Lupine
Lupine is grown as an ornamental and is TOXIC - do not eat any part. Seeds, pods and foliage carry quinolizidine alkaloids that poison people, pets and livestock, and the seeds hold the most; they look like small peas, which is exactly why children eat them. Certain western range lupines also cause 'crooked calf disease' in cattle that graze them early in pregnancy. Edible lupini beans come from de-bittered low-alkaloid crop lupines, not from garden lupines.
Overview
The hardy perennial lupines: eastern wild lupine (Lupinus perennis), a sandy-barrens native and the only food plant of the endangered Karner blue butterfly, and the tall Russell hybrids that brought the cottage-garden rainbow. Blue spikes in late spring, a deep taproot that hates being moved, lean soil and cool summers - and toxic seeds and pods throughout.
This is the perennial lupine: a plant that comes back from a crown year after year, not the fall-sown winter annual of the Texas roadsides. Two things sit under the one name. Wild lupine (Lupinus perennis) is the eastern native — a modest, tough, one-to-two-foot plant of sandy oak savanna and pine barrens from Maine to Minnesota and down the coastal plain, with fingered palmate leaves and short spikes of blue-violet pea flowers in late spring. The Russell hybrids are the other thing entirely: bred in an English cottage garden in the early twentieth century from western species, four feet tall, packed with bicolour spikes in every colour there is, and short-lived by nature.
Wild lupine has a claim no hybrid can match. It is the only plant the caterpillars of the Karner blue butterfly can eat, and that butterfly is federally endangered, its range collapsing alongside the sandy savannas the lupine grows in. Planting true L. perennis in the right region is one of the few garden acts that genuinely feeds an endangered species; planting a Russell hybrid instead does nothing for it, and in the Northeast the naturalised big-leaf lupine behind those hybrids actively displaces the native.
Both are toxic. Seeds, pods, and foliage carry quinolizidine alkaloids that poison people, pets, and livestock, and the pea-like seeds are the most dangerous part — a real hazard to children who recognise the shape. Lupines also fix their own nitrogen and want lean, sandy, sharply drained ground and cool summers. Give them that, keep the seed away from children and grazing animals, and enjoy one of the best bumblebee plants there is.

Root Rot High
Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.
Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.
Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.
Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.
Wet winter soil around the crown kills far more lupines than cold ever does. Grow them in lean, sandy, sharply drained ground, keep mulch pulled off the crown, and never water an established plant through the summer while wild lupine is dormant. In heavy ground raise the bed. Once the crown has rotted the plant is gone, though self-sown seedlings usually replace it.
Aphids Medium
Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.
Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.
Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.
Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.
The large lupine aphid is the notable species here and can mass on the flower spikes heavily enough to weaken the plant just as it is about to bloom - more of a pest on lupines than on most perennials. Check the stems as the buds rise and knock colonies off before they build.
Slugs & Snails Medium
Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.
Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.
Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.
Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.
They work on the soft new growth as it pushes from the crown in spring, which is the one moment a lupine cannot shrug damage off, and on self-sown seedlings. A wet spring in a mulched border is when it happens. Keep mulch and debris back from the crowns and check the emerging shoots after rain.
Hard-Seed Dormancy (Poor, Staggered Germination) Medium
Lupine seed is physically dormant: the coat is a hard, waxy, waterproof shell that does not let water in until weather, soil microbes, or an animal has worn it through. That is deliberate on the plant part - a single year of seed germinates across several seasons, so one bad spring cannot wipe out the population. In a garden it reads as failure. Untreated seed sown into a prepared bed often gives a scattered, disappointing stand in the first year while the rest of it sits in the soil waiting, and the gardener concludes the seed was dead or the site was wrong. Nothing is attacking the seed and this is not a disease; it is a mechanical barrier, and the fix is mechanical too.
Watch for: A sowing that produces far fewer seedlings than the seed count suggested, thin and patchy across the bed rather than failing outright. Seedlings appearing in dribs and drabs over weeks or months instead of together in one flush. Volunteers turning up a year or two later in a spot you sowed once and gave up on, which is the clearest sign the seed was dormant rather than dead. Seed that still looks plump, hard, and undamaged when you dig it back up, with no swelling and no sign of rot. A soak test settles it: leave a sample in warm water overnight and count how many have swollen. Seed that has taken up water goes visibly fatter and softer, while hard seed sits unchanged at the bottom of the glass.
Prevent: Scarify before sowing. Nick each seed through the coat with a nail file or a sharp knife, taking care not to cut into the pale interior, or shake a batch between two sheets of coarse sandpaper or in a jar lined with it. An overnight soak in warm water helps a little on its own and much more after scarifying; treat again any seed that has not swollen by morning. Buying pre-scarified seed is easier and far more even than doing it by hand, and it is usually sold pre-inoculated with the right Rhizobium bacteria as well. Sow scarified seed promptly, within a few weeks, because once the coat is breached the seed no longer stores. Sow in the season the plant actually wants, press it into firm contact with the soil at the shallow depth the packet gives, and keep the bed evenly damp until the seedlings are up, since scarified seed that dries out mid-germination is simply lost. Sow more thickly than seems necessary the first year.
Treat: There is nothing to treat once the seed is in the ground - dormant seed is not sick, and no drench or feed will wake it. Give it time first: keep the bed weeded and unturned and look again after the next season of rain, because a sowing that looked like a failure often fills in over the following year or two as the coats break down on their own. If you want the display sooner, sow again in the same window with properly scarified seed rather than assuming the site is at fault. Do not dig or hoe the bed deeply while you wait, since that buries viable seed too far down to emerge. Once a patch has established this stops being a problem at all: seed shed in place is weathered by sun, soil, and frost exactly as the plant intends, and volunteers come up on their own schedule year after year.
Wild lupine seed is every bit as hard-coated as the annual species, and sowing it untreated usually gives a thin, straggling stand. Nick or sand the seed and use a Rhizobium inoculant, or sow in fall and let winter weathering do the work. Established plants shed seed that comes up on its own, which is how a short-lived perennial keeps a patch going.
Powdery Mildew Low
Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.
Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.
Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.
Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.
The Russell hybrids mildew badly in hot, humid summers, where it is as much a symptom of the wrong climate as a disease. On tired late-summer foliage it is cosmetic and needs nothing. If it arrives every year, the answer is a cooler, airier, drier position - or wild lupine in place of a hybrid.

The best-known named Russell selection: deep marine blue with a crisp white keel, about three feet tall, and the cleanest bicolour in the group. Grown exactly like the other hybrids - lean gritty soil, full sun, cool summers, no feeding - and just as short-lived. It will not come true from its own seed, so take basal cuttings in spring if you want this exact plant to continue.

It belongs on sandy, acid, sharply drained ground - oak savanna and pine barrens country - and it is the sole plant Karner blue butterfly caterpillars can eat, which makes it the right choice anywhere inside that endangered butterfly's range. Hardy to zone 3, summer-dormant in heat, longer-lived than the hybrids, and freely self-sowing. Toxic seeds, pods, and foliage.
Grow
Full sun, lean sandy soil, sharp drainage and cool summers. Scarify the hard seed, inoculate it, and sow it where the plant is to stay - the taproot cannot be moved later. Do not fertilize, do not overwater, expect leaves the first year and flowers the second, and let it self-sow.
Perennial lupines want full sun (wild lupine takes light shade), lean, sandy or gritty soil that drains sharply, and cool summers. Wild lupine in particular is a plant of acid sandy barrens; a rich, limey, well-watered border is the wrong home for it. Start from seed sown where the plants are to grow, because a lupine sends down a deep taproot and cannot be dug up and relocated afterwards.
Deal with the seed first. The coat is hard and waterproof, so scarify it — nick each seed with a file or rub a batch between coarse sandpaper — and sow within a few weeks, since scarified seed no longer stores. A Rhizobium inoculant is worth using on ground that has never grown lupines: it is what lets the plant build the root nodules that feed it. Sow in fall and let winter weather the seed, or in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked. Either way expect a season of leaves and a taproot before the first flowers, which usually come in year two. Pot-grown plants can be set out in spring if you slide the rootball in whole and pick young stock over anything that has been standing in its pot.
After that the growing is mostly refusal. Do not fertilize — a nitrogen-fixing legume repays feeding with soft, leafy, floppy growth and a shorter life. Do not water beyond establishment, and never in summer, when wild lupine is naturally dormant and a wet crown rots. Do not dig near the plants. Keep grass and weeds off them, deadhead some spikes for a second flush if you like, and leave the rest to ripen pods, because self-sown seedlings are how a short-lived perennial keeps a patch alive for decades.
Care
Weed around them, keep water and fertilizer away, never dig near the taproot, and leave some spikes to seed so volunteers replace the plants as they age out. Aphids on the spikes and powdery mildew in humid air are the common nuisances; the standing caution is the toxic seed.
An established lupine asks for very little. Weed around it by hand while the ground is soft, since it competes poorly with grass, and stay off it with fork and hoe — the taproot runs deep and straight and will not survive being cut, which is also why lupines cannot be divided. Do not fertilize, and keep lawn feed from drifting into the bed. Do not water an established plant except in genuine drought while it is in growth, and never in summer once wild lupine has gone dormant.
Through the season: cut some spent spikes before they pod for a lighter second flush and a tidier hybrid, but always leave a share of spikes to ripen and burst. Perennial lupines are short-lived — several years for wild lupine, often only two or three for a Russell hybrid — and the planting persists through its self-sown seedlings, not through its original crowns. Leave volunteers where they appear. In winter, keep the crown dry: do not mulch over the top of it, and check after hard frosts for crowns heaved proud of the soil, pressing them back in.
Trouble is usually minor. Aphids, and the large lupine aphid especially, can mass on the flower spikes heavily enough to weaken a plant just before bloom — check the stems as buds rise and knock colonies off with a jet of water. Powdery mildew shows on tired late-summer foliage, mostly in humid air and crowded plantings, and is cosmetic. Slugs shred emerging spring growth in a wet season. The one care point with real consequences is safety: the seeds and pods are the most toxic part, they look like peas, and they should not be within reach of children, pets, or grazing animals.
Propagation & seed saving
Seed, and effectively nothing else - the taproot rules out division and makes transplanting a gamble. Scarify and inoculate before sowing, let the pods burst in place so volunteers replace short-lived plants, and take basal cuttings only if you must keep a particular named hybrid true.
Lupines are grown from seed. The deep taproot means there is nothing to divide — a lupine clump cut into pieces simply dies — and an established plant cannot be lifted and moved. So the whole business of propagation is seed handling, plus one specialist technique for named hybrids.
Seed. The coat is impermeable, so scarify it: nick each seed with a file or knife without cutting into the pale interior, or rub a batch between two sheets of coarse sandpaper. An overnight soak afterwards shows you how you did — seed that has taken up water swells visibly, and anything still hard needs treating again. Sow promptly, use a Rhizobium inoculant on ground with no lupine history, and sow where the plants will stay. Fall sowing lets winter finish the weathering for you; spring sowing works as soon as the ground is workable.
Self-sowing is the real propagation method. Left alone, ripe pods dry, twist, and fling seed a few feet, and the volunteers that come up are what carry a planting past the lifespan of its founding plants. Collect seed only if you want it elsewhere: take brown pods just before they split, dry them in a paper bag so they can burst safely, store cool and dry, and label it as toxic and keep it well away from the kitchen. Seedlings of the Russell hybrids will not come true — they revert toward blue and purple over a generation or two — so if you want a specific named hybrid to stay itself, take basal cuttings in spring: a shoot sliced off with a sliver of crown, rooted in gritty compost in a shaded frame. Wild lupine needs no such trouble; grow it from seed and let it seed itself.
Nutrition
Not a food plant. Lupine is toxic - seeds, pods and foliage carry quinolizidine alkaloids that poison people, pets and livestock, and the seeds carry the most. Edible lupini beans come from different, de-bittered crop lupines. Its real contributions are nitrogen fixed into lean soil, bumblebees, and the Karner blue butterfly.
Lupine is not food and no home preparation makes it so. Seeds, pods, and foliage contain quinolizidine alkaloids — bitter compounds that cause vomiting, salivation, weakness, and worse in quantity — and the seeds hold the most. The everyday hazard is the obvious one: a lupine pod is a fuzzy pea pod with peas inside, and children have eaten them for exactly that reason. Keep pods out of reach and label any seed you save.
The same chemistry makes lupines a livestock poisoning plant, well known on western rangeland. Animals mostly avoid them, so poisonings tend to follow hunger and overgrazed ground, and seed-heavy plants are the dangerous stage. The notorious crooked calf disease — calves born with twisted limbs and spines — is a narrower story than it is usually told as: it comes from particular western range species carrying the alkaloid anagyrine, eaten by cows at a specific window early in pregnancy, rather than from lupines as a class. The safe rule is unchanged: do not plant lupines in grazed pasture and do not feed them to animals.
The confusion worth clearing up is lupini beans. Those are lupine seed, but from specially bred low-alkaloid crop lupines, and they are then brined and soaked over days to leach out what remains — a different plant and a process nothing in a home kitchen reproduces on a garden lupine. Where lupine genuinely gives back is in the garden's ecology: it fixes nitrogen into lean soil through its root nodules, it feeds bumblebees, which are among the few insects strong enough to force a pea flower open, and wild lupine alone feeds the caterpillars of the endangered Karner blue butterfly. Grow it for the soil and the insects, and keep it entirely off the plate.
History
An ancient European crop plant and green manure that became, in North America, a wildflower of sandy barrens and then a cottage-garden star - transformed by George Russell's decades of selection in a Yorkshire allotment - while its native eastern species became the hinge on which an endangered butterfly hangs.
Lupines were farmed long before they were admired. Around the Mediterranean and in Egypt they were grown for millennia as a green manure and, after days of soaking to leach out the bitterness, as a protein-rich food — valued precisely because, as legumes, they fix nitrogen and crop on poor ground. That tradition survives in the low-alkaloid sweet lupines bred for food and fodder today.
The garden lupine has a much shorter and stranger history. In 1911 George Russell, a jobbing gardener in York, decided the lupines of his day were dull, and spent roughly a quarter of a century crossing and ruthlessly rogueing seedlings on his allotment, refusing to sell any of them. When the Russell hybrids were finally exhibited in 1937 they caused a sensation: dense, bicoloured, rainbow-coloured spikes that made every earlier lupine look thin. They remain the backbone of the cottage-garden lupine, and they are still short-lived and still fussy about summer heat, which is the trade the colour came with.
North America's own contribution is quieter and more consequential. Wild lupine was a plant of the oak savannas and pine barrens — open, sandy, fire-maintained country that has been largely built over, farmed, or grown up into closed forest through fire suppression. As those barrens went, so did the Karner blue butterfly, whose caterpillars eat nothing else; it was listed as federally endangered in 1992, and its recovery is now essentially a project of restoring wild lupine to sandy ground across the Great Lakes and Northeast. The historical irony is sharp: in parts of New England the lupine most people photograph on roadsides is the naturalised western L. polyphyllus behind the Russell hybrids, which crowds out the native and does the butterfly no good at all.
Troubleshooting
Poor germination means unscarified seed. No flowers in year one is normal. Floppy leafy plants mean rich soil or fertilizer; collapsed crowns mean water. Plants that vanish in midsummer are dormant, not dead - and plants that die after a few years were always going to, which is why you let some seed.
Seed will not come up, or comes up thinly over months: the hard waterproof coat — scarify before sowing and sow promptly afterwards. Untreated seed can sit dormant for years, which reads as failure. No flowers in the first year: normal for seed-grown plants, which build leaves and a taproot first and bloom in year two. The transplant sulked and died: lupines resent root disturbance — direct-sow where they are to grow, or set out young pot-grown plants without teasing the rootball, and never try to move an established one. Floppy, leafy plants with poor spikes: soil too rich, or fertilizer (including lawn feed drifting in) — grow them lean and gritty in full sun and stop feeding. Crown blackened and collapsed, often over winter: water standing around the crown — raise the bed, sharpen the drainage, pull mulch back off the crown, and stop watering. The plant vanished in July: wild lupine is summer-dormant; leave it dry and it returns in spring. The clump died after two or three years: lupines are short-lived, hybrids especially — leave some spikes to ripen so volunteers replace them. Leaves scorch and mildew in a humid summer: a climate mismatch as much as a disease; perennial lupines want cool summers and struggle in the hot, muggy South. Sticky, curled spikes with insects: lupine aphid — hose it off before colonies build. Safety reminder: seeds and pods are the most toxic part and look like peas; keep them from children, pets, and livestock.
Growing across climates
Cool-summer plants. Wild lupine is hardy to zone 3 and grows across the sandy East and Midwest through zone 8; the Russell hybrids want cool, damp summers and are superb in the Pacific Northwest, New England and the mountains but short-lived and unhappy in hot, humid heat. Wet winter soil is the other limit.
Perennial lupines are cold-hardy and heat-intolerant, which is the reverse of the Texas bluebonnet's problem. Wild lupine is hardy to roughly zone 3 and native right down the eastern seaboard into the Gulf states, so cold is never the issue for it — but it is a plant of sandy, acid, sharply drained barrens, and its practical range is defined by soil rather than by temperature. Give it heavy clay, limey ground, or an irrigated border, and it will fail in a climate that suits it perfectly.
The Russell hybrids are pickier. They want cool, moist summers and are magnificent in the Pacific Northwest, coastal and northern New England, the upper Midwest, and mountain gardens — roughly zones 4 to 7 — where they will still only live a few years. In hot, humid summers they mildew, decline, and die out fast, and gardeners in zones 8 and warmer are usually better served treating them as a one-season plant or leaving them alone entirely.
The limit both share is wet ground, especially in winter. A crown sitting in cold saturated soil rots, and that kills far more lupines than frost ever does; raised beds, slopes, and gritty soil are the answers in heavy or high-rainfall ground. Summer watering is the other common mistake, since wild lupine is naturally dormant then. There is one further consideration in the Northeast and Great Lakes that has nothing to do with survival: the big-leaf lupine behind the Russell hybrids has naturalised there and displaces native wild lupine, taking Karner blue habitat with it. Within the native range, plant true L. perennis and keep the hybrids for gardens well away from wild populations.
