, less in its second, and then never again.
Care

An established manzanita asks for nothing, and most of the skill is in withholding. No summer water. No fertilizer. No compost mulch. The bark peels itself — do not scrub, sand, or oil it, whatever you read; the finish it makes on its own is better and the wood underneath is easily damaged.
Pruning is the one active job and it has a narrow window. Cut in late spring, after bloom and before the heat, never in summer, because summer wounds are how branch-dieback fungi get in. Take out dead wood, and on a shrub you are training into a small tree, remove a few slim interior branches each year to open up the trunks. Keep the cuts small and clean and sterilize the blade between limbs. Most manzanitas do not resprout from bare old wood, so a hard renovation cut leaves a hole that never closes, and on a plant whose entire value is its branch structure that is a permanent loss. Prune a little, once a year, from the beginning.
Two habits round it out. Do not open the canopy so far that interior bark is suddenly exposed to full sun, which sunburns it and invites dieback. And in wildfire country, treat manzanita as the resinous chaparral it is: keep it out of the first five feet around a building, clear dead twiggy litter from inside the shrub, and follow your local defensible-space guidance.

Manzanita berries ripen through late summer from green to red-brown or deep red, and they are nothing like a garden fruit. They are dry, mealy, and mostly seed, with a thin layer of tart, faintly apple-flavoured flesh over stones hard enough to break a tooth. Nobody eats them by the handful. What they are good for is manzanita cider: crush a couple of cups of ripe berries, cover them with cold water, let them steep for a few hours or overnight, then strain through cloth. The result is pale, tart, and refreshing, and it is one of the genuinely distinctive flavours of California.
The one rule that matters is do not use heat. Boiling or even hot steeping extracts the tannins from the skins and seeds and turns a pleasant drink harsh and astringent, which is why the traditional preparation is a cold soak. Strain out and discard the seeds rather than crushing them. The strained juice can be sweetened, or set with added pectin into a delicate jelly, and some traditions dried and ground the whole berries into a meal.
Take a handful and leave the rest. Arctostaphylos means bear grapes, and bears, coyotes, foxes, band-tailed pigeons and many smaller birds all depend on the crop. On public land, remember that collecting plant material generally needs permission — pick from your own shrub.
Storage
Fresh cider keeps only a few days refrigerated; the berries themselves dry hard and store for months, so the usual approach is to dry the crop and steep it a batch at a time through the winter.
Fresh manzanita cider is a short-lived thing. Strained and refrigerated it keeps for perhaps three or four days before it begins to ferment, so make it in small batches. It freezes reasonably well, and setting the strained juice into a jelly with added pectin and sugar is the traditional way to keep a good crop, since the fruit itself is low in pectin.
The berries store far better than the juice. They are already dry when ripe, and spread on a tray in a warm airy place they harden further and will keep for months in a jar in a cool cupboard, or longer in the freezer. That is the practical answer for most people: gather when the crop is ready, dry it, and cold-steep a cup or two at a time through the winter. For seed, note that manzanita germination is slow and fire-cued, so store dried seed cool and dry and read the propagation notes before you sow.
Propagation & seed saving
Cuttings are the practical route and the only way to keep a named selection, though manzanita roots slowly and grudgingly; seed needs fire-mimicking heat or acid scarification and months of cold, and is a project rather than a method.
Cuttings are how manzanitas are propagated in the trade, and they test your patience. Take semi-hardwood cuttings of the current season's growth in late summer or autumn, wound the base lightly, use a strong rooting hormone, and set them in a gritty, very free-draining mix with bottom heat and high humidity but almost no wetness at the base. Rooting can take several months and success rates vary enormously between species; the groundcover kinds are far easier than the tree-forms. Pot rooted cuttings into a lean mix and grow them hard and dry.
Seed is a lesson in chaparral fire ecology rather than a practical garden method. Manzanita seed is locked inside a hard stony nutlet and, in the wild, germinates in quantity only after a fire has cracked it with heat and charred organic matter has leached through the soil. Gardeners copy this with scarification — a brief hot-water or sulfuric-acid treatment — followed by two to three months of cold, moist stratification, and even then germination is slow, erratic, and often spread over more than one year. Seedlings vary from the parent, which is fine for a wild planting and no use for a named cultivar.
One practical note in the other direction: some manzanita species form a woody basal burl and resprout after fire, while others are killed outright and rely entirely on that buried seed bank. Which group a species belongs to tells you whether it can take being cut back at all, and the answer for most garden selections is no.
Nutrition
The berries are a tart, tannic, low-yield traditional food rather than a nutrition crop; the plant's real weight is ecological - midwinter nectar for hummingbirds and early bees, and a berry crop that a long list of birds and mammals depends on.
Nobody grows manzanita for calories. The berries are mostly seed, and the thin flesh is tart and tannic — a pleasant traditional drink and a distinctive jelly, but a very small food yield from a very large shrub. What tannins and the deep red skins do supply is astringency and polyphenols, in the same family of compounds as other dark wild fruit.
The ecology is where this plant earns its place, and its value is largely a matter of timing. Manzanita blooms in December to March, when almost nothing else offers nectar, which makes it a keystone winter resource: Anna's hummingbirds hold territories on flowering shrubs through the coldest months, and the first bumble bee queens of the year work it on mild afternoons. Then the crop arrives in late summer, the leanest stretch of the dry season, and black bears, coyotes, foxes, band-tailed pigeons, quail and a long list of smaller birds all feed on it. Two hungry gaps in the year, both covered by one shrub.
Below ground it does something quieter. As a member of the heath family it lives in partnership with mycorrhizal fungi, and dense manzanita stands hold thin chaparral soils against winter rain on slopes where little else will root.

Educational information, not medical advice. The leaves of manzanita, and above all of bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), are the uva-ursi of the herbal trade. They contain arbutin, a compound the body converts to hydroquinone, which is excreted in the urine and is the basis of the plant's long reputation as a urinary-tract remedy. Indigenous peoples across the West and, separately, herbalists across northern Europe used the leaves for urinary complaints, and the dried leaf remains a listed traditional herbal medicine in several European regulatory systems. Manzanita leaves were also chewed or used as a wash for sores, and the leaf was a component of some smoking mixtures — which is where the name kinnikinnick comes from.
The honest caveats matter more than the tradition here. Hydroquinone is the reason it works and the reason it is limited: the standard traditional use is a short course of a few days, several times a year at most, and prolonged or high-dose use carries liver and other toxicity concerns. It is not recommended in pregnancy or while nursing, not for children, and not for anyone with kidney disease. Urinary symptoms can also signal an infection that needs actual treatment, and self-treating a kidney infection is dangerous.
So: this is a real medicinal plant with a real record, and it is not a tea to brew from your own shrub for the pleasure of it. The berries are the part of this plant to enjoy. Leave the leaves to a qualified practitioner and a proper diagnosis.
History
A cornerstone California plant: little apples for cider and meal, leaves for smoking mixtures and medicine, hard wood for tools - and a fire-shaped chaparral shrub that became the signature of the modern native-garden movement.
Manzanita has been central to life in California for thousands of years. Its name is Spanish for little apple, given by colonists for the small round fruit, but Indigenous peoples across the state had used it long before: the berries crushed and cold-steeped for cider or dried and ground into meal, the leaves used medicinally and in the tobacco mixtures known by the Algonquian word kinnikinnick, and the exceptionally hard, dense wood worked into tools and burned as a slow, hot fuel. Bears, whose appetite for the fruit gave the genus its name Arctostaphylos — bear grapes — competed for the same crop.
The plant is shaped by fire. Chaparral burns on a cycle of decades, and manzanitas answered in two different ways: some species form a woody basal burl and resprout from the base after a burn, while others are killed outright and regenerate entirely from seed that has waited in the soil, sometimes for many years, for the heat and charred leachate that break its dormancy. Indigenous burning practices worked with that cycle for millennia.
In gardens, manzanita arrived late and then arrived completely. Twentieth-century California horticulturists selected the tough garden forms — Howard McMinn, Dr. Hurd, Louis Edmunds, Emerald Carpet — that made a difficult wild genus plantable, and by the time the drought years of the 2010s pushed water-thrifty native planting into the mainstream, manzanita's peeling red trunks had become the visual signature of the whole movement.
Troubleshooting
A sudden collapse is nearly always summer water; a single dead limb is nearly always summer pruning or stress. Red folded leaves are a harmless aphid, peeling bark is the plant working properly, and a hard pruning cut is permanent.
Looked fine, then wilted and died within weeks in summer: root rot from summer irrigation — the classic manzanita death. Look for a sprinkler, a drip line, a lawn uphill, or a low spot collecting runoff before you look for anything else. Wilting although the soil is damp: the same thing. Do not water it more; that finishes it. One whole branch browned off while the rest looks healthy: branch dieback fungus, usually let in by a summer pruning wound, sunburnt bark, or a stressed root system. Cut it out well back into clean wood in cool dry weather and fix the underlying cause. Bark peeling off in strips: that is the plant working exactly as intended — leave it, and never scrub or oil the trunk. New leaves folded into thick red pouches: the native leaf-gall aphid, harmless; pick them off if you dislike the look. Cut it back and it never regrew: most manzanitas do not resprout from bare old wood. Prune small amounts of live growth in late spring only, every year, from the start. Yellowing leaves with green veins: usually alkaline or waterlogged soil — manzanita wants acidic and sharply drained; a groundcover selection or bearberry may cope better than a tree-form. Grew slowly and looks sparse: often too much shade, or too much kindness; it wants full sun and lean ground. Never flowered: young plants take a few years, and bloom is in midwinter — check in January before concluding anything.
Growing across climates
The Californian species suit dry-summer zones 7-10 and fail in humid summers; bearberry is the far hardier alternative, native across the cold northern tier and usable to about zone 2 where the soil is acidic and sandy.
Coastal and near-coastal California (zones 9-10): the heartland. Fog, mild winters and a bone-dry summer are exactly what these species evolved for, and the coastal and groundcover kinds thrive with no attention at all. Inland California and the interior West (zones 7-9): workable with the tougher selections — Howard McMinn, Dr. Hurd, Louis Edmunds — sited with morning sun, sharp drainage and shelter from reflected afternoon heat. Pacific Northwest (zones 7-8): good where drainage is genuinely sharp; the danger is a cold snap on wet roots rather than the cold itself. Southwest deserts and high desert: a few species such as pointleaf manzanita belong there, but most Californian selections do not; look for a locally native species.
The two hard limits are worth stating plainly. Most Californian manzanitas are hardy only to somewhere around 15°F, which rules them out below about zone 7. And they dislike humid summers at least as much as cold: in the Southeast and much of the East they rot however carefully you water, because the problem is warm damp soil rather than the hose.
If you garden in a cold or humid climate and want this genus, grow bearberry (A. uva-ursi, kinnikinnick). It is the same genus doing the same job — evergreen mat, winter-to-spring urn flowers, red berries, thin acid soil — but it circles the northern hemisphere, is native across the northern United States, and is hardy to roughly zone 2. It still insists on sharp drainage and acidic sandy ground, and it still resents being fed.
