Mango
The flesh is food; the sap, peel and leaves are not. Mango belongs to the same family as poison ivy and cashew, and its sap carries urushiol relatives that cause an itchy, blistering rash in sensitive people - often around the mouth after eating an unpeeled fruit. Wear gloves to prune and pick, snap fruit with a short stem stub and let it drain away from the fruit and your skin, never burn the wood or leaves, and have someone else peel it if poison ivy affects you.
Overview
The most-eaten fruit on earth, and a genuinely easy backyard tree in zones 10-11 - if you understand two things: it needs a dry, cool winter rest to flower, and its sap is in the poison ivy family. Dwarf condo varieties bring it within reach of pots and small yards.
Mango is the most widely eaten fruit in the world, and in the small band of the United States that can grow it — south Florida, Hawaii, the warmest edges of southern California and south Texas — it is one of the most rewarding trees you can plant. A grafted tree fruits in three to five years, needs no pollinator, tolerates poor sandy and limestone soil, and once established is drought-tolerant. A mature tree can hand you hundreds of fruit in a season, in flavors — coconut, citrus, spice, resin — that no supermarket variety carries.
Two things decide whether it works for you. The first is the winter rest: mango flowers in response to a few cool, dry weeks, so a tree kept watered by a lawn sprinkler all winter grows beautifully and never blooms, and a tree that blooms into a rainy, foggy spring loses its panicles to anthracnose. Warm-and-dry at bloom is the whole game, which is why California mangoes crop more reliably than Florida ones even though Florida grows better trees.
The second is the sap. Mango is in the Anacardiaceae, the family of poison ivy, cashew, and pistachio, and the sap, peel, and leaves carry urushiol-relative compounds. Most people eat mango happily for a lifetime; people who react badly to poison ivy can get an itchy, blistering rash from handling the fruit or a swollen mouth from eating an unpeeled one. It is a manageable hazard — gloves, peeling, and letting picked fruit drain stem-down — but it is a real one, and it surprises people.
If you have no room for a 40 ft tree, the condo mangoes (Cogshall, Ice Cream, Carrie, Pickering, Nam Doc Mai and others) are naturally small, precocious, and productive in a 20-25 gallon pot — which is how gardeners well outside the mango zone grow one and move it under cover for winter.

Fruit Flies (Caribbean, Mediterranean & Oriental) High
Tephritid fruit flies lay their eggs under the skin of ripening fruit, and the maggots feed inside it, so the first sign is usually a fruit that looks fine and is full of larvae when cut. The Caribbean fruit fly is established across peninsular Florida and the Caribbean; Mediterranean and Oriental fruit flies are established in Hawaii and turn up in California, Texas and Florida as quarantine outbreaks. They prefer fruit that is beginning to soften and color, they build up on any fallen fruit left rotting on the ground, and populations run from late spring through fall. Because several of these species are regulated pests, an infestation is not only a garden problem - moving infested fruit is how quarantines start.
Watch for: Tiny puncture or sting marks on the skin of ripening fruit, sometimes with a weeping drop or a small sunken dimple around them. Fruit that softens, browns, or collapses on one side well before it should. Small white maggots in the flesh when the fruit is cut, and fruit that falls early and rots fast. Adult flies - larger than a housefly, with patterned wings - hovering around ripening fruit and resting on foliage in the morning. Windfalls under the tree squirming with larvae, which is where the next generation comes from.
Prevent: Bag the fruit. A paper, mesh, or organza bag slipped over each fruit once it reaches golf-ball size physically excludes the females and is the only home control that reliably works. Pick fruit at color break and finish ripening it indoors rather than letting it soften on the plant, which removes the window the flies need. Clear every fallen fruit at least weekly and dispose of it by bagging, deep burial, or solarizing in a sealed bag in the sun - never in an open compost heap, which just breeds more. Keep trees pruned small enough that you can actually reach and bag the crop. Hanging traps tell you when flies are active but will not protect a crop on their own.
Treat: There is no cure for fruit already infested - bin it sealed, and never leave it lying. Protein bait sprays are the standard commercial control and are what agriculture departments use in outbreaks; in a home garden, sanitation plus bagging does most of the work. If you find a fruit fly outside its normal range, or receive a quarantine notice, report it to your state agriculture department rather than dealing with it privately: several of these species are regulated, and it is illegal to move host fruit out of a declared quarantine area, including to friends and family in another county or state.
Mango is a preferred host of the Oriental fruit fly in Hawaii and of the Caribbean fruit fly in Florida, which is exactly why mango is one of the fruits most often named in quarantine and interstate movement rules. Keeping the tree small enough to bag the fruit is the decision that makes this manageable, and it gets made years earlier at planting.
Mango Anthracnose High
The single most destructive disease of mango, caused by Colletotrichum fungi, and the reason mango crops fail in humid climates. It infects flower panicles, young fruit, leaves, and shoots whenever they are wet, so its severity is decided almost entirely by rain, fog, and dew during bloom. Blackened panicles set no fruit at all. Infection of young fruit often stays latent and invisible until the fruit ripens, which is why apparently perfect mangoes develop spreading black rot on the counter days after picking. Florida and the Gulf lose crops to it in wet springs; dry-spring California sees far less.
Watch for: Flower panicles turning black from the tips inward during or after wet weather, then shrivelling without setting fruit. Small dark spots on young leaves that enlarge into angular black lesions, and leaves that tear where the dead tissue falls out. Black, sunken, spreading spots on ripening or ripened fruit, often starting at the stem end and often appearing only after picking. Blackened shoot tips and dieback. Tear-stain streaks of black running down the fruit where spores wash from the stem.
Prevent: Choose tolerant varieties in humid climates - Carrie, Keitt, and Glenn are the usual recommendations. Prune every year immediately after harvest to open the canopy so flowers and foliage dry fast, and site the tree in full sun and moving air. Never water overhead, and clear fallen leaves, mummified fruit, and dead twigs, which is where the fungus overwinters. Where rain at bloom is normal, protective fungicide sprays labeled for mango - copper is the usual home option - applied from bud break through fruit set are the standard practice, and they must go on before infection rather than after.
Treat: Nothing recovers a blackened panicle or cures an infected fruit; this is a disease you prevent. Cut out infected shoots into clean wood, bin infected and mummified fruit rather than composting it, and get the canopy open. On the fruit side, picking at proper maturity and refrigerating promptly slows the latent infections that show up after harvest, and a brief hot-water dip is the commercial post-harvest treatment. Plan the following season around protective sprays at bloom if your springs are wet.
This is why a Florida mango tree can look magnificent and produce nothing: a wet January and February blackens the bloom before the crop ever exists. It is also the reason mangoes bought at a market rot so suddenly - the infection was already in the fruit when it was picked.
Birds & Wildlife Medium
Birds find ripening fruit and seed before you do. Robins, waxwings, starlings, catbirds, jays, sparrows, finches, blackbirds, and doves all work a garden, and the pressure arrives in a narrow window - the last days before harvest, when sugar rises, color changes, and the crop softens or the grain hardens. A flock can strip a small planting in a day or two, and birds that only peck rather than take whole fruit still leave wounds that rot or draw wasps. Squirrels, chipmunks, and other wildlife usually turn up on the same crop at the same time. This is competition rather than disease: the birds are not harming the plant, and a big tree or a heavy-cropping bush often has enough for everyone - but on a small planting it can be the difference between a harvest and none.
Watch for: Fruit disappearing from the outermost, most exposed parts of the plant first, and from the top of a tree where you cannot reach anyway. Single neat pecks and gouges in ripening fruit, with several fruits sampled rather than one eaten through - the classic sign that it was birds rather than an animal. Heads of grain or seed going visibly lighter and emptier as they ripen, with hulls and chaff scattered underneath. Freshly sown seed vanishing off the surface of a bed before it germinates. Bird traffic in and out of the plant picking up as the crop colors, and birds waiting on nearby wires and branches. Wasps arriving at the pecked and split fruit shortly afterward.
Prevent: Net, and net early. Bird netting draped over a frame or hoops so it stands off the fruit, with the edges closed at ground level, is the only thing that reliably works at harvest scale - and it has to go on before the crop starts to color, because once birds have found the food they are far harder to displace. Keep fruit trees small enough that netting them is actually feasible; that decision gets made years earlier, at planting. Bags of mesh, organza, or paper slipped over individual heads, clusters, or prize fruit protect a small crop without netting the whole plant. Then shorten the exposure: pick promptly and completely rather than leaving ripe fruit hanging as a lure, clear split and dropped fruit that draws birds and wasps alike, and where a crop can finish off the plant, harvest a little early and ripen or dry it under cover. Rake in or cover broadcast seed so it is not lying in plain view.
Treat: There is no treatment once a crop is being taken - only protection and timing, so the answer is to get netting on and to pick what is ready. Reflective tape, flash ribbon, spinners, and decoy predators do work, but only for a few days at a time: birds habituate fast, so move and rotate them and never rely on them as the main defense for a crop you care about. Cut and gather grain or seed heads a little early, at firm dough, and finish drying them under cover instead of leaving them standing for the flocks. Plant a little extra, or a decoy crop the birds prefer, and accept sharing anything that crops heavily. On a wild or foraged patch, fruit going to birds and small mammals is the point of the plant rather than a problem to solve.
On mango the mammals do more damage than the birds: squirrels, rats, and raccoons take fruit just before it is mature, working at night and from above. Since mango is picked firm rather than soft, the best defense is simply to harvest at maturity rather than waiting - plus bagging individual fruit on a tree small enough to reach.
Powdery Mildew Medium
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
On mango this is a bloom-season disease rather than a leaf-season one: it coats the flower panicles and young fruit in cool, dry nights with humid mornings, and infected panicles and fruitlets simply drop. That makes it the main flowering disease in dry-winter California, where anthracnose is much less of a problem, and it is timed and treated with the same bloom sprays.
Scale & Sooty Mold Medium
Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.
Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.
Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.
Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.
Mango carries several scales, and the sign most gardeners notice first is black sooty mold coating the leaves and fruit under an ant highway. The annual post-harvest pruning a mango needs anyway removes most of a buildup; a horticultural oil spray afterward reaches what is left.
Mango Sap Burn & Contact Dermatitis Medium
When a mango is pulled from the tree the stem spurts a caustic latex sap under pressure. On the fruit it burns dark, hard, streaky blemishes into the skin within minutes - the defect packers call sap burn. On people it does something more serious: mango is in the poison ivy and cashew family, and the sap, peel, and leaves carry urushiol-related compounds that cause a delayed itchy, blistering contact dermatitis in sensitized individuals, typically appearing a day or two after handling and lasting one to two weeks. Reactions around the mouth after eating an unpeeled mango are common, and people who react to poison ivy are the most likely to react here.
Watch for: Dark brown or black streaks and hardened patches burned into the skin of fruit shortly after picking, usually running from the stem end. On skin: itching, redness, small blisters, and swelling appearing 12-72 hours after handling fruit or pruning, most often on the hands, forearms, and around the lips and eyes. Swelling of the lips and mouth after eating unpeeled fruit. A rash that keeps recurring each harvest season is the sign of established sensitization rather than an unlucky accident.
Prevent: Wear gloves and long sleeves to prune and to harvest, and keep the sap off your face. Cut or snap fruit leaving a short stem stub rather than pulling it off flush, then stand picked fruit stem-down for several minutes so the sap drains away from the skin before it burns. Wash fruit, hands, and tools afterward. Always peel a mango before eating it, and have someone else peel it if you are sensitive to poison ivy. Never burn mango prunings, wood, or leaves - inhaling the smoke can cause a severe reaction affecting the airway. People with cashew or pistachio allergy should be cautious, since the family relationship makes cross-reaction possible.
Treat: Sap burn on fruit is cosmetic and does not affect the flesh underneath - cut the blemish away and eat the fruit. For a skin reaction, wash the area promptly with soap and water or an alcohol wipe, since removing the residue early limits the rash; then treat as you would poison ivy, with cool compresses, calamine, and an over-the-counter hydrocortisone or oral antihistamine. See a doctor for a widespread rash, for facial or eye involvement, for any swelling of the lips, mouth, or throat, or for any difficulty breathing, which is an emergency. Anyone with a serious reaction should discuss mango, cashew, and pistachio with an allergist rather than experimenting.
Both halves of this hazard are entirely manageable with the same harvesting habit - gloves, a stem stub, and draining the fruit stem-down. The part people do not expect is the family relationship to poison ivy, and the fact that a reaction shows up a day or two later, long after they have forgotten handling the fruit.

The mango in almost every American supermarket, and a variety worth understanding rather than planting: it was selected for its thick skin, long shelf life, disease tolerance, and brilliant red color, not for flavor, and its flesh is noticeably fibrous. If your only experience of mango is disappointing, this is probably why. Tough and productive, but nearly every other variety here tastes better.

A large, vigorous Florida seedling that has become a favorite in southern California: very large elongated fruit with sweet, fiberless, richly flavored flesh. The tree grows fast and big, so it needs annual pruning to stay pickable, but the eating quality is among the best of the full-size varieties.
Grow
Buy a grafted tree, not a seedling. Full sun, sharp drainage, and as much heat as possible. Decide the height at planting and keep it at 10-15 ft. Keep winter irrigation OFF - the dry cool rest is what makes it flower.
Buy a grafted tree of a named variety. Mango seedlings take five to eight years to bear and, for most Indian-type varieties, are genetic lotteries. (The Southeast Asian types are the interesting exception — they are polyembryonic, so most of their seedlings are clones of the mother tree. That is how varieties like Nam Doc Mai travel as seeds.) A grafted tree fruits in three to five years and is what you actually chose.
Give it full sun and sharp drainage. Mango tolerates poor sand, limestone, and mild drought once established, but it will not tolerate wet feet — plant on a mound in heavy soil, and never in a low spot. Space full-size trees 25-40 ft from buildings and each other, or 10-15 ft if you are committed to keeping them small. Site it away from patios, pools, and driveways: ripe mangoes fall, and they fall hard and messily.
Decide the height in year one. Head a young tree at 3-4 ft to force low scaffolds, and then prune every year after harvest to hold it at 10-15 ft. This is the single most consequential decision in mango growing: everything — picking, bagging against fruit flies, spraying at bloom, netting, frost cloth — is possible on a small tree and impossible on a 40 ft one.
Keep winter water off. From mid-autumn until fruit sets, a mango wants to be dry and cool. Irrigation, a wet lawn, or a rainy winter keeps it growing instead of flowering. In south Florida the practical form of this rule is: turn the sprinkler zone off, and hope for a dry January.
One thing to know before planting in Florida or Hawaii: seeds sprout readily under a fruiting tree and mango has naturalized in disturbed ground in both places. Pull volunteers while they are small, and clear windfalls, which also cuts fruit fly pressure.
Care
Prune hard right after harvest and never later. Feed lightly with micronutrients on alkaline soil. Water steadily from fruit set to harvest and not at all through the winter rest. Expect alternate bearing, and expect anthracnose in any wet bloom season.
Prune immediately after harvest. That window is the only one that works: the tree pushes new growth, hardens it off, and flowers on it the following winter. Prune in autumn or winter and you cut off the crop. Take out crossing and dead wood, open the canopy, and cut the tree back to the height you have decided to keep it — a mango tolerates hard pruning remarkably well, and even a badly overgrown tree can be brought back over two or three seasons.
Feed lightly and often through the warm season, easing off as autumn approaches so you are not pushing soft growth into the rest period. On the alkaline sand and limestone of south Florida, micronutrients are not optional — iron, manganese, and zinc deficiency shows as yellowing between green leaf veins and is routine there.
Water on the mango's own schedule: steadily from fruit set through harvest, sparingly after harvest, and not at all during the cool dry rest that triggers flowering. This inverted rhythm is the thing most transplanted temperate-climate gardeners get wrong.
Expect alternate bearing. Most varieties crop heavily one year and lightly the next, and thinning a heavy crop moderates the swing. And expect anthracnose to be the recurring disease: in a wet bloom season it blackens the flower panicles and no amount of good culture afterward recovers the crop. Where bloom-season rain is normal, protective copper sprays labeled for the crop from bud break through fruit set are the standard practice.
Harvest
Pick mature and firm, never soft - the shoulders fill and rise above the stem, the shape rounds out, and the stem end smells faintly fruity. Color means nothing on green varieties. Leave a stem stub, drain the sap stem-down, wear gloves, and ripen indoors for 3-8 days.
Mango is harvested mature but firm and ripened off the tree. Waiting for softness on the branch means losing the fruit to birds, squirrels, fruit flies, and gravity. The reliable maturity signs are the shoulders of the fruit filling out and rising above the point where the stem attaches, a fuller and rounder overall shape, heaviness for its size, and a faint sweet smell at the stem end. Color is not a sign on many of the best home varieties — Keitt and Carrie are dead ripe while still fully green, and gardeners throw away perfect fruit waiting for a blush that is never coming. When in doubt, pick one, leave it on the counter, and see whether it softens evenly over three to eight days.
Harvest technique matters here more than on any other fruit tree, because of the sap. Snapping the stem sends a spurt of caustic sap out under pressure. It burns dark streaks into the skin of the fruit — the blemish commercial packers call sap burn — and it causes rashes on people. So: wear gloves and long sleeves, cut or snap the stem leaving a short stub of an inch or so rather than pulling the fruit off flush, and stand the picked fruit stem-down on a rack or in a crate for a few minutes so the sap drains away from the skin. Rinse the fruit afterward, and wash your hands and tools before touching your face.
Fruit ripens over several weeks rather than all at once, so plan on picking every few days. A picked mango ripens on the counter in three to eight days and tells you it is ready by softening slightly at the stem end and smelling like a mango across the room.
Storage
Ripen on the counter for 3-8 days, then refrigerate the ripe fruit up to about five days. Never refrigerate an unripe mango - below about 50 degrees F it suffers chilling injury and never ripens properly. A glut becomes frozen chunks, chutney, or dried slices.
Mature-but-firm mangoes ripen at room temperature in three to eight days, faster in a paper bag with a banana or apple. Once ripe, they hold about five days refrigerated. The rule that catches people out is the other direction: do not refrigerate an unripe mango. Below roughly 50°F unripe fruit suffers chilling injury — grayish pitted skin, patchy uneven softening, flat flavor — and it never ripens properly afterward.
A productive tree drops more fruit in a fortnight than anyone can eat, so preserving is part of growing mangoes. Freeze peeled chunks or puree in bags — the most useful method by a distance, and frozen mango makes excellent smoothies, sorbet, and lassi all year. Dry slices in a dehydrator for chewy strips. Cook the surplus into chutney, jam, or hot sauce, all of which can be canned as high-acid preserves with added acid to a tested recipe. And use the green fruit: unripe mango is an ingredient in its own right for salads, pickles, and amchur powder, which turns thinning and windfalls into food instead of waste.
In the kitchen
Ripe: eaten fresh, blended into lassi and sorbet, cut into salsa and salads. Green: shredded into Thai and Vietnamese salads, pickled into achar, cooked into chutney. Two different ingredients from the same tree.
A tree-ripened mango eaten over a sink is one of the reasons people grow fruit at all, and homegrown varieties taste nothing like the fibrous shipping cultivars in most supermarkets. Beyond eating it fresh, ripe mango goes into smoothies and lassi, sorbet and ice cream, salsa with lime and chili for fish and tacos, salads with avocado and herbs, sticky rice with coconut cream, and simple purees frozen for the winter.
Green mango is a separate ingredient. Firm, sour, unripe fruit is shredded into Thai and Vietnamese salads with fish sauce, lime, chili, and peanuts; pickled into Indian achar and Filipino burong mangga; simmered with vinegar, sugar, and spice into chutney; and dried and ground into amchur, the souring powder used across North Indian cooking. This is what to do with thinnings, windfalls, and the fruit a storm knocks down early — nothing on a mango tree needs to be wasted.
One practical note: always peel a mango. The peel carries the urushiol-relative compounds that cause contact rashes, and eating unpeeled fruit is how most people discover they are sensitive. Cut cheeks either side of the flat seed, score them in a grid, and turn them inside out; the flesh clinging to the seed is the cook's share.
Nutrition
Exceptionally rich in vitamin A (as beta-carotene) and vitamin C, with useful fiber, folate, and potassium. A sweet fruit - portion it sensibly if you are watching blood sugar.
Mango is one of the better fruit sources of vitamin A — the orange flesh is dense in beta-carotene, and a single fruit covers a large share of a day's need — and it is also high in vitamin C, with useful folate, potassium, and dietary fiber, plus a range of polyphenols. Green, unripe mango is even higher in vitamin C than ripe fruit, which is part of why sour green mango preparations have such a long history in hot climates.
It is also a genuinely sweet fruit, with more sugar than most, so if you are managing blood sugar treat it as fruit rather than as a free food and portion it accordingly. Beyond that, mango is simply excellent everyday food, and homegrown fruit picked at proper maturity has more flavor and more of the carotenoids than fruit picked hard for shipping.
Traditional & historical uses
The important medical content here is the allergy, not a remedy: mango sap, peel, and leaves are in the poison ivy family and cause contact dermatitis in sensitive people. Cashew and pistachio allergy is a related concern. Never burn mango wood or leaves.

Mango is food rather than medicine, and the health story worth telling on this page is a safety one. Mango belongs to the Anacardiaceae — the family of poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, cashew, and pistachio — and its sap, peel, and leaves contain urushiol-related compounds (alkyl resorcinols such as mangiferin-associated cardol and related phenols). In people sensitized to poison ivy, contact with mango sap or peel can cause the same delayed, itchy, blistering rash a day or two later, most often on the hands, forearms, or around the mouth after eating an unpeeled fruit. The flesh itself contains very little and is safe for the overwhelming majority of people.
The practical rules are simple. Wear gloves to prune and to harvest. Peel the fruit, and have someone else peel it if you react badly to poison ivy. Let picked fruit drain stem-down so the sap runs off rather than onto the skin, and wash fruit, hands, and tools afterward. Never burn mango prunings, wood, or leaves — as with poison ivy, inhaling the smoke can cause a severe reaction affecting the airway. People with a known cashew or pistachio allergy should be cautious with mango, since the family relationship makes cross-reaction possible, and anyone who has had a serious reaction to any of them should talk to an allergist rather than experiment.
Mango leaf tea and bark preparations appear in traditional practice in South Asia and elsewhere. Given the same family chemistry, they are not something to take up casually, and there is no good evidence supporting them for a home gardener.
Troubleshooting
A healthy tree that never flowers is almost always getting winter water. Blackened flower panicles in a wet spring are anthracnose. Dark streaks burned into picked fruit are sap. Yellow leaves with green veins on Florida sand are micronutrients, not disease.
Beautiful tree, plenty of growth, no flowers. Nearly always winter irrigation — a lawn sprinkler zone, a wet mulch bed, or an unusually wet winter keeps the tree vegetative. Mango needs a cool, dry rest to bloom. Excess nitrogen and a too-young tree are the other two causes.
Flower panicles turn black and shrivel; fruit never sets. Anthracnose in a wet bloom season, the classic Florida and Gulf crop failure. Protective copper sprays labeled for the crop from bud break through fruit set, an open pruned canopy, and clearing fallen debris are the response; there is no rescue once the panicles are lost.
White powdery coating on panicles and young fruit, which then drop. Powdery mildew, which likes cool dry nights and humid mornings at bloom — a common California problem where anthracnose is not.
Dark, hard, streaky burns on the skin of picked fruit. Sap burn, caused by sap spurting onto the fruit when the stem is snapped. Pick with a stem stub and stand the fruit stem-down to drain. The flesh underneath is unaffected.
Yellow leaves with green veins, worst on new growth. Iron, manganese, and zinc deficiency on alkaline sand or limestone. Routine in south Florida, and a fertilizer problem rather than a disease.
Heavy crop one year, almost nothing the next. Alternate bearing, normal in most varieties. Thinning a heavy crop and pruning promptly after harvest evens it out somewhat.
Fruit falls in waves while still small. Normal. A mango sets far more fruit than it can carry and sheds most of it; only heavy drop after drought stress is worth acting on.
An itchy rash on hands or around the mouth after handling or eating mango. A contact reaction to the sap and peel - see the Medicine section, use gloves, and peel the fruit.
Growing across climates
Zones 10-11 only, in the ground. Zone 9b is marginal and needs a dwarf variety, a warm wall, and winter protection. Colder than that is container culture. The limits are frost and, just as importantly, rain during bloom.
Zones 10b-11 — south Florida below roughly Palm Beach, the Keys, Hawaii, and the frost-free pockets of southern California and the lower Rio Grande Valley — grow mango as an ordinary dooryard tree. Zone 10a works with occasional cold damage. Zone 9b is genuinely marginal: choose a dwarf variety, plant against a warm south-facing wall, protect every winter, and accept that some years the cold takes the bloom and some years the rain does.
Cold tolerance is age-dependent and worth being precise about: a mature tree survives brief dips into the upper 20s°F with leaf and twig burn, while a first- or second-year tree can die in the low 30s. Flowers and small fruit are killed by temperatures a few degrees above freezing, so a cold snap during bloom costs you the crop without harming the tree.
The second climate limit is rain and humidity at bloom. California's dry winters and springs make mango flowering reliable there despite less summer heat, while Florida and the Gulf produce magnificent trees whose crops are regularly destroyed by anthracnose in a wet spring. If you garden in a humid climate, choose anthracnose-tolerant varieties (Carrie, Keitt, Glenn are the usual recommendations), prune for airflow, and plan on protective sprays at bloom.
Zone 9a and colder means a pot: a condo variety in a 20-25 gallon container, outdoors from after the last frost, wintered in a bright garage, sunroom, or greenhouse and kept nearly dry through winter, which conveniently supplies exactly the rest period it needs. Expect a handful of fruit rather than a crop, and expect it to be worth it.
Propagation & seed saving
Nurseries graft, and so should you if you want a known variety. The exception is the Southeast Asian polyembryonic types, whose seedlings are clones of the mother tree - which is why those varieties travel as seeds.
Mango is propagated commercially by grafting — veneer and cleft grafts onto seedling rootstock — and that is what you buy at a nursery. Grafted trees fruit in three to five years and are true to variety. Home grafting is entirely doable if you have a rootstock seedling and access to budwood, and it is the only way to add a second variety to an existing tree, which is a common trick for extending the harvest season on a single trunk.
The interesting exception is polyembryony. Mango seeds come in two kinds. Monoembryonic seeds — most Indian-descended and Florida varieties — produce a single seedling that is a genetic cross and unlikely to resemble its parent. Polyembryonic seeds, typical of the Southeast Asian types (Nam Doc Mai, Carabao, many Thai and Filipino varieties), produce several seedlings, most of which are clones of the mother tree. That is why those varieties have travelled the tropics as seeds in luggage for centuries while Alphonso has not. If you grow a polyembryonic seed, keep the vigorous uniform seedlings and discard the odd one out, which is the sexual seedling.
Either way, a seedling mango takes five to eight years to fruit and makes a bigger tree. For a home garden in the small US mango zone, a grafted dwarf variety in a pot or a small pruned tree is the practical route.
History
Domesticated in South Asia around 4,000 years ago and central to its culture ever since, mango reached Florida in the 1800s, where a single seedling - Haden - founded the modern Florida industry and most of the varieties sold today.
Mango was domesticated in South Asia perhaps four thousand years ago and is woven through the region's religion, poetry, and cooking more thoroughly than any other fruit — mango leaves at doorways, mango motifs in textiles, and hundreds of named varieties, of which Alphonso is only the most famous export. It spread with traders and monks across Southeast Asia early, reached East Africa with Persian and Arab traders, and travelled to the Americas with Portuguese and Spanish ships, arriving in Brazil and the Caribbean in the 1700s.
Mango reached Florida in the 1800s, and the modern American mango descends largely from one tree: a seedling of the Indian variety Mulgoba planted in Coconut Grove and named Haden in 1910. Haden and its offspring — Tommy Atkins, Kent, Keitt, Glenn, Van Dyke and others — became the basis of the Florida industry and, through it, the international shipping trade, which is why the supermarket mango of the Americas is a Florida seedling rather than an Indian classic. Florida's commercial mango industry has since shrunk to almost nothing, but the varieties it produced, and the extraordinary collections kept in south Florida, are exactly what a home grower can now plant.
